Abortion foe declines Notre Dame award

From NBC's Christopher Wilson
Mary Ann Glendon, a conservative Harvard law professor who was U.S. ambassador to the Vatican under George W. Bush, has announced that she will not be accepting the Laetare Medal at the University of Notre Dame’s commencement ceremony on May 17. In her letter to Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins, Glendon stated that she would no longer be accepting, citing the conflict with President Barack Obama’s presence as both a commencement speaker and a recipient of an honorary degree.

Glendon is staunchly anti-abortion, and she expressed disappointment that Notre Dame was awarding someone -- in this case the president of the United States -- whose position on abortion is so starkly different from Catholic Church's and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops'.

“I could not help but be dismayed by the news that Notre Dame also planned to award the president an honorary degree,” she wrote. “This, as you must know, was in disregard of the U.S. bishops’ express request of 2004 that Catholic institutions ‘should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles’ and that such persons ‘should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.’ That request, which in no way seeks to control or interfere with an institution’s freedom to invite and engage in serious debate with whomever it wishes, seems to me so reasonable that I am at a loss to understand why a Catholic university should disrespect it.”

Glendon also pointed to statements by Father Jenkins -- “We think having the president come to Notre Dame, see our graduates, meet our leaders, and hear a talk from Mary Ann Glendon is a good thing for the president and for the causes we care about", he said -- which she thought attempted to turn the commencement ceremony into a sort of debate on the issue.

“It is not the right place, nor is a brief acceptance speech the right vehicle, for engagement with the very serious problems raised by Notre Dame’s decision -- in disregard of the settled position of the U.S. bishops -- to honor a prominent and uncompromising opponent of the Church’s position on issues involving fundamental principles of justice.”

The Notre Dame campus has been buzzing since the announcement last month that Obama would be at the Class of 2009’s graduation. Anti-abortion groups have already stated they plan to be out in force at the May 17th ceremony, while the Notre Dame student body prepares for more unwanted attention as the end of the semester approaches.

The Laetare medal (pronounced Lay-tah-ray) was established in 1883, and is considered one of the oldest and prestigious awards that can be given to an American Catholic. It’s given out annually at the University of Notre Dame commencement ceremony. Previous recipients include President John F. Kennedy, Catholic Worker founder Dorothy Day, and fictional American president Martin Sheen, who received the award last year.

*** UPDATE *** “President Obama is disappointed by former Ambassador Mary Glendon’s decision," Spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki, "but he looks forward to delivering an inclusive and respectful speech at the Notre Dame graduation, a school with a rich history of fostering the exchange of ideas.  While he is honored to have the support of millions of people of all faiths, he does not govern with the expectation that everyone sees eye to eye with him on every position, and the spirit of debate and healthy disagreement on important issues is part of what he loves about this country.”

Good for Glendon. At least there is one principled person around today.
Let the liberals start the Mary Ann Glendon bashing in 3, 2, 1 . . .
How about that? Someone doing the right thing, standing up for what they believe in. Some would call that person righteous.
Well said Father Jenkins - to bad others can't be as opened minded as alot of us.  This is not about abortion, being a democrat or republican, it's about sharing with grads, talking to them about futures.

----------------

Now Notre Dame is joining the crowd at giving out awards to fictional people. Just like the Noble Peace Prize was given to AlGore.
Queue the Pro Life/Pro Dead Soldiers/Pro Torture campaign in 3-2-1.

whatever,...
I feel sorry for people who can't function in the world as it actually is, but instead try to bend it to their own personal will.

Closing your eyes, putting your fingers in your ears and humming loudly will not make the people you disagree with disappear.

I think the Reverand Mother from the Sound of Music said it best:

"These walls were not built to shut out problems.
You have to face them. "

Mary Ann Glendon is well within her rights to refuse the award.

And I am well within mine not to care.

Its not about being open-minded! It is about right and wrong and ND is a RELIGIOUS SCHOOL not a secular one. nEveryone that attends know this and if they object, they can attend elsewhere....
Ms. Glendon:  Your puting and self-righteous petulance because things aren't going your way is childish and asinine.  It's a good thing you declined, as such awards usually go to grown-ups.
And yet how many of us on the left disagreed with Obama's choice of pro-life homophobe extremist Rick Warren to do the invocation at the inauguration?  Did we all go stomping off in a huff like children who didn't get their way.  It's amazing the display of childishness coming from the right.  I find it unbelievable that they can't see how this further marginalizes them from the rest of the country.  It's one thing to stand up for principles, but geez people, pick your battles.

