McCain pivots to Afghanistan

Posted: Thursday, March 19, 2009 10:23 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
During the presidential campaign, one of the biggest foreign policy differences between Obama and McCain was their view about the central front in the war on terrorism -- Obama said it was in Afghanistan/Pakistan, while McCain said it was in Iraq.

McCain, in fact, didn't call for sending more troops to Afghanistan until the very day when Obama unveiled his plan to divert U.S. troops from Iraq to Afghanistan.

But now, with troops set to leave Iraq, McCain is focusing on Afghanistan. And he appears to be applying the same rhetoric to Afghanistan that he once saved for Iraq. In a Washington Post op-ed he co-authors with ally Joe Lieberman, the Arizona senator warns the Obama administration to not adopt a "minimalist" approach to Afghanistan.

"Let there be no doubt: The war in Afghanistan can be won. Success -- a stable, secure, self-governing Afghanistan that is not a terrorist sanctuary -- can be achieved. Just as in Iraq, there is no shortcut to success, no clever 'middle way' that allows us to achieve more by doing less. A minimalist approach in Afghanistan is a recipe not for winning smarter but for losing slowly at tremendous cost in American lives, treasure and security."

Pathetic old man he brain cells are diminished .He just has to hear the word  "win" and the brain stops functioning.
The war on terror began, continues, and needs to end quickly in Afganistan. The war on terror was not in Iraq at all. "Insane McCain" is finally putting this very simple logic together. What a joke! Time to move forward America!
Who does he think he is?  This is a little bit like the outgoing football coach telling the new guy that maybe a West Coast offense IS the best strategy after all.
This could have been over with by now. We took our eye off the ball & lost it in the bright lights. Good luck, Mr. Obama.
Q.) How many troops did Obama promise to bring home immediately after he was elected?

A.) All of them

----------------------
Q.) How many troops have come home since he was elected?

A.) None - 0 - actually he has deployed thousands more.

--------------
Obama Bring our troops home now - or your just another lying politician like Bush.
Now he can define success?  That might have helped more back, say, six months ago or so.  Of course, his definition of success is pretty much what the President has said several times now, so maybe Joe and John finally got a clue.
McFossil hears the word "war" and suddenly he wakes up for a few seconds.........sorry, Grandpa, the train already left without you in November.
Can't wait for next month when McCain gives a press conference saying we ought to be looking into this stem cell thing he's been reading about lately.
Holy crap...did I just agree with John McCain?
Brian Crooks, Naperville, IL: '...Who does he think he is?  This is a little bit like the outgoing football coach telling the new guy that maybe a West Coast offense IS the best strategy after all...'

Brian, McCain is more like the aging 'water boy' than a coach

Why does anyone think McCain knows about foreign policy

He would have FLUNKED OUT of Anapolis if his father and grand father hadn't ben Admirals

Talk about the Peter Principle

John, why don't you and Joe Whinerman just shut up and accept the fact that you lost and try and be helpful instead of pretending that you're really the President (don't forget the tax cuts for Cindy).
So Bomber, who's daddy saved his a$$ at least two hands full is now an expert on war planning. And he has his Joe' Benadick' Liberman as his back up,two people that couldn't run a kindergarten sleep over are now experts.Of coarse Bomber is a expert at crashing air planes,he said I believe 4 or was it five? One while on tail patrol, wonder who got him out of that one.So to listen to these two mouth movers about war is like a over weight person listening to a counter worker at Mkdee telling how good the chow is for you!
McCain and Palin...
Offered nothing during the campaign, only criticized!
Both are useless, and need to be left alone.
Yea, additional wars can be won just like they were in Iraq. We have no choice with Afghanistan, but we
did with Iraq. If we had put our resources where they
needed to be, perhaps things would be winding down.
Like, who pays any attention to ANYTHING Mccain says?
Old warmonger McNasty just can't get out of his rut of the same old song and dance.  As always he's a day late and millions of dollars short.  Yeah now the central front on the war against Al Qaeda is Afghanistan.  Too bad old McNasty didn't keep his pal the bushwhacker focused on finishing the job in Afghanistan before going off on that idiotic misadventure in Iraq that has cost us a trillion dollars of wasted expenditures and over 4,000 brave soldiers lives.

