Right-wing radical threats?

Posted: Tuesday, April 14, 2009 4:01 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Pete Williams

An assessment of right-wing radical groups in the United States, done by the Department of Homeland Security, says the current economic and political climate in the U.S. may help extremists recruit more members.

The report, dated April 7 and distributed to police nationwide, was made public by a conservative blogger. Its main conclusions closely track with a much more detailed assessment done in February by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which identified 926 active hate groups, up from 888 the year before.

The Homeland analysis says threats from white supremacist and anti-government groups "have been largely rhetorical and have not indicated plans to carry out violent acts." But it says they seek to expand their recruitment by trying to capitalize on:

-- insecurity brought on by economic troubles and loss of jobs
-- the rise in illegal immigration
-- fears of renewed efforts to limit gun ownership
-- and racist reaction to the election of President Obama.

Law enforcement organizations agree with these broad themes, but say fear of rising immigration is the No. 1 motive driving these hate groups.

The DHS analysis also says these groups may seek to recruit returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, to take advantage of their training. The FBI first called attention to that possibility last summer, but concluded that although around 200 military veterans have joined radical right groups since 9/11, "they have not done so in numbers sufficient to stem declines" in overall membership in these organizations.

The fringe of an outdated party...how sad indeed.
Every Republican looks like a "Right-wing radical" to the Obama administration. Lots of unjustified fears bouncing around the heads of those nitwits. Janet Napolitano can only be described as a left wing hack. So goes your proof with this designation her office has concocted. Nice jab at our returning military too. It really shows the true colors of the Obama administration.

And we're surprised by all of this because...?

These radical hate groups recruit the very people who are the core of the GOP.  Undereducated anti-intellectuals who cling to their guns and their bibles, and are deeply resentful (fearful) of a Black President.  Many of these group leaders were actually HOPING that Obama was elected because they felt it would spur new memberships.  Disturbing, of course, but again, hardly a surprise.  All some people need is an excuse.

HAPPY TEABAGGING!

Apparently, the Revolution will be televised . . .

Here's hoping that tomorrow's Tea Party's are the peaceful protests that they are being billed as . . .

Here's also hoping that those protesting at some point realize that President Obama is trying to LOWER their taxes, and the tax hikes that they fear so much are equivalent to TWO PERCENT on the top FIVE PERCENT, meaning that these people's TAXES are MORE than most of us earn in a year - or two.

It's okay to be mad, but a little sad to be mad about things that aren't even true.

Let's just call it what it really is.  Unfortunately, our country has a long way to go to deal with RACISM!

Homeland Security, FBI, CIA, DOJ, will all have their hands full keeping decent folk all safe from the RADICAL right-wing NUTS. Keep Gitmo open, but just for these 'home grown' terriorists!

This as opposed to the Left Wing Anarchists, who are running our federal government.
It's important to point out that these groups were completely ignored by the Bush Administration from 2001 onward, but that there were regular reports from the DHS on radical left-wing groups like the Animal Liberation Front and the Earth Liberation Front.  The problem is that we so often focus on terrorists all being from the Middle East and all having a similar goal in mind.

Let's not forget that Timothy McVeigh was a Christian Fundamentalist in the same way that Al-Qaeda and the Taliban are Muslim Fundamentalist groups.  The difference is that we can easily track members of foreign-based terror groups through customs and border enforcement, but if a group in Kentucky or Montana or anywhere else decides today's the day they strike, we'll never see it coming.

Also, I find it extremely troubling that the key factors the groups use to recruit (with the exception of the first Black President) are the exact same issues that dominate Glenn Beck's FOX "News" show and much of conservative talk radio.  They're fixated on the insecurity brought on by the economy, they're fixated on immigration (both legal and illegal), and they're completely obsessed with gun rights (even though there's not a single bill on the floor right now to restrict gun ownership).  Are we to believe that Beck et al don't know about these recruiting tools or just that they don't care and have no problem fanning the flames?
first, define right wing radical.

It wouldn't be the same as a left wing radical like Barack Obama, would it?

Hell no!

And didn't he threaten those banks when he was with ACORN so they would give loans to those people who either couldn't ... or wouldn't, make their payment.

