First thoughts: Jobs, jobs, jobs

*** Jobs, jobs, jobs: The big news today is the latest unemployment number. It stands at 8.9% with another 539,000 jobs shed. It's the highest unemployment number since 1983 and is up from last month's 8.5 percent. The number is pretty much what was expected, as CNBC’s Erin Burnett noted on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, adding that the jobs-loss number was lower than expected. Not reaching the 600,000 jobs lost is an important psychologically, and it could be an indicator of a slowing in the recession, since “jobs are the last thing to recover,” Burnett said. There is a lot of confidence among the president's economic team that we have bottomed; There is an assumption many companies have done all of the tough stuff and many Americans, personally, have done the same thing. No one was spending money these last six months, whether business or personal. But with the market starting to move and with many companies cut to the bone, the expectation is that spending by both business and personal households will increase and that will cushion whatever increase in unemployment we continue to see over the next few months. There is still one big unknown out there: what happens when the millions of unemployed lose their benefits and what happens when those laid-off workers who have been living off of severance packages run out of THAT money? Today, the president talks on job training and job creation (11:30 am ET) at the White House. The point of this new program is to show some compassion for those who are unemployed and looking for job retraining.

Video: President Obama says he wants to change what he calls "senseless rules" that prevent out-of-work Americans from being trained for the industries of tomorrow.

*** Speaking of economic strength: The unemployment number follows those bank stress tests released officially yesterday. Treasury says the top 19 banks need to raise about $75 billion in capital. And if they can’t, the government will give it to them, so there’s enough of a cushion. The administration really here is trying to distinguish between strong banks and weak banks, and it says none risks insolvency. It’s a shift from earlier when the administration was criticized by Wall Street as casting a pall over the entire banking sector. But it’s hard to know whether these tests are real or just P.R. It’s almost impossible -- from a non-partisan, non-ideological point of view -- to validate the legitimacy of these stress tests. Listening to White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs use words like "instill confidence" sounds more aimed at the market. Maybe the administration is banking on that kind of language sparking a recovery. If that happens, it won't matter if these stress tests are legit or just smoke and mirrors. There's an argument that the economy needs a little smoke-and-mirrors confidence boost every now and then. That said, let's remember, the credibility of both the administration and Fed Chair Ben Bernanke is on the line with this one, so it's hard to imagine they would have been sloppy with these tests, since the political punishment for glossing over these stress tests would be severe.

*** The interest group balancing act: The administration also holds a Spanish-language town hall with Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis that will be live-streamed from the White House Web page. Again, it's part of outreach to the largest growing bloc of the electorate. Hispanic groups are also lobbying hard for a Supreme Court pick. But so are other Democratic interest groups, like gay-rights advocates and now, as The Hill reports, the Congressional Black Caucus is pushing to have one its members be the pick to replace retiring Justice David Souter. “They are pressing the merits of Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.), who would increase the number of African- Americans on the court to two,” The Hill reports. By the way, many Hispanic Democratic activists believe the administration hasn't been nearly as aggressive as it should be when it comes to appointing Hispanics into high levels of government. It's a rock-and-a-hard-place issue: there aren't a lot of well-known names for some top positions but there won't be a lot of folks for these positions if the administration doesn't find more Hispanics for the mid-level jobs that would lead to the big appointments. And it's the mid-level jobs where Hispanics are disappointed to date.

*** A rough start for the GOP: Could the Republican Party have gotten off to a rougher start in the Obama era? It's hard to think so. Even with Bush and Cheney no longer heading the party, the GOP finds its favorability ratings at or near all-time lows. Despite their enthusiasm for their unified opposition to Obama (on the stimulus, the budget), they're blamed more for the lack of bipartisanship in DC. While starting out with all the advantages in NY-20, they still found a way to lose that race. Despite the initial positive reaction to his victory as RNC chair, Michael Steele's reign has been, shall we say, not good. And holding on to 41 votes in the Senate, they enabled a Republican who proved he could win in the increasingly blue state of Pennsylvania to switch parties, giving Dems the prospect of a filibuster-proof majority. Yes, Obama is popular right now. And, yes, the GOP is still paying for the sins of Bush and Cheney. But what has to disappoint Republicans right now is that most of their recent problems have been self-inflicted. And to top all of this off, an effort to re-brand the party ends up causing an internal fissure between one of the party's supposed rising stars, Eric Cantor, and many of the leading conservative voices, including Rush Limbaugh. Never mind the silly debate over whether Reagan should be used as an icon or not. The issue of Reagan reminds us of the Kennedy-obsession Democrats had for decades. One could argue it took the Democrats nearly 30 years to kick the Kennedy habit (maybe longer). So, this Reagan issue may take the Republicans another 10 years to get over.

Video: Hardball's Chris Matthews talks with former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge about his decision not to run against Arlen Specter for the Senate.