In Obama We Trust!
In McNasty We're Busted!
John, why don't you and Joe Whinerman just shut up and accept the fact that you lost and try and be helpful instead of pretending that you're really the President (don't forget the tax cuts for Cindy).
Mermaid man and Barnicle boy strike again

YIKES
I thought we put the cynical john mccain out to pasture...did he check with joe the plumber on this one? or lindsey graham?
Obama is getting hammered on all fronts now. To continue to distract the mindless libs, I guess he'll be showing up on Nickelodeon next where he'll debated Dora the Explorer.
Hopefully we learned in Iraq that fighting a war in that part of the world is different than elsewhere. If we can get tribal chiefs on our side and bribe the right people we can do what we want. That is what we did in Iraq and that is what will need to be done in Afghanistan/Pakistan. Use their culture against them. That is how they defeat each other, after all. Doing this will require fewer forces but the forces that we do employ will be specially trained to deal with tribes and the chieftans and to understand the culture of the region. There will be collateral casualties and casualties of war but they will be diminished as in Iraq once we fight them the way that they fight each other.

I know Zionist Lieberman and war hawk McCain would love to send thousands upon thousands of troops but all we would have is thousands and thousands of corpses. Let's be smart and do it right. Once we got it right in Iraq we started winning and now things are much better there. Let's not make the same mistake in Afghanistan/Pakistan.
McCain has 20/20 vision in hindsight, but his forward-looking spectacles are glossed over with gray and black paint. McCain has moral integrity, but lacks moral interpretation. McCain has never been a social pioneer, but has never missed an opportunity to lead from arrears. He is always for something before he was for something.
Amazing how Mccain is always focused on wars and military spending.  He gets excited about the subject.  I admire his service to the country but it seems like he is obsessed with it.
We need to realize life is not about war. Life is about feeding, clothing and providing for your own family. It's also not about promoting democracy. As we now see democracy may not be so hot.
WE BETTER BE CONCERNED THAT OBAMA WILL 'SELL OUT OUR MILITARY' TO GAIN FAVOR WITH HIS ILK.

JUST THIS WEEK HE ATTEMPTED TO MAKE OUR WOUNDED MILITARY HEROS FROM IRAQ & AFGHANISTAN BE FINACIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN CARE & TREATMENT OF BATTLE WOUNDS.

SOUND INSANE? --- ASK THE COMMANDER OF THE AMERICAN LEGION!
Please just stop printing anything McNuts has to say, from the campaign all the way until now he has waited for Obama to say something then acts like he came up with it.  This old geezer just needs to go away to lets say afghanistan and get kidnapped.  At least we wouldn't have to hear from him anymore.  UNBELIEVABLE!!!!
Blah blah blah, Mr McCain you are behind the eight ball
I appreciate Senator McCain's support for the President in matters of foreign policy. We need more working together and less working to place blame.

From previous post:

"By the way,I am befuddled by the lack of comment from the Obama worshippers regarding the Dodd amendment, Dodd's doublespeak on how the amendment got re-written to allow the bonuses, (he first said it happened in the House conference committee, then amended that to say that his staff added the language at the uring of the Treasury department), and the hundreds of thousands of dollars Dodd and Obama got from AIG as campaign contributions.  The silence is deafening.  Do you just ignore inconvenient facts? " -no joe, no bo, nj
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

As Sean Hannity would say, let not your heart be troubled. lol

First, does responding to your post mean that I have to lay claim to the title "Obama worshipper"? Because I "reject and denounce" that title.

Second, you speak of "facts", but so far, all I've heard is Senator Dodd changing his story a lot. I'm still waiting on the "facts"

But assuming things are just the way that Senator Dodd remembers them to be, that Treasury staff encouraged him to water down the amendment, what exactly then should my knee jerk reaction be? Outrage?