There is no left wing radical on this earth worse than Barack Obama. Believe it.
Not revealed by a "conservative blogger", but by Roger Hedgecock, a radio talk show host and former mayor of San Diego. Good one too. Good see some of our media rooting out the little deep dark secrets going on in the Obama administration. Most of the media just follows Obama around like a little puppy.
Obama and the illegals are one.
the party of NO has something else to talk...I mean scream about!  maybe the fat waste of air rush will get so worked up he will blow a cholesteral clogged artery...but who would lead the repubs!
Yeah and the Party of No Clue are out in full force recruiting these wackos, drawing them out for teabagging and encouraging them to have a revolution.
And don't forget the cheerleaders on the sidelines Rush, Hannuty and Beck.

It's pretty disgusting and pathetic that the GOP have to enlist the nutjobs to support their causes.
Thanks Fox news -

You guys show true patriotism - Now we will have to put our military on alert and fight these crazy bastards.

All because of people like Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Bill Oreilly, Newt Ginrich, Rush Limbaugh, Joe Scarborough, Eric Cantor, and other right wing nuts and leaders.

I will defend this country to the last - if it's war you want - then war you will have.

I stand ready for your order President Obama.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Since when did Bill Aires become a Right Wing Radical?

Is Acorn Right wing now?

Is this Obama's attempt to make it illegal to be conservitive?  Or is he just putting another bullet in his anti-republican gun.

Now he is going to call all the republicans that oppose his left wing ideas - "extremists"

See, he is learning some great ideas from Castro.
Bush was at war with N. Korea, Iran, Iraq ...

Obama is at war with the evil republicans.
The republicans, conservitives and christins are Obama's "axis of evil"

And Obie is friends with N.Korea, Iran, Cuba ...

Well - we asked for change - we sure are getting it.

Obama - I love you - please dont fire me!
What is really amazing are the goofs from the Left saying "The last 8 years caused the economic problems of today". What a joke that mantra has become. Capitalism created the boom economic times from 1940 through the 1960's, and again after that from the early 1980's through most of the Bush years. Without capitalism, you Left wing ranters wouldn't have things like the internet or your ipods. But the ranting from the Left against capitalism just never ends. Life must be so easy to pick and choose certain events over a hundred years and say "That's why we should get rid of capitalism - that's why we should spend the country into unimaginable debt". Leftist cheery pickers like that are so transparent.
Oh give me a break. Liberal nutjobs politicizing the government. Here come the Nazis, America.
Actually it is easy to see what the right wing radicals are up to. Harken back to the late 1920s and early 1930s in places like Berlin, Ulm, Dresden and Munich. There were these guys in brown shirts following a little man with a funny little mustache. They were a harmless group at first. They played on the insecurity of the average person who was struggling with the world wide depression and repairations for World War one. They had found someone to blame for all their problems, the Jews. They played on all manner of fears people were having at the time. Not wanting to contaminate the people the brown shirted ones decided that it was not a good idea for people to travel to other countries but to remain and work like slaves to help the economy and the nation recover from the war. People were paid is scrip as money was virtually worthless. A loaf of bread required a million mark note. Unfortunately most people didn't make that much money in a month let alone an hour or so. The brown shirts, their leaders and others they liked were well fed, had nice clothes and lived in grand houses. Unfortunately the little fellow with the funny mustache got them into a war and had no way of paying for it. He believed with booty from captured soverign nations and slave labor in work camps as well as very, very low wages elsewhere the war could be paid for as could recovery. Taxes were kept low and rhetoric was kept high. A year after attaking Poland they felt invincable but it wasn't to last. Before long Yanks were in the fight and in just a few years the once beautiful country was in ruins again. The brown and black shirted guys were either dead or in prison and the lives of ordinary people were turned upside down forever. Although not the same, of course, the similarities to those brown shirts and America's Republican party of the 21st Century is uncanny.

To them military action was the only method of solving problems including diplomatic ones. Negotiation was used but rarely. The believed that legislatures took too long and world leaders were too stupid or too slow to react as he did. He was a vegitarian. WEll that funny little man ended up killing himself and his wife in a Berlin bunker early in 1945. The world rejoyce.