*** On the other hand…: Republicans believe they're planting the seeds for future growth. The near-unanimous opposition to Obama's stimulus and spending has been an effort to regain the mantle of fiscal discipline. They're holding town halls across the country to listen to voters and, more importantly, get out of Washington. And the National Republican Senatorial Committee has recruited well for 2010 -- Portman, Blunt/Steelman, maybe Castle, maybe Crist, a decent challenger against Boxer looks possible in California, Bunning may actually retire and Judd Gregg seems to be giving Republicans some hope he'll run again. Still, losing out on Ridge yesterday was a big blow. (And don’t miss Ridge on Hardball yesterday, refusing to say who he'd vote for between Toomey and Democrat Specter. It’s a “wonderful thing,” he said, that in this country we have a “secret ballot.”) The real question for the GOP will be whether these seeds can grow in a ground that's been so damaged by the previous administration. Strikingly, Republicans have yet to publicly break from Bush, whether on the issues (like insistence on tax cuts) or in tone (the GOP Web ads arguing Dems have made the country less safe).

*** Speaking of Bush-Cheney…: The Cheney legacy project continues. In his latest defense, Dick Cheney on a North Dakota radio show again blasted Obama on Guantanamo and torture, as well as the administration’s handling of the economy, the auto industry, even the fly by in New York City. It’s true that in the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll a plurality do not approve of Obama's handling of Guantanamo or the torture memos, for example. But with Cheney's approval ratings what they are -- lowest ever -- there isn't much sympathy for him as a messenger among the American people and the Obama administration has to smirk every time it sees him on TV or on the radio. And how about his words of advice for the GOP? “I think it would be a mistake for us to moderate. This is about fundamental beliefs and values and ideas…” By the way, has anyone noticed there aren't many Bush officials sticking up for Cheney in these recent debates? Could it be Cheney's doing this because he thinks some of his Bush administration colleagues are going to start dumping on him as various books begin to be written and circulated?

*** Pelosi under the gun: As many problems as Republicans have, there are still some lingering issues for Democrats in the underbrush. We noted a couple of weeks ago that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi couldn’t seem to completely keep her story straight on what she knew on torture techniques. She has been pressing for a so-called Truth Commission, yet it was unclear how much she exactly knew about the tactics and how vehemently she voiced disagreement when she was briefed that these tactics could be employed. And then there’s this today from the Washington Post: “Intelligence officials released documents this evening saying that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was briefed in September 2002 about the use of harsh interrogation tactics against al-Qaeda prisoners, seemingly contradicting her repeated statements over the past 18 months that she was never told that these techniques were actually being used.” And there’s also that tricky issue of those ethics investigations that still haven’t happened relating to Jack Murtha and Charlie Rangel. It hasn't been the greatest 100 days, politically, for Pelosi, though she certainly has been a loyal soldier for President Obama's agenda. Pelosi advocates would argue she's taking many of the political arrows that would normally be aimed at the president.

*** Remembering Jack Kemp: Today at 2:00 pm ET is the memorial service for former Republican congressman/VP candidate Jack Kemp at the National Cathedral. The Wall Street Journal's Daniel Henninger asked yesterday if Republicans should forget Ronald Reagan. "The answer to that historic question is an apt subject this week as the GOP, looking for a path from the wilderness, says farewell at National Cathedral tomorrow to Jack Kemp, who remained a Reaganite to the end," The Journal wrote. "Jack Kemp, anyone who spent time around him will tell you, stayed on message. That message, like Reagan's, had a number of parts, but it is not possible to even guess how many times Jack Kemp summarized his explanations of that message in three words: 'Work, save and invest.' Republicans should think hard about building a governing philosophy on the foundation of those three words, ideas that most voters understand. ... Mr. Obama won the election and deserves time to see what his vision adds to the nation's productive life. If while it awaits that, the Republican Party can't renew what Reagan and Kemp gave them, its listening tour could last a very long time."

*** ‘Oboomers,’ a lasting coalition or an Obama bubble? Note this CQ piece about the swing districts with heavy African-American populations that Democrats will have to defend in 2010 -- without Barack Obama at the top of the ticket. “Banking on a different electorate in Obama’s first midterm -- one with less energy among African Americans and first-time voters -- [Cincinnati Republican Steve] Chabot is confident that he can oust freshman Democratic Rep. Steve Driehaus in a district in which 27 percent of residents are black. Not so fast, says Driehaus, one of a handful of Democratic victors in competitive districts influenced by African American voters -- call them the Oboomers -- whose first re-election bids will be watched closely by political strategists in both parties. ‘We actually thought there would be a greater turnout in 2008,’ Driehaus said. ‘While the African-American vote made a difference, it was all of it together.’” The 2010 midterms are shaping up to be the first test of whether this broad Democratic coalition is lasting -- or if it was just a Barack Obama bubble.

