First thoughts: Another busy day

From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
*** Another busy day: There’s so much news today on this busy Thursday. The World Health Organization raised its alert level again, as Fort Worth, TX closed its school system over concerns about the swine flu. The Obama administration is planning to send Chrysler into bankruptcy (and we've just learned that Obama has added a noon speech to his schedule). In the wake of Arlen Specter’s defection, Republican lawmakers and officials (including Jeb Bush and John McCain) will today unveil what they’re calling the National Council for a New America, which will organize forums for policy debates. The National Republican Senatorial Committee is running robo-calls in Pennsylvania, reminding Democrats there that Arlen Specter backed Bush and won’t be an automatic 60th vote in the Senate. And Capt. Richard Phillips, who was rescued from Somali pirates, testifies on Capitol Hill. But we begin with last night’s news conference, where President Obama assured the American public that the government was doing everything it can to keep the swine flu from spreading; said the waterboarding the Bush administration practiced was torture (but avoided the "c" word -- "criminal"); stated he was confident that Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal wouldn’t fall into the Taliban’s hands; and -- courtesy of a fun question from the New York Times’ Jeff Zeleny -- reflected on what about the presidency has most surprised him, troubled him, enchanted him, and humbled him.

Video: In a press conference marking his first 100 days in office, President Barack Obama says there is still a lot of work to do but that the administration will be "unrelenting" in solving the nation's problems.

*** Ducking abortion and immigration: Yet perhaps the most striking thing to us about last night’s press conference was how cleverly Obama ducked the thorny social issues of abortion and immigration. On abortion, he said that passing the Freedom of Choice Act is not his “highest legislative priority.” Also, he used language that pro-lifers rarely hear from a pro-choice Democrat: “pro-life” and “moral.” And in response to a question about whether Obama would accomplish immigration reform in his first year as president, he answered, “What I hope to happen is that we're able to convene a working group, working with key legislators like Luis Gutierrez and Nydia Velazquez and others to start looking at a framework of how this legislation might be shaped.” Translation: It’s not happening this year. What this all means is that there won’t be tough votes for folks like Heath Shuler or Ben Nelson on Blanche Lincoln on these issues. Unlike what Bill Clinton did to congressional Democrats in 1993, Obama seems determined to not force members of his party to cast tough culture-war votes. The president's political team believes he can keep the congressional Dems on his side if he keeps the tough votes to the economy.

*** Obama, political scientist: For those who opined back in 2005 that the Republican Party was on the verge of a permanent majority, and for those who in 2009 think the same may be true for the Democrats (especially after the Specter news), Obama last night gave some very good advice. “You know, politics in America changes very quick. And I'm a big believer that things are never as good as they seem and never as bad as they seem. You're talking to a guy who was 30 points down in the polls during a primary in Iowa. So I never, I don't believe in crystal balls.”

*** Snakes -- er, swine -- on a plane: While the always-careful Obama made little news last night, the same isn’t true of his vice president… On TODAY, Biden said he’d advised his family to stay off airlines, even subways, because of the swine flu. "I would tell members of my family, 'I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places right now’. It's not just going to Mexico... It's being in a confined aircraft, where one person sneezes and it goes all the way through the aircraft.” An administration official followed up with this background guidance: Biden “was a bit imprecise in simply saying that people are at increased risk for catching the flu if they use mass transportation. As the President said just last night, every American should take the same steps you would take to prevent any other flu: Keep your hands washed; cover your mouth when you cough; stay home from work if you're sick; and keep your children home from school if they're sick.”

Video: TODAY’s Matt Lauer talks to Vice President Joe Biden about what the government is doing to stop the spread of the swine flu and President Obama’s prime-time news conference.

*** About those three to four million jobs…: We're a tad confused: So all of the pre-stimulus projections made by the president's economic team -- in particular GDP and the unemployment rate -- have all been DRAMATICALLY wrong and yet this morning Biden and again yesterday Christina Romer continued to claim that their job creation projection number (three to four million new jobs) is correct. Just asking: How can all of the actual numbers vs. the projections be so off, but this jobs number be right? And we'll also ask again: How can we actually fact-check a "saved job"? It's a phrase that might have seemed brilliant when the White House came up with it, but is it such a moving target. Will folks buy it when in a year the administration inevitably claims it saved millions of jobs when you can't really account for the number in any statistical way?

