Steele: Obama not vetted because...

From NBC's Mark Murray
At some point, are Republicans going to start demanding that RNC Chairman Michael Steele no longer guest-host Bill Bennett's radio's show?

Subbing for Bennett again, Steele seemed to suggest that Barack Obama won the Democratic nomination and the presidential contest because he's black -- and because the media didn't vet him due to the color of his skin.

According to the folks at the liberal-leaning Think Progress blog, Steele said this:

"The problem that we have with this president is we don’t know him. He was not vetted, folks... He was not vetted, because the press fell in love with the black man running for the office. 'Oh gee, wouldn’t it be neat to do that? Gee, wouldn’t it make all of our liberal guilt just go away? We can continue to ride around in our limousines and feel so lucky to be alive in an America with a black president.' Okay that’s wonderful, great scenario, nice backdrop. But what does he stand for? What does he believe?"

He then said Republicans made a mistake by not seizing on Obama's ties to the controversial Jeremiah Wright. "And that's why I keep going to back the point -- the missed opportunity was dissecting and understanding Rev. Wright," Steele said.

Every once in a while, I take the time to read the political blogs around and it never seizes to amaze me how many people still do not get it. I am a realist and I know by just calling myself that, I instantly eliminated conservatives to read on and the liberals to get curious. The realty of it all is that, this is what we have become. The stubborn, selfish, unapologetic society who cares less of anything beyond our line of sight. The days when selfishness was a bad stigma is gone. Greed for the sake of “my” family is forgiven and to some extent encouraged.
Look, Obama is without question an optimist who believes in the best of us, of course some people would say he intends to destroy this country from birth, but the reality of it is that we have become too lazy to change. Imagine what we will have to do to meet that call of change. Liberals go along and hope it turns out well because that is just typical “mutual respect” you give to someone who claims to have a good idea. The conservatives want to curl up and shed their skin at the thought of new ideas because it will require some brain function to accept fresh perspective. Then throw in the internet where opinions and blogs are unsanitized, you get people proudly and boldly talking incoherently visa vie out of their ass.
This society has seized to make effort in thoughtfulness, and the consequence of that is yet to come. We can just as easily learn the thoughtfulness of Washington, Jefferson and Madison days through close emulation but we have chosen to never be regarded as intelligent as they were and we make no apologies for that shortcoming. I am sure the definition of “pursuit of happiness” was clearer to society in 1700s than it is to us today.
We have accepted that this is who and what we are and as long as nobody expects more from us, a good portion of our fellow citizens have refused to grow up intellectually.
I have always felt people learn things from history and historical facts, that is why we have role models and used phrases as “ when I grow up I would like to be”. All that has changed. Selfishness is supreme. Everything should be about me - my opinion, my family, my choice and if you want me to agree with you, then you HAVE to agree with me first. Nobody likes the way things are right now. The Conservatives hate the liberals and vice versa. Along the way, we lost the meaning and definition of what and who we are. Dissent is not just disagreeing with you, it also means a different opinion. Patriotism is not just loving your country but it also means understanding your countrymen. Respect is not only a lip service but also practicable. As this decay continues, in the end what we have is a slow evolution into a horrible society but wait! We are too bone headed to see it and we have become too impatient and easily dismiss the signs. To the conservatives, if God existed, it would have started over and to the liberals, if God existed, it would have started over. How about them apples? Just to put things in perspective, I support Obama or ANYONE else who will be thoughtful enough to set up a program that will get me farther away from one illness to bankruptcy, because if you try to make me see Limbaugh’s point, it just reminds me that he can afford to treat a bad case of stupidity than most of his fans.  Goodluck if you need it.
Before we get outraged, let's dial it down and step back for a second.  Would a first-term senator who was white have even been competitive for the nomination?  Let's ask ourselves honestly that question.
Didn't Republicans 'VET' Obama by deciding he was a 'secret Muslim' ?
I remember a woman at a McCain rally who said he was an 'Arab'

In many respects, John McCain ran an honorable campaign
Imagine the campaign Newt Gingrich or Tom Tancredo might have run

I'm betting they uphold Prop 8
But, I HOPE NOT

From MyDD:

'..Prop 8 Decision Tuesday
by Lucas O'Connor, Fri May 22, 2009 at 01:46:15 PM EST

It's official. The California Supreme Court will rule on Proposition 8 on Tuesday at 10am.

There are Day of Decision actions being organized across the state and around the country no matter what the court rules (find an event here) and you can get email alerts from Courage Campaign and/or have CREDO text the decision to your phone by texting "DECISION" to 27336. All of which is followed up on May 30 with Meet in the Middle for Equality in Fresno and sponsored by more than 70 organizations. All of which adds up to yes, Prop 8 has proven to be one of the best organizing points in recent decades for the state of California. It's been a perfect storm of tactical and technological innovation from facebook and text messaging plus orgs like Courage Campaign and CREDO meeting resurgent activist energy and experience coming from the issue and the '08 presidential campaign legacy.

