Highlights from the online town hall

In the first-ever online town hall at the White House, President Obama today discussed the economy, health-care reform, education, clean energy, help for small businesses, and other issues all in an effort to sell his $3.6 trillion budget to the American people.

The event -- much of which cable stations carried live, and which the White House says drew more than 67,000 viewers online -- consisted of the president answering the most popular questions submitted in written and video form and several from a live audience assembled in the East Room. Some 92,933 people submitted 104,082 questions online, and cast 3.6 million votes to select which ones should be answered, according to www.whitehouse.gov.

Obama's responses yielded no news, and the town hall felt at times like a university lecture. But there were two interesting moments. At one point, the president acknowledged a popular question about marijuana that he felt he needed to address.

"I have to say that there was one question that was voted on that ranked fairly high, and that was whether legalizing marijuana would improve the economy and job creation," he said to laughter. "And I don't know what this says about the online audience, but I just want -- I don't want people to think that -- this was a fairly popular question. We want to make sure that it was answered. The answer is, no, I don't think that is a good strategy to grow our economy."

Later, in response to a question about health-care reform, Obama spoke about a bias he had toward nurses and shared a story about his youngest daughter that long-time Obama watchers had never heard before.

"I'm biased toward nurses," he said. "I just like nurses. When Michelle and I went in and Malia was being born, the OB/GYN was a close friend of ours, and so was much more attentive than the usual OB/GYN might be. But the fact is, we only saw her for like 15 minutes. The rest of the time, it was nurses who were doing everything. When Sasha, our little precious pea -- she got meningitis, when she was three months old -- very dangerous. The doctors did a terrific job. But, frankly, it was the nurses that were there with us when she had to get a spinal tap, and all sorts of things that were just bringing me to tears."

Obama said the event -- moderated by Dr. Jared Bernstein, a top economic adviser to Vice President Biden -- was an experiment. During the press briefing later in the day, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Obama planned to do it again, but could not say when.

Does Obama use a teleprompter for online meetings?
When typing in his answers online, does Obama type 'Um' a lot to mimic the way he talks? Or is the word 'Um' programmed on a hot-key to save time?
BHO: I'm biased toward nurses," he said. "I just like nurses.

That's the same thing Billy Clinton said! That, and interns.
This is for you,Contessa Brewer.

You are really on your game this afternoon!  The papers (budget) filed by the Repukes really irked you, and the rest of the viewing audience!

Get'em Contessa!
Did Obama surf the porn sites while someone cut and pasted in the canned answers to the selected questions?
There was a town hall.  Obama spoke (again) today, and the market didn't drop, but is up 170 or so (last I looked).  Could this be the reason FoxFourms ran THREE blogs about some so-called Clinton apology to Mexico???
And THEY make fun of MSNBC?
I couldn't stream this today - so will watch it tonight.  I love the multi-media approach.  I can't wait for the Wii strategy.  Hopefully it will involve boxing some Repubs!  Now that would be FUN!
First Read: "Obama's responses yielded no news"

That's normal.
I wish he would have the marijuana question more seriously, but I understand why he didn't. But let's face facts. I grew up in a very upscale community in the Midwest. Starting in the 6th grade, I knew exactly who to talk to to buy marijuana. It wasn't like it was a giant secret, the stuff was everywhere if you wanted to buy some. I went to the University of Iowa, where it was even easier to find. If marijuana is that easy to come across in the middle of the country at the drop of a hat, clearly making it illegal isn't working. At least during prohibition you had to use a secret handshake or codeword to get into a speakeasy.

My outlook is like this: if we have legal alcohol, which causes cirrhosis, kidney failure, heart disease, and addiction, and we have legal tobacco which causes emphysema, lung cancer, heart disease, throat cancer, tongue cancer, etc., why not have legal marijuana that hasn't been linked to any fatal diseases? We could tax it really high because it would still cost less than getting it illegally. A recent report found that if you legalized marijuana and taxed it even at a 60% rate, an ounce would cost roughly $60. That's about 12% what it costs now. You could tax it double that and people would still abandon their street dealers. It wouldn't solve the economic crisis, but it would definitely be a high revenue stream. Not only that, but we could also cut down on the number of people in our jails, and cut down on drug violence over turf.