*** Targeting Specter: Speaking of Specter, the NRSC yesterday announced that it has launched robo-calls in Pennsylvania to remind Democrats there that Specter wasn’t always a Democrat. The call contains this line from George W. Bush: “I’m here to say it as plainly as I can: Arlen Specter is the right man for the United States Senate. I can count on this man -- see that's important. He’s a firm ally when it matters most. I’m proud to tell you I think he’s earned another term as the United States senator.” Also in today’s GOP news, the AP reports that Republican lawmakers and officials will today unveil the National Council for a New America -- “a series of town hall-style meetings about their ideas for shaping the country. With the backing of the House and Senate GOP leaders, the new group will operate independent from the Republican National Committee and highlight conservative ideas and seek to draw contrasts with President Barack Obama.” Anything that gets the GOP talking policy is probably a healthy step. Right now, though, the GOP these days appears as if it’s still debating what the basic principles of the party are.

*** Purists vs. big tenters: As we mentioned yesterday, and as the New York Times’ Nagourney front-pages today, there’s a divide in the Republican Party over Specter’s defection. Some believe that the party returning to its conservative roots and discarding the RINOs (Republicans In Name Only) is the best path back to power. Others argue that the GOP needs a bigger tent to get to 218 seats in the House, 51 seats in the Senate, and 50%-plus one in the 2012 presidential race. The good news for us is that we’ll likely find an early test to this debate next year with Pat Toomey’s candidacy. If the conservative Toomey wins statewide in Pennsylvania -- which Obama won by 10 percentage points last November -- then the Purists will have a VERY strong argument to make. But if Toomey loses, then the Big Tenters will be able to say, “I told you so.” Also, don’t miss Ohio Sen. George Voinvoich’s comment in Politico about the conservative Club for Growth: “I think it’s a big problem.” Note that Republicans are not just losing a moderate/liberal to the Dems, but they’re also losing Voinovich, Martinez, Bond and Gregg -- all non-purists -- to retirement. Lindsey Graham is even more blunt in the New York Times, and he comes from one of the most conservative states in the country “Do you really believe that we lost 18-to-34-year-olds by 19 percent, or we lost Hispanic voters, because we are not conservative enough? No. This is a ridiculous line of thought. The truth is we lost young people because our Republican brand is tainted.”

*** Steele in the news: The latest in the news about RNC chairman Michael Steele: “The embattled Republican National Committee chairman angrily returned fire in his fight with current and former officers over control of the GOP's purse strings,” the Washington Times reports. “Under attack from conservatives since taking office on Jan. 30, Michael S. Steele on Wednesday blasted a group of members pushing for new checks and balances on the chairman's spending powers, accusing them of a power grab ‘scheme.’ Speaking of Steele, we offer another stray thought about his very hot statement on Arlen Specter's defection. (“He left to further his personal political interests because he knew that he was going to lose a Republican primary due to his left-wing voting record.”) But wasn't it a bit ironic for Steele to say this, given 1) that he's a Republican from blue Maryland, and 2) that one of his central themes when campaigning for RNC chair was trying to expand the GOP's map in the Northeast? After all, in 2006, it was Steele himself who complained that being a Republican in blue Maryland was a scarlet letter. Just wonderin’, but if Steele had won his Senate race in ’06, would he have voted for Obama’s stimulus?

Budget:

Yesterday I ended my comments with, “Keep an eye on those blue dogs.” Thanks to FR reporting the budget was passed 53-43, with blue dogs; Bayh, Byrd, and Ben Nelson voting against the budget.  It is likely that Axelrod, et.al. have already figured out how to deal with the feckless dogs.

Three thoughts about the budget:

1) The budget always originates in the House. (Even though it is the President’s budget.)
2) It goes through the legislative process like any bill, but…
3) It is not a law.  A budget is a roadmap, a guide, to overspend or under spend is not breaking the law.  It is not a document that is signed by the President.

