Reid to GOP: We will work with you

From NBC's Ken Strickland
As Congress prepares to vote on a budget that would include a procedural tool allowing Democrats to effectively shutout Republicans and pass sweeping health-care reform, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid today extended an olive branch across the aisle.

"Make no mistake -- we are determined to reform health care this year." Reid said in a letter to Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. "Our strong preference is to do so by working alongside you and your caucus."

Congress on Wednesday is expected to pass its budget, which will include a procedure measure known as "reconciliation" allowing Democrats to pass health-care legislation with a simple 51-vote majority. That would leave Republicans powerless to stop it (there are 58 Democrats.) Almost all major legislation moving through the Senate requires 60 votes to break filibusters, but bringing health care under reconciliation would make it filibuster-proof.

Today, Reid suggested Senate Democrats would resist using it -- in the short term -- if Republicans worked with them constructively in drafting a health-care bill. "The budget we will vote on this week gives us nearly six months to work together toward a comprehensive reform bill," he wrote. "Let's use that time to work together in our common interest rather than against each other and against the interests of the American people."

The Majority Leader never used the word "reconciliation" in his letter, but pushed back on Republicans who've already denounced the procedure as the antithesis of bipartisanship. Reid told McConnell the Senate must not "be sidetracked by squabbles about arcane Senate procedure, as some in your party seem intent to do."

That's right give the repubs enough rope to hang themselves. It's about time someone said this:
"Reid told McConnell the Senate must not "be sidetracked by squabbles about arcane Senate procedure, as some in your party seem intent to do."
What a load of bs from Reid. And the main stream media eats this garbage up. Reid, and certainly Pelosi, have no intention of working the GOP, which is their right, because "They won". But don't pull this dog and pony show of a charade that the Democrats want to work with the Republicans.
>>Reid to GOP:  We will work with you.<<

Me to Harry Reid:  For heaven's sake, WHY?

Steamroll 'em, baby.
what's he been smoking, pie in the sky, dreaming, when pigs fly; the good ol' "we pander to your fears, prejudices and ignorance" gop has said no to everything up to now, including the sec.of HHH at a time of possible world pandemic, can't see them changing now.
Why should the Republicans do anything but try to short circuit the Democrats? Nice bi-partisan move by Obama to selectively release the terror documents that put the Republicans in a bad light and not release all the documents, even back to the Clinton era, that will show that the Democrats couldn't care less about protecting the country?

Anyone think that was good move to get some bi-partisanship going in Washington?
"Make no mistake -- we are determined to reform health care this year."

The line in the sand!  Get on board Repukes, or DON'T!

It is inconceivable that these Repukes won't even support health care reform.  Oops, they certainly didn't support SCHIP for the "Children" that they so readily use in every way possible to oppose the stimulus, and freedom to choose.  HYPOCRITES!!!!!

We Won!
Why should the Republicans get on board this train wreck of a budget? Let the Democrats drive over the cliff by themselves.
Why are the Democrats even bothering to give the party of "no" any attention.? The GOP has already proven they have no intention of working with or voting for anything coming from our President or them. Our leaders must not bow to their outdated, unworkable, unAmerican demands. We voted for change and we demand it.
Let the republicans continue to self destruct.
Reid says "we will work with you"

... As long as you do what your told, when your told and shut you mouth the rest of the time.  If not we will lock you out of meetings again!

Remember GOP - Obama Won!

And if you dont like it, he will list you on his terrorist watch list or wiretap your phone.

Be careful GOP - its a trap.

Reid is just trying to get you to go along with his Multi-trillion budget - then when it fails they can blame the GOP.

When it comes to Obie's wasteful spending - the party of NO seems like a great option!

At the rate Obama is causing job losses, there won't be enough taxpayers left to pay for the free health care.
Reid to GOP we will work with you! Why? They don't want to work if you or the POTUS! Reid and the Senate should just get to work and pass the Presidents agenda! The Republican have nothing to offer they would rather fiddle while America burns! The GOP is the party of tax cuts for the rich and torture! None of which have worked for this country!
See, the President's call for increased emphasis on science has already produced flying pigs!
Thank you Sen. Reid.  When people voted for Pres. Obama last fall, they did so in great part because health care was an issue important to them.  We would prefer that a fundamental health care bill pass and be enacted with bipartisan support, but even if it does not, it will work for all Americans.  Reform of health care needs to happen now.
It really is "Us" against "Them".  The Bush tax cuts were passed by Reconciliation; which is why they are set to expire in 2010.  The majority of Americans voted for Health Care Reform.  We will take it by reconciliation; but we would all prefer a better LONG TERM solution.