If we don't want to legalize, we should go back to criminalizing alcohol and tobacco, then. Those two substances are way more dangerous and way more addictive than marijuana, but you can go into any gas station and buy a carton of cigarettes and a case of beer at 10 AM if you want. Where is the sense in that?

Please don't come on here and call me a stoner and blah blah blah, because I'm not. I don't smoke marijuana; I was in a drug prevention program in high school to keep kids off drugs. But fact is, a lot of my friends do smoke marijuana regularly and they've never been in a fist fight, gotten behind the wheel high, etc. Why the double standard?
FR: >> whether legalizing marijuana would improve the economy and job creation," he said to laughter.<<

Which speaks to Obama's core set of voters. Obama said he and his Press Secretary Robert Gibbs are personally seeing if they can help the economy with their use of the product. This also explains why Gibbs is so daffy during his daily updates with the press.
PS.  MSNBC will never get rid of Scarborough.  He gives them 'balanced' cred.  Which in itself is a crock; but whatever.  I usually employ Pat Boston's technique, mute until someone comes on I want to hear.

PSS.  Go Mizzou Tigers, You've got to ADVANCE baby!  Joe, Topeka - my bracket has us playing in the Final Four, so you guys need to advance tomorrow, too!
Clinton had Bimbos. Obama has Bongs.
Go to Whitehouse.com to comment on the Presidents online meeting. I told him I thought is was the greatest thing ever. What an innovated man!
Did Obama just accuse his followers of being potheads????????
Was one of the questions about why Obama is sending more troops to Afghanistan?
Sounds like Malia was born at the University of Chicago Medical Center where Michelle made sure that only the evil rich and elite got treated.  Good thing they had insurance because Michelle's program there turned away the poor and uninsured.
Wow, we've come a long way from, "I'm the decider". Thank God we traded in the mentally defective war criminal for an intelligent, honest leader.

I just cannot understand why the the GOP would work so hard to ruin America's recovery. But then again, it was the GOP that got us  into this mess.
CdV LA CA says: Where is our compassion??  Where is our empathy??  Where is our humanitarianism??

I don't know CdV, you tell us? You've got Liberals running the California top to bottom, and that's all you got to show for it is people living in tents. You call that compassion? Empathy? Humanitariansim? You people are ill in California. You keep thinking you can keep taking from anyone you please, and don't believe that there is some ultimate price you'll have to pay for it. Hope you like camping.
The Teleprompter says "Moooooooo".
We will se more online town halls tham sit-downs with the MSM for the rest of Obama's presidency

Heads up Obama.  Don't let hilsy unite the HUGE percentage of this great country that owns guns and supports our gun freedoms AGAINST YOU.  Many of us supported you, inspite of serious reservations.  But if you let HER do it, we will unite against YOU, and anything you do or try to do for the rest of your
term(s).  You have shown an ability to learn from others mistakes, espcially the MANY clinton mistakes.  Look what we cost them.

Very impressive Mr. President! I enjoyed the high tech format, and the fact that you spoke to the people. President Obama has proven again to speak clearly, rational in his thoughts, is mentally on task, and emotionally stable. It was nice not to see the media/vultures hanging around the room like unleashed attack dogs on steroids. To judge this President right now is emotionally insane and not rational at all. Remember!! It was the Bush-Cheney Government that got our nation into this horrible mess! Our President will need time to fix this disaster. Time to move forward carefully America!
Think Obama lights up the mary-ju-wana in the Oval Office? It would explain a lot.
I wasn't too pleased that your network cut away from this town hall to cover the Republicans new "Budget Proposal That Wasn't"!