Plus there's the whole human dignity and equality angle. Over at Calitics, you can check out the full rundown of what the SC is dealing with, including the central issue:

The central argument advanced by the petitioners is that Proposition 8 oversteps the power of the people to amend the Constitution. This power is limited by Article XVIII of the California Constitution, and extends only to making changes that are within the lines of the existing Constitution. Changes that affect the underlying principles on which the Constitution is based are referred to as "revisions." A valid constitutional revision must undergo a rigorous and deliberative process and it cannot be approved through the initiative process.

So as a whole lot of people spend the long weekend freaking out about the future of their marriages, it's important to remember that the question at hand is a relatively narrow process question, not really a ruling on marriage equality overall. Either way, national and state organizations are already laying the groundwork to bring marriage equality back to the ballot in either 2010 or 2012- if necessary.

Regardless, we're goin for a ride now...'
Wow, are we sure this guy is not a mole for the democratic party because he is real good at making republican's look like idiots.
Open Mouth, Insert Foot!  One would think that idiot steele would get tired of the constant taste of toejam in his mouth, but he must be a masochist.  What a crock of bile that idiot steele would say that President Obama wasn't vetted.  So when did the repugnant ones vet McNasty or that Wicked Witch of Wasilla?

The repugnant ones amde a mistake not trying to tie Obama to the Reverend Wright, really?  I sure remember all the huffing and puffing by the crybabies about Wright for a long time, I guess they were supposed to talk about that and that only for months huh?

Hey republic facist party did you clowns ever vet idiot steele?  Ofcourse you didn't, you voted for him to be RNC Chair because he was black and you were trying to cash in on black is beautiful in current politics.

If idiot steele doesn't know what President Obama stands for then it's because he hasn't been paying attention.  Thanks idiot steele for showing Mainstream America what a bunch of nutjobs you people are.

The republic facist party is caught in a steele trap!
I know President Obama.  Who the hell are you?
Micheal Steele
Has he sold his soul? No, He has none. They don't want Micheal if Micheal really wants to be cool he leave. Come back  home Micheal you can't continue to be a zombie. You need soul.

<>>>>>>>><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

It's time to close UnLiberty University as they have violated federal antidiscrimination laws by discriminating against the Democratic Party Club.  This unholy bible school founded by that deadbeat falwell freak shows us just how intolerant the evangelical christian lunatic fringe is.  I'm surprised that any Democrat would attend such a pathetic excuse of higher learning in the first place and any parent who sends their kids to this sordid school must hate their kids.

Hi Eric,
Happy Memorial Day Eric, this article fits in to your narrative. Enjoy

Sara Robinson:The Far Right's First 100 days Getting More Extreme Everyday. http://www.alternet.org

Can you even get the taste of shoe out of your mouth anymore Mr. Steele?

Yeah right, it's because he was black. That's why Jesse Jackson and Alan Keyes had such successful runs.

And to another point. Jeremiah Wright has not been even close to the White House. He has pretty much dropped of the face of the earth since President Obama was nominated as the Democratic candidate.  That's alot less we can say than any other GOP President and hateful Racists and Sexists like Jerry Falwell, and Pat Robertson
Never vetted? Seriously????? Every association Obama has ever had, no matter how tenuous, was put under a microscope and talked about ad-nauseum throughout the entire campaign. How in the world can someone say that Obama was never vetted with a straight face?

And his point about Wright doesn't even make sense - that was front page news for MONTHS! Just because it didn't end Obama's campaign... just because most voters didn't care... doesn't mean that it wasn't discussed.

Michael Steele is a straight up LIAR. Not to mention that Steele, aka Mr. "Bling bling, hip-hop, holla-back," has made more shameless appeals to race in his 100 days than Obama ever has.
Steele just joined the crazy club with Limbaugh and Cheney. This is a great example of comments posted earlier today.  The GOP is clueless about how to deal with our President.  Steele is so crazy...nobody is listening...not even other Republicans.
This ought to be good.......

Can anyone explain to me what this idiot is doing in the RNC chairman position. Is it guilt? Stupidity? Ignorance? What a F'n moron.

I've been around for a while now and follow politics closely. Still to this day, it amazes me that hard right conservative neocon rethuglicans are unable to see the reality that the majority of the rest of us see. They actually believe if they say something enough it will eventually be true. How sad for them and how fortunate for the rest of us and our great nation.

Happy Memorial Day to all of my favorite posters.
oh, please.
Many mock these kinds of news-stories, but I would challenge the many folks (blacks, hispanics...etc) who mostly vote democratic while holding socially conservative or Christian viewpoints....arene't you tired of blank-check voting for a party that offends your biblical convictions?  Isn't it time you tell the Dem party that it's radical pro-abortion and pro-gay and pro-Hollywood cultural bent won't cut it for you and you demand change?  I'm not suggesting you need to be republican, but certainly isn't it time to tell the Dem party that they're rudderless moral agenda is unacceptable.  By the way, just knowing the one of abortion's founders, Margaret Sanger of Planned Parenthood, was a blatant racist, ought to bother you enough.
Convictions--where are they? (Sent Friday, May 22, 2009 1:31 PM)
******************************************************
It's called seperation of church and state. This country was founded on it. What is so difficult to understand about that? And there is nothing "radical" about caring about every American regardless of race, sexual orientation or stance on abortion. Minorities understand that after enduring years of intolerance like you have towards the gay community and believers in pro-choice. It is the Republican party that needs to be rid of people like you. Maybe then they can branch out past Appalachia.

