Bayh under fire from the left

Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana is the target of a campaign by left-of-center Democratic groups like MoveOn.org, the Campaign for America’s Future, and USAction, which accuse him and other centrist Democrats of what Bob Borosage, co-director of Campaign for America’s Future, calls “standing in the way of the president’s programs.”

As previously mentioned, a new MoveOn radio ad, which will start running in Indiana Thursday, will urge listeners to “Call Senator Bayh at (202) 224-3121 and tell him to vote for the Obama budget. We’ve tried it Wall Street’s way long enough. It’s time Washington listens to the rest of us.”

Video: Will Bayh's new caucus of eight moderate Democrats oppose White House policies?

Bayh was one of seven Democratic senators to sign a letter opposing the idea of using the budget reconciliation process, which requires only a simple majority vote rather than 60 votes, to pass a climate change cap-and-trade bill.

Bayh is running for a third term next year in a state that Obama barely carried last November, though Obama became the first Democratic presidential candidate to win it since 1964. Bayh has never lost in five statewide elections (as secretary of state, governor, and senator).

Borosage said Bayh was wrong to oppose the use of the reconciliation process to enact Obama’s agenda. “Giving (reconciliation) away preemptively reduces your ability to negotiate,” Borosage said in a conference call with reporters Tuesday. “We might end up with a set of policies that have majority support with the public, majority support in the House, majority support in the Senate, and yet fail” because some Democrats oppose using reconciliation as the vehicle to pass them.

Borosage also ripped Bayh as “simply wrong-headed” for calling for the federal government to restrain its spending. America is “on the verge of a depression,” Borosage said. “We need the federal government to be doing more, not less.”

On MSNBC’s Morning Joe last week, Bayh unveiled a centrist group of 15 Democrat senators whom he described as “pragmatists” and “not ideologues” and “not strident partisans.” Three of the 15 are up for election next year -- Bayh himself, Michael Bennet of Colorado, and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas.

Bayh has a history of sparring with the left in his party. As chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council in 2003, he warned of then-rising presidential campaign of Howard Dean. “The Democratic Party is at risk of being taken over by the far left,” he told DLC members in 2003. “We have an important choice to make: Do we want to vent, or do we want to govern?”

At the start of the 2008 campaign Bayh wasn’t an Obama man. Bayh made a preliminary run for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination himself, with a campaign-style trip to Iowa in May 2006 and he showed up to campaign in New Hampshire in December 2006 on the eve of Obama’s spectacular debut speech.

A few days later, Bayh quit the race. He vigorously backed Hillary Clinton over Obama for the nomination, helping her defeat Obama (narrowly) in the Indiana primary.

Asked what recourse they have against Democrats such as Bayh who may oppose part of Obama’s agenda, Borosage said “I don’t think we want to make that assumption yet. We assume that if you’re from Colorado or from Indiana, where the president won handily, and you hear from your constituents, you’ll get with the program ... rather than standing in the way.”

William McNary, the president of USAction, argued that Obama carried Indiana -- and therefore Bayh should advance Obama’s agenda. (But one might compare Obama’s winning margin in Indiana, one percentage point, to Bayh’s winning margin in 2004, 25 percentage points.)

If Evan Bayh or anyone else is under fire from the left, it's only because they are doing something RIGHT.

The left-wingers and Pelosi antics will end evenatually and the stupid laws and policies that Obama made up (off the top of his big-eared head) will be reversed. It's just a matter of waiting it out.

therefore Bayh should realize this time it could be worst for him.
GOOD, I hate Bayh. He is a whinny, fake DEM. His state is suffering and he wants to cut spending. MAKES NO SENSE. Joe S and Bayh are NEIGHBORS people.

On a different note, I lie in NJ and i see TONS of new Highway project and construction getting ready to go or has gotten going. This is THE STIM MONEY. I say BRAVO.

This idea that we should not invest in our country is the DUMBEST thing I have ever heard. I love when people Like Joe S say he is a fical conservative while he admitts to buying a house he could not afford as he is drinking a 6 dollar venti Frappacino on the air
What a LOSER he is
Oh, heaven forbid a Congressman actually do his job!  Pass anything and everything Obama wants.  No questions asked, no "standing in the way" of President Obama's programs.

I don't want the far left running this country.  I want moderate Dems (i.e., those who have compassion but live in reality) calling the shots.  I don't want the government in the middle of everything that I do.  No thanks.

And a one percentage point victory in Indiana is winning "handily"?  Wow.
This is not about Evan Bayh - this is about America's future.

If Senator Bayh has a way to HELP America achieve the goals that we elected President Obama to achieve, then he has my full support.

