NY-20: A winner emerging?

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Is Democrat Scott Murphy moving closer to winning the still very close 20th congressional district race in Upstate New York?

This morning, the state elections board, updated its numbers and now shows Murphy widening his lead to 167 votes (79,404 to 79,237) over Republican Jim Tedisco (as of 10:00 am ET).

Tedisco's biggest potential arrow was Saratoga County, which he won by almost 5,000 votes. But Saratoga is completely done counting absentees as well as those overseas and military ballots. All that's left are challenged ballots. As has been reported, Tedisco has challenged far more ballots than Murphy. Translation: Plainly, there are likely more Murphy ballots out there than Tedisco ones.

What's left? Dutchess, Columbia, Warren, Essex and Renselaer counties all have ballots left to count, according to John Conklin, director of public information for the state board of elections.

Dutchess, Columbia and Warren -- all won by Murphy on Election Day -- have both absentees and military and overseas ballots still to be counted. Essex and Renselaer have just those military and overseas ballots to count, Conklin said. Murphy won the smaller Essex; Tedisco did win Renselaer (by 474 votes out of almost 16,000, or 51.5% to 48.5%). So there could be some votes there for him.

The increase in Murphy's numbers today reflect changes from Columbia, Warren and Dutchess, Conklin said. Yesterday Dutchess County Supreme Court Justice James V. Brands, ordered that 100 challenged ballots district-wide be included in vote total.

He deferred to the two bipartisan county elections board commissioners, who agreed that the ballots were valid. Unlike some other states, in New York, elections are handled through a state elections board, not the Secretary of State's office. In each county, two officials are appointed to head the local board. There is one Democrat and one Republican -- in every, single county in the state. That gives their decisions a lot of teeth -- so to speak. It makes it diffiicult for candidates, in particular, to challenge them when they agree.

So how much longer might this take? "It's over when it's over," Conklin said. But judging by the rate at which Brands is dealing with the challenges, Conklin estimated Brands could be "looking to end this" within the next two weeks or so.

Here's hoping this isn't dragged out like Minnesota.

P.S. About Texas seceding? I say don't let the door hit ya on the way out. I would just love it if President Obama called some of these folks bluff. Don't wait for them to secede, just kick 'em out.

And charge 'em rent for each and every Federal building that they can't afford to buy outright.

And everyone who doesn't want to pay any taxes can move to the Free Nation of Texas and try to defend that border.

Good luck with that.

What’s wrong with this picture???

You’re kidding right?  You’re actually quoting FOX Noise as a reputable source of information???  I wouldn’t believe anything that comes out of their collective ‘pie holes’ if their tongues came notarized!

What’s next?? Well… well… Glenn Schreck said it so it must be true??

You remind me of my dear late grandmother who used to quote the National Enquirer as real source of news – no difference both are tabloid trash journalism!
Jim Tedisco's hope was to be out in front on the vote count, before the challenges were reviewed. That didn't happen.  Since the Tedisco camp has way more challenges than the Murphy camp, it's likely that Murphy's margin will increase even further.

Kudos to NY for the bipartisan election board commission- that will no doubt speed the process along.
The pundits will be on this like grass on dirt. Certainly it is important to the two candidates, but the House of Reps already have a strong dem majority. It is not good news to the GOP who want to show they are relevant.  It's hard not being relevant.
Rensselaer County, guys
That's the biggest difference between Republican voters and Democrat voters-Democrats play follow the leader like blind sheep following the only shephard they think they know. no joe,no bo

Wow.  It's astounding to me that you don't realize that Republicans do THE SAME THING.  Their Shepherd is none other than Rush Limbaugh.  Palin tries to be someone in the party but at this point she's an afterthought and you guys know it.

HELP ! HELP !
I'm a REPUBLICAN and I DESERVE TO WIN !!

WHY CAN'T I WIN ??

Michael Steele, will you RESIGN ??

