First 100 days: Last night’s newser

The AP’s lead on last night’s Obama news conference: ”President Barack Obama said Wednesday night that waterboarding authorized by former President George W. Bush was torture and that the information it gained from terror suspects could have been obtained by other means. ‘In some cases, it may be harder,’ he conceded at a White House news conference capping a whirlwind first 100 days in office.”

The Boston Globe: "Marking the end of a feverish first 100 days in office, President Obama last night laid out his agenda for the rest of the year, pledging to forge ahead on a healthcare overhaul, promote energy independence, and revive the banking and auto industries. In a wide-ranging White House news conference that covered the flu pandemic, Taliban encroachment in Pakistan, and congressional politics, Obama touted his early accomplishments but warned that two of his biggest challenges -- achieving healthcare and energy policy reform -- still await him."

The Wall Street Journal: “President Barack Obama said he wants to get the government out of the private sector as fast as possible -- but that as long as his administration is acting as a major shareholder for large sectors of American commerce, from cars to finance, he won't hesitate to shape decisions at those firms.”

The New York Times: “President Obama said Wednesday that he was “gravely concerned” about the stability of the Pakistani government but that he was confident Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal would not fall into the hands of Islamic militants. Speaking at a prime-time news conference on his 100th day in office, Mr. Obama called the government in Pakistan, where army forces are at war with Taliban insurgents who have been advancing on Islamabad, “very fragile.” Pakistan’s leader … is to visit Washington next week, and American officials have been pressing his government to be more aggressive in battling the insurgency.”

The Hill: "On the 100th night of his administration, President Obama defended the moves he has made so far on the release of torture memos and corporate bailouts, as he generally reflected on the whirlwind beginning of his term and posited that the traditional measuring mark was 'a good start.'"

Politico’s take on the newser: “Far from electric, this was a tranquilizing performance. So much so that it was impossible not to conclude that a president who certainly knows how to be exciting was making a calculated effort not to be.”

The second 100 days, the AP's Babington writes, are largely in Congress' hands.

And leading up to the upcoming White House Correspondents Dinner, there's a new blog chronicling the big event.

Yeah baby!!!
You lefties hate Fox but you sure like to explain away all of Obamas failures with Homer J. Simpsons standard excuse- "It was like that when I got here!"

Maybe you should have voted for Hillary, she was ready to lead on day one. Remember?
I was surprised by Chuck Todd's question about whether President Obama felt the US could secure Pakistan's nuclear arms. I can't imagine any President would answer that question. If you say no, you're saying we aren't prepared for a worst case scenario (thus tipping our hand to the taliban). If you say yes, you fan the flames with Pakistan and essentially admit we have a plan to take over their military.

All-in-all, I thought it was a reasonably good press conference and it sure is nice to have a President that comes out and takes questions and lets us know what is going on. I wonder how much better the economy might be right now had President Bush acted decisively and addressed the issues back in the fall.
As always Barack Obama shines when he gives a public talk.  He was so awesome at yesterday's town hall meeting answering people's questions, though I had to switch channels to cnn (fox lite) to see it.  Oh yesterday I incorrectly bashed David Gregory for stepping on the townhall meeting.  My bad, it was NBC's Brian Williams who stepped on the townhall meeting.  MSNBC tv made a big programming booboo scheduling Brian at the same time as Obama's townhall meeting and needs to be smarter about not stepping on Obama's townhall meetings when it's question and answer time or it will keep losing viewers to cnn (fox lite) who want to watch Obama.

Last night Obama was totally awesome giving his speech and then answering questions.  I liked the way he used the 4 part question to inject a little humor and then gave a truly excellent answer, especially about being "enchanted" by our military people.  Chuck Todd asked an excellent question as well.

In Obama We Trust!
It is now time to move forward with an important aganda, healthcare, EFCA, education, and energy. These items will allow the economy to rebound and grow. I say Mr. President put your agenda in and have the House and Senate vote on it. Make all votes Public, announce evryone's name and how they voted and then they can explain why they voted the way they did. The American public is behind the President and Congress will have to decide to be with him and for the people or be embarassed and voted out. This goes especially for Arlen Specter. He co-sponsored the EFCA bill and if he votes against it then all those blue-collar union workers in Pennsylnvania should send him packing.
Wow! This country is in a world of trouble...the Obama Team is at least trying to do something at will work for all Americans...if you disagree with their attempt, policy goals, fine.  But, please lets keep this discussion civil and productive.

Bashing one another is not the answer.
Count on Politico to neglect the substance in favor of the subjective style analysis. Why does anyone pay attention to this approach?
NT< OK is a prime example of where this blog is losing respect.  Why do you guys let this crap thru?  D Angers is certainly the worst, is anyone monitoring this right now.  Do these comments slip by at your coffee breaks?  Half the time I can't get on here, yet NT, and yes others get by?  Bet you don't post this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
President Obama offered a great illustration regarding the torture debate.