*** New president meets old tradition: Tomorrow night is the hottest ticket in town, the time-honored Washington tradition of the White House Correspondents Dinner. It will be Obama’s first as president. Comedienne Wanda Sykes is the featured entertainer. So what’s this going to be like? There were lots of highlights out of the Bush ones: Remember Colbert (awkward), that impersonator, Laura’s “Desperate Housewife” line or striking up the band? It will be interesting to see Obama settle into this stage. The only place we’ve seen him in a similar setting was that Al Smith white-tie dinner with John McCain during the campaign. Obama’s jokes were OK, but McCain stole the show. By the way, we know who WON’T be there… Sarah Palin. After yet another accepted and then unaccepted invitation, the Alaska Daily News reports, Palin has decided to stay behind “because of the severity of the flooding in the Interior.” Her husband Todd, though, will go in her place.

*** Enough already: By the way, the the Palins and the Edwards' continue to give daytime TV plenty of fodder. But we continue to ask: why? Why, in particular, is Elizabeth Edwards doing this? Apparently her friends are wondering the same thing.

We got another Cheney outburst yesterday.  I think we have a real live Jack Nicholson ‘Colonel Nathan Jessup’, someone who is just dying to tell us all to go to hell and that he “doesn’t give a damn what you think”.  Dick, you soon will find out your bully tactics may land you in jail.  We are tired of you.  Stop pushing us around, or we will act.  Do as you profess, exit the stage; use the right side exit of course.

This is probably rotten for me to say, but do you ever wonder what the spouses of Wing Nut wacko’s think?  Can you imagine what Mrs. Sean Hannity thinks?  Or Mrs. Bill O’ Reilly?  Or the husband of Michelle Bachman?  Or Lynn Cheney?  Is it any wonder Rush and Ann Coulter are unmarried?

Think about this, 2 or 3 people out of 10 in your office fully support these people?  Do you know who they are?  Will you avoid them?
WHEW!  Another wild week here at FR!

My how time flies when you’re having fun!

I don’t remember who said it about ‘lobbing zingers’ back & forth as a new pastime but isn’t that the TRUTH!  Gotta keep driving the g’NO’p CRAZY by staying on target to ALWAYS keep the truth out there!

Sunlight & Garlic vs. Vampire = Demise
Truth & Optimism vs. Reslugs = Demise

Don’t know why these days… but the party of losers is reminding me more & more of a bunch of vampires – Evil – Dark – Bloodthirsty – Heartless etc… Poor ‘G’nopers… sucks to be them!

So to all my fellow ‘libs’… we’ve fought a tough battle again this week and have earned a few well deserved days off!  Spring has sprung so enjoy your weekends!  See you back bright & early Monday a.m.!

And to Chuck & crew – thanks for keeping it genuine – this is CONTINUALLY the BEST place to come for an adult (for the most part)…   debate.

Hey Domenico – you flying solo there today buddy??
"Jobs, jobs, jobs" - or lack there of. So what is going on with Obama's so called stimulus plan? Doesn't seem like much of anything is being stimulated. The biggest growth area for jobs in the last month was, you guessed it, goverment jobs - where the government added 72,000 employees. Now Obama is trying to spin that the amount of jobs lost is less then the prevsious month (540,000 instead of 600,000). What a success that is!
To Run or Not To Run?

Deciding to run for a political office is serious business.  If you win, take one step forward.  If you lose, take two steps backward…and go home.  You never stay in the same place in politics.  Tom Ridge is smart not to run in Pennsylvania.  Joe Sustak may be smart to run against Arlen Specter.  It’s always a gamble.  Each candidate should do some “due diligence” and listen to Main Street before deciding.  Personally, I seldom trust the political pundits as their perspective is so narrow and biased. (I have no room to talk about being biased!)

The Two Big Issues:

Within a year the economy will improve.  The Republican can take no credit for the recovery and it will dearly cost them in 2010.  The two big issues are: What will happen to the Republican Party? And does Congress have the courage to face the torture issue? Sometimes its hard to separate what you want to happen from what you think will happen.

The Republican Party:

If the economy improves, and I think it will, then the GOP will lose more seats in both the House and Senate.  The “Party of NO” mantra will stick.  What I am looking for is which office holding Republican will step forward and seriously negotiate with the Dems? That will be the Republican who has courage to stand up to the right wing nuts.  That Republican should win the “Profiles in Courage” award.  Colin Powell stood up to Limbaugh earlier this week.  Rush retaliated by making a racist attack on Powell.  Yesterday Cheney said it is a mistake for the GOP to moderate.  I don’t see the Conservatives moving one inch to the middle.  They would rather lose elections than give up their power and Reagan ideology.

