Obama's Day 100 at MO town hall

From NBC's Athena Jones

ARNOLD, Mo. -- President Obama marked the 100th day of his young presidency with an event here in the bluest of 2008's red states, taking stock of his accomplishments and the challenges ahead and fielding questions from a jam-packed high school gym.

Obama narrowly lost Missouri to John McCain -- by roughly 4,000 votes out of about three million cast -- making it the only true battleground he didn't win. He campaigned in the Show Me State just two days before Election Day, and today, he told the crowd of about 1,100 people here that he was glad to get out of Washington and come back to middle America "where common sense often reigns."

The president's own aides may be calling it a "Hallmark holiday," but that hasn't stopped them from trying to shape the narrative about this fledgling administration. Obama spent 22 minutes summarizing his first three-and-a-half months in office before opening it up to the floor.

"After 100 days, I'm pleased with the progress we've made, but I'm not satisfied," he said. "I'm confident in the future, but I'm not contenct with the present."

In remarks that were reminiscent of campaign stump speeches, his February address to a joint session of Congress and a recent event at Georgetown University, Obama told the audience that he had inherited a nation facing huge challenges that could not be dealt with through "half-measures."

He talked about new jobs that were being created in Missouri and elsewhere as a result of the stimulus package, tax cuts for the middle class, the law he signed to protect equal pay, expanding health coverage for children, the plan he introduced to help stabilize the housing and financial markets, his plans to end the war in Iraq and to implement a new strategy in Afghanistan and Pakistan and his belief in the importance of renewed diplomacy and direct engagement with friends and foes around the world.

He also reminded the audience, as he does in almost every major speech, that the road to recovery would be long and that there were still many people struggling unemployment and health-care costs.

"You know that our progress has to be measured in the results that we achieve over many months and years, not the minute-by-minute talk in the media," he said. "And you know that progress comes from hard choices and hard work, not miracles. I'm not a miracle worker."

Arguing that there was still much work to be done, Obama spoke about the need to pass new rules to regulate Wall Street this year and to improve schools, to institute a market-based cap on carbon polluton and restore fiscal discipline.

In a return to the kind of populist rhetoric that was a hallmark of his speeches on the trail last fall, Obama said his campaign had not been born in Washington but in places like this, among  hard-working families, and he told the crowd he spent every day in the White House working for them.

"I promise you, I will always tell you the truth about the challenges we face and the steps that we are taking to meet them," he said in closing. "I will continue to measure my progress by the progress that you see in your own lives."

The president then spent about 50 minutes taking six questions from the audience on the auto industry, education, how to fix social security and the environment. Ever on message, the president turned the conversation to health care at one point, without prodding, and reiterated his goal of passing health-care reform this year.

The crowd, made up of state and local officials, students and people who obtained their tickets through an Internet lottery, interrupted the president frequently with laughter and applause.

Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill and Gov. Jay Nixon joined Obama at the event, along with top advisers David Axelrod, Valerie Jarrett, Mona Sutphen and Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

Taking on critics, talking massages
In defending his efforts to tackle several areas at once by passing a massive stimulus package, Obama said he wanted to remind people who watch "certain news channels on which I'm not very popular" that his detractors were "playing games" when they sought to portray the $787 billion stimulus package as the source of the country's deficit problems.

He also sought to show his independence from his supporters by mentioning he had heard "some grumblings and complaints from certain factions in the Democratic Party" when he decided to send 17,000 additional troops to Afghanistan, but that this was necessary  to make sure Osama bin Laden and his "cronies" did not have a safe haven.

There was a funny moment during the Q and A when the president told one woman, a massage therapist, that he could use a rub down.

"My back's stiff," Obama said. "I've been working hard."

The crowd laughed when the woman responded: "I'll be happy to help ya."

Obama has made a point of getting out of what he calls the Washington echo chamber and speaking directly to people, often in swing states. It's a tactic he and his aides feel helps him use his popularity to win support for his initiatives.

But today's escape was short-lived. Obama headed back to Washington after the event, stiff back and all, where he'll likely face tougher questioning from reporters at his third prime-time press conference.

Obama, help get the Bankruptcy bill passed
Some of your fellow Democrats are trying to gut it by removing the 'cramdown' provisions from it

Get teh Senate to pass the House's version of the Bankruptcy bill !!

Let's also get Anti Trust and Comsumer Protection legislation passed

Priority # 1:

Get the Economy moving again !!

A great 100 Days

We need another Great 500 days !!

"Hallmark holiday," As a proud citizen of their corporate headquarters, I have NO problem with Hallmark Holidays - it stimulates the local economy.

