Congress: Yesterday's budget news

Posted: Friday, March 27, 2009 9:12 AM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: ,

The Senate Budget Committee yesterday passed a budget resolution along party lines, 13-10. The Hill: "Compared to the president's proposal, Conrad's (D-N.D.) includes less non-defense discretionary spending and fewer details over how to overhaul the healthcare system and curb global warming. But it does tackle Obama's top priorities of healthcare, energy, education and deficit reduction."

Regarding that GOP “budget” yesterday… Republicans' "19-page proposal included few details. Instead, it promised Republican themes of curbing spending, creating jobs, cutting taxes and controlling debt."

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs "ridiculed the GOP proposal for being brief and containing a 'picture of a windmill' instead of numbers. He also used a string of one-liners at yesterday's briefing to knock it down: "It took me several minutes to read it" and "I think the 'Party of No' has become the party of no new ideas."

Boehner spokeswoman Antonia Ferrier responded this way: "I’m glad Mr. Gibbs mentioned windmills. The administration must be tilting at windmills thinking their bloated budget puts our nation on a path to fiscal sanity. No amount of pithy language can hide the fact that the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found that their budget costs $2.3 trillion more than the administration thought."

"The Senate approved a major national-service bill Thursday that triples the AmeriCorps program to 250,000 participants and designates Sept. 11 as a 'National Day of Service and Remembrance.'"

HHS nominee Kathleen Sebelius will get her first of two Senate confirmation hearings, beginning Thursday.

The old priest lay dying in the hospital. For years He had faithfully served the people of the nation's capital.
He motioned for his nurse to come near.

"Yes, Father?" said the nurse.

"I would really like to see Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi before I die", whispered the priest.

"I'll see what I can do, Father" replied the nurse.

The nurse sent the request to them and waited for a response.

Soon the word arrived. Harry and Nancy would be delighted to visit the priest. As they went to the hospital, Harry commented to Nancy "I don't know why the old priest wants to see us, but it will certainly help our images."

Nancy couldn't help but agree.

When they arrived at the priest's room, the priest took Nancy ¹s hand in his right hand and Harry¹s hand in his left. There was silence and a look of serenity on the old priest's face.

Finally Nancy spoke. "Father, of all the people you could have chosen, why did you choose us to be with you as you near the end?"

The old priest slowly replied "I have always tried to pattern my life after our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." The old priest continued... "He died between two lying thieves. I would like to do the same."
As usual the repugnant ones don't have a real budget to show uus, just 19 pages of trash.  Their idiotic tax cut bribe will wreck our economy by making vast cuts in government spending when government spending is what's holding our economy together.

I enjoyed hearing from Joe Biden that my $250 stimulus payment for being a disabled veteran is coming in May.  I never got anything for being a disabled veteran from the stinking republic party despite how they lie about supporting us.

Crybaby Boehner is such a lying jerk it makes me wonder why he keeps getting reelected.  He touted that Obama had lied when Obama said the repugnant ones had no budget alternative when in fact Obama told the truth that they have no plan.  I'm sure their joke of a budget will be proof that they have no clue how to get our economy going again, just more tax cuts for themselves that will bankrupt our recovery for their nefarious political purposes.

In Obama We Trust!
In Boehner We Bust!
While I thought Gibbs was a little too sarcastic yesterday, I feel like it was warranted.  To hold this major press conference to announce a budget with no numbers, then give the WORST responses to questions I've ever heard ("we'll see next week," "hmmmm...we'll see," "it'll be better than President Obama's.  It just will.") is laughable to say the least.  Whoever advised them to do this needs to be fired from their post.

And rather than address the fact that they had a picture of a windmill but not a single chart of numbers, the spokesperson made a Don Quixote reference.  Way to dodge the question...
Yesterday's budget news...The President has a budget.  The GOP does not.

Where are the numbers?  Where are the details?  How exactly do you plan on cutting taxes, cutting spending, controlling the debt and fixing the economy?

...or is John Boehner just planning on donning tights and a cape?
You go Boehner! Just keep making your party look like to Noper fools they are! What a bunch of losers~

The GOPer losers are so tone deaf it is amazing. We appreciate your stupid PR ploy as the public sees through your games more and more.
>>>Regarding that GOP “budget” yesterday… Republicans' "19-page proposal included few details. Instead, it promised Republican themes of curbing spending, creating jobs, cutting taxes and controlling debt."

The 19-page coloring book that they call a budget amounts to little more than MORE TAX CUTS FOR RICH PEOPLE.  It does more bashing of Obama's plan, but doesn't come up with anything we haven't heard from them before.  From the way Bohner was rushing to get out of the press room (he couldn't reach the door fast enough), I think he honestly intended to pass this piece of crap off as the genuine article.  It was only after people started questioning it that he came up with this "blueprint" bu--sh--.

