Just read an AP report: the percentage of Americans that think the country is on the right track rose to 48% in March as compared to 40% in February. In light of the unemployment rising, the debacle in foreign affairs etc, I found it unlikely.  So I looked into the details of the poll.

73% of the Democrats polled thought we were on the right track
17% of Independents
10% of Republicans

That made it even more suspicious as to how those numbers could result in a 48% overall right track vote.


So digging deeper, it turns out

36% of those polled were Democrats
18% Republican
26% Independent
18% None claimed

In the 2008 election the spread between Democrats and Republicans was 6.5 percentage points not 18 and independents made up 22% of the vote not 26%.

It appears that there have been similar distortions in the various polls measuring Obama's approval ratings.

Speak of the devil. Looks like a concession could come as early as tomorrow.

A finish line could be in sight in the race for the 20th Congressional District. With the numbers not looking good for Republican Jim Tedisco, sources tell Capital News 9 that Tedisco could concede to Democrat Scott Murphy as soon as Friday afternoon.

There are less than 1,000 paper ballots unopened, and Democrat Scott Murphy is leading with nearly 400 votes.

County election board workers were in Albany Thursday morning, reviewing a group of 200 votes here. Official numbers will be reported later. On Saturday, 600 ballots were counted in Saratoga County. Those numbers have not been reported yet. All of this leaves about 800 ballots to be opened.

Sounds like the only way Tedisco does not concede tomorrow is if the ballots shift toward him in a really dramatic way in the next 15 hours or so. Doubtful...'

It appears that there was a real turning point in public opinion in 1969 when Nixon took office.  Think of all the upheaval that was going on then.  We were forced to pay attention and to view the presidency with more critical eyes.  We've had the proliferation of media outlets since then and more current news available than we can possibly process.  As we have becomed more informed, our support for our presidents seems to have declined.

I am not surprised by this in the slightest.  No matter what his many Critics Say, President Obama IS the change that America has needed for a VERY long time.  I completely praise him for the work he has begun to do.

I would argue that our citizens are more partisan and less happy in general.

Perhaps the perspective should include what the recent presidents did and didn't do in the 100 days such as executive orders,  legislation passed, policy decisions etc.    

So you take 3 outliers (all higher) to manipulate your statistics.  Why not take the 20 years, or the last 5 presidents?  Shouldn't he be compared to ALL presidents for which statistics exist?

Is there no end to the media adulation of this man?  He is ubiquitous.  He is in People, In Touch, YouTube, ESPN, Jay Leno.  Howard Fineman has a great comment that he, and his family, is a reality show.  I for one am already sick of him - thank God for Susan Boyle.  Can he just stick to being president.  Maybe come up with some legislation (instead of passing it off to congress)? Maybe fill some of those treasury jobs?  Maybe do the work he is actually paid for?

Given the incredible polarization that republicans have achieved over the past 30 years, this is a more-than-remarkable achievement.  In fact, if you consider the constant and passionate -- dare I say rabid -- attacks coming from the right, it's downright stunning.  

I'm so pleased to see Obama getting the proper recognition he deserves for doing such a great job his first 100 days in the toughest ever takeover of power because he faces more problems than any other president in history.  I'm so loving how the repugnant ones are cringing in fear of getting wiped out next election cycle as their popularity sinks to the depths of despair.

umm  I hate to tell you this dave, but that's consistant with how the population is made up.  If there are more people that label themselves democrats, then that's the percentage they should poll.

I bet a good portion of the independant and none claimed were prior republicans, but are too ashamed to associate themselves with the party now.

Listening to the remaining Republican supporters is indicative of a desperate and ignorant base. They are truly "blinded by the right" They have heard the same lies by all the GOP talking heads so much that they believe them, despite all facts to the opposite.

I agree with those who say that you cannot realistically compare President Obama's approval ratings to those of Kennedy, Eisenhower, Johnson or Reagan.

Whether we want to admit it or not, there are those in our beloved country who dislike Obama for no other reason than the color of his skin or his middle name.  This is something that these other Presidents did not have to contend with.  Their appoval numbers were based mostly on their body of work and not on any racist leanings or Muslim fear tactics.

I say that Obama having an approval rating this high given the huge mess this country is in (as well as other personal aspects about himself that he cannot change), is probably equilavlent to the ratings of Kennedy and Reagan...if not more!

Nixon was great on foreign policy, Johnson excelled in domestic policy. Kennedy was good at both as was Ike (I like Ike). Reagan was okay on foreign policy and terrible on domestic policy as was Bush Sr. Clinton neither excelled on foreign nor domestic policy but didn't fail either and seems to be pretty good at economic policy. G.W. Bush was incompetent and corrupt all the way around. G. Ford was just a place holder until a new election could be had. Carter did well in foreign policy but only so so domestically. In that respect he acted more like a Republican than a Democrat. So far President Obama seems to be doing a good job at restoring America's reputation abroad and trying very hard to get the economy back on track. He has a great domestic agenda too. I hope he can accomplish his agenda. It is huge and even if he accomplishes half of it he will have done better than many of his predecessors. One hundred days is hardly enough to really judge how well a President is going to do. Looking at their ratings at the end of their term is more like it.

Alan just to educate you on what it means to be black in America. Black Americans when the first in any office, role or position are watched like hawks all the time. We are required to go above and beyound the expectations of other races or we are not worthy of the position. We are watched and critiqued to the size of arms,nose and bottoms to what accessories we wear with our clothing.

It is a lesson that many of us are taught when we are just little toddlers that your best is not good enough in the USA you have to go above and beyound. We are expected to exceed beyound success.Both the President and First Lady are highly educated people and very intelligent, but for many this is not enough. Yet less educated indivduals are not even given a second look (Palin, Bush..)

It's a sad reality, but nevertheless it is the reality. Inspite of the terrible situation we are in econmically and all the other things that are facing us, regardless of the accomplishments made, the high approval rating President Obama will be expected to go above and beyound what may be humanly impossible for any woman or man.

Search yourselves Americans is the excessive watching of the President, about the state we are in econmically or is more so about a man who has choosen and considered by many American regardless of being bi-racial make up is in the eyes of many BLACK and for no real reason at all many fear that and refuse to admit it.

I, too, question the AP results; their methodology is questionable, at best.  However, take from it what you want.  It is more of a problem for the AP polling arm than for anyone else.  Why?

Do you remember the Roper Poll?  they'd been around FOREVER.  In 1993, they called the elections in NYC and New Jersey, (gubantorial race) for the Democrats running by landslide numbers.

Dinkins lost.  So did Florio.

In the next election cycle, their numbers were just as skewed.  then, they disappeared-no one bought their data.

Pollsters sell a service; if the service is unreliable, no one buys it and they go out of business.  Take a look at Zogby-once, the most respected of all polling organizations; now, practically invisable.

Remember one important fact:  in last year's election, only two polling organizations predicted the outcome EXACTLY as it turned out.  Those two organizations were Rasmussen and Pew Research.  

Numbers do not mean crap! Any hack accountant that worked in the Bush-Cheney Commerce Department can do that! Oh! That's right! They already have! What counts is the job our new President is trying to do. He is doing very well so far, and just keeping "Crazy Cantor's Cronies" at bay is a full time job. Our new President has not tortured anyone, and has not started illegal wars for profit. President Obama has done more positive things than "Brainless Bush" did in 8 years. Time to move forward America!!

Could it have been scientists that were Eugenicists that designed the virus that would like to lessen the world population Hmmmmm - Just in time to distract folks from all the noise about the torture cover up as well!
