First thoughts: That escalated quickly

*** Boy, that escalated quickly: We predicted that the AIG bonuses story would lead politicians to begin channeling their inner populist. We just didn’t realize that -- to borrow a phrase from Ron Burgundy -- it would escalate so quickly, to the point that we're now talking about death and suicide. Indeed, yesterday’s reactions to the bonuses either resembled that journalist-on-journalist fight in “Anchorman” (“Brick killed a guy. Did you throw a trident?”), or one of those mob-violence scenes in “The Simpsons.” As the Washington Post recounts, New York Attorney General (and possible 2010 gubernatorial candidate) Andrew Cuomo said he was issuing subpoenas; more than 80 House Democrats signed a letter demanding that the money used to pay the bonuses be recouped from AIG; House Minority Leader John Boehner warned that there would no GOP support for future bailouts; and even Sen. Chuck Grassley suggested in a radio interview that AIG executives "follow the Japanese model … resign, or go commit suicide." The Post adds that an aide later explained that Grassley “does not actually want executives to kill themselves.” Well, um, thanks for the clarification. So it is no wonder Wall Street firms may feel the need for extra security...

*** The congressional lynch mob: Seriously, are longtime senators really advocating that people commit suicide? It's a lynch mob out there, and members of Congress seem to be carrying torches. This actually makes it that much harder for AIG to want to disclose the names of the bonus recipients (their lives could be in danger, apparently). Will President Obama -- who yesterday said, “I’m choked up with anger here” -- actually have to calm people down? What’s ironic here is that the $165 million in bonuses represent just 1% of the government money AIG has received. (What's nuttier about this financial crisis: that we're getting worked up over something that's less than 1% of an entire bailout, or that somehow $165 million has been reduced to 1% of ANYTHING?) What’s also ironic here: A Congress and a federal government that made it easier for trading derivatives and credit-default swaps are so angry right now. Of course, everyone wants to pile on the government for not stopping the bonuses or anticipating what was going to happen. But at what point is it totally incumbent on the government to anticipate all this? *** Clarification *** Our math failed us this morning; that $165 million represents one-tenth of 1% of the money AIG has received.

*** Gibbs vs. Cheney: Besides the furor over the AIG bonuses, the other big political news yesterday was the administration’s counterpunch to Dick Cheney, who has now twice accused the Obama White House of making the country less safe. "I guess Rush Limbaugh was busy," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said in response to Cheney’s claims. "So they trotted out the next most popular member of the Republican cabal." Is Robert Gibbs' open disdain for Cheney acceptable to a president who promised to move beyond petty political squabbling? And does the president agree with Gibbs’ description of the loyal opposition as "the Republican cabal”?

Video: In a recent interview, Cheney says Obama has made America less safe.

*** A judicial sign: According to a scoop from the New York Times, it looks like the Obama White House will unveil its first judicial nomination this week, and the pick is intended to send a “signal” about the kind of judges the president will appoint. The pick, the Times says, is Judge David Hamilton -- a moderate from Indiana who worked for Sen. Evan Bayh, who happens to be Lee Hamilton’s nephew, and who has the support of GOP Sen. Dick Lugar -- and Obama will nominate him to serve on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. An official told the Times that “part of the reason for making the Hamilton nomination the administration’s first public entry into the often contentious field of judicial selection was to serve ‘as a kind of signal’ about the kind of nominees Mr. Obama will select."

*** Obama political operation picking up steam: We alluded to this yesterday, but the Obama political operation is beginning to pick up steam. Not only is his Organizing for America, which is housed inside the Democratic National Committee, deploying its grassroots army to support Obama’s budget (a campaign that's going to be MORE about winning over conservative Democrats than moderate Republicans), but the president will hit his first fundraiser (next week), he’ll make an appearance on Leno (on Thursday), and Biden delivered remarks thanking DNC donors (last night). Welcome to the permanent campaign.

Video: Obama's appearance on Leno on Thursday will make him the first sitting president to appear on a late-night talk show.

*** Murtha in trouble? Something tells us that this story about Rep. Jack Murtha isn’t going away. The Washington Post: “A Pennsylvania defense research center regularly consulted with two ‘handlers’ close to Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.) as it collected nearly $250 million in federal funding through the lawmaker, according to documents … and sources familiar with the funding requests. The center then channeled a significant portion of the funding to companies that were among Murtha's campaign supporters.” The question for key members of the House Democratic caucus is whether Murtha is going to hang around long enough to take down other members of his party with him, or if he ends up being tossed under the proverbial bus? We're surprised so many Democrats (particularly those freshmen and sophomore reformers) have stayed so quiet.