Torture:

I have said all along that President would pardon Bush and Cheney if it came to that.  The mystery is: Will the American people pressure Congress to investigate? The Republicans do not want and investigation, so it won’t be bipartisan.  Waiting seems to be the Obama strategy.  Move not, unless you see an advantage is the Sun Tzu approach.  I’ve concluded that Obama knows torture is a crime, but to investigate would put all his projects at risk. Healthcare, energy, picking the right Supreme Court justice are his priorities.  Addressing torture could be a long wait. Maybe in his second term.  Yes, he will win a second term (and that is not wishful thinking).
Take Me Out To The Ballgame –

You know, for all the joking and laughing being directed towards Manny Ramirez, we have to remember that this incident will most likely cost him an induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. So another potential great bites the dust. All his own making. He was tested a number of times over the years so I have to assume he was a legitimate slugger during our 2004 and 2007 championship years. Certainly in the same league as some of the greatest who ever played. But then who the heck knows anymore.

He was a player whom we loved up here for not only his contribution to two World Series titles, but because he was a little off the wall, a little goofy, with a lot of immaturity in him. Why he was never comfortable in Boston I can’t understand. Rumors circulated that it was Schilling. I would say Manny was one of our top two or three favorite athletes who ever played here. We adored him for many years.

I guess from what they were saying last night on ESPN, these athletes get addicted to being considered one of the best. And will go to great lengths to stay at the top. And so today we hear that Dom DiMaggio has died. Well, in many ways, so didn’t Ramirez. Not good. So long Manny. Thanks for the joy you gave us. You didn’t have to do this. Same can be said for A-Rod, Clemens, Bonds, Sosa and so on. You cheated not only us, but yourselves as well.
______________
Back to real baseball and real pennant races. Oh, and basketball. Go Celtics.
Hey MSierra, SF - What do you think of the 6 propositions we get to vote on next Tuesday?  1F sounded interesting in making the legislature pass balanced budgets or they don't get pay raises, but when you really think about it it means that the lawmakers will gut programs in order to avoid budget deficits to get their pay raises whether they deserve them or not.  I got a flyer pushing these 6 proposals as good and it sure looked like a lot of groups were backing it.  But what caught my eye was the fine print at the end of the last page, it showed that these proposals are the work of Arnold's "California Dream Team".  I also do not like the proposition to borrow $5 billion from future lotto revenues, the same dirty trick Arnold used to "balance" the budget problem years ago and that haunts us still.  I'm voting against all of the propositions because I don't trust that tinseltown freak when it comes to balancing the budget because he'll screw the little people to ensure him and his rich and greedy pals don't pay more income tax.  Just Say No to Arnold's Nightmare!

Another fine week here at First Read, the best website for political discourse.  Thanks FR crew for all the great articles and Obama supporters for such great comments.

It looks like the evidence that Nancy Pelosi knew about waterboarding is rather inconclusive so I still believe she wasn't informed.  She was only briefed once in 2002, before waterboarding was used so she is correct to say she was not informed that waterboarding was used.  Case closed!

In Pelosi We Trust!
Just Say No to Arnold's Nightmare Propositions!
Obama keeps attacking American corporations, almost to the same level as Bush used to attack terrorists. Every move Obama makes favors the unions and is highly critical of investors (take Chrysler as an example). Obama just can't figure out who creates jobs in the country. The answer is corporations and their investors Barack, and you better start considering what's good for them before they start cutting more jobs because of your policies.
Why Todd Palin will be there is beyond me.  He doesn't even want to be a part of the US.  I read he's there as a Fix News guest.  He's worse than Joe the Dumber.
8.9% unemployment - and even Obama says it's going to go higher. Why'd we elect Obama again? To lose all these jobs?
Note to politicians:

Do not use "stress tests" to score political points. You will cause panic and a run. The FDIC will have to step in.

See IndyMac Bank.
Obama says he's going to make $5000 in Pell grants available to each unemployed worker for retraining. Retrained for what Barack - flipping burgers? Obama has his jack-boot on the neck of American businesses. And those businesses will continue to cut people and jobs overseas at an ever increasing rate unless Obama gets smart and starts working with business instead of against it.
"By the way, the the Palins and the Edwards' continue to give daytime TV plenty of fodder. But we continue to ask: why? Why, in particular, is Elizabeth Edwards doing this? Apparently her friends are wondering the same thing. " - First Read
==================================================
In a world where people feel to need to send out a "tweet" to tell us all what they had for dinner, it is puzzling to me that Elizabeth Edwards decision to tell HER STORY in the SHE SEES FIT is a matter to be debated and ridiculed in the media.

Elizabeth Edwards is a public figure. The media has discussed every aspect of her personal life publically with no apologies.

But for her discuss her own life is suddenly baffling?

I think the hypocrisy, and the need to attack the victim in this situation, is really just another sad commentary on the state of "the media" in this country.

The same group of folks who would scour through a Presidential candidates kindergarten records and church bulletins looking for dirt now present themselves as the arbiters of what is "appropriate" to discuss.

Ridiculous.
Yea, Great start for the Obama Administration.  Republican seeds of growth?  I thought they were purifing the party.  I hope with Cheney and others as the "new" face of the party that they purify themselves down to 35 seats in the senate by the next election  cycle.  Seeds of growth...