Maybe you need another TEA PARTY to get Tedisco over the top

Calling Noirm Coleman !!
WHERE ARE YOU, CRYBABY ???
Ok i hope this gets posted!! I have but one comment about the so called Tea Party, where were the minorities?? It took a few days for the media to address this question after the Republican convention, which had horrible minority representation. This so called out rage had even worst minority representation. Am i to believe that as a minority i am not a part of America that these so called "tea baggers" find relevent? Please don't say that all black's blindly support the President because of his race, we pay taxes as well and we have concerns about building high deficits as well, but we also now a racist movement when we see one! This was not about real concerns for Americans, this was a crying party for a small section of society who absolutely can't stand the fact that we have a half black/ half white POTUS!! Nobody offered any real American solutions, only disguised vitriol for Racist remarks! These were nothing more than i hate our black President rallies!! It was shameful and very disenginious, and a mockery to such movements as the civil rights movements which involved all races and all religions coming together for a real common cause!! Where was the outrage when President Bush was running our country's deficit through the roof? Where was the "organized" resentment to taxes under the past administration? We get our first minority President and it doesn't even take 100 dys. before "some" racist white americans want to start dumping tea and "discussing" a revolution! Erick Holder was correct when he stated that when it comes to Race, America is still a nation of COWARDS!!

So how much longer might this take? "  "It's over when it's over," Conklin said.

Are you kidding? It's never over in the Republican's eye. A prime example is MN.
BtW: Greta on Fox Noise made  another ugly statement last night; about Secession.  So maybe that's the Gop's idea of it being over.

These people (Fox Noise) need to realize  what they're advocating is deleterious to this nation and themselves.
Wait a minute here, didn't republicans re-elect President Bush after the disaster of his first four years?

I am trying to be patient here but does anyone in IL actually learn reading comprehension or do they read revisionist history only?

Go Tarheels! (2005/2009)
From Yesterday's HuffPost:

‘…Of course, the real arbiter of how much good will Coleman has left comes from the voters in Minnesota . And on this front, the former Senator seems to be on his last legs. A Public Policy Polling survey released on Wednesday showed that, by a two-to-one margin, Minnesotans believed that Coleman should concede the Senate race.

"63% think that Norm Coleman should concede," the study finds. "59% think [Gov.] Tim Pawlenty should certify Al Franken as the winner of the election."…’

We’re witnessing the rise of Crybaby Conservatives

They refuse to accept defeat

8 years ago Ari Fleisher said:  ‘elections have consequences’

And his boss George Bush pushed a hard right agenda

George Bush and his failed Presidency were repudiated by American voters

They gave Barack Obama the reigns to government

TOO BAD !!

Get over yourselves !!

I think that the good people of Texas should show Mr. Perry what they think of him and show up in droves for the next election.  Send a message and vote out every wacko nutjob that takes being part of this country for granted.  That goes for those people in alaska too.

Notice that both these countries are based in the oil industry??  It makes you wonder who's pulling the strings.

>>> As has been reported, Tedisco has challenged far more ballots than Murphy. Translation: Plainly, there are likely more Murphy ballots out there than Tedisco ones. <<<

Maybe, but that only cuts for Murphy if more challenged Murphy ballots are accepted than challenged Tedisco ballots.  Tedisco no doubt depends on the slim possibility that it could cut the other way.  He's entitled to hope, just like Coleman.

Nothing constructive.  Big surprise.  And you wonder why your party's ratings are in the toilet.  You cannot offer anything of substance.

You seem to be the unhappy one.  Why don't *you* leave, and solve your own problem?  Oh right, that requires action, and the courage of your convictions, two things you sorely lack.
HEY, I thought yesterday's teabaggings were supposed to make the GOP relevant again!  Looks like they came too late to help Tedisco.