*** St. Patrick’s Day fun: At 10:50 am ET, President Barack O’Bama and Vice President Joe Biden meet with Ireland’s taoiseach (or prime minister), Brian Cowen. The three men then attend a Shamrock ceremony at the White House, O’Bama makes remarks at a St. Patrick Day’s lunch on Capitol Hill, and the president makes another speech at a St. Patrick’s Day White House reception in the evening. The National Republican Senatorial Committee also has some St. Patrick’s Day fun by releasing a Web video (entitled “Luck O’ The Dodd”) blasting Sen. Chris Dodd.

Phil Gramm are you laughing?
BJ, CA,

You just know Phil is having a chuckle over all this. Phil "Small Potatos" Gramm is getting a huge laugh watching Geithner bury the country in debt.
What's wrong with AIG giving out bonuses???  After all, it was LAST YEAR's contract.  So, using Obama's argument for the omnibus spending spree:  It was last year's bill so that makes the earmarks ok.  Just consider the AIG bonuses another earmark we taxpayers have to pay for.

Obama Logic 101 (Sent Tuesday, March 17, 2009 9:34 AM)

THIS IS DUMB LOGIC. Get off the earmarks that are mostly for good causes and realize that AIG is giving bonuses to the ones who made this huge mess thanks to PAULSON and BUSH

===============================================
I agree that Obamalogic *IS* dumb logic!!!!

And it was Dodd and Pelosi that gave AIG free reign to do what they wanted with the money.  Quit blaming everything on Bush.  You sound like a broken record!

The AIG money is for good causes too. It pays for AIG employees houses, cars, their kids education, along with food and entertainment. The AIG employees also then contribute to the growth of the economy by spending their bonus money. I think these things are much more important then figuring out why pigs stink.
Robert Gibbs needs to be respectful to Cheney?  ARe you kidding?  He's a criminal who should be rotting in jail!!!  How respectful was he to Valerie Plame or to the American people, when he answered "so?" that most Americans were against what he wanted?  Give me a break.  I am so SICK of politicians feeling like they DESERVE respect simply because they are politicians.  My parents taught me that you need to EARN respect!!  And in my opinion, Cheney has not nearly earned it!  And I must say, it's nice to finally hear someone not pussy foot around him (except for the reporter that is).  I mean really, could John King have argued with the guy once at least?  Or questioned him?  We really need some good reporters!
Colbert with the pitch fork last night was quite funny.  Too bad we, the American Taxpayer, can't get away from one scurrilous, greed filled action to another.  As Bush said last year, "...it will be a long time (sic, or he will be long gone) before anyone finds out what went on..."
------
Gibbs is well within his right to continue to point out the hypocrisy of Darth Cheney every time Cheney puts himself in front of a camera to undermine the Obama Administration - while continuing to deny any responsibility for "his" administration's MANY shortcomings.
-------
Grassley's comment, while shocking - was intended as such.  The problem with his 'logic' is that in Japan, people who dishonor actually feel shame, that compels them to 'fall on a sword'.  This bunch would never equate their bad behavior with shame.
So we are discussing only !% of the bailout money when we express outrage at the payment of bonuses.  Fine. But, I would suggest to you that this measly 1% is something the American electorate can comprehend and it easily comes a symbol of a a far greater fear that money is being misspent on a massive scale.

Unfortunately, the Obama administration has not provided a ledger sheet showing the balance of where the money was spent and the return value for the expenditure. It is all about accountability and just because there are more zeros behind the figure does not make the process any less effective.  The supposed complexity of the issue only fuels the growing distrust of bankers, wall street, and congress.

The Secretary of the Treasury needs to drop the philosophy and return to accounting 101. I know of nothing else that will calm the gathering storm.
Ron Indiana - Have you noticed that Rachel Maddow doesn't seem to have difficulty getting guests on her show.

-----------

Then how do you explain Maddow's last place finish in the ratings for shows like hers?

