First thoughts: SCOTUS shortlist?

*** The SCOTUS shortlist? According to a couple of sources in the know, there appears to be a working short list of about six names for President Obama’s Supreme Court pick. The co-frontrunners (in no particular order): Diane Wood of the 7th Circuit, Solicitor General Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor of the 2nd Circuit, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Merrick Garland of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals. Obviously, folks can slice this list all they want: Five are women; one’s Hispanic; one’s male; and all are in their late 40s or early 50s, except two (Wood, 58, and Garland, 56). Keep an eye on Napolitano. For this pick, it would be surprising if Obama named someone he didn't either know well or trust personally. Wood, Kagan, and Napolitano all fit this bill (Wood taught at the University of Chicago with Obama, and Kagan and Napolitano already have top slots in the administration). As for Napolitano, remember that she endorsed Obama early on (despite Emily’s List pressure to do otherwise). And from people familiar with the president's thinking, he's been as impressed with Napolitano as anyone in his cabinet. They click. That matters....

*** Developing conventional wisdom: In the next few weeks, the battle lines for the remainder of the president's domestic agenda will become clearer. What are we going to see? The White House's biggest challenge will be bringing together Democrats -- from the party’s left and right. The Republican Party, in fact, may end up largely irrelevant in the debates over health care, energy, and maybe event the Supreme Court. To put it another way, any political pain Obama will feel in the next few months will most likely come from Democrats. Shoot, even the interrogation issue is a problem on the left, not right. Single-payer health care is getting pushed hard on the left; cap and trade's potential shelving will upset committed Gore-ish enviros; and liberals want Obama to appoint a liberal equivalent of a Scalia to the Supreme Court, which probably won’t happen.

*** Harry and Louise aboard the O-Train? As it turns out, today’s White House focus is on health care and reducing health costs. At 11:30 am ET, Obama will meet at the White House with representatives from America’s biggest industry groups (including those who helped block health-care reform in the 1990s), who will propose cutting up to $2 trillion in health-care costs over the next 10 years. And at 12:30 pm, Obama will deliver remarks about the meeting. "We cannot continue down the same dangerous road we’ve been traveling for so many years, with costs that are out of control, because reform is not a luxury that can be postponed, but a necessity that cannot wait,” the president will say, according to excerpts from his speech that the White House released yesterday. "It is a recognition that the fictional television couple, Harry and Louise, who became the iconic faces of those who opposed health care reform in the ‘90s, desperately need health care reform in 2009. And so does America.”

Video: After getting laughs at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, Obama turns to health care reform today.

*** A Trojan horse? Paul Krugman, normally not a big fan of the Obama administration, writes that this deal to squeeze $2 trillion in health savings “is some of the best policy news I’ve heard in a long time.” But he also warns that the deal could be a Trojan horse. “What’s presumably going on here is that key interest groups have realized that health care reform is going to happen no matter what they do… In particular, [the insurance industry] will surely try to use the good will created by its stance on cost control to kill an important part of health reform: giving Americans the choice of buying into a public insurance plan as an alternative to private insurers.” The AP adds that “industry groups are trying to strike a deal now with Obama officials to help get coverage for all Americans in the hopes they can stave off legislation that would restrict their profitability in future years.”

*** Breaking news: Lawyers for jailed U.S. journalist Roxana Saberi "say she will be freed Monday after an Iranian appeals court suspended her prison term and she can leave the country immediately." Saberi had been sentenced "to eight years in prison. An appeals court heard her case on Sunday."

*** Crist to announce bid on Tuesday: Senate Republicans missed out on getting Tom Ridge to run in Pennsylvania. But they appear to have gotten their man in Florida -- Gov. Charlie Crist. Politico reports that Crist will make his bid for the Senate official on Tuesday in Tallahassee, “giving Republicans their most high-profile recruit of the 2010 election cycle.” But Crist will have to survive a primary challenge from the right from former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio. “Many Florida conservatives have begun to rally around Rubio over dissatisfaction with Crist’s moderate positions, particularly his vigorous advocacy of President Barack Obama’s stimulus package,” Politico adds.

