Ridge not running

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge will not run for U.S. Senate in 2010.

"After careful consideration and many conversations with friends and family and the leadership of my party, I have decided not to seek the Republican nomination for Senate," Ridge said in a statement, adding later, "The 2010 race has significant implications for my party, and that required thoughtful reflection. All of the above made my decision a difficult and deeply personal conclusion to reach. ... To those who believe that the Republican Party is facing challenges; they are right. To those who believe the Democratic Party is without its own difficulties, they are wrong. No one party has a monopoly on all of the answers. ... And so my desire and intention is to help my party craft solutions that both sides of the aisle can embrace."

This is a blow to Republicans who were hoping to recruit a candidate with the ability to defeat Arlen Specter, who defected to the Democratic Party. Recent polls, in fact, showed Ridge leading both Republican Pat Toomey in a GOP primary and Specter in a head-to-head general-election match up.

Ridge's full statement:

"After careful consideration and many conversations with friends and family and the leadership of my party, I have decided not to seek the Republican nomination for Senate.

"I am enormously grateful for the confidence my party expressed in me, the encouragement and kindness of my fellow citizens in Pennsylvania and the valuable counsel I received from so many of my party colleagues. The 2010 race has significant implications for my party, and that required thoughtful reflection. All of the above made my decision a difficult and deeply personal conclusion to reach. However, this process also impressed upon me how fortunate I am to have so many friends who volunteered to support my journey if I chose to take it and continue to offer their support after I conveyed to them this morning how I believe I can best serve my commonwealth, my party and my country.

"Public service has long played a significant role in my life. That service does not end here. There are causes to which I remain intensely committed, including my work on behalf of the disability community, our nation's veterans, our national security and the GOP -- the party I enthusiastically joined more than four decades ago.

"To those who believe that the Republican Party is facing challenges; they are right. To those who believe the Democratic Party is without its own difficulties, they are wrong. No one party has a monopoly on all of the answers. The more important view, in my mind, is that we remember, whether Republican or Democrat, we are foremost Americans. And as Americans, we have always overcome challenges when we put partisanship aside and solutions first.

"And so my desire and intention is to help my party craft solutions that both sides of the aisle can embrace. My hope is to raise the level of civility in public debate and raise the bar on outcomes that serve our citizens fully, fairly and equally. My belief is that those in my home state can best be served by the principles of limited government, less taxes, competent governance and shared responsibility. So I stand ready and excited to help my party and my country prevail as we continue to work to preserve and protect our strong, storied and much beloved nation."

Smart man...yawn...
I'll get you started---throw limpbag and insane hanity under the bus for good!!!!Until the Repuke party banishes these two hate filled spewing idiots they will have a serious hard time defining themselves other that what these two stand for----Party first country second!
Doesn't matter who the Republicans run in Pennsylvania, he/she would lose. Pennsylvania is just like Michigan and New York. They'll have to live under Democratic rule for a decade or so and see how crummy their lives can be before they realize everything the Democrats promise them is a total lie, and a very expensive lie at that. Then they smarten up and vote in some Republicans, and then their lives improve because of lower taxes and less government.
Is it true that Obama's thugs made death threats and that's why Ridge pulled out??
Does this mean he's going to try and run for President in 2012?  This is a race ripe with third part potential...will a libertarian please stand up?
I can't believe Specter is a threat to anyone.  Who would vote for that idiot?
I'll get you started---throw limpbag and insane hanity under the bus for good!!!!Until the Repuke party banishes these two hate filled spewing idiots they will have a serious hard time defining themselves other that what these two stand for----Party first country second!

And WTF are you?????
The WHOLE Republican strategy was to recruit RINOs like Arlen Specter to run in Florida and Pennsylvania

GREAT !!

Move right but get some 'moderate' front men

What a 'Dog and Pony Show' !!

WHY NOT run Right Wingers like Pat Toomey ??
If he embodies your 'Principles' (sic)
RUN ON THEM !!