Both teams have to show up and play all four quarters.  If the majority party doesn't get what they want with sportsmanship; they will take it with force (and by that I mean the 'force' of the voting public), as that is how our system is designed.

I really wish the G"NO"P would understand that by redesigning the Health Care Program, business owners stand to gain far more than some tax cuts by redistributing the benefit load away from the corporate sector.  Everyone will still pay something; but it won't be so reliant on jobs.  Imagine the number of people who are now uninsured because of layoffs.  A person's medical needs don't dissipate because they no longer have a job.  Please, for once, LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE!
It is nice for Harry Reid to give the GOP a chance to be more than just the party of NO. He shouldn't hold his breath, however, their recent history shows they will have no new ideas but only rehashed ones if any at all. They'll whine and complain but not offer up anything constructive. But is is very noble of Senator Reid to offer them another opportunity to board the train to tomorrowland instead of staying on the platform or continue to ride the train to yesteryear.
Just as it is a right to bible thump, it is a RIGHT to have a CHOICE!!!!!!!

No doubt, this is the same crowd that believes in TORTURE.  Never mind that it is against all LAWS!  Talk about Cherry PIcking!
Ed, San Antonio (Sent Monday, April 27, 2009 12:09 PM)

That pro-choice you talk about. That extend to schools too? Can I choose any school I want and have my tax dollars follow to it? How about owning a gun? If I choose to own a gun in say Washington DC, can I do that?

Or is pro-choice really pro-abortion?

Talk about cherry picking.

no one with an ounce of credibility, let alone half a brain, has blamed a single job loss on Obama...only right wing idiots like you who replay rush's sound bites on blogs like this do so...and that says alot of what you and your like are about...spreading lies upon lies and repeating them so much, you even begin to believe them as the truth, meanwhile, the level headed, intelligent, non trailer park living rest of the country, sees right through you and know better...Obama is not the cause of job losses...rather, failed republican policies for the last 8 years, and even as far back as the last 30 years with some help from willing dems, are the blame!
Does this not bother anyone out there? What the Dems are doing? Folks conservative liberal Dem or Repub Sen Reid has taken away the "need" for bipartisonship! Its gone, finished, kaput! Being forced to negotiate, to compromise, thats what has made our country different it is how we have prospered! Now whatever party happens to be in power will be able to dictate the politics of the time. Hear what Im saying! Not steer but DICTATE, their word will be final! No argument no comprimise. There will be no reason for the party in the minority to even show up! Even if you support this Admin fully, even if you think Reid and Pelosi are Gods this should scare the s*%@ out of you! Please MSNBC post this. I need to hear from Sierra sf Eric in Salinas and some more of the posters from the left? Am I the only one scared?

Oh, for the love of God, for the last time...

...OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS SWEAR AN OATH TO PROTECT THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND NOT THE COUNTRY!

If you can't do the latter without doing the former, what's the point?
How can the Republicans work with the Democrats when the Democrats have closed-door, Democrat-only, partisan meetings?  Reid's definition of Republican support is for the Republicans to blindly vote yes without reading it. (Kind of like the Democrats did with the stimulus pork bill)
To Lynette C., MD:   You're being an idiot.  You really think the democrats "couldn't care less about protecting the country" ?  I wonder if you REALLY think that, or if you need to say this just to keep playing political football for your team.  It's pathetic and childish.  The majority of americans shouldn't have to suffer while a minority politcal party tries to "short-circuit" the majority party.  I'm ready for your rationalizations.  We all are.
Let the liberals start the Mary Ann Glendon bashing in 3, 2, 1 . . .

________

Sorry to disappoint, but I am a liberal who has absolutely no problem with what she did.  Personally, I respect her for standing by her beliefs.  The school is free to choose its award recipients, and each recipient can accept or decline on an individual basis.  As long as everyone keeps it on an individual basis and leaves the school free to make its own choices, I have no problems here.

