Reaction to Obama's auto speech

From NBC's Athena Jones, Ken Strickland, and Mark Murray
President Obama's
speech on the U.S. automakers received a mixed reaction on Capitol Hill.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid commended Obama for what he called "firm resolve" when it comes to dealing with automakers.

"The Administration's decision to send GM and Chrysler back to the drawing board was driven by three critical and commendable goals: protecting taxpayers' investment, moving America more quickly toward energy independence, and ensuring these two companies and the American auto industry as a whole can survive and as many workers as possible can keep their jobs," he said in a statement. "As we have maintained since the earliest days of this crisis, if these companies do not develop strong plans to remain viable in the long term, they will lose our support."

On the Republican side, Rep. Darrell Issa, a ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, praised Obama's announcement saying he had "struck the right chord in seeking balance between supporting the American auto industry and calling for a much-needed restructuring of GM and Chrysler."

But the response was not all positive. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell released a statement arguing that Republicans had long been pushing for reform in the auto industry.

"Republicans in Congress called for true reform before bailouts last year; automakers were given billions instead," McConnell's statement read in part. "Republicans said that taxpayer money set aside to strengthen the economy by preserving the flow of credit shouldn't be used for bailouts of individual businesses and unions; it was doled out anyway. And Republicans called for an end to funding enterprises that refused to demand reform from management, labor and investors; each refused."

McConnell ended by saying Republicans agreed with the notion that reforms must "be taken seriously or the taxpayer bailouts will end" but that that should have happened "tens of billions of dollars ago."

Tennessee Republican Bob Corker, a member of the Senate Banking Committee who took part in negotiations on legislation to help U.S. automakers in December, said Wagoner firing was a "sideshow" meant to distract people from what he called the lack of progress made since aid first went to automakers last year and cast the administration's moves as a "major power grab" and a threat to free enterprise.

"With sweeping new power the White House will be deciding which plants will survive and which won't, so in essence, this administration has decided they know better than our courts and our free market process how to deal with these companies," Corker said in a statement.

And on the Senate floor, John McCain called the Administration's removal of GM CEO Richard Wagoner "remarkable" and "unprecedented," and suggested it would have a chilling effect of other corporations. "So instead of sending General Motors and Chrysler into the pre-packaged bankruptcy they deserve, now have taken the unprecedented step of firing the CEO of General Motors," he said. "A remarkable move by the federal government. I think unprecedented in the history of this country."

"What does this signal send to other corporations, financial institutions about whether the federal government will decide to fire them as well."

Obama needs to be careful - the auto unions are his largest contributor.

If he upsets the unions they wont give him any more millions.

Pay-to-play the Obama Way

PS- Obie I love you brother - I got that 8ball you asked for.
So Obama deos the right thing and people complain. If he did nothng they would complain. This is getting ridiculous.
Now I am waiting for the "The Markets dont like Obama" AGAIN. can people just get a grip and support our preZ???
And now the MSM is hounding Obama on why he isnt harder on Wall street?? Is this a JOKE???

You can be sure that CEO's and Boards of these failing Banks etc will be getting their walking papers real soon. GM and Chysler are the first examples.

Wake up people and stop COMPLAINING about EVERYTHING
Ya' know, the only reaction I care to any Obama speech is the reaction of the American People.  The party of "NO" had their eight years (six plus veto power) and it is the will of the American people, as of November 4th that this President get his four years.  So Bitch McConnell, Bob "put a cork in it" Corker and McCan't need to just STFU.  Until they have something constructive to add to the conversation.  Spoiled children often miss dessert and that is what is happening here.  Isn't it hysterical to see how when the government 'cuts loose' on Corporate Welfare, the rich are somehow indignant?
PS.  Erin Burnett, all day has been squaking about how GM is essentially in bankruptcy anyone.

Bear in mind, Mitch McConnell is one of the CLOWNS who is pushing for continued funding for the F-22 Budget Buster

This is an aircraft that is not wanted by the military

It's too expensive and it's designed to fight a state of the art Soviet Air Force

There is no Soviet Union and there is no mission for the F-22 except to create unneeded jobs in Republican law maker's districts

Cancel the F-22 Budget Buster !!
We CAN'T AFFORD IT !!
GM and Chrysler were fools for taking the money in the first place ! Now it's to late to tell them to kiss their ass!!
That GM produced a plan that Obama rejected awakens the conspiracy theorist in me. Did they produce a plan they hoped would be rejected so they could then put pressure on the unions to reduce wages and benefits. If that is true then Obama firing the GM CEO was unavoidable. I would like to know what was so bad about the plan that Obama didn't like. Any reporters out there willing to give us some info on that? Actually firing of the GM guy could have some benefits in general, let those guys in the boardrooms worry about losing their jobs. As for McCain's comment about it having a chilling effect, let them chill. Actually fear would be a better,
THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS ----

____________
Lol!!!!

And on the Senate floor, John McCain ...
Well, it is time for remarkable, unprecedented moves, isn't it?
The depth to which the GOP claims not to understand this situation is staggering.  To claim that this is an unprecedented power grab by President Obama and that now any job in the country is in jeopardy is laughable.  It feels like they had a pre-planned response to President Obama giving more money to GM without requesting restructuring and had to cobble together this phony outrage at the last minute.  Should the President have just let Mr. Wagoner keep his post despite gross negligence and a complete failure to prove his company's viability?
The markets seemed to love them some Obama today around noon!