Recruit Dick Cheney to run in PA !!
Union Joe what did lower taxes for the wlthiest less government funds for our crumbling infrastructure get us but the colossal mess the supply siders triggle down my leg got us. It amazes me how the Gop corp/robber barons manipulates you guy/gals to do their bidding for them with the us. vs them and demonizing those who do not perscribe to their lying ways. Read the great book what's the matter w/ Kansas.
Union Joe, what you mean by less government? Is that a government like Somalia or Darfur. Please explain. Just asking.
Looks like Joe the Faux Plumber is bailing on the g’NO’P as well according to Time Magazine…. Another rat jumping ship!  Told you that by the end of this year they would be falling over one another to loose the  ‘R’ Letter…  seems that the process is just accelerating…

Any bets on who steps up to the plate as their new ‘mascot’??  Who wants to take one for their team of losers?

This stuff is too funny!
This is even more reason to get rid of Specter, as any number of REAL Democrats could beat Toomey.
Ron, Indiana, thanks for your comments. We're not going for another two weeks & will stay through  Memorial Day, which seemed like the right time to be there. I'm very much looking forward to this trip.

'Hate filled spewing idiots' ?  Have you looked in the mirror lately Terry?
Union Joe: "Then they smarten up and vote in some Republicans, and then their lives improve because of lower taxes and less government."

So please tell me, Union Joe, just how much our lives improved during the 8 years of Bush/Cheney.  Lower taxes for the middle class?  Uh... nope.  Lower taxes for the wealthy?  Sure thing!  An economy that prospers?  Uh... nope.  An economy in the tank?  Sure thing!  Peace?  Uh... nope.  A war based on complete lies?  Sure thing!  More than 4000 dead American soldiers, and still counting.  A treasury drained of funds after a surplus was left by Bill Clinton.  I'm waiting for you to tell me one thing that was better at the end of Republican rule, Union Joe.  Just one thing.
Bad Governor, bad head of homeland security, good decision, he would have lost anyway !
How is joe the faux plumber? I'm still waiting for him to buy that business and pull in the cool 250K in PROFIT per year that he needs so he can share some of the wealth.
Smart move on his part especially since the GOP seems determined to "purify" itself at the moment.  His pro-choice and other moderate stances would not play well in 2010.  He should wait until the GOP starts to play less to the right and more to the center.  Listening to Limbaugh's comments regarding Colin Powell via Countdown makes me think it will be a while before that happens.  Speaking of Limbaugh, he's still saying Powell endorsed Obama because of race--dimbwit.  Obviously, Limbaugh missed the caucus vote boat in Iowa which is about 95% white.  Found myself wondering why anyone would give a speech saying he's got a new $400 million contract so just don't participate in the recession.  No wonder the republicans insist on tax cuts for the wealthy--it's for Limbaugh so he'll like them.  Just remember, when the GOP says tax cuts, think Limbaugh.
So what color code of terror does this news about FRidge correlate with?  "Puke Green"?  I think so.  Repukes make me puke green.
Then they smarten up and vote in some Republicans, and then their lives improve because of lower taxes and less government.
Union Joe (Sent Thursday, May 07, 2009 12:47 PM)

Sorry Union, but that makes no sense. If their lives improve when they vote in a Republican, how does the repuke ever get voted out?
Don't worry the writing is on the wall. Joe Sestak will be the new Senator from PA. come next election. Specter is done and Ridge is smart enough to run from the party of Limpburger and Insanity.
Why should Tom Ridge take on a bruising primary battle when his pro choice views will be vilified for the party that selected Sarah Palin over him for Vice President in 2008?  I don't blame him at all.
Is it true that Obama's thugs made death threats and that's why Ridge pulled out??
God Help US - Obama Won't! (Sent Thursday, May 07, 2009 12:50 PM)

Obama has thugs? Or is it true that you're just starting an ignorant rumor? God help you -- seems like you need it.
Is Union Joe really Joe the Plumber who has no credibility anyway or any idea what he's talking about?
The reason why Pennsylvannia was a Republican state is that they forced people looking for a job there to sign up as a Republicans, now that it has all been exposed, the "GOPosaurus" has nothing to offer anymore.
I am both encouraged by Mr. Ridge's call for civility in debate; and saddened by the fact that he apparently would be unable to achieve this from within the current Republican Party.  I hope he means what he says- and has some success making it a reality.
I find right wingers hilarious.  They say they want less government, except when it comes to peoples personal lives, the bedroom, school corriculum, marraige, legislating morals, imprisoning people without trial, torture, and messing with outer foriegn countries governments and economies.