Torture:

President did publically state that waterboarding is torture. No question about it.  He also called it a mistake, yet he is a brilliant man and knows that it is against the law.  What is he doing? I think he is casting this problem off for a future day.  When he commented that he was surprised at the number of serious problems that had not been addressed, it was clear to me that he has enough on his plate.  The Senate can hold hearings and that has the effect of keeping the issue alive, and buying time.  Torture is an issue that will be with us for 3 or 4 years.

Bipartisanship;

President Obama has taken notice of the zero votes from the GOP.  He is telling the republicans, if you stick to your old, stale, ideas and vote no…you will be left behind.  If you have a good idea it may be included.  “Just voting “NO” is not a winning approach.  Clearly the GOP has no idea how to neutralize this President.  If they wait for him to make a mistake, that could be a long wait. The GOP will be kept off balance so they cannot make a comeback. The torture issue, and the Dems  continuing to push progressive legislation is all it takes to keep the GOP on their heels.

Eagle 1776: A very well written chronology of Presidential history.  Accurate, to the point, unbiased, I liked it.

Nice going Obama. Pakistan is one of our allies on fighting terror, but you sound a lot like the ugly American with your arrogance when you said Pakistans government is useless, but the US will be there to help them.
Ron, Indiana - Torture is an issue that will be with us for 3 or 4 years.

Which coincides nicely with when Obama will leave office.

“You know, politics in America changes very quick. And I'm a big believer that things are never as good as they seem and never as bad as they seem. You're talking to a guy who was 30 points down in the polls during a primary in Iowa. So I never, I don't believe in crystal balls.” to which my husband responded, "but he believes in having brass balls, when going to battle".  For some reason that struck me as quite funny.  The other jewel my husband appreciated was when President Obama made the comment, "I was reading an article the other day..." and hubby piped up, "There's something I haven't heard in eight years from a president."  Yes, hubby was in rare form.  love that guy!

Evan Bayh is up for re-election in 2010.  He will continue to vote centrist right because he is very concerned about re-election.  At least that's my take on it.
"Also in today’s GOP news, the AP reports that Republican lawmakers and officials will today unveil the National Council for a New America -- a series of town hall-style meetings about their ideas for shaping the country."

Those should be pretty quiet meetings...last I checked, the GOP had no ideas.
Notice Obama won't cross the bridge to say that what Bush did to get information from the terrorists saved American lives. Obama has read the memos that state that fact, and he knows it's very true that thousands of Americans were saved by Bush and Cheney. And is exactly the reason Obama won't release those memos.

I agree.  Would have been interesting to see a reporter ask Obama his stance on gay marriage.  Since he was against it at Rick Warren's forum last summer, how would he answer it now and still keep the lefties happy?
The Evil Elephant Party is having a mid-life crisis trying to decide how limited their membership will be.  Doesn't their "Purity" argument sound a whole lot like Adolph Hitler's "Purity" nonsense?  You Betcha!  They should just relabel their party the "FRU" for Facists 'R Us!  I guess with Specter we're seeing their final solution starting up.

Just have to love the internal bickering of the FRU, Facists 'R Us as their idiot steele melts under the heat of the national spotlight.  Hey how's that closet Democrat working out for you?  Got to love how they want to cut his pruse strings and if that happens he's just a token black figurehead who shows all minorities that they are not welcome in the little tent Purist party.

Man what kind of an idiot is Bachmann Moron Overdrive?  The other day she screws up saying that the swine flu came about in the 70's under Carter when it started under Ford.  Then she screws up the Smoot-Halley Act of 1930 which was passed under Hoover, but she lied that it was passed under FDR.  Then she claims it screwed things up for 10 years when it was killed under FDR in 1934.  Ofcourse she never mentioned that both Smoot and Halley were stinking repugnant ones and to top it off she mispronounced it "Hoot-Smalley".  As always this wicked witch of Minnesota belongs in a mental institution along with Virginia Foxx, oh never mind they already are in a mental institutiuon - the republic party.

Impeach Bachmann!
Impeach Foxx!

No, I think the issue is that you're not used to a President who can answer questions coherently in English.
No questions to The Obama about the economy? You know the economy that shrank at 6% rate, which translates to a trillion dollars lost in 3 months? You know, the economy that produced another 630,000 unemployed people in the last month, for a grand total of 3.6 million jobs lost on Obama's watch. You know, the economy that drove Chrysler into bankrupcy with GM close to follow. Not one question about any of that?