*** Rush -- love him or hate him: Rush Limbaugh is back in today's cable chatter, courtesy of Dick Cheney and comedian Wanda Sykes. "If I had to choose in terms of being a Republican, I'd choose Rush Limbaugh," Cheney said on CBS when asked about whose vision of the GOP he'd side with -- Limbaugh’s or Colin Powell’s. "My impression was that Colin was no longer a Republican." Meanwhile, at the White House Correspondents Dinner, Sykes said that Limbaugh’s statement that he hopes Obama fails amounted to treason, adding: “Maybe Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker but he was so strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight… I hope his kidneys fail.” The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza writes that Sykes’ remarks angered some Republicans in attendance.

Video: NBC looks at controversial comments made at the Correspondents' Dinner and whether its speakers went too far.

*** Meet Diane Wood: Given our working SCOTUS shortlist, we’re going to profile the top candidates this week and next. Today we start with Diane Wood. She currently serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit in Chicago, and was appointed to that position by Bill Clinton… Knows Obama well, having served with him on the faculty at the University of Chicago Law School… Has a clear liberal and pro-choice track record on the 7th Circuit… At 58, is one of the older Supreme Court possibilities for Obama. Other bio information: Was deputy assistant attorney general in the Justice Department’s anti-trust division during the Clinton administration… Clerked for Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun and 5th Circuit Judge Irving Goldberg… Received both her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Texas at Austin… Husband Robert Sufit donated $2,250 to Obama during the ’07-’08 presidential campaign season… Her hobbies include playing the oboe and English horn, and has played in several Chicago-area orchestras.

Some one needs to stick a fork in  Dickless Cheney HE’S DONE!  And NEWSFLASH:    WE WON!  What a Pr*ck!

Get over it!  What’s the matter no one willing to go hunting with you these days Dick??? You could always take Lord Limpballs with you – judging by the size of him – you could paint a bulls eye on his a@@ and still hit him at 1000 yards!

Correspondent’s dinner was awesome – Wanda Sykes ROCKED the house!  But my favorite line of the night was ‘Rush Limball wants the President to fail…. Well I hope his kidneys fail!’

Well, the only problem for all of these Obama agenda items is paying for them. See the latest news about the tax revene shortfall the IRS is having? IRS is collecting less in taxes then they expected. Much less. So what does that mean? It means all these nice liberal programs won't get funded.
I kind of hope the president gets heart disease. I hope the liberals find that funny because we conservatives think it's an absolute riot.

The White House Correspondent’s Dinner was just wonderful!

The first lady looked amazing, the President was at ease and cracking jokes like he was at home – which he was! :)

And Wanda Sykes? She was on FIRE and on POINT!

Loved. Every. Minute. Of. It.

I LITERALLY was FALLING IN THE FLOOR laughing!

And the best part?

To hear all the media hench men and women and conservative hate mongers trying to defend RUSH LIMBAUGH of all people?

This is a man who has been telling lies and thinly veiled racist jokes for YEARS . . . and then when Wanda Sykes calls him out for being the treasonous blowhard that he is?  The media goes scurrying about trying to defend the big idiot! Priceless! Lol

P.S. The only joke that Wanda Sykes told that made me uncomfortable was the “abstinence” joke about Sarah Palin . . . but then I remembered Gov. Palin’s acceptance speech at the RNC Convention, her “pallin’ around with terrorists” line and the shameless way she used (and continues to use) her daughter’s PERSONAL LIFE for political gain, and I QUICKLY GOT OVER IT!
Krugman not a fan of the Obama administration? What's the matter Paul, Obama not spending enough for you? You'd think a guy living in NYC would understand how high government spending along with high taxes will destroy a city, like NYC, a state, like NY, and a country, like the USA. Krugman is just another welfare state liberal that thinks there is a never ending pot-of-gold that is the American taxpayer. And as usual, Krugman and his ilk are wrong.
So Roxana Saberi is being freed.