What is pure Hypocrisy? Just watch the GOP spokespersons & listen to the shrills. They got us into this mess, and now they will cry about any decision, no matter how good or decent of a move to get us OUT of this disaster. They have become shameful, and moving onto to irrelevent.
Why no comment on Cheney's disdain for the current administration?  Why no comment on his promulgation of lies?  Why are you still treating the Bush/Cheney gang at the expense of the Obama White House?
As we try and figure out what has happened to the US economy over the last 10 years. . . why not discuss the GOP, and their absolute disdain for REGULATION !!
Now that we have a hugh mess, they're on the populist bandwagon. . they're so concerned about the public and OUR $$$$. . give me a break !!!!  What losers.
We can see what's happening here. . . . Ask Bush and Cheney about the American worker. . .whom they IGNORED OVER, and OVER AGAIN !!!! Cut your bogus concern. . . because Cheney is ONLY INTERESTED in re-writing history. . .that's only for people who are idiots; don't READ or think for themselves; hey,  the Lumbaugh crowd.. . .that's how they are. . .follow, don't lead !!!!  What's with these people ???? AIG. . hey, I feel better with the Obama gang to find the solution. .because Bush/Cheney and the mindless GOP, don't give a damn !!!!!
Second thought:  While watching one of the Republican starategist, it dawned on me that he was SUPPORTING AIG!! How dumb is that!!  The republican "cabal" is all dressed up and no where to go.
Ron Indiana

Fine Ron. Let AIG go under. Let us know how that works out for all of us when we destory several more trillions in wealth.
Funny how you don't seem to think it's out of acceptable range for the former vice president of the United States to go on national TV and accuse the current administration of making us less safe, yet when the administration responds to such an accusation appropriately, you get all huffy. I'm dissapointed. I expected better from you. Being "post partisan" does not mean allowing attacks to go unchallenged.
Chris Dodd and Barney Frank are responsible for this AIG distraction.

Obama is trying to distract us from his inability to do anything about the economy....except make it worse.
The outrage should be directed at former Secretary Hank Paulson, Fed Chairman Ben Benancke & the BUSH Administration who started this "snowball".  The very first "public" money awarded to AIG: American International Group was DIRECTLY from the FED Treasury with NO INPUT from LAW MAKERS.  Now, we find out that the biggest BENEFICIARY to those "public" funds paid out to "counter parties" is none other than GOLDMAN SACHS.

CONFLICT of INTEREST!  Put Hank Paulson & his GOLDMAN SACHS friend "CASH CARRY" on the stand!
Is Cheney's open disdain for a sitting President okay?
Who was the President back in September 2008 when the Government first stepped in to bail out AIG?

----------------------------------------------------
Who ran Congress back in September 2008?  Of course Bush bears some of the blame.  But sorry, Congress voted to give the bailout money to AIG and did it with no strings attached.  Now Bawney Fwank is making the rounds being outraged at Bush.  Hello, Bawney, time to look in the mirror-you were just as complicit.
So Dick Cheney can attack Obama for saying he makes the country less safe, and skirt blame on the economy and that's completely acceptable? Has former Presidents and Vice-Presidents ever been so quick to seek out the media to criticize the new Administration?

Is Obama, and Gibbs not allowed to fight back because that is not bi-partisan? So Obama is supposed to take all partisan attacks and not counter-punch? The media seems to be talking glee in holding Obama up to an unrealistic standard.
Obama is hardly out of the woods on this AIG scandal. Besides the near impossibility of getting the bonus money back, the administration faces the debilitating questions of who knew what/when.

http://www.political-buzz.com/
All these so-called "experienced congressman" got us in this mess. Now,seeing the anger from the public, they rail against the very situation they got us into. Even asking the employees of AIG to commit suicide. WOW!If this is experience, I want none of it. Americans better to wake up to the end product the so-called "greatest generation that ever lived" has created for us. Greed! 20 million illegal immigrants they could exploit for profit, arming foreign dictatorship governments for business contracts, 30+ years of corporate subsidies (corporate welfare),mergers to the point of monopolies that are to big to fail, corporate malfeasance with no accountability, two-tiered justice system (innocense for the rich, guilty for the poor),and I can go on and on with the end product we as the next generation of Americans will face and somehow have to begin to unwind. A start would be term limits on congressman. This might give us the capability to unwind only 4 years of damage instead of 30+ years of corruption. All in favor say "I", All opposed say "Nay"?