I would like to know WHY the amendment was watered down if it was, what was the thinking behind it? Was it done specifically to let AIG give out these bonuses? Somehow I doubt it . . . but I could be wrong.

I seem to remember members of the Republican Party extolling the evils of "class warfare" and "punishing the rich" when the idea of capping executive pay was discussed. Now all of the sudden, the Republican Party represents "the people".

I think that history will show that it is not "the people" that the many of the members of Congress (Democratic and Republican) have been representing . . .

It is the culture of accountability and transparency advocated by President Obama that will go a long way toward changing the expectations in Washington. It's not always pretty, but I prefer knowing what is going on in Washington to the old ways of doing business.

I say let the chips fall where they may - the American people will be better for it.

P.S. I have been on vacation, not on the run from your probing questions! :)
This war would've been over 7 years ago if Chicken George, Mr. Yellow Streak up his Spine had'nt run from a 6 ft 4 inch Arab.

America did'nt care what Mccain had to say last year, & we Daum sure don't give a Rat's A$$ now !
How can there be a war on terror when Obama outlawed the word terrorist????
Only in his own demented mind is John McCain an expert on foreign policy and war.  Our President and his foreign policy team have been analyzing this issue for months now. We would have been on top of this issue if Bush had stayed focused and stayed out of Iraq.  Another mess for our President to clean up...only this time it will take some time.
To Warren in Chicago: That was never his plan.  Richardson and Kucinich wanted to pull everyone out at once, but President Obama repeatedly said we should be as careful getting out as we were careless going in.  He never advocated pulling all troops out the day he entered office.  Nice try at revisionist history, though.
Nashville fan - I am glad to see you posting again!  It's been crazy out there.  It's all Obama's fault you know.  McShame, Lieberdick, Graham Cracker are all a bunch of idiots. The three muckatears!  John McShame could or should take a few lessons from his daughter.  She seems to be the only one in the repuke party with any brains!!!!!!!!!

You guys really NEED to hire someone to actually MODERATE this Blog. People are entitled to their own opinions but they have no right to their own 'facts'. Far too often on this blog a commentor will misstate something as if it is a fact, when it demonstrably isn't, and then go off on a rant that is predicated on a falsehood. The MODERATOR SHOULD INTERVENE, call attention to the factual error and restrict that person's posting privileges until they post an apology and retraction of their repetition of an error. Thanks. Hire me, I'd be happy to help you do a better job here of encouraging HONEST DEBATE.
Gee, Question Mark, are you stupid or illiterate?  When did he outlaw the word "terrorist"?  He's stopped using the term "enemy combatant" because basically that term allows the government to round up anyone they want and hold them indefinitely without trial.  He's stopped calling it "the war on terror" because it's not a war on terror.  That would be like saying "the war on democracy" or "the war on machine guns" or "the war on DRUGS."  You can't wage war against a tactic or an ideology.  Our "war" is against specific terrorist cells, namely Al Qaeda, because they hit us on 9/11.  We're not going after every person that could be labeled a terrorist, because we would have to start at home with the army invading Alabama and driving tanks through Klan meetings.  Have you ever posted anything even a little bit intelligent or accurate?

You are wrong. What Mr Obama promised was that he would bring the troops home within a 16 months of taking office. He also commented many times that he would work with the military to insure it was a resonsible draw down.

As an Obama supporter, I am a little disappointed that he has hedged on this promise and is extending deployment of some troops for a longer period. But I also recognize that it is important to listen and learn. Unlike our previous President, President Obama seems willing to listen, learn, and compromise. That is vital to success and in building a more cohesive nation.
I see when the GOP leader are the subject the Obama bashers stay at bay...... hummmmm, wonder why????

...no matter how much you shout you are still wrong...bush abused returning veterans right after he sent them to Iraq to be target practice for his ILK of neonut chickenhawks who loved the war but you know didn't serve in the one of their generation...
I salute John McCain for his service to America.

Why do we only hear about him when he criticizes someone or some thing?  Even his fellow Republicans that work on committees with him have pointed this out.