Looks like our elite pres corp needs a lesson on what is important in the country.
"And we'll also ask again: How can we actually fact-check a "saved job"? the same way many in the msm elite have not questioned torture "made us safer."
Since Ohio Sen. George Voinvoich has announced his retirement, he is at little risk to call it like he sees it.  Most of the other R's are too busy playing Ostrich.  To the rest of America it looks more like they are playing Chicken Little.

Probably would have danced around it (Sent Thursday, April 30, 2009 9:42 AM)

It would be interesting to watch Perez Hilton call Obama a dumb b**** on his web site.
On the economy: There have been saved jobs. Are they hard to see? Yes. Will this recovery be soon? No. I think the President has told the American people that this problem is deep and will take time to improve. NPR radio yesterday had a some economists who did not say that everything is all roses, but they did point out areas where there seem to be improvement. They also indicated that unfortunately, job creation is usually the last to recover. So all in all I think everyone, including the media, needs to be patient. President Obama has an understanding of the issues, obviously reads constantly, and is able to change course if necessary.

On torture: I have to say that I hate the fact that the Bush administration tortured. But I am also getting weary of those on the left who seem to be unwilling to settle for anything less than persecution - and persecution right now! I am a leftie, and would love to see those involved held responsible, but I totally understand President Obama's case. First of all, it is the job of the Justice Department to deal with a crime such as this. Secondly, come on people, this country has huge problems, that at the moment, are more important than salivating over Dick Cheney in court. Let President Obama work on our problems and let Eric Holder worry about torture. Honestly, it is becoming torture watching Keith and Rachel. They have made their point. Now stop replaying it over and over and over.
April Hess - if you would read what the FBI and the military generals have said - torture does NOT work; they got most of the useful information BEFORE torturing.  As someone else mentioned, if we kill all drunk drivers, the death rate due to car accidents in the U.S. would be dramatically reduced - but that doesn't make it the right thing to do.
Of course Obama skirted the illegal immigrant issue.  He knows how inept Napolitano is and what an embarrasment to the administration she is.  He can't count on her for anything.
Jon Stewart made a really funny segment about Mistakes on a Plane about the NY flyover gaffe.  It's obvious Louis Caldera acted alone because if Obama's team saw this first they would have made sure to make it a good PR moment by publicizing the flyover to the public.

Let's see there this repugnant ones saying that he won't support Obama until pigs fly.  I'd much rather he never support Obama because could you imagine the problems if swine flew?  Don't look up and certainly don't do it with your mouth open!  I'm just glad he didn't say that he wouldn't support Obama until elephants flew, man now that would be dangerous if elephants flew and dropped their loads on us unsuspecting humans.

Didn't that Great Liberal Ben Franklin tell us that a penny saved is a penny earned, so yes saving jobs is just the same as creating them in our current job market where we're losing jobs like crazy.  So Biden was correct in saying that the stimulus bill will "save or create" 3 to 4 million jobs.  Remember this is like a timed release pill in that the stimulus money is timed to go out over time, thus ensuring our recovery has staying power.  Remember last year when the bushwhacker tried to save McNasty's bacon by bribing the voters with that sham tax rebate?  Yeah it went out real fast and only helped the economy for about two months and then fizzled out completely because it went to the wrong people and went out too fast.  A perfect expmple of haste makes waste!

In Biden We Trust!

John McCain?  Really?  But what about Rush's "some say" warning that Spector should take both John and Meghan McCain with him, as he leaves the GOP?  Blatant defiance of the Great Gasbag?  I hope it lasts...

Although I must agree with Pete in Albany- we have yet to see any new ideas from this bunch.  I'm pretty sure there aren't a lot of different ways to say "corporate tax-cuts".

