Obama faces Notre Dame backlash

From NBC’s Christopher Wilson
As reported here on First Read Friday, President Obama will be speaking at the University of Notre Dame commencement ceremony on May 17th.  While the president will also be speaking at the Naval Academy and Arizona State, those appearances haven’t caused as much uproar as his trip to South Bend, Ind.

In today’s edition of the student newspaper, The Observer, letters to the editor, which are usually reserved for debates over the color of The Shirt or whether it’s proper to chant “Sucks” at sporting events -- was expanded to cover a lively debate over whether Obama should be speaking.

“Obama choice unacceptable,” read one headline, and “Obama a disgrace” shouted another.
The point of contention? The president’s record on issues related to abortion, the majority of which clash with the strict anti-abortion stance of the Catholic Church. An online petition has sprung up urging people to voice their complaints to Father John Jenkins, president of the university.

Jenkins said in an interview with the student paper Monday that while there are clear differences between the president and the Catholic church on some issues (abortion and embryonic stem cell research), it was a great honor to have the president accept the university’s offer and that he had no plans to rescind the offer.

A majority of the student body is enthusiastic about President Obama coming to speak -- he won the campus’ mock election 52.6% to 41.1% over Sen. John McCain -- but an active alumni base that skews more conservative than the increasingly liberal campus has been vocal about the selection of the commencement speaker.

“Notre Dame students generally come from conservative backgrounds,” said Mike Laskey, a recent Notre Dame graduate who wrote on the subject of ideological shifts among the student body in his position as executive director of Scholastic, Notre Dame’s campus magazine. “A good college education anywhere introduces new ways of looking at the world and shakes up students' perspectives. Because students come in conservative but not strongly formed, it makes sense that many experience an ideological shift to the left.”

The president’s decision to speak at Notre Dame also highlights the growing importance of northern Indiana in national politics. In the 2004 election, former President George W. Bush defeated Sen. John Kerry by two points in St. Joseph’s County (where Notre Dame is located).

In 2008, Obama defeated McCain by 17 points, helping the Hoosier State go blue for the first time since 1968. *** Correction *** Democrats last won Indiana in 1964.

When President Obama wanted to hold a town hall on the economy to discuss his stimulus package, he visited Elkhart, an Indiana town 15 miles from the Fightin’ Irish campus.

In March 2005, President George W. Bush began a tour to garner support for his social security privatization plan by stopping in at the Joyce Center, the on-campus arena where Notre Dame graduations are held. President Obama will be continuing the tradition of five other sitting presidents to speak at the Notre Dame commencement ceremony, following Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush. Reagan’s speech in May 1981 was his first public appearance after a March assassination attempt, while President George W. Bush gave his first commencement address as president in 2001.

"We are not ignoring the critical issue of the protection of life,” Jenkins told campus paper. “On the contrary, we invited him, because we care so much about those issues, and we hope … for this to be the basis of an engagement with him."

Despite the protests by some, it's worth pointing out that Obama won Catholics 54%-45% in the 2008 general election. Bush won them, 52%-47%, in 2004 over Kerry, a Catholic.

The headline is a bit sensational considering the predictable, tepid opposition. Yawn......Hardly newsworthy.

Certainly there are more interesting things to write about boys.....

Achilles, Las Vegas
Led by a Pope who condemns the use of condoms to fight STD's an equally tiny minded group now condemns free speech.  And the funny part is that they think that they are "enlightened".
Hmmm...it sounds more like this is a Republican alumni backlash rather than a "Catholic" backlash.

In his community organizer days, Obama worked closely with Catholics, along with other christian groups.

Perhaps it's time for us all to get over ourselves, take our hands off of our hips and the chips off of our shoulders. Seriously, there are important issues in this world right now...too important to spend time arguing over whether our President will speak at a Catholic University.
Oh puleeze!  This is a crock to make it sound like it has something to do with religious indignation, which in itself would be anti-democratic.  There is nothing but pure Republican politics behind this. It is part of their bag of dirty tricks. The Catholic Church is against divorce but Ronald Reagan spoke. The Catholic Church is against the death penalty and G.W.Bush enjoyed running a bloodbath of executions in Texas even making fun of the condemned.
I think this is a healthy demonstration of democracy.  I think President Obama is doing a great job of facing opposition straight on.