PS.  Follow the Newsweek article on racism and you will see how President Obama lost Missouri.  Often spoken "Missourah" by the locals.  I'm a transplant, so I don't roll that way.

“…Hummer Died on Obama's Watch!!! …”  Success - NOT (Sent Wednesday, April 29, 2009 1:14 PM)

I don’t want to split proverbial hairs (boy there’s another joke right there); but I believe the hummer died on the Teabaggers watch.
I understand that Missouri's other senator, Kit Bond (R), was invited to attend but was too busy thinking of ways to take credit for everything he's about to oppose in the budget...you know, kinda like the stimulus package.
"After 100 days, I'm pleased with the progress we've made, but I'm not satisfied," he said. "I'm confident in the future, but I'm not contenct with the present."

Keep on pushing Mr> President, you're doing a wonderful job. Keep up the momentum. You can handel it. As I've said we bave become so complacient with past Presidents, slow motion moves, mingled with all politics, that we finally have a "real man" in the office that can actually "walk and chew gum at the same time". The President knows his limits! I say keep on pushing Mr. President.
WOW I am so impressed(insert sarcasm here). The press has such a love affair with the President that they are going to have withdrawls the moment he is no longer in office. As for his approval ratings if we slip by all the media polls which in no way are bias (more sarcasm) and check the Gallup poles. There are four Presidents that have had a higher rating than Obama. Regan, Clinton, Carter, and yes Bush. So why do we not hear about this on the news? You would think that there has been no other President as popular as Obama. His biggest accomplishment has been picking out a new dog. Unl;ess you consider a 1.5 Trillion dollar deficit an accomplishment. He is not a rock star people he is the President and should be judge on what he has done not on who he is.
And the accomplishments of The Obama are what again? GDP is contracting at a higher rate then expected. Unemployment will tick up to 10% for the entire country in another week or so. And all the talk of Obama being something new turns out to be nothing more than an old dose of Keynesian economics.

I'm having an excellent economic crisis!
Doing what he does best - campaigning.  Someone tell him the election is over.  Sure would like to know what jobs he created.
Obama: "when they sought to portray the $787 billion stimulus package as the source of the country's deficit problems."

The source of the problem is that Obama has his foot on the neck of companies both large and small that is preventing them from hiring people and providing goods and service, creating economic growth, and increasing tax revenue. In short - Obama is killing the very tax base that he's depending on to fund his massive social programs. Don't believe it? Look at the unemployment numbers. They've been going through the roof since Obama won back in November.
Yes, I do agree that Obama is a miracle worker.  I think "miracle worker" was a title of a book or something about Helen Keller and helping the blind.  And Obama's followers sure are blind!  They believe anything he says.  And when he screws up, they blindly defend him.
Obama is setting himself up for failure  ---- according the recent poll results. --- WHY?

"Beneath his superficial support, Obama’s specific policies run afoul of the very deeply felt convictions of American voters.

For example, the most recent Rasmussen Poll asked voters if they wanted an economic system of complete free enterprise or preferred more government involvement in managing the economy. By 77-19, they voted against a government role, up seven points from last month.

And in the Fox News poll — the very same survey that gave Obama a 62 percent approval rating and reported that 68 percent of voters are “satisfied” with his first hundred days — voters, by 50-38, supported a smaller government that offered fewer services over a larger government that provided more.

By 42-8, the Fox News poll (conducted on April 22-23) found that voters felt Obama had expanded government rather than contracted it and, by 46-30, reported believing that big government was more of a danger to the nation than big business. (By 50-23, they said Obama felt big business was more dangerous.)

By 62-20, they said government spending, under Obama, was “out of control.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OBAMA POLL NUMBERS ARE SLOWING SURROUNDING HIM IN NEGATIVES --- IF THE REAL REPUBLICANS KEEP UP THE PRESSURE ON OBAMA HE WILL FAIL.
In this afternoon's "Hope or Hype", the Obama Justice Department has fought to retain most of the Bush-era powers governing enemy combatants and surveillance. They've embraced the Bush-Cheney position that the State Secrets Privilege bars the courthouse door to litigants who claim they've been harmed by warrantless wiretapping.

Worse, according to constitutional lawyer Glenn Greenwald, the Obama DOJ has gone even further than the Bush team, arguing that "all claims of illegal government surveillance are immunized in the absence of 'willful disclosure' to the public of the intercepted communications."

So here is a case of loons believing both the Hope, and the Hype.