Perhaps the fact that we have a reasonable person in the White House that has made sincere efforts to engage Iran is having a positive impact on our relationship with Iran?

Meanwhile, at the White House Correspondents Dinner, Sykes said that Limbaugh’s statement that he hopes Obama fails amounted to treason, adding: “Maybe Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker but he was so strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight… I hope his kidneys fail.” The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza writes that Sykes’ remarks angered some Republicans in attendance.

In all of my years on this planet I have never heard nastier and meaner words than from the mouth of Rush Limbaugh. I see the double standard in in effect AGAIN!!!

And the G"NO"P consider it OK!!!

He and they deserve all of it. Thank you Ms. Sykes!
Maybe some horrible disease will run through the White House and the Congress. Then people like Feisty Redhead can just be rolling on the the floor laughing their behinds off.
Please take Jennifer Granholm, Michigan has had about all we can take of her.
If Dick Cheney and Rush Limbaugh are now the Republican party I quit.  Hello independents what should I know about being one?

Seems like the only smart Republican is Charlie Crist which is surprising because I don't really like him either.
Rush says he's right 99.9% of the time.

Well, nobody's perfect.
Getting to the heart of the matter with Dick Cheney will be a "Rush" to judgment because Dick's ticker ain't so good these days...Pity them both..

No early bird thoughts this morning.  Just a reflection on FR comments.  If the GOP is going to try to tie Nancy Pelosi to knowledge about torture, that is a red herring, easily discarded.  At this point it is unknown what Nancy knew.  But what is known is that the "decider" and people close to the "decider" approved torture, not Nancy Pelosi. The Dems should not back down, regardless of what Nancy knew or did not know.

Cheney picks Limbaugh over Powell.  Picking crazy emotinal conservative thinking over measured intellectual thought is where the GOP now stands. Continuing to move right will fail. Sometimes history has lessions for us to learn.  It took 16 years for the GOP to recover after Goldwater's loss. What makes it worse today is that Limbaugh was not muddying up the waters after Goldwater. It is obvious to me that the Dems want Limbaugh to be the de facto party chair.

Chuck Todd: In a couple of week you will be going to Egypt to see the pyramids and on to Normandy.  Question: Does the press ever get any time to sight see...like when the President is behind closed doors?

BTW: Healthcare will pass by Labor day.  Unless the GOP gets on board. The "Party of NO" mantra will stick and will hurt the GOP for at least 12 years. These issues are big and long lasting.
But my favorite line of the night was ‘Rush Limball wants the President to fail…. Well I hope his kidneys fail!’

------------------------------------------------------
Logic of a liberal:  hoping a president's policies fail-treasonous.  Hoping a radio talk show host dies-hysterically funny.   Would love to see the reaction of the lefties if someone wished death on a liberal.
Obie gets laughs at the White House.

Must be contageous. We laugh at him on a daily basis.
He is too funny ... and don't even get me going about Biden.
Anybody keeping track of that stimulus money Obama spent? Haven't seen a dime of it do anything but pay for some undeserved raises in teachers pay.
Oh yeah . . . how could I forget . . . President Obama "shout out" to Michael Steele and John Boehner ?

Priceless!

Wassup indeed! lol

P.S. And Wanda Sykes suggestion for a gift to foreign dignitaries . . . a momento of America . . . the State of Texas! Now THAT is a gift worth giving!

Well, ain't that a shame!

Rush Limbaugh's continued existence angers many more of us out here in the real world.  If you're pissed about the comments made about Rush, I suggest you have what he's having.

Diane Wood who currently serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit in Chicago, would be a great choice fore the Supreme Court. I'm not saying it because I'm a Chicagoan; she cracks the code word for empathy. She doesn't play so I've heard.