But if Senator Bayh is just going to give us a whole lot of blah blah talking points about the deficit and saving money, without any consideration for the suffering of Americans who are already VICTIMS of the MASSIVE MISMANAGEMENT OF FUNDS IN THE CONGRESS for the past 8 years, then he is part of the problem, and he will not be allowed to stand in the way of what the people need.
Now if the Clinton's were in charge, Sen Bayh would not be long for seeing sunlight.

Under Obama, well, how does it work in Chicago?

He does have a right to speak.
I'm a loser, and I'm not what I appear to be."

.
These so call centrist group of 15 Democrat senators reminds me of the dixecrtats of the old South.
The left is learning from grass roots conservatives angry with their own middling moderates and will use the tactics perfected by the right in gutting moderates from their Capitol Hill corps.

None of this changes the fact that should the economy fail to revive it will be blamed on Obama and the Democrats--even if it's because their plan was obstructed by Republicans.
This is unbelieveable.  The Democrats finally have a majority in the house and the senate and a Democractic President, and they are going to vote against him!!!!  That's why the Republicans think that Dems always mshoot themselves in the foot.  The American people know better.  If this President can't deliver. healthcare education, tax cuts for the middle class. they will never get it.  There is no excuse, the Presidents own base is stabbing him in the back to keep their seats.  Be very careful ''Conservative Dems." you may end up loosing those seats.
Attack, attack, attack!!!!!!!  Bow down and praise Obama or he will tear you apart!

Kind of like the Obama-Worshipers on these posts.  If you don't agree with them, they spew hate and name-calling!!
Cheers to MY Senator for standing up for the people of Indiana!

We support you Senator and know you have our best interest at heart. No more credit from China, no more running up the debt on our children and grandchildren. They do not want it.

The people of Indiana say, "Thank You!"
Perhaps not surprisingly, when I called Sen. Bayh's number today, his "mailbox is full".

Maybe he ought to get a more receptive mailbox.
What in the world does Bayh think he's doing? Everyone is on board the Obama Express. No debate, don't need to read any of the legislation, no disagreements, no fuss, no muss. Easy work Senator Bayh. And besides it's not your money Obama is spending, so why worry about it?
I have unsubscribed from MoveOn.org because I don't think their ads are helping Obama.

MoveOn is associated with "far-left" in the public mind, so attacking Bayh just makes him look more of a moderate. I am actually pretty darn "far left" myself, and even I don't like MoveOn anymore. (That Petraus ad sunk their boat, in my opinion.)
Before I hear a single comment from the "G No P" about Democrats turning on themselves, ask yourself why Celeste Greig started naming RINOs?

2 weeks ago, the conservative mag "Human Events" named the Top 10 RINOs in the Senate:

1. Sen. Olympia Snowe (Maine)
2. Sen. Susan Collins (Maine)
3. Sen. Arlen Specter (Pennsylvania)
4. Sen. George Voinovich (Ohio)
5. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska)
6. Sen. Mel Martinez (Florida)
7. Sen. John McCain (Arizona)
8. Sen. Richard Lugar (Indiana)
9. Sen. Robert Bennett (Utah)
10. Sen. Thad Cochran (Mississippi)
America's left will not be satisfied until we have a socialist society or what the heck maybe a soviet style communist society. Of course the people on the left such as move on . org and their ilk will be the masters  of that new america because they know so much about everything. I wonder how many of them can even balance their checkbooks or calculate simple interest on loan principal? The ideologues in Russia began the revolution in 1917 but they soon realized that human nature does not conform well to socialism. They resorted to terror tactics and brutality to control the Russian people culminating in the rise of one of the left's favorite guys,Joseph Stalin. Is there anybody that has read any serious history that is under the illusion that the move on types are anything but soviets just waiting to emerge? Does anybody not believe that the move on crowd thinks that they know what is best for everybody? Does anybody doubt that the move on crowd would not use Stalinist tacticts to control our country if they were to get what they want....complete control? These are bad guys and Senator Bayh needs to tell them to go pound sand up their red a-----!
There are some true Patriots in the Democratic party and Bayh is one of them. He gave Obama his "gimme" with the $787 billion dollar pork bill, but now it's time for sober and serious people to start to take a look at what Obama is proposing. All this spending Obama wants is not good for the People, and is not good for America. Bayh is just the first to public about his understanding of that concept. But he won't be the last. Obama wants it all, while Bayh knows that slow and steady incremental movement in legislation. That way you see what works, and what doesn't work, then the next time around, you try to impove it again.

Nice job Senator Bayh.