Have a nice day.
Jackson, Seattle (Sent Monday, April 27, 2009 12:32 PM)

Oh, I wasn't disappointment. You're the very rare exception to the rule. Liberals who had never heard of Glendon until a few minutes ago showed their class and grace by firing barbs at her, just because she opposes Obama. And it's not surprising. Obama people seem to be into worshipping false gods.

PS - How about we "waterboard" you and consider the question of whether or not you think you've been tortured?
America, any time you hear the word "Reform" from the government - hang on to your wallet!!
If it's such a great budget, let the Democrats go ahead and take all the credit for it without the Republicans.  Why are the Democrats so desperate for Republican buy-in if they think it's so great?
Harry why waste your effort, the party of No is happy being of NO.since they have nothing but.I for one would think smarter heads would prevail, there is only so far you can get being stupid, and you can't fix it,says the tater. So taking a honest look at the GOPers party is becoming scarier then Dick Cheney's shooting, dead eye Dick, always hits his mark.I must admit thou, they seem all to happy being left at the station, all dress up and kNOw where to go.As I remember it was the GOPer's who used RE-CON to get what they wanted passed on tax breaks for the rich, for the war spending, and I don't re=call the Dems crying over it.Heard there is a project that needs funding,Joe and Patty B on Moran Joe don;t think waterboarding is torture, then by all means let them come out of there chickenhawk nest and we will see.Let the two chic's try there hand at it since the closest they have been to a military base is to give a speech, serve,I don't think so.Maybe do a collage tour and they can show students how much fun being boarded can be.
Is the GOP the party of NO?

Lets hope so!

Obama bows to dictators - GOP SAYS NO
Obama spends trillions we dont have -  GOP SAYS NO
Obama approves killing just born kids -  GOP SAYS NO
Obama hires tax cheats for his cabinet -  GOP SAYS NO
Obama visits 57 States -  GOP SAYS NO
Obama blames America for world troubles - GOP SAYS NO
Obama record deficits - GOP SAYS NO
Obama promises jobs - delivers unemployment - GOP SAYS NO

I say NO to Obie and his trickle up poverty economy.

Prior to Obie becoming president - NO was never so good!
The procedural tool know as reconciliation effectively cuts out any debate. That means that the budget will be passed with no discussion in the Senate. That is not good. That is not the way a democracy works. That is not an olive branch from Reid.
Let the government run the healthcare system.  Medicaid is pretty much flawless.  Keep giving up your freedoms America.  Why should anybody have to work for anything?  Yeah socialism!
If the federal government would put federal employees, including elected officials under the same heath care and retirement programs provided senior citizens, then there would be serious reform on Medicaid, Medicare and Social security.
Unless you are rich enough to pay for private health insurance once you reach 65 and retire, most Americans will be under a socialized medical plan.
Civil servants, federal employees and elected officials do not pay social security taxes. Instead, they have a separate retirement system that replaces a majority of their pre-retirement income.
When people hold the so-called tea parties, they should confront their elected officials about the disparity between the public and government medical and retirement plans. Quit letting these people blow smoke screens and make you think that fighting gay marriage and immigration issues are the worst evils facing this country. That some suicidal bomber will blow up your local mall.
“We have met our enemy and he is us”
Too bad the GOP won't return the favor. Irresponsible...

http://www.political-buzz.com
Sure, the GOP messed their own party up, possibly to the point of implosion, thanks to the misguided policies of the Bush administration and the chief dunderhead, Karl Rove. What they won't tell you is that the Obama administration, while liberal on social issues, is spending our country into oblivion. Hyperinflation and the collapse of the dollar are next up on our economic road to ruin. This is an economic fact, no matter how the talking heads at the networks try to spin it.
S. Snead, so where were you with GWB was golfing during the war?

Julie, Palm Desert, CA (Sent Monday, April 27, 2009 12:59 PM)

Bush never golfed after the Iraq war began.

Too funny, all you people jumping on the liberal band wagon must have selective memory. It seems not that long ago the Democrats were doing the same thing. It is the same thing different year both sides of the aisle have done this.