Again, this is why no one is listening to you anymore.

Has she similarly objected to Notre Dame or other Catholic organizations when they have invited and/or honored supporters of the Death Penalty or the Iraq War (both of which the Catholic Church has firmly denounced)?  I admit I have not researched her positions, and I would support her principled stand if that is the case.  If not, she's a hypocrite.
What a Bush appointee carrying the republican banner of NO.  One has to wonder at times, who is running ND,the current admin or the alum, sems like the alums and there almighty dollar are all that matters to ND,that and there BCS bowl game. This is what make ND a place to question it's moral standard,I guess they have a republican mind set.If you don't agree with everything we say then you are not worthy.Well for my money I'll take a school that is open minded to what other think, and how others feel, but ND dosen't think there should be any debate,It's either our way,or no way, where have I heard this before? One should not wonder why so many are leaving there church.
Hey Glendon, take your ball and go home...you big baby. What do you want to bet this hypocrite supported Gitmo torture and is a proponent of the death penalty?
She is doing a disservice to her self and other that support her belief.  By hiding she will not bring attention to her cause and giving the university a one sided argument.
I commend her for taking a stand for what she believes and what I believe. I am a not a Catholic, I am a Christian and I support the Catholic Church's position on abortion.
Just another example of religion fostering hate and animosity.
Hyocrite!!  Anti abortion, they seem to care about unborn but what about Bush's war and the innocent childred killed, they were alive and living.
I guess this is alright with the neo cons.
Christians my foot. Every life is precious.  But they seem to only care about the ones that aren't born into the world yet and don't care if we kill inncoent
little ones who are alreday alive and well.
Please don't tell me about war either and give the
excuse that this is why children die.  Iraq no one
had to die in that war.  So lets just call it as it
is and Bush and Cheney are murderers.
At least Obama is honest and a decent person.
Obama/Biden making us a great nation again!!
Thank God!!
What a hypocrit.
Looks like Glendon is Bible thumping to get her name in the paper again. So transparent.

She is very hypocritical. If this was about the issue she claims, then she would have boycotted ND in 2001 when Bush spoke. He is an advocate of capital punishment. Why didn't conservative Catholics boycott Bush for his stance?

Of course, this is really about losing the election.

What part of  "PRO-CHOICE" is not getting through to the screaming right-wing, bible thumping, Notre Dame, give me my gun crowd!??????

Just as it is a right to bible thump, it is a RIGHT to have a CHOICE!!!!!!!

No doubt, this is the same crowd that believes in TORTURE.  Never mind that it is against all LAWS!  Talk about Cherry PIcking!
Don't let the door hit you in the a@@ on the way out!

Amazing the way they believe 'life' is to be so cherished - but then think it's totally acceptable to send young men & women off to die in a war built on lies!!

And don't even get me started on their new little hobby of TORTURE!

Despicable F'n Hypocrits!
Good for Glendon...someone who walks the talk and has the integrity to stand up for her faith's teachings.
Good for you Glendon,
Views from the Dark Ages founded in the language of the Inquisition are best left in Boston anyway.
Okay and I am suppose to care why. Is she agaisnt the Death Penalty also? Standing up for your principles should have begun with you standing up against the Bush Administration.

I am sorry but I am not impressed
Good for Mary Ann Glendon.  She done humans proud (in standing against widespread killing of little humans).
You lose all credibility when you give awards to fictional people.  Perhaps it's time to equate Notre Dame with the 8-track plater.  Outdated.
Wah!  My side lost the election so I'm going to take my ball and go home to pout!!!
As a Democrat, I have no problem with Ms. Glendon's decision to not accept the medal. The fact is that she has made what seems to be a well-thought out, reasoned decision that complies with her moral and ethical principles. It wasn't vindictive or harsh, and there is something to be said for that in today's polarized society. My only regret for her is that she will not have that recognition that she deserves for her accomplishments. However, the good Lord has a way of working these things out. I've no doubt that she will receive her recognition in some other way.
WOW !!
What a BLOW to Notre Dame

Ask Mary Ann Glendon what SHE THINKS about Torture
What is her measured opinion about water boarding ?
Do she like it ?