Believers in the 4th Amendment and civil liberties should be wary.
It is great that he is getting out to still talk to real people across the US. I'm sure the republicans will whine about this town hall like they do everything else he does, but keeping in touch with people like these will allow him to keep his finger on the country's pulse and also to provide unfiltered communication direct to the people. That allows them to make their own decisions on what he's doing right and what he is doing wrong.
What exactly has the "Stimulus Package" stimulated again? Has Obama even bought the shovels for the "shovel ready" projects yet?
I'm really happy you are OUR President.

Happy Anniversary President Obama, and many more good days are ahead for the American People!
Is GM going bankrupt one of Obama's accomplishments?
Athena's upbeat summary of Pres Obama's speech reminds us of how biased and compromised our media and reporters have become.  Maybe she'll be the next media person to accept a job with Obama's team.  Anyway, Pres Obama mentioned being in Missouri where "common sense often reigns".  Maybe he could comment on the lack of common sense that lead he and his party to sign a bill which allowed AIG to pay bonuses to execs?  Or why his administration needed to pay taxpayer money duing this economic crisis to fly a 747 and some fighter jets over New York to get some good photo-ops and freak out all the people there who remember too well 9/11?  Or why he hired several lobbyists on his team after promising to have "NONE".  Or why he, his team, and party have spent millions of $$ to go after conservative radio dudes (Limbaugh...) after Mr Obama had told us repeatedly that it's time for no more "petty politics"?  Or why his team meets daily to coordinate with lefty special interest groups after he lectured us often during the election season about the "dangers of special interest influence in Washington"?????  Or why a man who talked repeately about "new politics" and "more integrity" and about no longer having "two Americas" (the rich and the poor) and whose vice president told us "it's patriotic to pay taxes"...would then nominate and support to the hilt men and women who failed to pay their taxes???
Bush doubling the national debt was bad. Obama doing so again in half the time is much worse.
Obama will be fine as long as he continues to convince Americans to ignore the minor partisan battles and focus on the wider agenda for the future.

Hiram,
We all read the polls and they are overwhelmingly in favor of Obama and the Democrats and for the first time believe America is finally headed in the right direction. Please do yourself a big favor and put down that crack pipe. Your skewed right wing talking points don't fly. Please crawl back into your cave and give your wife aka sister a kiss.
Good citizens of California! Please pay your taxes because the illegals living there don't want to.

None of the four you cite even remotely had the horrendous climate of a crashing economy, two wars and a petulant, bratty minority party that refuses to even pretend to come to the table.  But you go ahead and cherry pick your data.  I am sure it comforts you at night.  The rest of us are hanging on to our hope and our vote and we aren't going to let you rain on our parade, as it were.

here's what's wrong with your post. Economics 101 teaches that unemployment rate is a lagging economic indicator, meaning, its one of the last things to go bad when the economy tanks, and its one of the last things to get better as the ecomony enters recovery...meaning, its a given that unemployment will continue to worsen as the economy begins to enter recovery...so to blame Obama for the current unemployment trend is antithesis to basic economic teachings.
Two - that GDP is contracting more than expected doesn't seem to bother wall street today as its currently up over 150 points. And since the stimulus  package is just beginning to put dollars into the economic stream, its somewhat premature to blame Obama for that.

I think you and the rest of your GOP ilk, need to realize that the more level headed american realizes that the economic problems are so big, and have been so long in the making, that any one who blames Obama for the current problems, or says what he's doing is not working, has no credibility and is just plain nonsense. Go home and put on Lush Limbo if it makes you feel better, but you are not living in reality.
BHO: "After 100 days, I'm pleased with the progress we've made,"

What progress? Stock market is still way down for the year. Unemployment is increasing. That the progress you talking about BO?

Oh, but you did get that dog! That can be counted as progress!

I absolutely agree. That is why I am so pleased with his performance to date:

1 - Signed authorization to close GITMO
2 - Instructed the CIA to abide by the laws of this country and not torture
3 - Stopped offshore drilling
4 - Opened up stem cell research
5 - Pushed and signed a sweeping stimulus bill
6 - Rescinded the Mexico City Policy
7 - Issued government transparency guidelines
8 - Froze WH pay
9 - Got agreement from Russia to allow us to ship supplies through Russia to Afghanistan
10 - Increased fuel efficiency standards
11 - Canceled oil and gas leases for drilling near national parks in Utah
12 - Implemented the homeowners assistance plan

That's just the first 12. I figured if you really wanted to know everything President Obama did, you would pull your head out of the sand and pay attention to the news.

here's what's wrong with your post. Economics 101 teaches that unemployment rate is a lagging economic indicator,

==============

Econ 102 teaches you that if people had jobs last month, and don't have a job now, then their spending will go way, way down. That means there will be less spending, less consumption, and less economic activity for the next 12-18 months. That my friend is a leading economic indicator.