They are planting seeds of a perpetual Demactatic Majority.
It's good that the republicans feel proud of their near unanimous opposition to the Obama stimulus plan and budget. The only problem is that it appears the economy is starting to turn around and is nearing bottom.

So where does that leave republicans? Out there saying it will never work and is too costly while it is working.

It won't be easy for President Obama to cut the $17B. That is why he is starting small. If everyone agreed to taking out those programs, I guess they wouldn't have been in there in first place! And as for the talk of it being such a small percentage of the budget, where is the reminder that about 2/3 of the budget is mandatory spending that can't be cut and another 15+% is defense - which is also hard to cut (especially when they try to cut the C-17 which the Air Force doesn't even want, but because parts are built in so many states, no one wants to see it dropped).

Awkward?  How about awesome?  Watching Colbert rib Bush, with Bush sitting right there, was one of the funniest things I've ever seen!  I'll never forget his line, "this administration is soaring!  Like the Hindenburg!"  It's funny, because it's true.
FR [[Republicans believe they're planting the seeds for future growth. The near-unanimous opposition to Obama's stimulus and spending has been an effort to regain the mantle of fiscal discipline. ]]

It sure won't be hard to do for the Republicans. Obama is spending money at a rate that causes the US to be in real long term economic jeopardy. The market dropped quite a lot yesterday. Do you know why? It was because no one was buying the T-bills the government was selling to fund the US debt. That means the government will have to pay a higher interest rate for those bonds if the expect people an dcountries like China to buy them. The US credit card is maxed out.
This has been a pretty good week and the weeks ahead look to be as good or better.

Have a great weekend and God bless America

So Obama will show up to meet with his good friends (and cheerleaders) in the media, but he won't show up for a prayer breakfast. Interesting.
If Nancy Pelosi knew about the torture as it was ongoing, what exactly would she have been expected to do with that information, make a citizens arrest?

Does letting alot of people know that you are breaking the law absolve you of the crime?

If I rob a bank to pay my mortgage, should I not be prosecuted because "it worked"?

Should we keep the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay imprisoned forever?

Should Americans who are imprisoned overseas also be imprisoned forever?

Why should Americans be afraid of the alleged "terrorists" being housed at Guantanamo Bay when every week, we have U.S. citizens going on murderous armed rampages? Could the "terrorists" do any worse?

Pelosi. What can you say about her. Clearly she is lying about what she knew back in 2002. The memos are clear that Pelosi was briefed and knew exactly what was going on to fight terrorism. Now she's got caught in huge lie. Let's see if the liberals will be consistent. Liberals always yelped that "Bush Lied" about the war. Now it looks like Pelosi did the same. Lets see if the Libs attack her with the same ferocity as they did Bush.
Elizabeth Edwards is showing the world what a beast her hubby really is. The cad with the $400 haircuts may a child by another woman, while Liz battles cancer.

Let's not criticize Miss Edwards. Oprah wants the dope on Edwards for ratings (may sweeps). Another one pimping herself for the love of money.

---------------------------------------------

The more Darth Cheney speaks the more he damages the GOP by reminding folks why nobody likes the Bush Administration.

While I wouldn't otherwise credit "W" for being smart, he at least seems to understand that it might be a pretty good idea to lay low right now.
More and more American's continue to buy guns, including AK 47's, at gun shows throughout the country.

They must be expecting something big.
Maybe to get a better view on the Obama poll ratings, the pollsters should start asking the 4+ million people that are now unemployed since Obama won in Novemeber what they think about Barack H. Obama. By the way unemployed folks - you're on the hook for the trillions of dollars Obama has spent on corporate welfare when you finally get that burger flipping job and are gainfully employed again.
OBAMA IS THE MOST DIVISIVE PRESIDENT, EVER!

FROM DAY ONE, OBAMA HAS IGNORED THE CONCERNS OF 47% AMERICANS ---
47 OUT OF EVERY 100 -- AND THE OF 60 MILLION THE VOTERS WHO VOTED FOR THE REPUBLICAN! --- HOW MUCH MORE DIVISIVE COULD A PRESIDENT BE?

FROM THE START, OBAMA HAS TOLD EVERYONE THAT IT IS --- THE 'DEMOCRATS vs. THE REPUBLICANS' ---  "US vs. THEM" POLITICS  --- THE LIBERAL IDEAS vs. THE CONCERVATIVE IDEAS.

"I WON" SO THEREFORE NEARLY HALF OF THE VOTERS DON'T COUNT --- ONLY OBAMA COUNTS.

OBAMA HAS ASSERTED THAT HIS RATHER MODEST VICTORY HAS GIVEN HIM A 'MANDATE' TO RULE ONLY FROM THE LIBERAL DEMOCRAT VIEW --- AND TO IGNORE THE REPUBLICAN VIEW.

OBAMA'S DIVISIVE ATTITUDE HAS FILTERED DOWN TO DEMOCRAT & REPUBLICAN GRASSROOTS --- AND NOW THERE IS MORE POLARIZATION THAN EVER IN OUR COUNTRY.

