Gillibrand's $2.3 million haul

From NBC's Abby Livingston
This morning, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand had news she wanted the political world -- especially potential Dem and GOP rivals -- to know: She raised $2.3 million in just two months.

"I wanted to personally thank you for your support and let you be the first to know that thanks to an overwhelming show of support from voters all over New York, our campaign shattered our goals," Gillibrand said in an email to supporters (and also political reporters). "The numbers will not be officially released until later this month, but you've helped me raise more than $2.3 million in the two months since I was sworn in to the Senate."

Fundraising is an important metric for Gillibrand, who might have to run three competitive races in the next four years -- the 2010 Dem primary, 2010 general election, and 2012 general election (when the full term of her Senate seat expires).

Also in her email, Gillibrand did her best to wrap herself around Obama and fellow New York Sen. Chuck Schumer. "I pledge to continue working hand-in-hand with President Obama and Senator Schumer to turn our economy around, create good paying jobs in New York and finally reform our broken health care system so every New Yorker has access to quality, affordable health care."

This coming from a woman whose state is buried in red ink and has some of the highest taxes in the country. When are New Yorkers going to learn that bigger government is not the answer, less their state end up like Michigan, or worse, California.
What was that campaign finance reform two guys from Wisconsin and Arizona were talking about a while back? It appears that idea didn't really work out that well.
Smart move...to wrap herself around President Obama and Senator Schumer.  Perhaps she should go over and talk to Evan Bayh about the importance of supporting our President.  Three elections in four years is a heavy load. Winning two of three will send her back to upstate New York.  We'll see.
Nice to see the Democrats are focused in on the important things for the country - them getting re-elected.
Well good !  Maybe  she can raise a few trillion now.
Barak Obama is...

Loud and makes you feel good...

But Its only Hot Air...

Just like a Fart!
You ain't gettin a dime outa this Dem.  Your about as republican as a democrat can be.  Enjoy your time while there cause were kickin you out when the time comes!
I think this race is up to the good voters in NY, the whole state, not just a few parts of it.
Who knew Blue Dogs were so influential in NY politics? And what deep pockets!

Keep in mind that most senators get 6 years before they are up for re-election.

Gillibrand has 2 years.

Also, don't forget that Schumer will also be up for re-election in 2010.

Kudos to "Rip Tootin"...in the midst of serious discussions about politics and witty banter, the best you could do was a fart joke?

I agree - and thank God the Republicans are not focused on getting re-elected like the Democrats are, but only in making sure the Democrats fail in everything they do for the next 2 years.

That's the best the Democrats deserve. And it's pretty much true.

And yet, Californians STUBBORNLY refuse to move to the 'Great American Southland'....

I wonder why ?

Iggy, in the South, if two 5 years olds get married...

are they STILL considered brother and sister ?
Kirsten Gillibrand is just like Huckleberry Hound, a blue dog. She hasn't a clue what it is like to be a true Democrat. Why not wrap yourself in a very popular president if you think it might help you win? She isn't the first nor will she be the last.
Good for Gillibrand.

She's more than likely another one just like all the other ones.
DUMP THIS CHUMP !!

Barack, why are you playing 'footsie' with Wall Street ?

HOW can you JUSTIFY this nomination ??

'...a post he is unfit for, Sanders says, because of his previous advocacy of removing regulations on the precise kinds of trades he'd be charged now with regulating...'

He WANTED TO DE-REGULATE the CFTC !!
Now, he wants to lead it ???

From HuffPost:

'...White House, Sanders In Talks Over Controversial Nomination

The White House and Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent, are in talks to resolve differences surrounding a controversial nomination to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, a Sanders spokesman tells the Huffington Post.

The White House has tapped Gary Gensler to lead the commission, a post he is unfit for, Sanders says, because of his previous advocacy of removing regulations on the precise kinds of trades he'd be charged now with regulating.

Last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) seemed to be pushing the nomination toward a conclusion. A reporter mentioned the hold that Sanders had placed on the nomination and asked if Reid would be moving forward.

"Yes, we will move forward on it," he responded.

A Reid aide noted, however, that Sanders is in discussion with the White House and that no final decision had yet been made on how to proceed...'

How tyo procede ?

KILL THE NOMINATION !!
That's EASY !!

True Democrat - One that spends trillions of dollars of other peoples money for decades at a time.

MSierra, SF

How are the tent cities doing in California MSierra? They have internet access available?
The numbers are from gallup and rasmussen, a few from pew research, and, are readily available by checking on those websites.

Of course, the numbers that don't support Obama are dismissed as irrelavent to his worshippers and must be 'made up'.

Sad, just sad.