UAW bears no responsibility in this matter, right?
I agree with Rich in Pittsburgh - - exactly WHAT does Obama not like in the GM and Chrysler plans?  If he thinks he can run the auto industry, then tell us what he doesn't like and how he would do it better.

At the end of the day, it is the American car makers that sealed their own fate.  They manufactured a product that was inferior to most "foreign" made cars [foreign in quotes because there are many Japanese auto maker plants in the US making cars that are more american made than the so called american cars].  They maintained a management structure that is typically taught in business school classes as how NOT to manage a major corporation.  They capitulated to Union demands that resulted in unsustainable overhead.  They saw the writing on the wall for decades, but looked the other way in abject denial that they were doing anything wrong.  Obama's speech was dead-on.  AND!!! A majority of polled americans do not favor car company bailouts!  So, what does the senate republican leadership do? B---h and moan...if Obama threw money at the car companies, the repukes would complain he was waisting tax dollars. Of Obama did nothing, they would complain he's letting a major industry go bust. If he reacts in the middle, the claim we told you so, when in fact, they did nothing about the underlying problem for years.  So, I say to them, give me a break!
It's really clear now that no one in the auto industry contributed to Obama's campaign and Obama doesn't have any personal friends at GM and Chrysler.  Otherwise, why are they getting so much scrutiny for a few billion dollars and the finance industry is running rampant with trillions?
Take the money and guess what, the government owns you. That's right, OWNS you!

Ford, missing from the conversations interestingly enough. Oh yeah, that's right, they didn't take the MONEY!

Line up states and TAKE THE MONEY borrowed from Communist China!

It's a little too late to do the right thing now huh?
"... protecting taxpayers' investment, moving America more quickly toward energy independence ..."

The first part of that I still have not grasped. The fact that we have nationalized GM (taken straight from the best days of Breshnev).

The second part of that can be read "boring CO2 friendly toasters". Bob Lutz, the head of GM Global Design, the man who brought us the Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky and the re-birth of the Chevrolet Camaro has announced his retirement. He no doubt sees the industry he loves being watered down.

And GM has become Obamacized in another way. Chevy announce that the Z/28 version of the Camaro is being shelved. In large part because of "perception" issues. They need to be "green" since they are taking money from the government. And that "bad boy" made north of 400HP. I might was well hand in my balls now, cuz I won't be needing them anymore.
One more thing...as for McCain, we are in unprecedent times, and unprecedented action is warranted.
PS- Obie I love you brother - I got that 8ball you asked for.

Actually, so am I.  The markets are down -276 today, and no Bob from Obamanation stock updates.  Come on, Bob.  Surely Obama must be at fault here.  And this is such an easy one too.

Hang in there Ford, your the only one left! Hurry, come up with the peoples car, or they'll try to distroy you!!
The markets seemed to love them some Obama today around noon!

===============================================
The markets have been down all day because they realized GM and Chrysler were in major danger of going down.  Stop pretending like the market is just a chart of how the President is doing day-to-day.  Where were you last week when the markets had their best 3-week run since 1982?

And the UAW has made concession after concession after concession for the past decade.  That's why there are 75-year-olds who have lost their retirement and have to work at Wal-Mart and why there are 30 and 40-year-olds who have lost their retirement and now have 25 years to rebuild their 401(k).  Stop blaming the unions for everything.  Do they make the decision to keep producing Hummers when gas is $4/gallon instead of building the EV1?  Do they make the decision to keep Buick alive just because the Rendezvous (kinda) sells?  Do they make the decision to have both Pontiac and Oldsmobile which pretty much made all the same cars?  GM collapsed because they had really really, REALLY bad ownership, not because they have to pay the line workers a fair wage.
The time for now is today. We gave them cash, which was just as good as money. It aint over until it's over.
Mixed feeling here on the auto thing. I agree that the CEo should resign, but I also would have liked to see some heads roll on Wall Street. What's the difference between the two? Both places ran their companies into the gorund; what's good for the auto makers SHOULD be good for the CEO on Wall Street. Anybody know why this wasn't a mandate for Wall Street too? (Serious answers, snarky, sarcastic remarks not needed)
Clinging tom my guns:

People kill people with knives, their fists and ball bats, and with intention and determination to do so behind it.  Guns kill people because they're designed to do so.  An assault weapon is to kill people...period.  An unstable person just has to point and pull a trigger, with no more thought process or intention than that.  And if it's an automatic weapon he just has to hold the trigger. A little kid can get hold of their parents loaded, unlocked weapon and accidentally shoot hemself or his friend.  Happens all the time.  How come we don't even talk about the guns when these happens.  Give me one good reason why assault weapons should be sold?  Complete insanity.  And next time you read the 2nd Amendment look at the word 'regulated'...it's in there for a reason.

