Wasn't Condi Rice Bush's Secretary of State? She was his scape goat. I can call it another word but thats personal and ugly. Those that wish to add their pesemistic overtures to Hillary's position need to remember "what used to represent our nation and really did nothing.

She didn't even bother to organize that branch of Government. The people that our tax dollars paid for never had the opportunity to even do their jobs during her tenure.

Let's hope for all of our sakes that these meetings are a start to improving relations with Pakistan.  That country is scary.  With its nukes, extremists and wars on both sides, this is the country to watch closely.  We need them on our side...

The world's most dangerous regional problems can't be solved by one person alone.  SOS Clinton can't be everywhere at once.  It was very smart of Pres Obama to name Holbrooke and Mitchell to specific regions because with the entire world agenda, Clinton would not have the necessary time to dedicate solely to one area.  These regions are extremely volatile and require constant attention to move even slightly forward.

SoS in name only - I suspect you're right, but then the same could be said of a lot of cabinet officials in a lot of administrations. They're selected for politics or to repay personal debts, and often given undersecretaries who can take care of them.

Wow, actual diplomacy going on. How rare it has been for some time. The cowboy shoot first and ask questions if you get around to it diplomacy is a thing of the past, thank God. I don't expect much in the beginning dialogs but just preliminary meetings can be helpful in setting the groundwork for the more productive meetings later on. Just like in business, sales aren't always made on the first meeting. Decisions aren't always made after only one meeting. One of the players may not be in office after August but setting the stage for dealing with others in his government and country in general is a step in the right direction. Snubbing those who don't agree with us on every itty bitty issue is stupid and dangerous. I am so glad that even if we agree to disagree that eventually common ground will be found and some real progress can be made in the defeat of The Taliban and Al Quaida as well as other radical Muslim extremists.

I was a Hillary supporter who ultimately voted Obama, but since she lost, I wish she stayed as my NY Senator...I think she could've done more for Obama's policies in the Senate, then simply regurgitating his foreign policy points as Sec of State. I think going from NY Senator to Sec of State was a demotion.

Very well written opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal today by Sens. McCain and Graham concerning enemy combatants.  They laid the issue out very nicely and made some recommendations.

The Dems have been brilliant at labeling the GOP the party of NO.  It's all BS of course, since the GOP is doing nothing different than the Dems did when they were out of power.  Sadly, the way Washington works is that the minority can rarely propose legislation...they can only stop legislation.  And for those on the left who continually want the Dems to change rules so that they only require 50 Senate votes and cite the "nuclear option" that the GOP considered...the GOP thought about it, but NEVER DID IT.  Amazing how both parties are so hypocritical.  When the GOP had Congress, filibusters were bad in the GOP's eyes, but were sacred to the Dems.  NOw that the Dems are in power, they have reversed their views.  Truly sad.

Msierra, you say that the Star Wars system is a failure. Have you seen the test?

First, the "Star Wars" system was the laser device meant to be in orbit. And I can tell you that the laser portion was working. I have seen some of the actual reports. The ground based test melted a tank in about 3 seconds. This system was the issue with the USSR that sparked the de-military space agreement.

The new system is ground and sea based missiles. So technically, this is not the Star Wars system, nor does it violate our agreement. The new system is not complete, and has had both successes and failures. This system is workable, and can be efficient use of dollars. If they can get it to top working condition, it was allow us to reduce military spending elsewhere.

It is in the President's power to cut this project, but that doesn't make it a "expensive failure". The failure is not unsurmountable technical issues, but giving in to political pressure.

Hillary is the consumate soldier for the country and the party.  Regurgitate Obama's words?  How about execute his plan...and that is what she is supposed to do.  

Hillary was my first choice for President but I have to say that Obama is doing a fantastic job and is adept at making the best use of the people around him....and quite possibly is a far better person for the job at this time.
