GOP watch: Arlington, here we come!

“Reeling congressional Republicans launched a new policy effort days after their latest setback - the sudden defection of Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania to the Democrats,” the Boston Globe writes. “House GOP Whip Eric Cantor announced yesterday that the National Council for a New America will hold its first event tomorrow in suburban Washington, D.C. Expected to attend are: Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who ran for president last year and could run again in 2012; Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, another possible 2012 contender; Jeb Bush, the former president's brother and former governor of Florida; and Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi, a former national GOP chairman.”

The Washington Post: “GOP officials have complained that their alternative proposals to bills pushed through by the Democratic Congress have not received enough attention from the media and thus have been ignored by most Americans. They hope that using high-profile figures such as Bush will ensure that voters learn more about Republicans' ideas.”

Politico's Smith on the new National Council for a New America: It "launched with an open letter that’s notable for what it leaves out: The issues that a large segment of the party’s base are most passionate about. The letter, signed by 14 congressional Republican leaders, makes no mention of same-sex marriage, immigration -- legal or otherwise -- or abortion."

Peggy Noonan asks: What should the GOP do? “If it is alive, and it is, it will evolve, as living things do. Beyond that, a thought. A great party needs give. It must be expansive and summoning. It needs to say, ‘Join me.’… Great parties are coalitions, and coalitions contain disparate and sometimes warring pieces. FDR's coalition contained Southern Democrats from Birmingham and socialists from the Bronx. They didn't agree on much, but they agreed on some essentials, such as "the New Deal is good" and "government should be harnessed to help the little guy." It was imperfect and in time evolved but its success demonstrated that a great party needs give.”

"The Republican National Committee is riven by a dispute between Chairman Michael Steele and a faction of RNC establishment veterans that threatens to undermine Steele’s ability to put his stamp on the national party," Politico writes of the ongoing story first reported by the Washington Times. "The latest flashpoint is an acrimonious, increasingly public fight over control of the GOP’s finances that pits Steele’s team of consultants and younger RNC members against a contingent of longtime committee members who opposed his election and remain distrustful of his leadership."

Newt to the rescue: "Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) defended Michael Steele on Thursday against GOP critics, explaining that the Republican National Committee chairman has yet to learn the 'art of massaging the egos' at the RNC. 'Steele is a huge shock because he is different,” Gingrich said during an interview on C-SPAN’s 'Washington Journal.' 'He is not just different because he is an African-American; he’s different because he is a free spirit,' Gingrich said. 'He’s used to saying what he thinks. He’s controversial. He has enormous energy and great self-confidence.”'"

Here comes Eric from Salinas spewing hatred and childish name calling in 3,2,1…
Who cares about this new NCNA sham?  Hopefully the media will just say no to this new group of old freaks.

Isn't it hypocritical that eric can'tor who was whining about high speed rail from LA to Las Vegas now wants his own high speed rail line from Washington DC to his home district?  Can'tor is just another flip flopping repugnant one!

So funny how the repugnant ones are in such disarray, now neuter gingrich has to defend bonehead steele.  Actually neuter steelie is just another moron conservative lunatic fringer.
I think it's time for the Generally Obsolete and Pathetic party to simply go away and let a new party take its place.  As long as they stick around spewing the same old garbage, they're only assuring total Democratic rule.  IMO that's just as bad as total Republican rule.  They're surely digging themselves out of existence and can no longer contribute anything useful to the political conversation as they are now.  If they truly believe in "Country First", they'll step aside and let the country move on without them.  Another party of more moderate conservatives, free of the vitrol and bigotry and religious dogma, will certainly rise up and take it's place.  And the country will be able to make its choices from among the best and the brightest in their party, not the most ignorant.

Peggy Noonan says "A great party needs give. It must be expansive and summoning. Great parties are coalitions........" The big problem with that statement is the GOP has refused to compromise, pander to radical right wing religious our way or else crowd, use wedge issues to divide Americans along class, race and/or sexual orientation. Demography does not bode well for them and I truly believe that presently Democrats are more united than they have BEEN IN A LONG TIME. The GOP seems to be the ones fighting amongst themselves w/ their ONLY agreement to say no to Obama. It pretty cynical, selfish, mean-spirited and arrogant to want POTUS TO FAIL ONLY TO SAY WE TOLD YOU SO.
How funny is this. The republican party thinks by using Jeb Bush they will have a High profile name to go with there Out dated ideas. So they are putting lip stick on a pig, and hopes we will look at there ideas.Jeb Bush high profile, really, just the name alone will turn 80 % of the country off,and the rest are Bush lemmings. So who are they hoping to reach, well with a all-star line up of far right wing players. My guess is that if you have the same team on the field, expect the same results.
"Bush will ensure that voters learn more about Republicans' ideas.”

I have news for you Mr. Bush, the people are well aware of Republicans' ideas and that is why we voted overwhelmingly for the Democrats. Move to the center or perish.
Most of you are missing the point. Let them gather and speak, believe me as long as the same people say the same things the better for all of us.If you do not change your message it does not matter how you say it. Remember if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and sounds like a duck...it is a duck.
And this message is for the Democrats out there. Do NOT sit on your laurels and think the GOP is not going to regroup. They will return, and stronger than ever.  We need to form our own coalition, even though we now have the W.H. and Congress, good things in life come in cylces....they don't last long.  So...to my Democratic friends out there, stop fighting the last Administration on Torture, and let's move forward on things like jobs, energy and healthcare....but mostly jobs.  I cannot tell you enough having been unemployed off and on or looking for work from 2003 to 2005, how important a Job is for one's self-esteem.  This is why the Democratic Party has to perform on this watch.....they have to pull jobs out of hat over the next four years...or they lose in 2012 to the first Republican Star who comes along these next few years.
The pointy heads are still at it? they'll try anything. I guess that think that using Jeb Bush that they can overcome? HAHA, Jeb is filthy too. The open the Southern boarders and helped is big brother cheat to win the election.
Peggy Noonan wrote, "a great party needs to give. The question on the table is just how great is the current GOP and will it escape the chains about it forged by the religiously fundamentalist, faction?

Current behaviors based upon past actions lead one to consider the outcome is not good.

Not being a mind-reader,but I would guess that Peggy expressed a hope rather than a conviction on this issue.  While I do not agree with her conclusions in several issues, her reasoning processes are more than adequate.
“GOP officials have complained that their alternative proposals to bills pushed through by the Democratic Congress have not received enough attention from the media and thus have been ignored by most Americans."

GOP Playbook Lesson #56: When all else fails, whine and cry about the media and play the victim.

Why can't you people ever take any freakin' responsibility for anything?