Is it a crime for righties to actually GET FACTS before posting?

http://jawillie.blog.com
What has the President done.
- I would whine and complain. Mention the word socialism (even though our president refuses to nationalize the banks or support 90% taxes on executive bonus that even some so-called conservatives voted for).
- I'll mention communism (in spite of faith-based initiatives in the whitehouse, attending church several times including Easter and even one seder. Well then communist except for recognizing religion - shut up about how that cannot be communism, my radio guy says it is).
- I'll mention teleprompters. Because why the hell should our presidents not just stick to plain old paper notes. Forget the town halls and 11 press conferences.
- I will complain about the blackberry. What the heck is wrong with the good old red rotary 3:00am phone I see in ads?
- And why should the government stimulate spending when so many job losses and an unwillingness of already insolvent banks to extend credit to businesses is creating more job losses. leading to even more insolvency, leading to even more job losses,... That is a horrible idea even though all countries in China, Japan, France, England seem to think it is a good idea. Let people lose their jobs. That's just the natural economic cycle like in the 20s or Japan in the 80s.
- And what's with the taxes. I'd protest them on tax day even though not a single one has been raised. Oh sorry, I notice from my paycheck that taxes have even been cut. Maybe I wont protest taxes then - at aleast not yet. I also dont like the teabags party theme.
- And what's with the recession and the 401K down. Please no one should bother me with the fact that it's curve was downward since Dec 07 and it cant turn in a dime on Jan 21? And so what if it the markets are now up net up by 2%, 7%, and 18%.
- The deficit is going to be $49 trillion. That's what I believe. Dont tell me about how we had a budget surplus in 2000 that became effectively $1.3 trillion in January.
- I will even threaten to secede.
- Did I forget to mention the word Barry. And yes teleprompter. What's coloring my eyes I cant seem to find a SINGLE thing good anywhere in sight.
Here is something that needs to be addressed...why is it that when I am late on a JC Penny, Walmart etc.. credit card payment that I get a phone call from someone in India that barely speaks english - Who will get real ignorant with you given the chance - which one of your Presidents let that happen???
Can I ask you righties a question?  How can you claim you want the government out of your lives, yet hold the government responsible for everything bad that has happened to you personally, and expect that the government somehow owes you something.  If you believe the government has no place in your lives, then it should stand to reason that you should be able to pull yourselves out of your situation without government help, regardless of what the government does.  After all, only lazy shiftless people depend on the government, doesn't it.  You "real Americans" depend only on yourselves.  The government shouldn't be able to affect anything in your lives, because you don't depend on the government, do you?

Just sayin'

Chris in IL, you say that Obama "opened up stem cell research."  There already was stem cell research pre-Obama.  All he did was allow federal money to be spent on it.  That doesn't stimulate the economy.  It stimulates more spending of taxpayer money on something that was already being done.
You know how you know that you are a hater?

When it bothers you just because someone else is liked more than yourself.

When you have to scrape to find something to crticize, like whether or not a suit coat of flag pin is being worn.

When keep saying irrational things like: "Just because the President Obama is smart, likeable, and well spoken doesn't mean that I have to like him." or
"His approval rating is high now, but REAL AMERICANS who drink tea don't approve."

When you have to keep reminding yourself that President of the United States is not a muslim terrorist and/or the messiah.

When you claim to be an "economist", but you keep coming onto message boards blaming a 100 day old Presidency for things like the unemployment rate and GDP shrinkage. (Yes, I'm looking at you no joe.)

Lots of hateration going on when it comes to President Obama.

No. It is GM's accomplishment. They made crappy cars under incompetent management. Their bankruptcy is a chapter 11 petition which is their last chance to reorganize and save your overpaid job. An auto worker with a brain would hope for the success of that reorganization. You might also consider thanking Pres. Obama for putting his foot down and insisting that if GM takes taxpayer money they have fire the incompetent management who got them into that mess. That might save your job.
Boy, you haters (ie, the remaining admitted republicans) sound like you really miss old gw albatross - he couldn't even put together an unscripted complete sentence for gods sake!  He wasn't able to speak comprehensively on virtually any of the issues - then developed an attitude like a spoiled child when anyone questioned him. He sure was good at speaking out of both sides of his mouth though - you remember...."we do not torture".   Yeah, he was MUCH better than President Obama.

I'm thankful for my intelligent grown up president.  You haters...just get over it or it's going to be a long 4 - possibly 8 years or more.  Better yet, instead of just grousing, why don't you come up with better ideas?  Otherwise you're irrelevant.