It is like playing chess April, the President knows that the country is extemely divided, because of the two individuals that you cite, so he knows that investigating them now would be bad.  For war criminals the statute of limitations is almost endless so it can be set for another day and time.  Torture can not be justified to satisfy the means PERIOD!  The pilars of this country are based on upon humanely treating people, once we stoop to their level, then we have become no greater of people than they are.  Defending the Constitution of the US and the country are one in the same you guard against foreign and domestic enemies.  Things do happen in war time, no doubt about that, we also are governed by domestic and international laws to which you have a moral obligation to uphold.  Once you cross the line into torture, you have become a criminal, no difference between a law enforcement officer treating a suspect during apprehension or incarceration.  This is what sets us apart from those who treat people inhumanely.  This is why we are called the United States of America the land of the free were people are free to choose!
"Notice Obama won't cross the bridge to say that what Bush did to get information from the terrorists saved American lives. Obama has read the memos that state that fact, and he knows it's very true that thousands of Americans were saved by Bush and Cheney." - April Hess, Ohio

April, how do you know that "fact?"  Have you read the memos?
Just a thought…..
I am very tired of the “I would do whatever it takes to protect my children” defense of torture. I would do anything within my power (as would most of us) to keep my children safe in any real and imminent situation but to extend this “whatever it takes” reasoning to possible or perceived threats is ludicrous (we should turn their cities into smoking sheets of glowing glass <paraphrased from another post>). This kind of reasoning should never be an excuse to ignore or twist the rules.

So, PLEASE stop your pious “protect my children” argument. It is dishonorable of you and a disservice to our children. Although we all hope it never happens, our children may someday have need of the “rights” you so glibly throw away.
Have you noticed that Republicans consistently misstate facts?

If you wanted to, it's hard to take those guys seriously.

Also I would rather hear any truth than a bald-faced lie—so Specter told the truth about his motives and that's OK with me.

See the Democrats are already rubbing off on him!

President Obama is sincere and very engaged in doing the right thing. He may not always be successful but he tries hard and really cares. We have not had that kind support for a long time and we will not get it from Republicans.

Clara Kansas City, Mo:  You are right on the money. Evan Bayh is banking that being a blue dog in Indiana is his ticket for another 8 years.  He may be right as I see no credible democrat who will run against him. Indiana has a popular republican governor, but I don't think he wants to challenge Bayh. So Indiana may be stuck.  The Senior Indiana Senator Lugar (R) is more likely to support Obama than Bayh.  There is little doubt that President Obama has figured out the politics in Indiana

So sad how the party of immature children is now robo-calling people whining about Specter's smart decision to move on from the sore loser party.  Just another desperate attempt by a desperate party to try to fool the voters with their lies.  Just say no to the dopes of nope.

Is this like the Democrats telling us that the economy is getting better?
News-user.....you're absolutely correct! The press 'softballs' Obama, and spits venom at anyone who opposes him.

I wonder how many people will lose their jobs at Chrysler when Obama pushes them into bankruptcy?

Isn't it odd that this swine flu think comes along in the middle of an economic crisis? I mean, think of how lucky you are if you stay healthy and don't get sick.....even if Obama can't fix the economy and you do go broke! (?)

Obama is setting himself up for a public spanking, with all this talk of condemning 'torture', IF this country experiences another catastrophic terrorist event, or if U.S. citizens are killed overseas.
He's made his point and he should quiet down about it now. Further talk of this nature could hurt him seriously in 2012.

A little food-for-thought here.....The Pakistani's are nothing but a bunch of extremeist arse'-holes. They are shielding Bin Laden, Al-Zawahiri, and Mullah Omar from capture by the U.S.

Question.....Does the Democratic Party REALLY want someone who not ony believes, but himself conjured-up the 'magic-bullet' theory?

".....*** About those three to four million jobs…: We're a tad confused: So all of the pre-stimulus projections made by the president's economic team -- in particular GDP and the unemployment rate -- have all been DRAMATICALLY wrong and yet this morning Biden and again yesterday Christina Romer continued to claim that their job creation projection number (three to four million new jobs) is correct. ....." FIRST READ
(They're wrong about A LOT of other "stuff" too! But the mainstream-media, FIRST READ included, never 'prints' it. As I said yesterday; let's see where we are in 2012)

Here's a hint for the G.O.P.; Ditch the Bush-era "Neo-Conservative" approach. Go back to being the party of limited spending, lower taxes, and more judicious use of the military.....and you'll get your "mojo" back. Until then, you will always play second fiddle ton the Democrats.

