Sebelius takes lead role

So far, we've seen Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano out front of the swine flu outbreak.

But this morning, newly minted Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius took a leading role with a news conference at the agency.

Sebelius, who was confirmed by the Senate last night 65-31, said it is an "honor" to take a leadership position at HHS, but credited the agency's continuing strategy that has been "underway for some time."

She introduced Dr. Richard E. Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control, who broke news via a video that the number of confirmed cases of swine flu in the United States have jumped to 91 in 10 states -- double the number of states previously reported by the CDC.

"Again, these numbers are almost out of date by the time I say them," Besser said.

Sebelius said she met with officials last night at the White House after swearing to be briefed on the outbreak. And she warned that there will be more cases and likely more deaths.

Sebelius wanted to give a sense of reassurance, that she's fully briefed and that HHS is doing everything possible and "working closely" with state and local officials.

She assured that there are enough treatments of the medicines Tamiflu and Relenza and that the "government has begun shipping supplies to states with confirmed cases."

"I want to make it clear," the former Kansas governor said, "these drugs are effective in treating those who have contracted the H1N1 virus."

But she warned that the flu is always serious and people should take basic actions to prevent further spread or getting sick -- things like washing hands often, covering mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing and not going to work or school if you or your children exhibit flu-like symptoms.

Thank God, it's about time. It is a shame that it took something like this virus to finally get her confirmed. Another example of the republicans playing politics with the health and safety of it's citizens in an attempt to derail President Obama's agenda.
Nice to have the Sec of HHS onboard and showing some leadership at this time. This crisis will pass and now wen can have faith that the Feds are responsive and on point to do their job.

New info flu from the CDC

The GOP obstructionism on Sebelius clearly was hampering the administration's flu response. Gibbs was just being diplomatic in denying that yesterday.

I'm sure glad that Kathleen Sebelius is now taking the lead role in the swine flu problem.  Janet Napolitano is a fine public servant but this problem really isn't her balliwick since it's a health issue.  I'm sure glad that we don't have McNasty and Sinner Sarah running things as they'd make all the wrong decisions and would put us in a bigger hole than we're in now.

Why do I have to switch to cnn to watch the rest of the Obama town hall meeting?  Because David Gregory has an ego problem thinking he's more interesting than Obama and he isn't.  MSNBC tv almost always makes this mistake of cutting out from an Obama townhall meeting with him answering questions from the crowd.  Please MSNBC tv get a clue and start showing Obama's complete townhall meetings so those of us who want to watch it have to switch to cnn (fox lite).

In Obama We Trsut!
If the Martians attack will the Republicans confirm the head of NASA ??

It'll only take an inter-planetary War

It is good to see one more of the Obama appointees hitting the floor running. We have so many big problems that need to be tackled that any delay would merely make things worse. Baptism by fire often is the true test of ones abilities. Let's see how Secretary Sebelius does.
The media has a responsibility to all of us when reporting on this outbreak.  It's a simple reminder to wash hands frequently and stay home if you're feeling ill.

Most officials interviewed have stressed these simple rules, but all commentators should reiterate them.  It cannot be said enough.

9 Republican Senators voted for Kathleen Sebelius.  Both from her home state (nice to have her out of the way, I'm sure is their thinking).  Two Republican Senators from Texas voted NO, two (R's) from Arizona voted No.  Aren't they concerned like Glenn Beck about the swine flu crossing the border?  PS.  Two of her (R) yes votes came from retiring Senators.  Guess they aren't afraid of being castigated by their own party.

There is a 'funny' joke in the whole Swine Flu situation.  Think, "We'll get on board with the President's agenda when Pigs Fly" (sic, swine flew) - Eric could probably fix it.
Good, I hope she does a better job than that bubblehead Napolitano. I still don't understand why the Mexican boarder has not been closed.
So you didn't want to vote for her on an Abortion stance....a wedge issue, and a baby dies today in Texas -- See where I am going with this?
I do want to heartily endorse a commenter who was disappointed that MSNBC did not telelvise the entire town hall meeting today.  I also think that if the Gibbs daily press conference comes after Andrea Mitchell that also should be totally on air & live.  The news that replaces it with the lame Contessa Brewer  is just a repeat & nothing new....

Also I agree that David Gregory is not a good interviewer and the really good weighty person on MSNBC is Andrea Mitchell.  She calls it as it is just like Russet.
Sebelius will be a great HHS secretary.  It's about time that she was confirmed - only took a little thing like swine flu to push it though.

I'm impressed with the 9 Republican senators who broke rank (and we all know they'll be in trouble with the GOP powers for doing so).  I truly respect that they put our health before their party.  Thank you.  Regrettably of the 9, one is now a Democrat (Specter), two are the moderates from Maine (thank you, Snowe and Collins!!), and two are from Kansas (Brownback is retiring from the senate to run for governor and has told the anti-abortionists in the state that are angry with him that they had to know that ANY candidate Obama nominates for the position is going to be pro-choice.  Roberts... not sure if it is that he wants her out of the state so she doesn't run for Brownback's seat or if he actually appreciates her abilities...)

Btw - if any of you have some good Democrat prospects for governor and senator, would you mind sending Kansas way?

Still taking the Limbaugh vitamins, aren't you.  In case no one has told you, the virus was brought into this country by Catholic school children in Queens, NY who were vacationing in Mexico and contracted there.  Further, it has also been discovered that it originated in a pig processing plant owned by an AMERICAN corporation.

So do you want the border closed to keep Mexicans from coming here, or to keep us from going there?