IT DOESN'T TAKE A POLITICAL SCIENTIST TO UNDERSTAND THE DIVIDE THAT OBAMA HAS CREATED.

OBAMA IS INHERENTLY ARROGANT AND DISMISSIVE OF ANYONE WHO DOESN'T AGREE WITH HIM.

OBAMA HAS CREATED THE 'GREAT DIVIDE' AND THE DIVISIVENESS WILL CONTINUE FOR AS A LONG AS OBAMA IS PRESIDENT --- THE COUNTRY'S ONLY HOPE IS THE 2012 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

OBAMA HAS INTENTIONALLY DIVIDED OUR COUNTRY AS NO PRESIDENT HAS EVER DONE!

Rough start for republicans, start what?Since 1-20=09 they have done everything they can to prevent any more droughts. All those tears, all the whinning, all the we care about ya'll now,Lincoln is now the party of Limbaugh,Sean Hannity, and the far right. Is there party paying for the sins of B&C,one has to wonder, when one sins, they have to repent, for sins to be forgiven. To date I for one have heard NO one admit there sins.Once again FR has missed the memo on the listening tour,Rush re-named it this week, the title now is" we will tell you what we think, when to think it,and how much you will like what we say.Sounds like a plan to me,plan to lose more supporters, more elections, more seats at the table.Cheney is a distraction,he says six words while he didn't give a rip what anyone thought, but now that he is and will continue to be haunted by his approval of torture, trying to sell it like he sold the war,Bush was not bright  enough to put this plan .Cheney will go down as one of the worst elected person, ever,I don't care how he choses to spin it.History dosen't change because Dick Cheney says so. And history will not be kind to B&C.I have real doubt that Pelosi where told about torture. They didn't tell Colin Powell either, chief of staff to the Military.Trasparency was a slogan, not a goal.
Just think of the howls from the leftwingers if Bush was President with these economic numbers. But, Obama is in charge, so they won't hold him responsible.
Pelosi is just a Bush-hating troll who doesn't know her butt from a h--- in the ground. And she's Obie's puppetmaster.
First Read: "Pelosi, though she certainly has been a loyal soldier for President Obama's agenda. "

You've got that flipped. It should read: "Obama has certainly been a loyal soldier for House Speaker Pelosi's agenda." Nancy is the one writing the (non)stimulus plan and this years budget. She'll even move the spending up a few notches on the budget to probably $3.8T or so. Obama will just sign it. He doesn't care, it's not his money. If he needs more, he'll just print it.
The Republicans are not the only ones paying for Bush and Cheney's sins. Everybody seems to be paying except them. Save for the fact that every time Cheney opens his pie-hole, effectively hammering another nail in the GOP coffin, I wish he would just go back to the slime pits that he crawled from. Cheney is like Jack the Ripper, showing up with knife in hand, to comfort the survivor's families.

Wanda Sykes as featured entertainer: This is going to be priceless. I can't wait to see the excerpts from the Correspondents Dinner on Sunday.
Can you imagine trying to lose weight, and everytime you lost half a pound, commentators came on TV and said:

You lost 1/2 a pound! Big deal - you weigh 250 pounds you big slob!

That's the media approach to budget cuts - either lose 80 pounds TODAY or you are a failure.

What a sad way to view the world.
It's good to see the rate of job loss coming down from the highs of the past few months.  It was where I hoped it would be and we must hope that the job loss numbers decrease over the coming months, well except for the tory traitor party who is responsible for these job losses in the first place.  Heckuva Job Clueless George for wrecking our economy!  Hang your heads in shame Evil Elephants for supporting the deregulation and tax cut welfare for the rich and greedy that caused this depression.

I imagine that the correspondent's dinner will be far better than it has been the past 8 years.  I'm glad that Obama changed the way yesterday was done in basically ignoring the national prayer day.  About time to put this worthless holiday to pasture where it belongs.  I was so disgusted the past 8 years as War Criminal Bush made too big a deal out of this most dubious of all holidays as he kowtowed to the evangelical christian lunatic fringers.

Kudos to Great Britain for banning that slimy savage from entering their country.  Now if we could only ban the silly savage from our country and throw out the rest of his ilk we'd be well on our way to restoring our secular democracy to it's rightful place.  Hopefully they'll ban Glenn Henpecked soon as he's just as evil.  They should ban the fox and freaks channel from their fair shores as well.

Just Say No to Slimy Savage!
Does Obama have any clue as to what will help our country and economy?

It is getting very frustrating watching his lack of focus and action on our economy and jobs.

Didn't we elect him to make things better? Or am I missing something here?

Please, no excuses, just solutions and answers. CEO who can't lead...........
Colbert was brilliant. That you would label it awkward says more about the media and its understanding of the nation. It may have been awkward for you because it was so devastatingly on point.
Jobs, jobs, jobs: The big news today is the latest unemployment number. It stands at 8.9% with another 539,000 jobs shed. It's the highest unemployment number since 1983 and is up from last month's 8.5 percent.