>>>"The Senate approved a major national-service bill Thursday that triples the AmeriCorps program to 250,000 participants and designates Sept. 11 as a 'National Day of Service and Remembrance.'"

I know some people are going to be angry at me for saying this (cue rage-infected righties), but I hope this DOESN'T lead to a NATIONAL HOLIDAY.  I don't find the senseless deaths of 2,500 innocents cause for celebration.  It's bad enough that politicians on both sides of the aisle use the opportunity as a photo-op.  I believe it sufficient to remember the victims in our own way without the gratuitous display of so-called "patriotisim".

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs is the worst Press Secretary I can remember. Another "stupido" who talks around the subject, generally never giving a straight answer. Another great choice by Obama. That's about 20 flunkies now working in the Obama administration.
Question:

Does the Daily Kos and Huffington Post get delivered to the White House or does Obie read it online?
Republicans' "19-page proposal included few details. Instead, it promised Republican themes of curbing spending, creating jobs, cutting taxes and controlling debt."

Well people this proposal contains one thing that bush had in his budgets, cutting taxes and this is what has us in this mess!!!! so how are we to trust these same guys that got us in this to do the right thing now, and on the flip side they mention, curbing spending, creating jobs and controlling debt ok where where you goofs for the last 8 years when you did nothen but cut taxes. cutting taxes reduces the revenues going to the federal government. cutting taxes reduces our ability to deal with crisis, what happens if there is another disaster, katrina, earthquake, the government will never be able to deal with things like this if there are reducing money they have to deal with thinks like this. I AM SO SICK OF THE REPUBLICANS CALLING FOR REDUCED TAXES. REDUCING TAXES WILL NOT SOLVE ALL OUR PROBLEMS.
Richard nixion, gerald ford, and dwight eisenhower are rolling in there graves at what has happened to there party. ronald reagen does not count because after he left office it took 10 years to clean up his mess.
>> White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs "ridiculed the GOP proposal <<

The punks are definitely in charge of the Whitehouse. That will change soon enough.
Cantor had more important things to do than work on the budget.

Going to the Britney Spears concert is far more important than a budget proposal.
I'm glad Gibbs called them what they are.No new ideas,no new plans, nothing that could help move us forward just the same old same old.Love to see them in a tizzy over the release of there NO plan, fighting over who gets to be head cheerleader for the day,and we pay these people. For what,Spin,we get enough of that from MSM.Glad to see Obama using the new media yesterday,at least you hear it first from him and not the spinners.
"Congressional Budget Office found that their budget costs $2.3 trillion more than the administration thought."

What a suprise - the same guy who cant do his taxes correct is off 2.3 trillion - Did Tim use Turbo Tax or Quicken to do the national budget.

2.3 trillion - is that the money he forgot that Obama is giving to Acorn - or is that the cost of a thousand new telepromptors in every room of the white house?
Instead of a windmill the Republicans should have put a big colorful picture of a hot air balloon.
They have no ideas, no real solutions, and they are the ones that put America in this position.
Tell them to just shut up and go away!
They are Losers!
GOP (Goodbye Old Party)
"No amount of pithy language can hide the fact that the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found that their budget costs $2.3 trillion more than the administration thought."

Yeah well no one's as full of pith as ol' Boner!!
If OBama is the example you get from going to a top college then I think I prefer to be where most people are ... educated enough to know that there are 50 states and not 57.

The liberal asylum is open, Barack. You might want to visit your teachers there.

Chuck, where were you yesterday when republicans rolled out their budget (cracked fairy tail) proposal. I am so embarrassed - if I had been a repbulican I would be hiding in shame. First they whin and cry about something they never read - then they reprint crap from McCain's washed out campaign and called it their idea of a budget. I keep trying to listen to these idiots and just can't wrap my brain around the idea that these people have been governing us for a long time - and they actual have people that are listening to them - I hope President Obama's education plan goes through - maybe they will be able to get a descent education. In the mean time we need people who are thinking about us - not just their political careers - and as far as I can see they are not doing a very good job at that. If they don't start actually listening to the majority of Americans they are going to be out of a job.
I'm really enjoying reading the conservative posts on this topic.  Not a single one has even addressed the issue.  They've brought up the "57 states" attack, they've brought up Gibbs being a flunky, they've brought up Geithner's tax problem, they've brought up the Huffington Post and the DailyKos, but not a single one of them can even begin to defend this absolute disaster for the GOP.  And they accuse Democrats of trying to distract.