They are the American version of the Taliban. They have the same control issues. The just use Tea bags instead of guns...at least for now.  But they want to make sure the have pleanty of assault weapons around just in case.
As long as Rush Limbaugh is running things in the Republican Party a moderate like Ridge will not have a chance.
That's good for the Democrats because the country has moved on from the Reagan Era, the last popular Republican. Bush made such a mess of the country that most thinking people are turned off by the GOP brand.

Specter is also passed his prime and should step aside after this term. I can't vote in PA so my opinion doesn't count but I hope Sestak is the new senator in 2010.
It is amusing to read what the democrats are writing - as if the republicans have had a monopoly in Pennsylvania or something.  Funny thing is, it's the opposite.  Look at any screwed up area around the country like Philadelphia, New Orleans, Washington, DC. Detroit, Baltimore, their respective states, the whole New England area, any place that has been dominated and monopolized by democrats.  They keep screwing things up and yet keep getting elected to fix problems they themselves created.  How long will this insanity continue?  Maybe some real "change" would be to get rid of the democrats, get us all out from under their 70+ year death grip, and let the republicans have a true majority once and for all.  Now that would be a real, positive change instead of the sham that is this current administration.

I've asked that question several times here, and to date haven't received an answer from any of the Bush/Cheney/GOP apologist.  Don't hold your breath.

This is good news.  I think Ridge would have won the primary and had a good shot at the General election.  He is a moderate Republican (just like Specter).  What I found funny about the idea is that suddenly the GOP was interested in winning the race (just to get back at Specter).  I mean the whole reason Specter left (is because the GOP wanted to get back at him for the Stimulus vote by undercutting him with uber-conservative Toomey).  My guess Ridge took a look into next year (and all the time after that) and realized eventually he would be villified for being a moderate (just like Specter was).

I think that if Specter shapes up a bit, there will be a competitive primary between he and Sestak.  Ridge not running actually makes Sestak chances greater (because Specter has broader General appeal).  I think Ridge is the only heavy weight they could get to retain this seat next year.  I'm 99% sure the Dem candidate is going to win at this point.
Hey union joe,

Would you rather live in the Republican ran Missisippi where they rank last in almost all categories. Would you rather go to University of Missisippi or University of Michigan, University of Penn.... Look union joe, all your southern politicians that affiliates with the Republican party would rather sent their kids to school in a blue states. The greatest cities in the Americas are still New York City, Los Angles and San Francisco. Remember union joe Detroit, Michigan was the arsenal of democracy during WWII. Hey union joe what kind of America would this country be had the conferderate states won the civil war. I bet you union joe slavery would still be legal in your neck of the wood. Wise up buddy your idealogy has failed since the inception of this country. If your group had its way the freeway system would not had been built
AL in DC,

The places you mentioned as "screwed up", if they even deserve that label, aren't troubled areas because Dems have been running them.  They are troubled because they have a lot of poor people that live there.  So they lack sufficent tax base to improve conditions.  I am a perfect example.  I work in Pittsburgh, but I live in the suburbs, just like most of the other people who work in Pittsburgh and have good paying jobs.  All I pay this city for the priviledge of working here is $75 per year.  That does not cover all the city services I use.  That is the plight that all major city governments are facing.  With the exception of maybe New York and Chicago, most well paid Americans no longer want to live in the city.
Scared to post on Ridge or about all or of those Government security contracts he set up at Homeland Security this guy has gotten  money the same way half his party has all for one and one for all and would not last one debate.

Not a lipmbag tea loving fool like you!!!!!!!!!!!!
'Hate filled spewing idiots' ?  Have you looked in the mirror lately Terry?
Because you'll see a hate filled spewing idiot there (Sent

Remember it was the Repuke party who called veterans like me who spoke out against the former dunce in chief UNPATRIOTIC!!!!!!!!!The current state of the Repuke party is all about PARTY First country second!
Maybe the Republicans can run Joe the Plumber. Oh wait, he's now left the GOP too.
He would have been crushed in the primary by Toomey who would go on to be crushed by Specter/Sestak in precisely the manner that Specter described at his party-switch announcement.
Still having the stench of the Bush Administration on him it is probably a wise decision for Tom Ridge not to run for anything right now. Maybe in 20 years when memories are dimmer he would have a chance but not now.