More troops are being sent to Afghanistan because unlike President Bush, the smallest intellect of the Military Industrial Complex, was more focused on the Black Gold. That area, the Afghan/Pakistan Border, is the place where the real terrorist who bombed the WTC are growing. Those people who want to harm us are not the whole populations in those areas. Do you understand the implications there? Pakistan has nuclear weapons. If those who want to harm us ( the jihadists), get a hold of the nukes the world is in trouble. Since jihadist think anyone who doesn't convert to Islam are INFIDELS; we should be there. They want to harm INFIDELS. That would include you, me, our children, grandchildren, and the whole world could go up in a cloud or what's that term called--  is it radiation?

Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney's roles are pathetic and antithetical to democracy. What's more important the country failing and psycho babel about another terrorist threat? One kidney failure for the $400 million man only means he'll get a kidney transplant here in or in the Black Market.
Wanda Syke's comments on Rush Limbaugh was certain to make the Repubs angry. They love to shrink back in mock indignation, while their frontman, Cheney, continues to try to discredit President Obama and his forward thinking policies.

The Republicans are a bunch of politically incestuous has-beens who continuelly reject the fact that Change Has Come to America!

BTW, President Obama was awesome at the Correspondent's Dinner. Wanda Sykes was also great, however, her kidney comment was a little over the top, but, then again, that's Wanda Sykes.
Sara Jack***, there's a difference between one comedian going after another entertainer and wishing ill-will on the President.   But, Rush will let you kiss his ring now.  You've proven you're a pure Republican.  Congrats.
Only in Obama-land is the country losing more then 500,000 jobs in a month termed a "Success". At least the government is hiring though, right Barack? That's been the plan all along though, hire people that don't produce anything (government workers) and the expense of the people that do produce something.
I think it's better to wait until Obama reveals his choice for the Supreme Court, all this specualtion just doesn't do anything but foul the air with useless rhetoric.

Kudos to Wanda Sykes for saying what so many think, that War Crminal Cheney is the biggest jerk in the world who deserves to have his kidneys fail and he's too wacked out on Oxycontin to hold a sane thought.  War Criminal Cheney sure doesn't have the class of Al Gore.  Can you imagine how ballistic the jerky boys of the bushwhacker administration would have gone had Gore trashesd them the way the War Criminal now trashes Obama?  What a despciable piece of trash the War Criminal is now trashing Powell after he had abused Powell to do his dirty work at the U.N. pushing the worthless false war in Iraq.  I say welcome to the Democratic Party Colin Powell!  We'd be honored to have you come join us.

It would be fine poetic justice if the Obama administration brings back Harry and Louise to push government health care instead of trash it.  Looks like Barack has learned from Hillary's failed attempt 16 years ago and now we are seeing the health industry make a major $2 trillion dollar concesssion in order to keep the government from stopping the freemarket freeloaders from ripping us off.  We have seen that we can never trust the private health insurance industry to cover us or to pay our claims if they think they can get off the hook by claiming previous conditions.

Prosecute War Criminals Bush and Cheney!
Go Atlantis!
For Scotus Shortlist-How about a few gay people on the list for a change, it is long over do. Their are many good and qualified gay people in Gov, and they would do a better job than some of them on the court now.
Didn't Wanda Sykes play a loud-mouthed skunk in some movie? Looks like she's still in character.

Don't worry Ken . . . we are going to stop the irresponsible and well connected people who have become wealthy by gaming the system from stealing our money and make them pay their taxes.

That should do the trick!