1. Still experiencing fallout from 43's resession that started in 2007 that was kept under wraps untill the S*** hit the fan. We expected this.Speaking of economic strength: The unemployment number follows those bank stress tests released officially yesterday. Treasury says the top 19 banks need to raise about $75 billion in capital. And if they can’t, the government will give it to them, so there’s enough of a cushion.

2. This is a bitter pill that we musn't complain about. I don't have a problem with this because the banks will have oversight and accountability and tracking from this administration....it was absent from the last one.

On the other hand…: Republicans believe they're planting the seeds for future growth. The near-unanimous opposition to Obama's stimulus and spending has been an effort to regain the mantle of fiscal discipline.

3. Seeds of doubt. I hope that they remembered the instructions that Rush gave them, he advised you guys to "teach", not listen...in other words "tell" the people what to do, not listen to the people. They should be helping to clean up what they screwed up.

Speaking of Bush-Cheney…: The Cheney legacy project continues.

4. This one stinks to high heaven. I posted earlier about this draft dodging (secured location) coward.

The GOP has dispatched every living and dead body this week in efforts to "stop" the bleeding. All hands on deck tour to anyone dumb enough to buy into their retheoric....slicks, tricks and hustlers....

I would think Mrs. Edwards has more of a reason to be in the spotlight than Mrs. Palin. Why is anything she does newsworthy? Did we not get enough of her intellect during the campaign?
I don't think the Repub. party is planting anything. It's more like a scuffle for relevance. But good luck to you boys. The majority of your party is hoping the Dems. will do bad enough that the voters will forget the fact that you have nothing to offer Americans but Christian nut jobs and torture scandals.
Good luck indeed.
I know the haters will be out in force today regarding the jobs report.  I just wanted to provide a little info - just to keep the 'hate' in perspective:

The last time Unemployment was this high was 1983, 2 1/2 years into Reagan's First Term.  And yet, Reagan won a true electoral map landslide in 1984.  Crazy; but True Americans are willing to cut some slack as long as they feel like someone is taking action.  The majority of Americans are in that place right now.  I am proud to be amongst their ranks.
I see First Read got kicked off the main politics page again.  Oh, well. . .

about those budget cuts-the good news is that, although many of them were small change, who in their right mind approved a $600,000 position in the education department in PARIS!!!

Why are we spending money on a system that was made obsolete by GPS?

On the other hand, with so many federal workers costing tax payers money that businesses would never spend-four people to the the job one person would do in private industry-the best places Obama could cut were in benefits to widows of police officers slain in the line of duty, and monies to states to house illegal immigrant prisoners?  As to the latter, would it not cost more for the government to pay to house these prisoners in new federal detention facilities, which would have to be built to accomodate them?

And, by the way, when we are doing the math, if you spend $100, but don't spend $17, have you REALLY saved $17?

Sounds like my teenage daughter's math.
I think that the Oboomers will be around for a long time, 8 years!  While there will be an excitement dropoff in 2010 because Obama won't be on the top of the ticket he will get out there as campaigner in chief and help keep the Democrats in the big majority.  As Obamas's recovery works more people will see he was correct to follow FDR's example of how to fix a depression caused by the repugnant ones.

Man has fox and freaks gone off the deep end or what?  Sean Insanity has really gone off his rocker with his idiotic tree of liberty where he represented our liberties as apples?  Hmm why does Insanity equate our liberties with apples when his beloved bible says that apples are the fruit of evil.  Why does Sean Insantity hate our Freedom and Liberty so much?  Plus it's rather idiotic to rant and rave about what Obama uses for condiments on his burger?  Fox and Freaks went nuts over his choice of mustard on his burger, a texas affectation.  Why trash him for using a spicy French mustard like Dijon when our American mustard is called French's?  Why does fox and freaks hate texas so much?  Plus they accused him of murdering a cow so he could have his burger.  As I've said before Fox and Freaks is just a tv reality show of what it would be like to have a mental institution air the news.

In MSNBC We Trust!
In Fox and Freaks We Bust!

I don't think the spouses think much in general.  They've got their country clubs and their cabana boys and they just aren't that into where the money comes from.  I'm sure all sins will be forgiven, again.
Tail Wagging the Dog

You know the truth about Pelosi and Obie.
It's amazing the lying and denial that goes on within the liberal asylum.
Bob Harlee, Florida (Sent Friday, May 08, 2009 10:08 AM)

You sound so sure of yourself...tell us all how many businesses you've owned or operated that you can be so sure what we really want? I've owned and operated businesses for over 25 years and the toughest years all had names like bush as president...
. OBAMA HAS IMPLEMENTED "DIVISIVE POLITICS" ... (Sent Friday, May 08, 2009 10:21 AM)

Grow up fool
It will be interesting to see who can take credit / blame for the economy.  Lots of people are saying that Obama is causing all of these job losses.  Lots are saying that he has nothing to do with it as it is a lagging indicator.  If we have already hit bottom and start coming up, can Obama claim credit or is it the result of policies put into place months before him?  I personally think that it takes quite a while for government actions to have an impact on the economy.  I also am of the mindset that the government can only do so much and that the economy is inherently cyclical.  I think that even with no limited government interaction the economy would recover.
If Nancy Pelosi knew about the torture as it was ongoing, what exactly would she have been expected to do with that information, make a citizens arrest?