Similar people as the brown shirs are here in the US. Observe and listen. Libertarians, skin heads, John Birch Society members, KKKers, Uber Conservatives, Neocons and, unfortunately some in Congress tend to lean in the direction of the man with the funny little mustache (Not Oliver Hardy or Charlie Chaplin either). Some radio hate mongers, bloggers and sadly, even some on Capitol Hill have chosen that rout. Our job is to let saner heads prevail and keep them from further ruining our country.

Gotta wonder who many cops around the country read that joke of a report and said "Oh hell, that's me"

http://michellemalkin.com/2009/04/14/confirme-the-obama-dhs-hit-job-on-conservatives-is-real/

The right wingnuts are sounding more and more looney, and even scarier than that, commentators that some consider mainstream republicans are sounding like them as well.  This is because President Obama is doing an outstanding job, most of America likes what he is doing, and the right sees their era passing, and their power and influence crumbling away.
Aww check it out.  Angry McCain and Palin voters having fun.  :-)
It is best to take these nutcases seriously.  can you spell "oklahoma city"?
Right-Wing Radical Threats? Isn't that just another way to say terrorism? So who's palling around with terrorists now?
Southern Poverty Law Center? Who are they? Just looked it up - Julian Bond is one of the leaders - head of te NAACP - another one of these so called "Community Activists", Left Wing community activists. Joe Levin is another leader - he worked with Jimmy Carters Justice department.

MSNBC - you really need to be more open about who your sources are. You really need a little more diversity before you start defining who 'hate groups' are. Seems to be a political flavor to the SPLC that you left out.
The fringe of an outdated party...how sad indeed.

Bu-bye (Sent Tuesday, April 14, 2009 4:09 PM)

You're talking of the Obama administration, correct?
Shameful.  Although I can't say I'm surprised - I saw video from some of the McCain/Palin rallies toward the end of the election campaign, and they were one step away from a klan rally.  Not surprised one bit.
Poor lanny from Ny...he is like the other republicans and shoots from the lip when prompted....I doubt very much that this study was begun or finished under Obamas watch...but thanks for pointing out that the republican party is number 1 on the fringe list
Right, I saw this on Drudge. Here is the link: http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=94803

I am increasingly becoming a libertarian and do agree that growth in the size of the Federal government DOES decrease our Liberty. I stop short of insurrection however, and seek to peacably offer ideas to shift public opinion.

Now, back after 9/11 I supported, did not agree with, yet fully supported the rights of those to protest and disagree with the Bush Administration, for this exact reason. Who was not to say what if an Administration could come along and clamp down if they disagreed with me?

Now, I would die for the right of anyone to protest Bush, or any policy that they disgree with, even if their position is 180 degrees from mine. That makes for a healthy country.

So yes, I do agree that we need more control back to state and local levels. But I do it peacably to attempt to get people to think.
Sorry, this is just wrong.  To state there's no evidence of any planned action but to let the fear linger out there anyway is shameless.   And way to diss veterans.   Thought we had turned the page on the politics of old - this is cheap.
Watching the Left wing ranters show up in force, goobling down the results of another left wing hate group study, the SPLC this time. They left wingnuts won't even bother vetting out the source before they fire their hate at anything that proves their misguided and biased beliefs. Wallow in your hate left wingers.

Yikes! (Sent Tuesday, April 14, 2009 4:41 PM)

Yes!! Blame it on Bush!!
What color is the sky in your world, Lanny? Just because you don't personally like Napolitano doesn't 'prove' anything. But I do have proof of a few things. One, when the economy tanks, people look for someone to blame. Since white southerns can't possibly bring themselves to blame the GOP, they have to look for some other scapegoat, in this case, immigrants and minorities. Two, when people are out of job, they look for like-minded people to spend their copious spare time with. Three, when people don't think they are being heard by the government, they turn against it. Four, when people are desperate, they turn to crime.

So, in the current climate, we have desperate people hanging out with other desperate people who all blame immigrants and minorities for the problems, and are desperate enough to do something (stupid) about it.

It all makes sense, if you take off your blinders.

Anyone joining a hate group deserves the jab, no matter how they've served...Veterans commit crimes too  you d-bag.