Is it physically painful for you to wake up each morning sooo utterly wrong?

He stopped the usage of the word "enemy combatant".
So we can display to the world that we are an honest, law abiding nation of citizens that do not torture.

Something that has been missing for almost a decade.

Liar!

The President did not "outlaw" the word terrorist.

You may use it as often as you like. However, Secretary Napolitano has decided that using some words like "terrorist" is not always useful and fails to accurately describe every situation related to our national security.

Got a problem with that?
Try as hard as you may, you repubs cannot touch Obama, he out smarts you every time. You can only do one thing at a time, but he thinks three or four moves ahead of you. Sorry !!!
Since when did Mccain and other republicans start caring about saving human lives?

People really need to do a better job of filtering the Rush Limbaugh rhetoric. Obama's proposal was to bill private insurance companies when veterans had coverage. It is not unlike what happens today with co-insurance.

The other critical piece that you missed is that President Obama talked to veterans and veterans groups and got feedback. Based on that feedback, he has dropped the proposal.

So stop with the fear tactics and republican rhetoric, and learn to speak the truth.
McCain can PIVOT??? I'll be damned!!
If McCain is such an expert on foreign policy, why did he NOT understand that Iraq would be a quagmire and push to keep the focus on Afghanistan.  Truth is both McCain and Lieberman were calling for war in Iraq at least two years before 9/11.  McCain and his buddy Joe suddenly realize Obama was right the first time before he was even a candidate for president when he said that Iraq would be a blunder.  If Bush, Cheney, McCain and the others had not decided Iraq was the center for terrorism, Afghanistan would not be as big an issue today.  Another mess left for Pres Obama to fix only this time it is even more complicated because Pakistan is in turmoil.  Bush declared victory in Afghanistan and headed to Iraq without finishing the job.  Now Obama has to figure out the safest way to get out of both countries without causing collapse in the middle east.  Did Bush finish anything he started?  No, but he was good at spending trillions of tax payer dollars with nothing to show for it, good at bringing the economy to a halt and making the middle class poorer.

Off topic.  Last night some political action group called with a 3-question survey about Sarah Palin; did I have a favorable opinion of her, did I support her policy agenda, should she be re-elected as Gov of Alaska.  I assume that because I live in Iowa, they're testing the 2012 presidential waters for her.  I doubt they liked my answers.
To cindy, Las Vegas, Nv :

It's nice to be missed . . . and your post is so funny and true!

You know the funniest part of all - the critics blame the President, the President ACCEPTS the blame, and they are STILL not happy! lol

OBAMA'S PROPOSAL TO STOP PAYING FOR OUR WOUNDED (Sent Thursday, March 19, 2009 11:37 AM)
_______________________________________________
More republican fear and smear tactics. Okay, President Obama put out a proposal that insurance companies be billed for veteran care. He never suggested or implied that the people themselves would be responsible.

Next, let's consider the fact that President Obama recieved feedback from the congressional committee and from veterans and veterans groups, listened to that feedback, then dropped the proposal.

Finally, I didn't see anything in your rant about President Obama requesting the largest VA budget increase in over 30 years. Doesn't sound evil minded to me. But then I don't spend my days listening to the hate spewed forth by hate filled, evil minded people that want Obama to fail, even if it means that our country suffers.

OBAMA - MAKE WOUNDED SOLDIERS PAY FOR THE OWN CARE!

The above statement is totally incorrect and misleading. The Obama administration only considered having those Veterans who are fortunate enough to have private/other health insurance or Medicare pay, for their medical/health care first.  NOT out of the pockets of disabled/wounded Veterans!  I am a disabled Vietnam Vet who  receives annual checkups/other medical care (as needed) at my local VA.  I am required to report all other health care coverage I have (Medicare and private health coverage after retirement) to the VA. They then bill them first for my health/medicare care expenses (to save their limited budget funds) and then the VA picks up any remaining charges (if any).  The expenses of those disabled Veterans with war wounds that have no other health insurance are covered by the VA.
Tell the Russians that winning strategy John!