Gold ?!?!? The dollar is based on Debt, it's a fiat reserve currency. The Federal Reserve Bank, ever heard of it. We went off the gold standard decades ago. Now it is obvious why most of your comments are so off base and inane. You don't understand the basics of the economic system in which you live. It's the economy stupid, study up on the subject a little.

Is it just me or does Richard from Washington State have an uncanny ability to get in the last post on way too many threads for it to be a coincidence? JUST SAY'N.
Evan Bayh is an efwit. He has been bought off by the banks.
For the extreme leftists to attack more stable, balanced, and reasoned Democrats such as Bayh is to create a festering Achilles' heel...and this observation from a Hoosier Republican.
If there was any doubt who controls the Democratic party, I'm sure by now that it's become clear to any one that didn't already know. The wacko left wing nut job groups like moveon and usaction are in total control. What ever the proud Democratic party once was, now it's been hijacked by these extreme liberal groups that have no room for any disagreement by the Democratic party members. Intolerant, hateful, noisy, and vindictive are the words that describe these left wing loon groups.
Well, if he is supporting the obstruction of the republicans, than he deserves all he gets from the
Democrats. Although President Obama did win by a landslide in IN, more and more voters are supporting
his efforts to save our country. And, more and more voters are sick of the republicans and their actions.
Bayh is a good candidate to switch over to the Republican party. He'll be better appreciated by people that are more open-minded then the squirrel-food-nutbags running the Democratic party.
We knew it was just a matter of time. Democrats are now attacking their own. That false so-called unity lasted what, about 8 weeks? Not bad, for the Democrats.
The sane moderate Democrats will have to fight to get their party back from Obama and these power crazed groups.
He was one of BUSHs biggest supporters and look where that bipartisinship got us in the sh#t can. Lets vote them out and show the repuckers the workers party has more members and more votes than the rich mans party. If you are a rich man that came from poor people never forget where you came from.
George Soro's money seems to go a long way. It funded Obama's election, now it's funding these left wing fringe groups.
Senator Bayh: The Democratic Party is at risk of being taken over by the far left,” he told DLC members in 2003. “We have an important choice to make: Do we want to vent, or do we want to govern?”

Bayh called that one. Looks like the Democratic Party has choosen to vent.
Where was the MALE HOOKER who used to ask those tough questions at BUSHs press conference maybe he was at RUSH LIMBAUGHs house watching it cuddled with RUsh you dont think rush went through three wives because he likes women so much more OXYCOTTON please, you take advice from a three time divorce and drug addict conservitism is omn the right track male hookers drugs and lies good job destoying america from within
Evan Bayh is a coward with no principles except to win his next election however possible, even if it means running the country into the ground.

Sort of like George Bush in that respect.
"Wrong-headed" is too kind.  Dumb is more accurate. I would urge the entire Obama nation to call Senator Evan Bayh.  Bayh's popularity comes from his father, Birch Bayh, who was a decent Senator. Evan must have fallen from the cradle and lost 20 IQ points.

Because he has traditionally won by large margins, he has not felt the pressure of making an important decision.  It is time to give Evan a call and tell him to support the president.

PS: When Hillary lost, Evan tagged along with Obama on each and every campaign stop Obama made in Indiana. Two months ago he was in Elkhart In with our President as Obama spoke to unemployed factory workers.  Not only is he dumb, but qualifies as a hypocrite.
If the 15 senators including our new senator from
N. C., we just elected will not support the President they need to become Republicans. Are you listening Senator Kay Hagan. We sent you to Washington to support President Obama.
Bayh and the other rogue Democrats are being disonest about their motivation. Most are nervous about offending the financial conservatives in their states so they have come up with these lofy reasons why they cannot support the President. We will remember them as wimps when the economy is humming along and the President's health care reform is paying dividends.

I hope they don't get too beat up by the way-out left wing of the party but they brought it on themselves.
Perhaps all of these politicians should begin to think about what's best for the American people.  The problems with health care, energy and education are not new and have been pushed aside for far too many years. Had something been done under the Clinton administration we might now have begun to reap the benefits and cost savings.  The longer we wait, the more it will cost in the long run.  We can't continue to be ranked 38th out of 39 industrial countries in health care; we must wean ourselves off fossil fuels and dependence on foreign oil; and we need to provide all children with an education that will allow them to compete in a world market.  It's better to bite the bullet now to plan for a better country than to wait until it's too late.
Bayh may have won by 25 percent.  BUT it was not for the presidency. And it was a State election. I think anyone who sat saying nothing for years, should continue to do so. As for Michael Bennet, enjoy your one year.
WHO PUT REPUBLICANS IN MY DEMOCRATS???!!!