Unjustified??  Are you part of the group of people that believe the holocaust didn't happen??  That people still don't get strung up for being gay, or lesbian, or african american, or an immigrant.

It's called doing your homework and being proactive rather than waiting for one of these rush fueled groups to lash out and kill an innocent civilian.

P.S.  read the whole article especially the line "The report, dated April 7 and distributed to police nationwide, was made public by a conservative blogger."  which is one of your guys...not the obama administration

Got some youtube moments you can point toward Billy? Thought not. Now you can go back to your regularly scheduled hate, all ready in progress.
Who would know better about hate groups than the NAACP?  Yes, people on the left are concerned about hate groups.  That is natural.  Let's keep in mind, no matter what Morning Joes says, my entire family except for my dad left the democratic party in 1964 when the civil rights amendment passed.  As my uncle said "I'm not eating next to a G*D D****ed N****R at the Woolworths".
Watch for them at the Tea Baggings

Seriously

They'll be recruiting at the Tea Baggings and trying to dominate the discussions

Spurred on by Hate Radio and Hate Cable (FNC or Faux Noise')

What is Glenn Beck doing ?
Predicting dire consequences for the White Race

Does anyone remember the 'Angry White Males' of the 1994 election cycle ??

In California we had a discredited governor who morphed into 'White Power Wilson' to try and get re-elected
He ran against illegal immigrants and affirmative action
HE WON !!

the 'Angry White Males' swept Newt Gingrich and the 'Contract with America' into power

Republicans are not above using racial resentments to get elected

WHAT were the 'angry White males' angry about, anyway ??

Remember Jesse Helms' campaign ad ?
'...You needed that job, You were qualified, but they gave it to a minority instead.....'
With two White hands crumpling a rejection notice

Very subtle......

A lot of that went away after Timothy McVeigh bombed the Oklahoma City Federal Building
Suddenly, militias and the Turner Diaries lost some of their lustre

Plus ca change.....
There are too many loons on both the far left and far right to argue over who is worse.  Both are wrong but can be dangerous.  Both have killed too many people over the years. Whether you are talking about the Nazis, Maoists, Communists (Stalin), Weathermen, Skinheads it doesn't matter - they are all crazy. Neither the left or right has any room to throw rocks at the other side.

Oh so, now everyone who doesn't follow left politics hook line and sinker is a jackbooted brownshirt?

So NeoCons, Republicans and Libertarians are now the same thing?

I wonder how many blind liberals out there who are against the Patriot Act , would glad have it's provisions used against political parties they don't ascribe to?
you guys all thought Bush was taking the constitution down, Obama went right for the first amendment!

It will be interesting to see gun sales increase in the next few weeks.
"Left Wing community activists. Joe Levin is another leader - he worked with Jimmy Carters Justice department."
------------------------------------------------------
So anyone that works/has worked in a Democratic DOJ is a left-wing radical?

My goodness, did you hurt yourself with that stretch?
The rantings of the right-wingers on this blog are VERY disturbing.  When radical left-wing groups get dangerous, storm animal labs, and burn testing facilities, I am worried about it and I think it's horrible.  But when right-wingers bomb the federal building in OKC, ambush cops in PA, and viciously murder minorities, Catholics, gays, and anyone else they don't like, you guys say it's typical left-wing fearmongering and an attempt to make conservatism illegal.

GET REAL.  If you think it's totally fine for radicals of either political spectrum to mob up, get guns and bombs and storm the capitol or any other city in this country, then that's the HEIGHT of being unpatriotic.  I'm not threatened by peaceful protest or by people talking about their disapproval of the White House's policies.  In fact, I think it's an extremely essential pillar of any democracy.  But for the right-wingers on this blog to say that this report is highlighting an attempt by the White House to come after mainstream conservatives, and to compare ACORN (a COMPLETELY peaceful scapegoat) to neo-nazis, the KKK, and violent militias is WAY beyond the pale and you should all be ashamed of yourselves.
To CP Michigan:

You really don't understand "lefties!"

We are not against capitalism. We are against allowing corporations to drive the agenda, set the laws, enforce the laws, and reap the benefits while the rest of the country suffers.