You know the GOP is in trouble when even Joe Scarborough can't defend them.  ::Cue dramatic music::
The media blamed Sarah Palin's demise to the GOP "handlers". Michael Steele's many gaffes are attributed to GOP "handlers". And NOW you're trying to sell the 19-page fake budget as a mistake of "handlers", too? Don't you think it's time for the GOP to look for NEW "handlers"? They don't seem to handling ANYTHING very well these days.
Monkberry Moon:  Now tell me how many of our 50 states President Obama won in the election!  You try your best to mock him, I'm sure - but you just don't do a very good job.  All jokes aside:  It's sad to see that some people can't look at Obama and see someone who actually wants to serve them.  They've been programmed for SO MANY YEARS to the contrary.  It's very childish (and then they childishly mock me for saying they're behaving childishly!).  It may never really end.  Oh well...American moves on.
I am so glad that the republicans want to cut taxes.  It is a GREAT idea.  In fact, why not let those states the republicans represent not pay any taxes at all.  This could be done for say a 6 month period of time and then an evaluation could be done of what happened to the state during that time.  Of course, if they don't pay taxes, then the state also would not receive any federal dollars - say for paying the salary of the republican senators or representatives.  The congressman also would have to purchase their own health insurance because if they don't pay taxes, they also should not receive any benefits.  If after a 6 month period, things are great, them lets eliminate taxes for everyone in the country.  I know that I would love to buy my own ambulance for when I need one, or have to fork over 20,000 for my child to attend kindergarten. Or have provide clothing for the soldiers fighting the wars in the middle East.

Where are the new ideas???

Well, Obama didn't invite him to one of his Wednesday night soirees.  Now, THAT'S more important than the economy!!
Publically, the European leaders are mum on the spending proposals. Privately, I am confident that they think Obama is nuts.

I find it odd, and quite frankly difficult to compute, that the support for Liberty is not coming from the US, yet rather from capitals across Europe.

The Czech leader said that we are on "the road to hell". And please, don't attack the messenger. Have the courage to defend your beliefs.

And this video of Daniel Hannan ripping into the British PM regarding his spending proposals. The very odd thing here is simply supplant the British PM with Obama and you have the same thing here in the States. In this case, Mr. Hannan is more aticulate than our own GOP leaders. Mr. Hannan has obviously read FA Hayek with his brilliant statements like "you have run out of our money". And "you cannot squeeze the productive part of the economy in order to fund the unproductive part of the economy". Mr. Hannan, you get it! We here in the States now appear to believe not in the philosophy of John Locke, yet rather in the philosophy of Robert Fillmer.

And apparently we could not join the EU even if we wanted to.
"The European Union's Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) adopted in 1997 requires a budget deficit to be less than three percent, and requires a national debt beneath 60 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP)."
http://briefingroom.thehill.com/2009/03/26/gregg-us-couldnt-even-join-eu-due-to-debt-levels/

But, you wouldn't know this if you only watch MSNBC and CNN. Ignorance is truly bliss. And I know, the second part of that is "then knowledge is folly".

And this is far beyond Democrat and Republican. I myself am becoming increasingly Libertarian. Far beyond Left and Right. Americans need to move beyond listening to the "pied pipers" of both national parties. Sometimes there are more than 2 solutions to a problem. Both national parties play upon our emotions.

I don't know who thinks this is actually working.  When David Letterman brought it up during his monologue, the entire place busted up laughing.  It makes them look like they're totally out of ideas altogether and rather than come up with an idea for ANYTHING important, they'd rather talk about teleprompters.  Kinda reminds me of how rather than talk about the Dow dropping 1600 points in two days, McCain and Palin spent the entire week crying about lipstick on a pig.  Don't they realize that everyone sees through this?  It's not connecting with anyone who isn't already on their side.  It's almost like they WANT to lose the moderate middle.
Rob, from Iowa,
Did you get a chance to read the NY Times article on Europe -- the fact that BECAUSE they have more protections in place (job security, health care, protected pensions) they don't need the stimulus in the same way?  We should all read several well-regarded newspapers and magazines.
Obama's already backtracking on his middle class tax cuts. He cares little whether his budget numbers work or not. He only has his agenda in mind, no matter what the cost.
Lets see, lets do some math. GOVT DEFICIT = about 9.3T over the next 10 years, or about 1.3T per year. So, the Feds OMC says lets go print some money. But first, lets buy some cr_p paper from the banks .. some of the same ones that created our problem. Hummm… how much money will the FED have to print (from nothing) in order to not dry up credit? Well, they just bought 300B of notes from the banks the other day … and are busy printing paper. So the FED buys its own notes from the Banks, using the newly created money. The banks have the ability to use this “new money” on their balance sheets to loan out (x10) according to the fractional reserve system. And so, Banks are again the winners. And just for kicks the FED agrees to take ALL the risk off the balance sheets. Why not just mark to market the cr-p that exists on the banks balance sheets and let the bank owners watch THEIR net worth drop like a rock? No, lets let the US Treasury buy the sh_t and polish it. Yes, lets polish a Tu_d, but its still a t_urd. So, back to math … it will take about $2.3T of printed money to pay for all of this. And so, INFLATION and Interest Rates will go up. Perfect, now the banks can earn even more. Love and kisses, your Banking system. … Suckers ….
This is not a Republican or Democratic issue. NOBODY can present a realistic budget. Bring it all down to family size. You can not allot money for food, rent, utilities and so on if the family has no money. All we have is a Giant size credit card that is in danger of maxing out. At the present rate of job loss there is absolutely no way to project a bottom line from taxes. We don't seem to have any answers but we should at least try to recognize the problem.
let it be,