Healthcare reform? Give me a break what Obama and the democrats want is Socialized medicine. The issue at hand is the only evidence that they give that it works is Switzerland. Lets not look at Canada, the United Kingdom, France, etc. it is a failed experiment. The factual evidence does not support the claims.
Reid is totally doing this for PR.  Yes, Republicans can join on board and be credited for working in a "bipartisan" way, only if they agree 100% with the "partisan" result, but as for trying to have some real input into the final product.  Nope, says vassal Reid.
Let them do what they will do and then they(democrapts) will own this enitre debactle
I voted and worked hard in my Ohio Republican district to elect Democrats. My dad did it before me. My dad often said that at times he was discouraged because the chances of a Democrat winning were next to none. Anyone in a minority position in any organization must accept the reality and yet try to make a difference to encourage an opposition to make some changes. If the Republican Party rejects the possiblity of working positively, they should accept their fate of not being heard.
Wow, where's the trust?  Look at these posts!  Think there's a lttle paranoia goin' on?

How about:  OK, I'll make sure my rep works with your rep if you make sure your rep works with mine?

Naw.. could never work... this is too hard.
I want my  FREE health care and my FREE college. Second thought forget the college, I will stay on welfare!! :-)
America is doomed.  Not because of Bush, and not because of Obama.

Someone said "It really is "Us" against "Them".".  Unless the childish, polarized thinking changes to positive cooperation to solve what almost all of us agree are the common problems, America will fall apart in chaos.  We don't need bi-partisanship - we need non-partisanship.  Stop the hate and anger.  Do something positive for your country.

One America, or no America.  It's our choice.
Please advise America if the same people that have charitably written 70.000+ pages of tax code (based on a unique number, income), will now be turned loose on our health problems ( cancer, diabetes, stroke, heart, all those simple things)
Absolute power corrupts absolutely.  The Republicans were wrong when they used the power in the wrong away and were rightfully defeated.  Now, we see the Democrats using the same strong arm tactics Republicans were denounced for using.  Yes, the Republicans will cry foul.  Yes, the Democrats will say they tried.  Yes, the same political game is being played out and will continue to be played out regardless of which party is in control.  Let the children in Congress have fun.
The GOP offered a budget proposal that spends less money, taxes less, and borrows less, but no one will even look at it, why? Furthermore, those elected to Congress are responsible to represent the beliefs of constituents, so if many of us do not want to pay for you to have "Free" healthcare, our representatives should support that position. If "Free Healthcare" works so well, why did Hawaii drop it last year? Because the state couldn't afford it! It makes no sense to take a failed state level policy and make it national. I will say 'no' to that anyday and I demand my representatives do the same.
Were it (the national budget) not such a serious issue some of the comments posted here would be laughable.

When Democrat Bill Clinton left office there was no national deficit but a national surplus. (How quickly the Republicans posting here have forgotten that.)

It was 8 years of your Republican Bush who created this massive deficit. Certainly not Democrat Obama whom has only been in office for just under 100 days.

The Republicans were voted out of power in both 2006 and more in 2008 for very good reasons. They have nearly brought this country of ours to ruin. Between greed and just plain stupidity.

I am but 52 years old with the hopes of living many more decades. In that time, God willing, hopefully I will never again see a bunch of similar idiots running our country as those who were from 2001 to 2008. The country just can no longer afford or tolerate Republican leaders like that.
Ok.  Now the ball is in their court.  It'll be interesting to see how the GOP responds to this.  Are they going to continue to whine and pout and throw tantrums, or are they going to take Reid up on his offer.  Either way, the message is "we can do this WITH you, or WITHOUT you."

The righties here have already given an indication of their position.  They'll continue to be spoiled children on this without even acknowledging that the Dem leadership is at least TRYING.  I defy any of you to tell me any idea, ANY AT ALL, that the GOP has come up with in the past 100 days.

Guess we all may as well just work for the government, that is what it is coming to. People need to wake up in the country, everything is not free, it comes with a price. Yes I simpathize to everyone who has lost a job, but in the end we need more jobs. Who's going to want to start a business here in the U.S. with all the taxes: Federal, State, Local, Medicare, Social Security, and whatever else. Truth be told, the UAW ruined the automakers. Some benefits are good, but after a while the cost is just too much and you have to change. Why don't the idiot's in Washington do something about the true reason why healthcare is sky rocketing out of control? Illegal immigrants and people who just live off of wealfare. Heck in in SC the people on welfare are fatter than the ones who work. You ought to get behinde them in the grocery store, I couldn't afford to eat what they buying. America needs to start cleaning house, period end of sentence!