A lot of disrespect for our President there. By your network AND the GOP. Shame on you both!
The question about legalizing pot came from Biden. He claims it's a medical need so he can grow hair.
Figures that Dems and liberals would make marijuana the #1 question asked.  The ex-hippies and x-gens that make up Obama's base are too stoned to work, so they depend on the rest of us to give them handouts.

Of course, having an admitted former drug user like Obama as President certainly helps advance their cause to legalize pot.
Well, for all of those who say we never disagree with anything President Obama says, about the marijuana, I have to say, Mr. President, I respectfully disagree.  In California we could make buckets of money if we tax and regulate this billion dollar industry in our State.
>>And THEY make fun of MSNBC?
>>Buzz

Who doesn't?
Clinton had Bimbos. Obama has Bongs.

And Bush had coke spoons.  Your point?

And Hilary was correct to accept that WE are partially responsible for what is happening in Mexico.  We are demand, they are supply.  Just like when it comes to the guns they use against us.  We are supply, they are demand.
My opinion of President Obama is that he is a very smart man. He has an great instint of what Americans need right now. We need to feel that we count. We don't want to be told to go shopping. We want to be vested in our country. We want to participate. Yes, I know this is really not much more then a feel good session, but when American's feel good, they can move mountains. President Obama, keep up the good work.
What a pleasure it is to have a President in touch with ordinary people, articulate, and working not hiding in the White House, at Camp David or on some ranch or private residence he happens to own while the world passes by.
Love how evil, self-righteous, mad, angry, pitiful, sorry right-wingers are these days!  And their answer to anything that's plaguing (might need to look that one up, folks) is ....................duh.
GOP...............the Party of DUH.
LOVED how Joe shut up this morning and let Mika's daddy talk.  Love our Prez, call him a Commie if ya wanna - that just shows the I.Q.s out there.

forgetting about W's cocaine and alcohol problems?  some claim he was in rehab the whole time Darth Cheney was taking the oceanliner to the brink.  How about some balance in your bile?
Think Obama lights up the mary-ju-wana in the Oval Office? It would explain a lot.

You thinks so?

I heard that Bush paid visits to his friends Jack Daniels, Old Granddad, and his pal Johnny Walker quite often.
Lets get the facts correct.

There are over 6 trillion uninsured people in the world.  How much will it cost to give free healthcare to them?

Lets see - say 20,000 per person per year for health care

Thats 120,000 trillion per year

Divided by 300 million americans

Each American will have to pay 4 million dollars per year in NEW TAXES to give every person free healthcare.

I think I am a few million short? How about you?
Obie the Dopie (Sent Thursday, March 26, 2009 12:56 PM)
-----------------------------------------------------

You can't be a serious poster....There are only 6 billion people on the planet.

America has a GDP of 13.4 trillion

Citizens and Government together roughly spent 4 trillion dollars for healthcare in 2008

45% of it was government...we spent 55%

According to an estimate by Dr. Marcia Angell roughly 50% of health care dollars are spent on health care, the rest go to various middlepersons and intermediaries. A streamlined, non-profit, universal system would increase the efficiency with which money is spent on health care.

So in essence...wouldn't it make sense to implement this program if we are paying for it already?

Go Obama!  Go Michigan State!  Go Olbermann!  Go away GOP!

President Obama smoked pot in high school because he was stressed about growing up Black with a White family and having the kids tease him.  It's actually a pretty deep story.  President Bush snorted cocaine and drove drunk because he was a spoiled rich kid.  There's quite a difference.  Nice try.
"Of course, having an admitted former drug user like Obama as President certainly helps advance their cause to legalize pot."

And your butt buddy Bush doesn't have a history? DUI? coccaine?

________
and Bush had that blank stare.......
It is so refreshing to see and have a President that is actually WOKING !!  For all of you with the negative comments, you still have not gotten yet.  What this President does is to make the people feel and become a part of the process.  The American people elected this man by a large margin.  We had eight years of manipulation, lies and deception.and some of us just don't know any other way of understanding and dealing with Washington.  He's not perfect but I wake up everyday since January 21st feeling that he has our best interest and heart and he is working very hard to keep his campaign promises, so let us let him do his job.  If he messes up we will have penty of time talk about it.
MODERATORS

WHY DO YOU KEEP POSTING THE TELEPROMPTER BITCHING???