I read the piece. Point taken. Although I don't hold the NYT in very high regard. Yet, point taken.
I'm struck by the fact that the GOP budget plan CUTS taxes for the top level of earners even more than Mr. Bush did.  From 35% to 25%.  What the hell's up with that?  I can't believe the Repugs really think this is a "budget," it's a freaking joke!

There's a good answer, but nobody wants to say it.  Before 1980, the top tax bracket was 70%.  We didn't have these wild up and down swings in the economy, and business was still moving.  The average CEO made about 30 times the average worker and that was good enough to live comfortably.  Also, union enrollment was about triple what it is now.

In came Reagan and the neo-cons and they slashed tax income over and over and over.  People don't like to talk about it but Reagan actually had multiple recessions in his first term.  Now, the average CEO makes 300 times what the average worker does, and we have continuous budget problems and wild fluctuations in the economy as a whole.  The "budget" that the GOP presented would cut taxes down to 1925 levels.  Their answer to a growing debt is to grow the debt faster and not get anything for it.  At least President Obama's debt will give us health care and a healthy infrastructure.  But if the people in Washington were being honest, they would explain that the top 1% should be back up to roughly 65-70% taxes.  They won't be broke, they won't be out on the street, and they won't have to fire employees because they don't file business taxes as sole proprietorships (only a moron would do that because you get a lot better tax breaks by incorporating).

Let's bring it back down to family size, as you suggest.  If my family is broke and we need money, not only do I not spend as much, but I also do everything possible to bring in more money.  I may get a second job, or I may ask for a raise.  Since the government can't get a second job, they need to ask for a raise.  The only way for the government to bring in more money is to raise taxes.  You can't raise taxes on people who are out of a job or who are struggling to make ends meet, but you can raise taxes on people who are living off of inheritances or their investments.  I'm not talking about punishing the rich, I'm just talking about doing what's necessary to solve the budget crisis.  We do need to cut spending, a whole lot.  But we also need to reverse the Reagan tax cuts to drastically increase money coming into the treasury.  But this is so politically unpopular it'll never happen.

In the 1940s, Frank Sinatra paid 90% taxes on his income.  Do you know what he said when they asked how it made him feel?  He said, "I had a good year."  But now we have hedge fund managers, who don't deliver anywhere near the amount of artistic or cultural value as Old Blue Eyes and they cry "SOCIALISM!" over a 3% tax hike.
gee they didnt do the budget yet because all those big banks given out stimulus money to politicans for there loyalty to them and not the American people. gEEE WE WILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR THEM TO FINISH THERE HANDOUTS, before we complete our budget proposal.. .You want to make AIG big to me this is even bigger...They got there raises they got there pork, the got increase twofold in office exp, they got 15 billion in earmarks...They have Rep under investigation, dodd Rangel, who by the way seems like nothing is being done...The list goes on, let the American people eat bread and they will eat meat....Fed up becuase The American people seem to concentrate on what they want you to, while they continue there politics as usual......Remember Pelosi trip to Europe, denied you review of stimulus, Reid train not shovel ready over the bridge to no where,
Barney Frank, Fannie and Freddie Schumer thinks we like pork and again it goes on while we do nothing.....WAKE UP DO SOMETHING.......
The republicans are making our politics the laughing stock of the world. Their latest "budget" fiasco further proves they don't have a viable thought in their heads and even parading in front of the cameras to look like idiots.
They continue to self destruct and could not happen to any more deserving politicians.
We don't seem to have any answers but we should at least try to recognize the problem.