"Churchill said 'we don't torture' when the British people were being subjected to unimaginable risk and threat," he said.

"And the reason was Churchill understood if you start taking short cuts over time that what corrodes what's best in a people. It corrodes the character of a country."

I am so proud of our President.  He has faced everything that has been thrown at him in his first 100 days and has forged ahead with determination and perseverance.  Is this not the quintessential American spirit?

I remarked to my husband how telling it would be to run one of President Bush's press conferences behind President Obama's.  It would be a great reminder of who was looking out for us for the past eight years, and who is looking out for us now...a man who chose shortcuts that we have lived to regret vs. a man who is a thoughtful, pragmatic and methodical "decider."

I, for one, feel a great sense of gratitude and relief.

Obama said when elected he'd hit the ground running on day #1. But we had to wait until day #100 for Obama's cabinet to finally be completed.

For how much I dislike Hillary in particular and the Clintons in general, she would have been a much better president then Obama. At least Hillary loves her country.
Personally, I didn't care for the way he ducked and weaved his way around the question of Torture.  Rather than give a straight Yes or No answer to the question of whether the prior administration sanctioned it, he left it dangling out there (like a teabag - sorry, it was there).  I understand that he wants to avoid stepping on Holder's toes, but this was not his best moment.

Also, watching Chris Matthews being interviewed by Keith O. after, do you get the feeling that Chris is just a tiny bit jealous of Specter that he didn't run for the Dem PA Senate seat when he had the chance?  Or was it just me?

The news conference allowed the President to demonstrate once again why he is enjoying such high approval ratings.

That he is very intelligent is indisputable but he continues to show other positive attributes:humility, grace, compassion for others, sense of humor, and last but not least "high energy".

The President knows that the American people are not stupid so he does not have to continously beat the drum about "torture" and whether what the prior administration did was criminal or not. We know it was and we appreciate the approach that is being taken for the sake of the country. History will tell the complete story whether anyone goes to jail or not.

Thank God we have someone in the WH who can juggle mutliple tasks simultaneously because President Obama has a lot of work to do and a short time to make a difference between "hope" and reality. The TO DO List looks something like this:

Iraq War
Afghanistan War
Pakistan Threatened by Taliban
North Korea building nukes; ditto Iran
Pirates trolling the Gulf of Aden
Auto Industry Meltdown
Financial Institutions Meltdown
Swine Flu
Torture Gate

That is just the heavy stuff. There must be an equally long list of petty things on that List.

However, the President convinced me last night that he is up to the task.

It appears republicans are unwilling to get involved in the process of moving this country forward, banking on grinding this adminstration (America as a result)to fail, so they can say I told you so. How sad that they would sit on the sidelines and not try to solve our most pressing issues that the majority of Americans would like to see put behind us now, not 30 years from now. Would'nt it be interesting if our president called republican senators into the White House and challenged each one of them (publicly) to pick up one policy each (exp. Boener- Health Care, Cornyn- education, etc.) and to work with the democratic party to solve the issue. Demanding that no is not an option without publicly calling them out as refusing to solve America's problems. Demanding they do their jobs. Failing to solve it is not an option. It appears the only issue our congressional leaders seem to be able to put behind them and unfortunately seem to agree on is their pay raises. Hell, they can accomplish that in just one day!It seems everything else that is most pressing to American citizens take 30+ years or so. Enough is enough!
It was refreshing to watch a president who was relaxed and tried to answer the questions with honesty and clarity. The torture question was something that will be not be easy to deal with and I can understand his careful response, Bush has created a swamp that we must get out of while also understanding that everything cannot be dealt with easily.
Solving credit card problems is simple.

If it will take more than 7 years to pay off your credit card - dont pay it off.
Stop making any payments, cut up the card and wait 7 years for it to fall off your credit rating.  If they call harrassing you, send them a letter telling them to stop contacting you.  They have to - its the law.

After 7 years, it will fall off your credit file and the statute of limitations will have expired - you owe nothing!

The funny part is, after not paying them for 7 years and after it falls off your credit file - the same bank will give you a new card and start all over again - because your record is now clean!

Dont worry about the bank losing the money - Obama will make it up to them.

So America - if you owe more on your credit cards than you can pay off in 7 years - stop paying and using the card!

If you only make the minimum payment on a credit card with 20%+ interest - it will take you up to 16 years to pay it off.  It only takes 7 years to not pay anything.

I call this the pay-back plan for the credit card companies that are soaking americans with extreme interest rates - trying to make up for their mortgage loan mistakes.

I dont make the rules - but we all play the game!!!
It appears republicans are unwilling to get involved in the process of moving this country forward,

- American Joe

Explain where the country is moving forward.
Republicans might as well go home and watch everything happening on their TVs like the rest of us.  Because, thier opinion like the rest of us, dosen;t matter!

The Dems are running everything - lets hope for the best!  If not, we can blame them for everything.  The days of blaming Bush are over - the Dems run everything (including the banks, auto companies, etc...)

God help us!