Yeah I like your use of the rasmussen polls...the "only 35% of people support obama's budget proposal" one where it's 35% strongly for and if you actually do the research only 27% are strongly against and the rest are undecided.  (I linked mine though)

We don't mind you posting data...just don't cherrypick and twist it.  Post some links to back up your claims.  Unless your audience is the people who just mindlessly spread chain emails you should want to debate this sensibly.
well if your going to depend on support from Chuck the pork man than hopefully you lose....Anybody who constantly looks for coverage and exposure than chuck has one thing on his mind, on how to make myself look important...Hes the guy who said Americans like pork, what a waste he is....Whats he done for the state of NY, not much, maybe nyc where a majority of votes come from, other than that hes a loser....Good luck......

A REPUBLICAN with TAX PROBLEMS ??
OH NO !!!

'...if they mistakenly received tax breaks on a Washington, D.C., property....'

It's just a MISTAKE !!
Norm Coleman was NOT INVOLVED !!

'...Tax breaks for Rep. Roy Blunt, wife under review

Tax breaks for Rep. Roy Blunt, wife under to return

U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt and his wife are reviewing records to see if they mistakenly received tax breaks on a Washington, D.C., property.

Records show the Republican from Springfield, who is running for U.S. Senate, may have erroneously received a homestead exemption for a $1.6 million residence in Georgetown.

District of Columbia law allows a residential property owner — in this case, Blunt’s wife, Abigail — to deduct $67,500 from the assessed value of a home if it serves as the owner’s primary residence.

Tax records reviewed last week showed the homestead exemption had been applied to the home, resulting in an estimated tax break of about $575 this year.

Both Blunts, however, claim Missouri as their home, so the exemption shouldn’t apply.

But a Blunt spokesman said D.C. officials mistakenly allowed the exemption, and produced a letter from a councilman backing up that claim.

“The Blunts asked my office to see that the exemption … was removed,” wrote Councilman Jack Evans. “Both the Blunts and I were assured this has been done. I deeply regret that the assurances to the Blunts were not followed up on correctly.”

The letter is dated Thursday, two days after The Kansas City Star asked Blunt’s campaign about the exemption. It states that the Blunts asked to remove the exemption in early 2004.

Blunt spokesman Rich Chrismer said Abigail Blunt is working with the District of Columbia to resolve the issue, which could include payment of back taxes.

Records show the district also applied what’s called a tax assessment credit to the property, which caps the growth of taxes owed on the home. If the district determines that credit was improperly used, the Blunts’ potential back tax liability could go up.

District law allows the collection of penalties and interest for owners who incorrectly claim homestead status, but since the district is to blame for the problem, the extra payments may not be required.

The homestead exemption has tripped up other members of Congress, Republicans and Democrats. A Star investigation in 2005 showed more than two dozen senators had improperly received the tax break...'

She really doesn't live in Missouri, she's a DC Girl !!
Gillibrand will be defeated in the 2010 primary. She is not a real Democrat. Her voting record proves that. She has no support in the city or suburbs.

Oh yeah, Pete, First Read comments are real serious political discussion. For example, all the partisan hackery and bigoted comments like this from MSierra, "Iggy, in the South, if two 5 years olds get married...are they STILL considered brother and sister?"

Only high-brow, intellectual, "big boy" discourse allowed here.
Meanwhile 95% of FR board watchers believe no joe, no bo pulls his polling data out of his keyster because he never posts any links to his data.

Therefore it is just hearsay, therefore he's an idiot.

She's a flip-flopper and will need every penny she can lay her hands on.
Hey MSierra, SF:

People in glass houses...well, you know the rest.  After Obama's appointments and all their tax issues, I hardly think you want to start talking about this crap (because it is, after all, crap, according to all of President Obama's adoring fans)!!

I'm a Democrat, just keeping it real.
WOW!!! The ignorance level is through the roof around here! I used to post quite a bit here but gave up because there is no use arguing with a right-wing nut job. You can cite facts and examples for days and all you get in response is a 3 line idiotic attempt at sarcasm and a fake name. I couldnt understand the sheer stupidity and cowardice of these people and they seem to have multiplied....scary.
The remarks left about Obama reminding the muslim world that we are intelligent enough to differentiate between a muslim and a terrorist makes me wonder if he is correct in that assumption but I'm not surprised. These are the same people who were calling Obama a terrorist during the campaign. The same mindless sheep who find it easier to be scared than informed, who find it easier to hate something than understand it. I have a lot of respect for the few folks that are still trying to battle these morons with common sense arguments and cold hard facts (Clara,MSierra, etc)but I think I would rather argue with a brick wall. You get the same level of intelligence but a brick wall doesnt fancy itself as being witty.
One of Gillibrand's top fundraisers, a woman named Mikki Lieberman, was one the most hatefully bitter Hillary Clinton supporters last year who compared Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler because his convention speech was held in stadium.

Shame on you, Kirsten, for using these haters as your fundraisers.