Why ????  Why don't you bother to answer that simple question?. Make it a subject for discussion one more time and let everyone know that it will be their last chance to see a posting with any mention of the damned thing and then let's be done with it once and for all. THANKS
Hay Chuck, i have one request for a question for your daily breifing, if I may. When is this administration or our IRS/justice departments going to address the 47000 accounts being sheltered from taxes at UBS in Switzerland and all the other accounts at other banks around the world.
Golly,

The bigots are really coming un-glued. One would think that the Bush Brown Shirts would stay quiet, like the German Nazis after WW2. Luckily, America has seen the GOP for the racist, lying, corrupt, perverse, arrogant, anti-Ameriican hate group that it is.

Ronald Regan eliminated state hospitals when he was guv-ner.  Remember??  He said big guven-ment is the problem??  Well he reduced/eliminated the part of the California guven-ment and budget that is humanitary.  It wasn't the libs fault, my dear.  And it didn't happen yesterday.  It's been this way for a long, long time, from Reagan thru current.
The ex-hippies and x-gens that make up Obama's base are too stoned to work, so they depend on the rest of us to give them handouts.

Moron, the only ones receiving handouts for the last 30 years or so is big  corporations. Can you say AIG,BofA,Goldman Sachs, Exxon,Citi Group. According to you these guys most be really stoners!
the level of intelligence observed in the majority of the comments is as such , i can now understand why the Bush Cheney regime had such low regard for the American public.I dont know how God put such a competent, prolific leader and thinker such as Obama in office, but I hope that same God puts shame and truth in the hearts of you petty ingrates that our oblivous to the condition of the world and this once great nation.
Ted, Mid Michigan
It would be great if you supplied every American with health but right now myself and plenty of other hard working Americans are having another trouble feeding our own families much less all the welfare mooches that we are having to feed also.  I really don't need the added burden of making sure you get your cold looked at by a doc.  People need to get back to taking care of themselves and not depend on everybody else to do it for them.

chris, alabama (Sent Thursday, March 26, 2009 3:46 PM)---------------------------------------------------

What you seem to be too dense to understand is that if everybody received coverage, everybody’s average health costs would lower. YOUR costs would lower. Less emergency room visits, more preventative care, more COMPETITION. The Insurance Agency will not be able to hold you hostage any more.

No one here is speaking of "Free" anything. You pay your health Insurance now, right? Directly out of your check from your employer, right? Only difference would be the money goes to a national health plan. Or, are you one of those who choose not to have insurance, partly the reason that premiums are so damn high now? So, where's the rub. Less Emergency room visits + More preventative care = lower health costs. Also, look at the TREMENDOUS cost that health care burdens business, large and small with.

And, while you're on you morally high horse, know this. I’m fully and gainfully employed, I'm educated, I'm a father, I pay property and all other required taxes, I give to charity when possible, and I pay for all those "moochers" too (don't you know anybody who needs some help right now?);I am a productive piece to our society. Sounds a lot like you, huh? Difference is, I would GLADLY pay a higher tax rate to ensure the medical needs you and your family! Because it's the right thing to do.
I cannot believe that MSNBC switched from President Obama Town Hall Meeting with regular people to cover the dysfunctional Republican Party, unbelievable. I had to switch to 3rd place CNN to get the reminder of the President Town hall meeting. Maybe MSNBC doesn’t think questions from average Americans are important but the rest of Americans do.

Unbelievable, who made that decision; MSNBC, Republican are not going to get you 40 million viewers the only thing they will get you is many people switching to another channel.
Legalize Marijuana already! Don't make it a joke and laugh it off! This is what the people want ! Don't ignore us!