BTW, I am 14 of 16 in my bracket and in 4th place in the office pool!  Come on Thursday, hurry up and get here!
unfortunately people tend to create their identity around their beliefs and as such are the subject to BLM disease (be like me) which is actually antithetical to the message of Jesus...it isn't "Love thy neighbor as long as he is like thyself"  it's "Love thy neighbor as thyself"   And therefor the intolerance that is the hallmark of many dying religions rears it's head in the attempt for conformity by rejection.  At least Jenkins is an open enough leader to respect that while there are differences, nothing gets resolved through simple positionality eliminating dialogue...
If he is there to talk about abortion or sex education or related topics they would have reason to not want him to speak however I doubt these topics will come up in his speech and so they ought to let him speak. When are we going to separtate the secular from the religion in our government.

I went to a Catholic college and not once did we ban any speaker from speaking on any topic. We had the freedom on campus to express ourselves. Others may not have agreed but they could have their turn to refute us. That is something called free speech. Perhaps the Constitution has been so beaten up these past several years that people have forgotten.

In the University I attended we had teachers and students from all religions and some with no religion at all. We were there for an education not indoctrnation.

No I did not attend Notre Dame.
“A good college education anywhere introduces new ways of looking at the world and shakes up students' perspectives. Because students come in conservative but not strongly formed, it makes sense that many experience an ideological shift to the left.”

This is what the republicans don't get.  Education and evolution has spurred this "ideological shift to the left."  It is truly a shift to tolerance and inclusion.  Until the Repubs understand that they must be tolerant and inclusive of "new ideology," they will be preaching to their base and not much more.

No matter what the Catholic church preaches (and yes, I'm a recovering Catholic) the percentages cited in this article show that it's important to move beyond 15th, 16th,...19th century ideals.  It's 2009 now, women don't wear long skirts and cover their arms as they did in 1909, and they won't stand for someone else telling what they can and can't do with their bodies.
A majority of people now hate Obama.
unfortunately some people tend to create their identity around their beliefs and as such are the subject to Be Like Me disease.  This is antithetical to the message of Jesus...it isn't "Love thy neighbor as long as he is like thyself"  it's "Love thy neighbor as thyself"   And therefore the intolerance  of many people's beliefs rears it's head in the attempt for conformity by rejection.  Clearly Dr. Jenkins is an open enough leader to respect that while there are differences, nothing gets resolved through simple positionality eliminating dialogue...
Most Catholics are weak when it comes to standing up for the "perceived" values that they are suppose to emulate and profess.  Ted Kennedy & Nancy Pelosi are "Catholics" but if you look at their voting record, you would not know that.  If you are a "true practicing Catholic" you would not support abortion, a weak defence, etc.  There are many references in the Bible of "God's people" standing up against the enemy who are trying to put paganistic idols in front of them.  Look around the world, there are a few (so called) religions who are trying to destroy the Christian faith (of which Catholicism is a part of) and most of the (so called) Christian poiticians are sitting back and allowing it.  God states in the Bible to stand up against those who want to destroy "the good".  Killing an inocent child, born or unborn, is destroying something God has created and man has a need to destroy.  Those politicians (Kennedy & Pelosi, and others) who profess to be Catholic & Obama who claims to be a Christian, should examine their beliefs before stating they are such.  Allowing him a platform to campaign his point of view is a poor choice for an opportunity for a Catholic university to promote itself as a Christian college.
Lot's of Special Olympians go to Notre Dame.
I'm sick of this theocracy that the various religions are trying to impose on us. There's nothing wrong with a belief in God until organized religion turns it into an insulting faith-based weapon of mass destruction. The only difference between the christians and the muslims is the level of violence they afflict in the name of their God, but the christians are quickly catching up after 8 years of Bush's "God wills it" scorched earth policies.
While I can see the reason for diversity and different
opinions.  I think Notre Dame is violating their Catholicity by inviting the President who goes against all Catholic principles.  What type of message are we setting as Catholics, sponsoring an
abortionist to speak, it's a disgrace.  No wonder some
Catholic institutions are called Hypocrites.
Oh for petes sakes - this is getting ridiculous. Alumni doesn't want him to speak. Fine go ask George W. to come back and speak - hopefully they will treat him as Canada did.
This argument is a red-herring. It doesn't matter what the students think- it matters what the University's charter is. Under Catholic precepts, it is pro-life. The school cannot call itself Catholic yet undertake actions that are anti-Catholic. Shame on ND. They should cancel the invitation.
He's, he's, he's black!!!
Couldn't Notre Dame get someone important?
This president is a disgrace and an insult to every American.  I have an Ed.D. Loyola University, Chicago and consider this a terrible choice from N.D.  We, the people, do not want this fraud at any Catholic university in America.  He is a liar, a killer of human life, a weak leader, and has no respect for the handicapped.  He is best used at a rev wright rally that hates America.
Fr. Jenkins is leading Notre Dame astray.  He isn't inviting him "because we care so much about [life] issues."  Obama isn't being invited to a dialogue on life issues - but to a commencement address at which Obama will be given an honorary degree.