P.S. Great news about Roxanna Saberi . . . could this be the first finger loosening of Iran's unclenching fist? Let's hope so . . .
Aw come on...Wanda is just an entertainer!  Saying edgy funny stuff is what she does!  Get over it GOP whiners.  Just because she said it doesn't mean anyone who isn't a ditto-head wants Limbo dead or that they think he is a terrorist no matter how reprehensible his comments towards our president were.
Barack Obama is definitely our Comedian in Chief as he laid out some good zingers at that correspondent's dinner.  Too bad Sinner Sarah didn't attend as I would have loved to hear him diss her good the way he did Steele.  I can't wait for the Daily Show and Colbert Report tonight to hear how they report the dinner and to mock what new nonsense War Criminal Cheney has said.

If Florida picks that extremist trash Rubio over moderate Crist then it's proof positive that the Evil
Elephant party is nothing but a party of extremists, the same thing they falsely accused us Democrats of years ago.  Funny how time changes things huh?

Considering what extremist trash the repugnant ones spout now it's not surprising that they should be considered irrelevant in the upcoming debates over health care, torture trials, the budget, the recovery and anything else relevant to us real Americans.  Unless the arrogant ignorant party starts acting like adults instead of spoiled little brats then they should be ignored, heck they should be rejected and denounced the same way they did it unto us Democrats.

Prosecute War Crimnals Bush & Cheney!
Go Atlantis!
Hi Diane;
I missed your witty humorous threads. I'm glad you're back. However, I have to disagree with you my friend. I don't know much about economics, but I think Paul Krugman is right. Why half-step? Krugman has a new book out which in it he explains his reasoning like Japan for instance.  Wanda said I don't mind paying my fair share and neither do I if it means we can help build our economy to where it show be.

BTW: AS one of my recession busting tools I rented the book from the library.
"welfare state liberal"

Diane, I know plenty of Republicans on food stamps while I, a Democrat, work two jobs to support myself.

Turn off the radio/Fox News. Come to Maine and meet some hardworking Democrats!
Don't worry Ken . . . we are going to stop the irresponsible and well connected people who have become wealthy by gaming the system from stealing our money and make them pay their taxes.

Like Geitner, Sebelius, Rangle, and Napolitano? Those the tax cheats you talking about. All are cheaters, but all the money they owe are a drop in the bucket compared to what the deficit is currently at.

Keep trying though NF. Someone will believe your bs someday.
Please, PLEASE take Jennifer Granholm - - she's done enough damage in Michigan!!
If the party of NO continues with their obstructionism instead of sincere grown-up debate The Dems will have to just do it themsleves like Hlth care reform. Just like the Contract w/ America was allowed to pass thru Congress because majority rules. IT'S NOW THE PROGRESSIVE TIME TO DO THE RIGHT THING FOR MILLIONS OF MIDDLE CALSS AMERICANS!

*** The SCOTUS shortlist? According to a couple of sources in the know, there appears to be a working short list of about six names for President Obama’s Supreme Court pick.

It's the President's choice. I just can't get into the guessing game of the Supreme Court choice of the President. Once some is announced and news become actual? Then it's news, otherwise...

*** A Trojan horse? Paul Krugman, normally not a big fan of the Obama administration, writes that this deal to squeeze $2 trillion in health savings “is some of the best policy news I’ve heard in a long time.

Paul Krugman's opinion doesn't matter to me be it good, bad or indifferent. He is still a jealous quack. He's so full of himself that he doesn't think that his s*** stinks.

Rush -- love him or hate him: Rush Limbaugh is back in today's cable chatter, courtesy of Dick Cheney and comedian Wanda Sykes. "If I had to choose in terms of being a Republican, I'd choose Rush Limbaugh," Cheney said on CBS when asked about whose vision of the GOP he'd side with -- Limbaugh’s or Colin Powell’s. It you like racist you'll love Rush. I watched some of Morning Joe on this morning. Wanda Sikes reference to Rushes use of drugs was attacked as if she had called him a "BOY". I can't believe that you all had the nerve to print "gotta love him" in ant form, unless you agree with his teachings.