How about water boarding someone 183 in a MONTH !!

That's more than SIX TIMES A DAY !!!
The people responsible for that hsould be Tried and Convicted and Sentenced to Life imprionment !!!

Does little Mary Ann Glendon supoport water boarding ?
Also think about our soldiers and their families.
God Bless Them All!!
We have the best military in the world and now we
have a Commander in Chief who cares about them.
WOW! Why don't they just excommunicate everyone who ever attended or plans to attend Notre Dame and then start burning at the stake anyone related to them. Can you say OVERREACTION!
According to T Thomas Moore us Liberals are going to start bashing the Glendon's of the world who are basically hyprocrits who love to talk about the santity of life than wholeheartedly supported the biggest lying meglomanics war mongers around. So called conservatives are your classic cafateria like GOP IE., We're against abortion but for the death penalty, killing innocent civilians in a lying war is ok and support a catholic hierachy that sweeped under the rug pedophile priest.
Why would non-Catholics care what Catholics think about a "mis-directed" Catholic university, line Notre Dame.  Notre Dame is know within the Catholic community for having a large number of its staff push the university experience beyond what mainstream Catholics expect from a revered institution such as ND.  This has little to do with Obama and more to do with Catholics holding each other accountable when they go astray.  I'm proud of Mary Glendon's choice and hopefully Fr. Jenkins will see the light.
This is one of the scarier things about our country: the people who always put religion and politics first. No wonder the rest of the world is passing us up.

Remember how many liberals boycotted Bush over his abortion beliefs. Of course not, because that never happened.
Thank goodness I live in a country where we still have a right to choose...
I wonder if this got her name on the "No Fly" and "radical" lists?

God bless her for doing the right thing, and making the school's willingness to go against the wishes of the Bishop known.
As a Catholic who attended a Catholic High School in the bad old days I have to say where was all this moral indigination when my friends were getting molested. I had three friends I know of that had their lives changed forever by so called men of the cloth. Where were the rallies and protests then? Where were all these supposed protectors of the inocent? Hipocrates all!!!!!
I find this humorous..
===================================================
“I could not help but be dismayed by the news that Notre Dame also planned to award the president an honorary degree,” she wrote. “This, as you must know, was in disregard of the U.S. bishops’ express request of 2004 that Catholic institutions ‘should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles’ and that such persons ‘should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.’
=======================================================
But will back a President who sends our children off to die in a war that was based on lies and deceit. Yes  you have wonderful moral standing. Lets continue to focus on lives that have not come to fruition while ignoring lives that are being wasted in useless wars. Unless this is the Christian answer to filling the empty spots on the front lines.
What I find troubling is that the graduation ceremonies for Notre Dame students is being used as a venue to express personal views.  You can't tell me that Notre Dame has not had other commencement speakers and given honorary degrees to them whose views were not necessarily in line with those of the Catholic Church.  Yet, for some reason, they single out Pres Obama to suddenly voice their concerns.  This coming from a religion which for years ignored pedophile priests and simply transferred those priest to other parishes where they could continue preying on young, innocent boys.  Talk about audacity.