The bottom line is this: Notre Dame is supposed to be a Catholic University.  It isn't a secular institution like the Naval Academy and ASU.  As a Catholic University, Notre Dame has a responsibility to remain faithful to what the Church teaches.  It is very simple: in 2004, the United States Catholic Bishops issued a document, Catholics in Political Life, which states, "The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions."

Notre Dame, which is supposed to be a Catholic University, is flouting Church teaching.    Obama is the biggest proponent of abortion in the history of the presidency.
Obama?! What, couldn't they get Geithner?
“A good college education anywhere introduces new ways of looking at the world and shakes up students' perspectives."

I agree with Mike Laskey.  Learning to keep an open mind and to appreciate others' points of view are among the most important lessons of college.  President Obama exemplifies the ability to do this.  Hopefully the students will appreciate the President's wisdom in how to engage with people with whom you disagree, and will appreciate the honor of having him speak at their commencement.

The day we allow ourselves to stop being "shaken up" by different perspectives, is the day we start to die intellectually.
Doesn't it seem as though Notre Dame would be able to find a solid practicing catholic to give the commencement address?  Someone who the students could connect with and emulate?  Many students object to having President Obama address their class, but it falls on deaf ears.  Fr. John Jenkins is not listening.  What is the honor he speaks of in having Obama speak?  Many of the students and alumni do not feel that this is an honor at all.  They feel betrayed, by their oum university president.  They are asking for his support in their beliefs.  He is not listening.
Is Notre Dame REALLY a Catholic university?  How strongly commited to church doctrine is it?  So what if Obama supported legislation to strengthen abortion RIGHTS?  He voted against legislation that woudl make it a crime to knowingly kill an unborn child, but so what?  He offers HOPE and is the soon-to-be savior of our nation.  Notre Dame has sold its soul to have a abortion rights Leftist delive its commencement address because he's cool, hip, and young.  God help us.
The Catholic Church is clear in its rejection of abortion. No pro-abortion person, republican or democrat should speak at the commencement. Notre Dame needs to step up and represent the beliefs of it leadership (Vatican).
Are the "cafeteria catholics" running that school too?
If Rev. Jenkins wanted to form "the basis of an engagement" with President Obama, he should do it in a class, a symposium, a debate... anything but the formal academic celebration of commencement.  By doing so, he is in direct violation of the U.S. Bishop's directive to avoid giving "awards, honors, or platform" to anyone, U.S. President or otherwise, who actively pursuits anti-Christian agendas.  By inviting this anti-life man to speak, receive a doctorate, and act as keynote speaker, the administration has done all three.  And he does it at the expense of the graduates and their families.  What great pain, what great, unnecessary pain, he has brought upon the Notre Dame family and the entire American Church with this serious error.

No matter what Rev. Jenkins says, this is a tacit approval of the President's actions.  He has, in effect, endorsed cafeteria Catholicism.  He cannot "honor" the President while ignoring his anti-life record.  It's like saying, "Well, we're not fans of all the concentration camps, but didn't that fellow in Berlin build some great roads!  Let's give him a civil engineering award!"

It's heartbreaking.
Religious fanatics, please shut up!
This is an absolute disgrace!