Teachings is exactly what it is. He is Racist. Wanda's "joke" overshadowed what Rush said about General Colin Powell leaving the Republican party to become a Democrat. You people have some nerve puting a comedians joke over something a racist said about a former Secretary Of State and someone that served this country's military with honor. Rush is the
equivalence of a Klan Grand Wizard, is that what he is to some of you all?

Wanda Sykes did a great job, and was hilariously funny. And everything she said was true, especially what she said about Boss Limbaugh and his drug addiction. And Cheney-"if he wishes our country fails, I hope his kidneys fail too." "because thats what he deserves for bing so UNPATRIOTIC.
Hey Nashville

Wanda Sykes is a D list comedian and her jokes are as funny as David Feherty's one about Pelosi, Reid and Bin Laden.

Best joke of the night was John Boehner being a person of color.

***************************************************** Stealing our money?????? If I make $10.00 selling a product of my making, then its your money?? Corporations and individuals, you included; try to figure out the best way to pay the least taxes possible. You want to stop it; go to a flat tax and that way you wont need 10,000 pages of a code. This is not stealing, its called being knowledgable about the rules and not just skimming through them. Dont hate because your mad because you didnt game the system. I pay back every year but you dont see me crying about people gaming the system. BTW: this wont pass through Congress because 99% of them game the tax code too. Hell they help to keep it in place.
Obie

Thanks for allowing us one photo from the fly-over-NY gaffe.

It looks like Air Force One is gonna drop bombs on the Statue of Liberty.

Not to worry, Obie and company haven't hit a target yet. Their only success is failure.
Hey, how 'bout a shot out to homeboy Micheal Steele? he finally up for someone, our President!

Right on homeboy. Now, since that's one of the first things he got right. Maybe he'll get enlightened like  Joe the "dumber plumber" and leave the party.
Obama's budget deficit keeps balloning - the government is now borrowing 50 cents for every dollar it spends. Try running your business on those kind of terms and see what happens. Now were up to a $1.8T deficit for the YEAR!

lol Ken . . . I'll be here all week buddy . . . I'll keep my eye on the  BILLIONS OF DOLLARS  in the off shore accounts . . . and I'll let you keep up with the undocumented house keepers, 'kay? :)

P.S. To Alan, NJ . . . for a D list comedian . . . seems like Wanda Sykes got an A+ for having the balls to tell the TRUTH about Rush Limbaugh . . . even as the so called "leaders" of the Republican Party and the "free press" continue to tip toe around his big head like he is some sort of sacred cow. . . oh wait, I guess he is! lol
My hope is that President Obama picks someone for SCOTUS that is so far from the so called short list that it is jaw dropping. The media gossips would be put in their place for sure.

Wanda Sykes was entertaining, as was The President. I enjoyed his jokes more than hers. That said, I was pleased that she went after that big blowhard Limbaugh. She showed she, unlike others, are not afraid of him. We need more like her to stand up to those creeps.

Crist is a good choice in FLA. The one thing the Repubs don't need is more conservatives. Those conservatives are what is bringing their party down right now. They need more moderates like Crist.

It is great that Roxana Saberi is free. There was likely a ton of behind the scenes negotiation between the US and Iran to make it happen.

Colin Powell is a smart man and should have been considered for the head of the GOP in the first place. One can but wonder if he would accept such a position. Here is a man who had a long and distinguished career serving his country in the military and than as Secretary of State, albeit in a failed Administration, and now is retired. He may simply be enjoying retirement and not interested in such a position as RNC President.

I would have liked to have seen Gen. Powell run for president but now he is tainted by the Bush connections and so it wouldn't be a good idea any more. Too bad as he could have been a good one.
I am a Florida Democrat but might vote for Crist in the primary just to keep Rubio out.
Another day in Obamaland, another day closer to bankrupcy for the country.
jesse St.Paul Minnesota

Don't remember anybody using language like that here jesse.  Of course if you want to go and trawl the hate sites I'm sure you'll find waht you're looking for.  Nothing like a bit of identity politics to get the juices flowing.