http://jawillie.blog.com
Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! The party of no has got to go!! Time to move our nation forward, and leave the clinically insane individuals on the far "freaky" right behind. Their mental illness is too extreme, and their continued treasonous behavior is a political joke. The "Gross Odd People" (GOP), and the "Really Not Competent" (RNC) are desperate political hacks. The continued "spewing" of Lunatic Limbaugh is just mentally ill in so many ways. They have no hope, no future, and no productive solutions to help our nation. "Nutty Newt" is not the answer, and certainly "Puppet Palin" the "puke" of politics in not either. The GOP/RNC are still up to their continued political tricks of attack-distract, deny-lie, and just out right treasonous messages. As for Texas wanting to leave the union? Now that is truely mentally ill behavior, and reactionary thinking that will lead to political/economic madness. As for the tea bag joke of yesterday? The only thing that should be bagged! Is the mentally ill poltical/economic messages of the GOP/RNC, and then throw them in the river for good. Go NY!!

Figured someone would start ranting soon enough about race.  There were a number of African-Americans at the Tea Party I attended.  Didn't do an actual head count though, nor do I think anyone was out specifically seeking minority 'representation.'  Why does it even matter?   Do you specifically look for minority faces in the crowd?  Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of striving for equality to even notice that?
Nashville,I can gar-in-tee that the republicans see this case in Minnesota as a test, they are pushing the limits, slithering around like a snake. The lower they go the better they feel.Ginsberg and the gang of RNC-GOP lawyers are on life support, they stated in the local rag that they where puzzled by the three judge panals findings didn't favor them,so the whin-a-thon goes on.To them it's biz as usual.Obstruct, act befuddled, whin like school girls, and hope they can find a court with THERE type of judges.Mr Murry you would be hard pressed to find a better lawyer then Mark Ellis, this guy turned a army of RNC heavy weights into rubble, and i don't mean Barney,he made them look like fools, and to date still is.

I wrote you a nice post to answer your question about the censorship but Domenico chose not to print it even though I did my best to clean it up and even though it's the same stuff that is written by libs at George W. Bush, Palin. etc, on this very blog, First Read.

I have to believe that Dommenico is covering for Mark Murray because I asked what his problem was? And because I say THAT this won't be printed.

People trusting them for ACCURATE which btw means: precise correct truthful etc... news & commentary - those are NOT 3 adjectives I would use to describe FOX NOISE that's for sure!

Bu@@sh@t News! Is something that would come to mind as 'Fair & Balanced' when referencing them!

What's the difference between a private citizen who cheats on his taxes and a politician who cheats on his taxes?

The private citizen pays up with interest or goes to jail.

The politician gets a 6 figure job with the Obama administration.

Hope all you folks got your taxes in by Wednesday.  For your sake, you better have paid the full amount.  We have to make up for the shortfall created by the lying tax evading scumbags in D.C.
Bushies still don't get it...your 15 minutes of fame are over...your trickle down the pant leg, tax cutting economics just didn't work for the majority of Americans, including most of you. Throw in domestic spying, huge deficits and spiriling debt, terri schiavo and the fools over on faux news leadign you around by the nose and you wonder why a majority of us soundly rejected your policies, candidates and party.

Here's to hoping that someone will respond to this:
to everyone that attended the Tea Parties yesterday:

I appreciate that you're so passionate about this country, even if we disagree on politics.  From what I've read, it appears that you, and others like you, are concerned with government spending.  What I am curious to know is, what spending do you want to cut?

If we had not spent a single dime on the bailouts, and none of the healthcare, education, and energy expenditures in the proposed budget were passed, we would still be running a massive deficit, with looming tax increases on the horizon to pay for the past three decades of government spending.

So my question is, what would you cut?  As I see it, there are really only two areas that would result in significant drops in spending: Social Security and Medicare.  Would you be willing to propose massive cuts in these programs?  Who would the cuts be targeted at?

Thanks in advance for your response.

This is a new low, even for MSNBC.  To actually use pornographic innuendo to assault hardworking people who are only exercising the right to protest has to be the single most significant exhibition of bovine scatology reporting ever seen in this country. MSNBC has already become elevated to the worst provoker of distortion, out and out lies, and now the use of smut to malign Americans who stand up for their rights.   On the day you leave the air (and from what I understand that day is close), I will rejoice. MSNBC is indeed a disgrace to journalism. Also take note, that I will continue to pursue those of you I find that attempt to remain in news and use any and all the means (financial, political, and social) at my disposal to thwart your efforts.
Hello First Read participants.