A Catholic Institution must be true to its core principles. Abortion is murder. This president has supported abortion.
I decry the day that Notre Dame left Catholicism.  I no longer consideer it a Catholic Univeerty.
Father Jenkins - You can serve God or the World. Not both
The President should be welcome anywhere in his own country. The real disgrace is the secular university Notre Dame has become.
Father Jenkins should ask the Pope what he thinks.  The Pope would say NO.
Obviously the majority of the student body does not adhere to the teachings of the Catholic Church, not an unusual conditon for a liberal university.  Father Jenkins owes the university community a more complete and Aquinias-like explanation for the apparent dichotomy between the prestige of having a commencement speech made by a sitting president and the anti-christian policies held by that president and his administration.
How can our Catholic leaders, like Father John Jenkins, expect us to stand firm in our faith, to defend it and the Church and those who need our protection - the unborn and disabled, when they welcome a staunch supporter of all that we consider evil into their school.  The lay people want our religious leaders to stand strong and put their words into actions.  Furthermore, how can Father Jenkins claim that “it was great honors to have the president accept the university’s offer.”  How is it an honor for a good practicing Catholic to welcome someone  who claims to be good Christians yet support the murder of the unborn, genetic engineering, mocking of the disabled, etc.  Would Joseph Stalin, Mao, or Margaret Sanger be welcomed?   They advocated much of the same social policies that the current administration is advocating.
“On the contrary, we invited him, because we care so much about those issues, and we hope … for this to be the basis of an engagement with him."

Yeh, right, Obama will change his stance on the murder of children....doubt it.
Obama should bow out IF he had any class.
Glad to hear that the student body and recent alums include conservative and devout Catholics, but the Notre Dame administration is extremely liberal.  While it is recognized by non-Catholics as THE Catholic university, it's record on keeping in line with Catholic teaching is a joke. Examples include staging "The Vagina Monologues" on campus, funded by student funds, and now hosting the most liberal president who has shown he will work to keep abortion legal at all costs, including allowing infants that are born as a result of a botched abortion to die with no medical assistance.  No surprise here.
"We are not ignoring the critical issue of the protection of life,” Jenkins told campus paper. “On the contrary, we invited him because we care so much about those issues and we hope … for this to be the basis of an engagement with him."
If it weren't so naive and comical a statement, it would probably be sad. Father Jenkins is inviting President Obama to see if he can change the President's views on abortion? Whoever buys this lame excuse is likely a ND freshman. It's embarrassing that Jenkins would even try to pander this as his purpose- but then again- PT Barnum WAS right.

Obama's Catholic "support" is misleadng because some were under the faulty impression that he was going to find a middle ground on abortion.  This was before he rescended the Mexico policy, nominated two pro abortion HHS, resecended the conscience clause and required tax payers to pay for embryo research.

There have been over 40,000 catholics sign a petition asking Notre Dame to not give Obama an honorary degree.
http://notredamescandal.com/
Obama is the most pro-abortion president in America's history.  It is inappropriate for any Catholic institution to honor an individual whose belief in the sanctity of innocent human life is negligible to non-existant.  We loyal Catholics in good standing with the church  need to cut off the bucks to Notre Dame and to spineless bishops who will not take a stand.
I don't recall the Notre Dame alumni complaining about W.'s visits, even though he dissented from Church teachings on poverty, economics, social justice, and the death penalty.

Seems like some folks just dislike Obama for partisan reasons and are using the faith as a tool for their agenda.  I find THAT very disrespectful.
FATHER JOHN YOU ARE A DISGRACE AS A CATHOLIC PRIEST, A REAL CATHOLIC KNOWS THAT ABORTION IS A MORTAL SIN,SHAME ON YOU. MAY GOD FORGIVE YOU,
Obama may not make the trip on that date, could be canceled.  I would expect world events, Arab radicals (and The Mossad) may have something to say about this scheduled speech
Just a correction, Obama beat McCain in Indiana by 1%
I wish it had been 17%
It is truly sad to see a university named after the Blessed Virgin Mary abandon its Catholic identity. Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Mother of the unborn, pray for us!
Why do you pretend that you are filtering these comments for language and offensive style when in fact you are filtering based on your own ideology.I guess that's why MSNBC is in the ratings tank. If one doesn't agree with the MSNBC slant, one's comment simply does not appear anywhere. Heil Hitler ??
In other words, GET OVER IT!  When Rick Warren was invited to speak at the inauguration, amid protestations from Gay and Lesbian groups, none of these folks said BOO.  Obama wants to open dialogue with groups who may not agree with him, and that means the same thing now as it did during the inauguration.  DEAL WITH IT!

Yeah, Catholics want to teach us about morality. Religious hypocrasy