Thanks, Rick, for proving my point.  It's PEOPLE that kill people.

The 2nd amendment affirms our founders' notion that owning guns was a pre-existing RIGHT and all the amendment does is assure that that right not be infringed upon.
The 2nd amendment affirms our founders' notion that owning guns was a pre-existing RIGHT and all the amendment does is assure that that right not be infringed upon.
===============================================
Well then by all means, go get you a musket or a blunderbuss and go wild!  I'm willing to bet that when the founders wrote those words, they never could've imagined an AK-47.  What else do you shoot with an AK-47 other than people?  If you shoot a deer, there's no meat left.  If you shoot a bird, you better aim at a whole flock.  Please, justify why you would need a gun that powerful that shoots that rapidly if you're not going to shoot a person with it.
It's really clear now that no one in the auto industry contributed to Obama's campaign and Obama doesn't have any personal friends at GM and Chrysler.  Otherwise, why are they getting so much scrutiny for a few billion dollars and the finance industry is running rampant with trillions?
Keep the Change (Sent Monday, March 30, 2009 3:53 PM)

the answer is that the financial industry credit meltdown is the cause of the current economic crisis...you have to shore up the foundation of the problem first.
"With sweeping new power the White House will be deciding which plants will survive and which won't, so in essence, this administration has decided they know better than our courts and our free market process how to deal with these companies," Corker said in a statement.
*****************************************************
My answer is YES!  What did the courts and free markets (corporations and greed) give us as a result of 8 years of Republican idealism ... bankrupcy and corporate fat dogs lining their pockets with cash as Republicans looked the other way!

Corker, at least Obama is taking a stand on OUR behalf!

And to "Our Fundamentals are Solid McCain", President Obama did not fire the GM fatcat, he asked for his resignation!  The guy knew the gig was up!  And to all other corporate fatcats ... your gig is up!
GOP stands for Grand Old Party - and comments like these certainly prove it out. Yesterday's solutions are no longer viable because we are not facing yesterday's problems. New problems require new solutions and the Grand Old Party is unwilling to give up the status quo and try something radically new. President Obama isn't "thinking outside the box" - there is a whole new box, a new set of realities. What was, no longer is. I continue to believe in the change.
Ed Crane, Middlebury, IN: '...the UAW bears no responsibility in this matter, right?...'

I don't know...
WHO was in charge in Detroit, anyway ?

The JAPANESE were the leaders in gas mileage
WHO'S Fault was that ?

The JAPANESE always have the highest ratings in Consumer Reports
WHO'S Fault was that ?

Clinging to my guns: '...Thanks, Rick, for proving my point.  It's PEOPLE that kill people...'

Great, Clinging !!
So we DON'T have to Worry about Iran getting nukes
Nukes don't kill people, people do !!

Don't worry about North Korea getting missiles
Millises don't kill people, people do !!

Thanks for your insight !!

Much like the last year of Bush when everyone was sitting by with smiles on their faces.....

NOT
Here are some interesting statistics on the obama economic plan, which you can take with Wal Street's evaluation:

The kauffman foundation recently contracted for a poll which realclearpolitics just reported.  It seems that 63% of Americans prefer policies the incentivize individuaos to start their own small businesses to creat jobs, vs. 23% who support direct government efforts to create jobs.

In addition, 79% say that entrepenuers are more important for job creation than big business, scientists, or gevernment, (government came in dead last).

Less than one fifth of people believe that the stimulus package will help the economy, (down from about 40% last month), and only 3%believe that it has any component that will stimulate innovation, which 78% believe is needed for a healthy economy.

I am surprised that there are that many Americans who understand how the economy works, but gratified toknow that they are out there.  As for Obama's 'popularity'-Bill Clinton was personally despised, but his numbers reflected the job he was doing as president.  In Obama's case, it is just the opposite.  However, I can pretty much assume that, knowing what we know now about him, he couldn't be elected dogcatcher today if the entire electorate was cats.

The democrats in the senate had better be as good as their words, and stop his budget from passing.  Otherwise, in 2010 they will be turned out in droves.  People may like the Big O, but they sure do hate his policies.
Mitch McConnell is delusional. BUSH is the one that bailed out the auto manufacturers the first time. I was almost positive he was a REPUBLICAN. What a Maroon!!!
President Obama, where's the justice?

Your buddy Franklin (Fannie Mae) Reigns stole 12 million tax payer dollars in his bonus and you are not going after him?

Good ole boy network? Equality?
Those looking for heads to roll on Wall Street must have missed the memo. That happened, months ago. But don't let facts get in the way.