It's funny how one black man (Barrack Obama) can have ties to domestic terrorists, ties to racist-cult-religious leaders, and a friendship with a federally convicted political racketeer...yet, his "image" is protected in the media.
However, a different black man (Michael Steele, who has NO such contacts) is portrayed as being “The embattled Republican National Committee chairman....."
Interesting, aint it?

Well.....that's all for today folks. Chew on THAT for a while you obaMANIACS.

...oh, and one more thing; STOP ALL THE TALKING, AND FIX THE ECONOMY MR. OBAMA.

Another thought re: torture.  If in following the law, it is determined that convictions at the highest levels are warranted, who's to say that leading the offenders away in shackles is a proper punishment?

Make the punishment fit the crime:  All earnings from current and future book deals to be donated to Amnesty International and victims of torture.  All offenders work off their sentences in service to victims of torture.  How appropriate would it be for Dick Cheney to have to spend his twilight years advocating for victims' rights?

Then he and the other high-level perps would know what it feels like to be put in an humbling position.
Obama is just so wonderful. He really cares!! We are so lucky to have him!!

I see "OBAMA-LACKEY" Montanero is 'admining' today. That means my earlier post won't make it to the board. Don't say anything critical of Obama if you want your remarks posted when THIS OBAMAniac is on duty!
I will cut him some slack, he has spoken more off the cuff words then in "W's" entire eight years.  So,...I can forgive some speech issues.

Bush rarely used a teleprompter. Obama uses one when he talks to his kids at the dinner table. Not much "off the cuff" talking goes on in the Obama household. So you can forgive Obama all you want, the man is a total buffoon off teleprompter.
Chandler W - [On the economy: There have been saved jobs. Are they hard to see? Yes.]

Norman Martinez, Yes - things that don't exist are hard to see.
------------------------------

I don't know how a good estimate for the total could be calculated, but there most certainly WERE jobs saved in towns where they were going to start laying off teachers and police but didn't after they were promised some of the stimulus money. These cases were specifically announced by the Obama administraion.

And in the end...Hillary STILL lost.
The contestants in the Miss USA pageant get tougher questions then Obama gets.

I agree.  Would have been interesting to see a reporter ask Obama his stance on gay marriage.  Since he was against it at Rick Warren's forum last summer, how would he answer it now and still keep the lefties happy?
Probably would have danced around it

If Obama read the Iowa Supreme Court decision he would say the Court decision was correct under the Iowa Constitution (which is almost identical to the US), and he'd point out that the court was clear that this dealt only with civil marriage, and has absolutely no effect on religious marriage. Obama supports civil unions, and in essence the Iowa decision was a civil union decision. The court was clear that the decision only dealt with civil marriage, and that no religion has to recognize civil marriages that run counter to their beliefs, and no religion has to perform religious marriages of anyone they chose not to.
Taylor Maide Sam Nell, Dallas:

BE HONEST. Did either of you know what a teleprompter was before it became a lame Republican talking point?
Taylor Maide: When Obama gets in the deep stuff, he just blames his teleprompter for going too fast.
---------------------------------------

If you think President Obama can give substantive and coherent answers to questions he doesn't know are coming in advance, then you must believe in Magic Teleprompters that can foresee the future. If you like, I'll sell you one cheap. I've also got a bridge in New York you might be interested in buying.
Wasn't President Obama's confidence on approach to the Swine Flu refreshing last night?  He acknowledged the problem and presented a thoughtful approach to dealing with it.  No over-confidence.  No 'Good Job Brownie'.  No ignore the problem until the city is underwater.

And to his detractors on the issue of torture.  He has clearly stated those following orders will not be prosecuted.  He also clearly stated waterboarding is torture and torture is wrong.  Finally, he has repeatedly made it clear it is not his decision going forward - it is the role and responsibility of the Attorney General.  Imagine, a President who not only understands but follows the Constitution.
Dear Dan Rather: I said yesterday that the economy shrunk 6.1%, but, in the last quarters last year, it shrunk 6.3 and over.  Does that mean its expanding?