Glendon has a right to her opinion and she should have simply declined but instead chose to use it as a publicity tool to promote her views.
As for Father Jenkins response that it is only about the grads... That's the same as allowing a former Nazi to give the commencement at a Jewish institution and stating we need to just focus on the grads. I send my own children to a Catholic school and I find this "latest" decision another embarrassment on the part of the Catholic community. Exactly how do I explain to my children how a Catholic University is honoring someone who promotes something that their own Catholic school teaches them is morally wrong?
I wish that when I graduated from Notre Dame in 1974 the commencement speaker was half as dynamic as President Obama. I also wish that the self-appointed moralists would get over their rigid stances and hear what our president has to say.
yep:  Liberal: Open minded, open to new ideas, open to allowing people to make a choice on their own without stuffing their own self righteous morals and agenda down everyone's throats, I'm all about family planning and education, I'm about scientific fact and not mindless slogans and hallow ideology driven rhetoric, I'm about KNOWING things and KNOWING AND UNDERSTANDING facts, I'm about stem cell research on embryos that many fertility clinics simply throw away in the trash when not used...why not do something good with them...we're falling behind in science because the private industry could only fund so much and only fund things they KNOW have proven value...not the other way around...I'm about quality of life, not just quanity, I'm aware of overpopulation, our need to change our energy habits because of how it is affecting that quality of life on this planet, and about improving the economy with new, alternative ideas aside from those lamo ideals that drove our economy into the ground, I'm about having an open dialogue with all international leaders and not just pushing people around with bully behavior and blindsided, authoritarian rhetoric and I'm tired of the people of the party of the no, with no new ideas, nothing to offer, telling me and my children how to live...they want small government and government out of your private life (which translates they want less taxes for the wealthy and those with enormous power) but they want governemnt in your life and would love to take away your personal liberties (the patriot act) start military campaigns with devastating loss of life for either side, are pro torture (even though many psychologists, criminologists will tell you it's a very poor way to obtain information from a suspect/informant from a myriad of studies on the issue...in addition, if people don't think that usurping cruel and unusual punishment from our own constitution cannot eventually find it's way being used against our own citizens, wait a while and think again...At Least Obama is creating more transparency on the issue), are pro capital punishment, anti minority and women's rights, are pro guns (you know, we "don't" have enough problems with violence in our society...NOT!) and about the status quo and social order...and don't forget the tea bagging idiots and all their mantras, what was that about...No one knows exactly but whatever is she doesn't show up for an award, if that makes her feel superior and that much more righteous, since I know she doesn't want to spend the tax money or the time giving to orphaned, abandoned or abused children all the way through their lives, well then don't let our progress and door hit you in the rear on the way out, honey...the majority of us could care less you showed up...I'm glad Obama has the audacity to stand up for his beliefs, too and is open enough to tolerate those who oppose him by speaking at a commencement! :)
WAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!  I've got an education and appear to be intelligent, but my mind is closed tight like a steel trap.  I'm so sorry Ms. Glendon chose to act like a spoiled 5 year old.  Perhaps she's not such a great role model and it's best that she doesn't attend.  Take your toys and go home, when you're ready to act like an adult....
God for Mary Ann Glendon to hold her belief that killing unborns is bad.
What is her position on killing brown people of Iraq?  How about torture? What is her position on waterboarding?
If people want to get the president to change his stance on abortion or to get policy changed I can tell you that this is the wrong way. To be petty, vindictive, and cruel is the wrong path toward winning people over to the prolife cause. If it is the intent of all those with a prolife stance to shun completely all those people with a prochoice stance then life as we know it will cease and nobody will win. It would be far more effective if someone actually TALKED TO THE PRESIDENT! Like say the POPE. Oh gee avoiding him won't do much to helop anyone will it? It will help to make a lot of people look like idiots on the other hand, or like a bunch of sore losers.
First of all, it isn't DORIS Day, it's DOROTHY Day.  Second of all, maybe Catholics should get out of the higher ed business, if they don't know their own history.  It's too bad that Glendon is so limited and doctrinaire in her thinking.  And Al Gore is very much a real person.
More hypocrisy from the Church.  There was barely a ripple of dissent back in 2001 when GWB spoke at the ND commencement despite his staunch support of the death penalty.  He was actually more responsibe for death than a pro-choice advocate because he ACTUALLY had a hand in whether or not an accused lived or died.  The church teachings on death penalty are just as clearly stated/written as its teachings on the abortion issue and yet, so many turn a blind eye to that part of the debate.  I am so weary of those who say death by abortion is more severely a sin than death by death penalty? Why? Life is life? There should not be extinuating circumstances guiding this debate.  When will the hypocrisy end?
So now we only must follow the tenets of one religion. As a Catholic, I have no problem with Obama's stand on abortion. I don't happen to agree with him but I also understand that no two people ever agree totally on everything. My personal beliefs are mine and I have no right to force my religious beliefs on someone else. I wish others felt the same way.
Isn't this a college?  A place to learn and develop your mind?  How do you (or anyone else) gain from limiting your reach?  If you refuse because it isn't exactly the way you see it, you're eliminating your opportunity to stand for what you believe in.
The question I have is, why doesn't the student body graduating have any objection to the oncoming ceremony?  I guess the school failed to uphold Christian ideals.