Capitalism is great. But it needs the appropriate controls in place to keep if from running away.

And as far as capitalism creating the boom years from 1940 through the 1960s - You are absolutely correct. That was capitalism under the control of sensible rules and regulations that were set in the 1930s after free market rule got out of control and killed the world economy. That was capitalism after massive government spending got the economy back on track after a decade of extremely low taxes and a free market economy greated the great depression.

In the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s those sensible rules were largely overturned and regulation was removed. It wasn't just 8 years. It really began in 1980 when Ronald Reagan became President, started deregulating industry, and started running up a huge defecit.
How are these groups different from Rush and the Main stream republican party.  And the right wing churches
What Anarchists want is bigger government!

...another message brought to you by the M&M&M&Ms (pronounced eminemineminem's) Rush&Kevin, those Mad Mavens of Mixed Messages.
Cicero ~ As a libertarian you should recognize that it isn't the growth of federal government that threatens your liberty -- it's the growth of government intrusion.  Those aren't necessarily co-extensive.

You can have affordable health care without the government spying on you in your bedroom.

You can have government regulation of air and water quality, government monitoring of food safety, and government funded education without anyone listening to your private telephone conversations.

And that's all that democrats want.

But what we got with Bush was lack of regulation over many things that history has now proven require regulation AND increased intrusion on our rights.  You sound quite intelligent.  I can't believe that's what you REALLY prefer.
watch out for those who want to BLOW UP government buildings and brag about it for 30 years - OH WAIT - THOSE ARE OBAMA'S FRIENDS - this memo is nothing less that a direct assault on free speech and an indirect attempt at voter suppression - the memo even admits that overall memberships in the groups cited were DECLINING - BTW - many are ANGRY at president OBAMA right and left because he has NOT kept most of his campaign promises and this has nothing to do with race - those who use the RACE CARD freely (like in this memo) - THEY are the racists - not those who work for a living and hate seeing our tax dollars go to waste - MOST "RIGHT-WINGERS" WILL NOT BE HAPPY UNTIL THE PERPETRATORS OF OUR ECONOMIC PROBLEMS (THE VERY PROBLEMS mentioned in the memo) are OUT OF OFFICE - THE ACTUAL PERPETRATORS ARE CHRIS DODD, BARNEY FRANK, CHARLES SCHUMAN, AND SEVERAL OTHER DEMOCRATIC SENATORS AND CABINET APPOINTEES WHO MADE THEMSELVES AND THEIR BUDDIES RICH AT THE NATION'S EXPENSE - THEY ARE CRIMINALS AND THEY ARE HURTING OUR COUNTY AND WE NOT ONLY HAVE A RIGHT TO SAY SO - WE HAVE A DUTY TO SAY DO  - thank God we are blessed the bill of rights  - rights which are  for ALL Americans - not just demoCRITES
This report is either unbelievably shoddy intelligence work or is completely politically motivated.  Neither is appropriate for issue by the U.S. Government.  If you read it carefully, the essential theme is that anyone who disagrees with Obama and his socialist policies is suspicious, and possibly violent.  Who would have thought that the U.S. would come to this?
Wow, good Conservatives just came pouring in here to claim the only real terrorists are on the left.  Of course, people on the right who seek to overturn the government are "Patriots".  Look folks, people who attack innocents to further their agendas are terrorists whether we're talking about Timothy McVeigh or the Earth Liberation Front.  Have we REALLY become so polarized we can't recognize that?
There is no left wing radical on this earth worse than Barack Obama. Believe it.

OMG, you are scary as hell!!!
Why single out the right-wing extremists, wasn't it the left-wing extremists who bombed police stations, police cars, and robbed banks (think SLA) all in the name of saving the world from ourselves. How is flirting with Communism, Socialism, and Fascism any less repugnant today and is certainly radical, some have called it "change you can believe in". MSNBC is a rank mouthpiece for the current administration, led by one of the biggest crooks on wall st., suffering from lagging ratings, what a joke. Don't let this distract you folks from the real issues, like a total takedown of the American economy that's underway. Sorry I don't drink "kool-aid"!
"Who would know better about hate groups than the NAACP?"

The NAACP is a left wing hate group. Clear now?