Nashville_fan (Sent Friday, May 08, 2009 10:17 AM)

You're missing the point. Pelosi has been lying about what she knew and when she knew it to score political points against the Republicans. Now Pelosi has been exposed for what she is, a bald-faced liar.
Sen. Orrin Hatch is trying to veto the appointment of Sonia Sotmayor to the Supreme Court

WHY LET HIM ?
WHY give him VETO POWER ?

Sotomayor is the logical choice for the Supreme Court
Smart, able and qualified

Apparently the Republicans and their sometimes house organ, the New Republic are trying to sabotage Sotomayor's chances

WHY BUCKLE IN TO CONSERVATIVE FRINGES ?

The Republicans said it would cause Grave harm if Obama didn't let them filibuster his Health Care initiative

SCRE 'EM

IN YOUR FACE !!

Sonia Sotomayor for Supreme Court

Feisty & Nash,

Thanks, ladies – I love the friendships I’ve made on this blog and look forward to the back and forth each day.
Claire (Sent Thursday, May 07, 2009 9:52 AM)
Claire, thanks for responding.  I am going to have to respectfully disagree with you.  Palin left ice cleat marks on an easy target to further her career.  Her tenure as mayor of Wasilla under further scrutiny, in fact revealed that she was indeed not fiscally conservative; but instead, a big believer in huge government with lots of debt.  I guess every town wants a hockey rink; but not every town can afford a hockey rink.  Also, she hired lobbyists to obtain a disproportionately larger amount of federal funds per capita.  She was an ‘issue’ candidate.  Passionate about her parenting cause; but once she got a taste for the Public Dole, she quickly became addicted to it.  Her ‘resignation’ under protest from her job was political theater.  And when she has had a chance to show true character and leadership, she has shown that she is all too willing to finance the lifestyle which she has become accustomed by tax payer dollars.  I think you are being incredibly kind to call her intelligent.  I have seen and read many transcripts of interviews she’s done both pre and post VP nomination and there really is NOTHING about her speech or language skills (for a communications major, especially) that indicate intellect. If she is competent, then, as I said yesterday – no more so than George W Bush.  I agree with you, she is engaging.  I don’t particularly care for the ‘folksy, neighborly’ brand; but she does it as well as anyone.  I liken her entire political persona to an onion.  A lot of layers, they all make you cry and when you peel back the layers to find what’s underneath – it’s more of the same and it still stinks.
PS.  Someone else mentioned how independent Alaska is yesterday.  I find that a little odd since there are over 128,000 registered Repubs and only about 77,000 registered Dems.  By any statistical ‘norming’ one concludes Alaska is indeed a ‘Red’ state.  I am not invested in the outcome one way or another.  My point was simply that she hasn’t had to gain too much consensus and meet too many varied opinions along the way, until recently.  I will say, her own Repub legislature is certainly turning up the heat on her now.  I would further surmise that she isn’t handling the pressure terribly well, but that’s just my opinion there, also, and so.
PSS.  I do not believe for a second that President Obama and Ms. California share any deeply held principles on Gay Marriage.  I have been consistently disappointed in President Obama on his selection of Rick Warren to handle the invocation, however.  I do believe he intends to support Gay Rights and will work to get Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repealed.  Further, it is up to each state to determine the laws about civil rights, and when those laws encroach upon our Federal Constitution, it is up to our Supreme Court to strike them down.

I agree with Feisty, this site is by far the best for political 'discussion' or ranting, depending on the day and topic.  I think it was Richard Washington that pointed out it is very affordable therapy for us political junkies.  Thanks, FR.
"That's the media approach to budget cuts - either lose 80 pounds TODAY or you are a failure."
____________
Nashville, you're right. I was thinking the exact same thing this morning.

"The Republicans are not the only ones paying for Bush and Cheney's sins. Everybody seems to be paying except them."
_____________
J. Ellis - I can't believe how much I despise the GOP as time goes on. Mealey mouthed whiners who should dismantle completely and bring in a new generation. I can't stomach listening to any of them. I have no idea what they're talking about most of the time.

I hope SOMEONE goes after Cheney. He's a war criminal. A war criminal. Period.
Is it Feisty Redhead or Fiesty Deadhead.

I think you can see the Pacific through that hole in her head.
Cheney is playing prevent-defense.  He know's what's coming.

Could anyone explain to me any difference between the right-wingnuts and the Taliban (without beheadings and bombs) in terms of desire to impose an ideology on others?