My son had directed me to this website to view varying opinions on the political situation in the US.  I am 92 years old and this is my second year learning the computer, internet, etc..  Well I have been reading this website for over six months now and I have to tell you I am extremely discouraged with American citizens.

I have never in my life read such rude, crude remarks regarding an American President, Democratic Party and the Republican Party.  These past six months, I have sat back as an observer wondering why so much vitriol outbreaks.  I can’t believe that most of you would be like this in real life.  So the only conclusion I can come up with is because of the anonymity of writing something online.  Is there really so much hate for varying views?  If so, I can only conclude that we will never come together for the common good.

But the question really is – where are the varying views?  Only a few seem to write about their views but are repudiated by someone else without saying why or what their view is.  I told my son that I am wasting my time here.  I have been around for a long time and have never felt this discouraged by what I have read on this website.  Most of you should be ashamed of yourselves, wash your mouths out with soap, take a valium, or just go away.  Another thing that is frightening is that half of you have lost the art of writing and spelling.  I was an English teacher in my past life – and now I feel that was a waste of time.
Do you specifically look for minority faces in the crowd?  Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of striving for equality to even notice that?

Dem's have never been able to get past this point. It is not in their moral character or fiber. As Dr. M.L. King's great speech suggested, that a man be judged not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character. Brilliant!

To bad the Dem's choose to play the race game and card with such leadership and guidance as this.

Dem's can not see people as people, they can only see color, race or ethniticity.

to We -- the scary part of your statement is that people actually do watch Fox Noise for information. I just can't figure out why, unless it's to reinforce their own ideas/opinions. The fact that Fox calls itself "fair & balanced" is the funniest part - I've often wondered if they themselves actually believe that. Who's your twin, Roger Ailes?
Is it just my imagination, or is it a lot testier around here than usual today?  Whoever said that tea is good for you probably ought to rethink that.

Sheesh.

From Huff Post:

'...New York Gay Marriage Bill Introduced By Governor Paterson

NEW YORK — Gov. David Paterson announced plans Thursday to legalize same-sex marriage in New York, making a political gamble that he can ride the momentum of other states that have recently allowed the practice.

The proposal is the same bill the Democrat-controlled state Assembly passed in 2007 before it died in the Senate, where the Republican majority kept it from going to a vote. Democrats now control the Senate, but opponents are vowing to make sure this one fails, as well.

The governor's approval ratings have plunged to below 20 percent, and it's still unclear how the legislation will play in the state. Paterson says gay marriage is a crucial issue of equal rights in America that cannot be ignored.

"I'm introducing a bill to bring marriage equality to the state of New York," Paterson said to applause, surrounded by leaders including Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

Paterson, who is black, framed the issue in sweeping terms, invoking Frederick Douglass and Harriet Beecher Stowe and drawing a parallel between the fight to eliminate slavery in the 1800s to the current effort to allow gay marriage.

"Rights should not be stifled by fear. What we should understand is that silence should not be a response to injustice. And that if we take not action, we will surely lose," Paterson said.

Paterson said gay and lesbian couples are denied as many as 1,350 civil protections _ such as health care and pension rights _ because they cannot marry...'

It will take time, and it may not happen this time, but eventually the discrimination against gays will end. Just like people protested the end of slavery, women voting, and civil rights, eventually people will realize gay marriage does not pose a threat.

Palomino,

If you want your comments posted you need to start them with the above lines.

MSNBC has to eliminate most of your comments to keep up their 3 to 1 ratio of left rants.  They do this to make it look like america is really this far left (like they are)

This probably wont get posted either - unless the first three lies confuse them!

Good luck!
Most Military Ballots will probably turn out to be 60-40 GOP To DEM, and the other ballots, since I do not know the area, will be anyone's guess.  How many court battles will be ahead with this one?