BECAUSE HE'S BLACK --- THAT WRONG!

OBAMA WAS ELECTED FOR THREE REASONS:

1.)  BLACKS VOTED 99.9% FOR OBAMA INSTEAD OF THEIR USUAL 95% FOR THE DEMOCRAT.

2.)   WHITE MALES VOTED IN THE MAJORITY FOR OBAMA OUT OF SOCIAL GUILT.

3.)  THE LIBERAL MEDIA PUSHED ITS AFFIRMATIVE ACTION ELECTION AGENDA TO HELP OBAMA.

DOES THIS MEAN OBAMA WAS ELECTED BECAUSE OF RACE?
This from the party that ran Sarah Palin for VP.  Vetting anyone???

By the way Michael, as long as you want to bring race into this, don't you realize *you* were picked for the color of *your* skin, so your party wouldn't look racist when it attacked the President?

Now, shut up and go bring more hip hop attitude to your party.  And remember to apologize to Rush on your way out.
What can a person say to respond to ignorance.  Does Michael Steele ever think before he speaks?  He should try it.  Pres Obama was fully vetted and the media (despite right wing claims) sliced and diced every move and every word; we watched, we listened, we read, we weighed the facts and we voted.  I did NOT vote for Pres Obama because he was black, I voted for him because of his concept for America's future and because he is intelligent; I read both his books which impressed me with his scope of thought and knowledge.  I voted for him because I felt he was the best person to be president.
Speaking of the poorly misinformed...Michael Steel just keeps opening his fly trap. Gracious...with friends like Steel in the party, the GOP doesn't need too much help from us lefties.

What a nice sport he's being, keep opening that fly trap Michael. Now they will use the race card. The President wasn't vetted "because" he is black? Where are the righters when you need them? This man is gastly. oh righters, where are you hiding?
The republic facist party is caught in a steele trap! Eric, Salinas, CA (Sent Friday, May 22, 2009 2:19 PM)

That's a pretty catchy name for them  ;)

P.S.  Have a good memorial day
"Before we get outraged, let's dial it down and step back for a second.  Would a first-term senator who was white have even been competitive for the nomination?  Let's ask ourselves honestly that question."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

That would all depend on his character, intellect, ability to inspire and his ability to lead. Obama possessed all of those qualities in abundance (according to POLLS). So you can pretend like those had absolutely nothing to do with all the support he received, and instead just make it about race, but that would not accurately reflect what was in the hearts and minds of the voters.
Before we get outraged, let's dial it down and step back for a second.  Would a first-term senator who was white have even been competitive for the nomination?  Let's ask ourselves honestly that question.
EEOC (Sent Friday, May 22, 2009 2:12 PM)

Dear EE: I actually have thought about that question before, and I believe that a white first-term senator COULD have been competitive if they espoused the same goals and aspirations as Barack Obama did.
I think Steele is getting on everyone's nerves including the media. Why didn't he run, I wonder?
LIBERAL MEDIA DID NOT WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT OBAMA:

My gracious little pea brain...do you honestly believe what you've posed? Take a good look at the posting and tell me if what you posted makes sense? My head is still buzzing...get back to Fox noise where they accept such nonsense.
To: C, in PA (Sent Friday, May 22, 2009 2:09 PM)

I really liked your post and completely agree with most of it. Very thoughtful, insightful and reflective.

Just one thing to point out. You used the word seizes or seized a couple of times and I think the correct word should have been "ceases" or "ceased". No disrespect intended but it distracted me slightly from an otherwise very well written and thought out post. Thank you
Let us all get over it. Obama won fair and
square  and deseves some respect. Micheal steele
is an idiot and is being used. Please let us all
bet behind our president. Enough!
EEOC,

Does JFK ring a bell.

Now you have to ask yourself seriously, are you a bigot?
Has anyone listened to the limpbag dial today?  I have not but this sure seems like something the gasbag would spew.  I was dumb enough to catch the insane hanity hour last night to cath the part (and it was extremely amuzing) when Harldo said can I get 30 seconds here!  He was being interupted so much you could see the anger on his face over it! These people are bent on hate, will not listen and will only interupt you to the point of Haroldo's comment last night.  steel's comments seem to follow the mantra of limpbag, insane hanity, o'really, coulter the it, and of course the chief fear mongerer himself cheney. The Repuke party is for one thing PARTY FIRST country second!
I remember Obama's relationship with Steele was not brought...otherwise Obama had lost in the primaries itself....Isn't what you mean (Hollow) Steele...
No...Michael Steele....Hillary Clinton and Fox News vetted Obama during the Campaign for the rest of the country to watch.
Pot... meet kettle.  You're both black, and it played a role in both of you being elected to your recent offices.  I'd say however that Obama was vetted much more thoroughly in his marathon run against Hillary than Steele was before being elected chair of the RNC
LIBERAL MEDIA DID NOT WANT THE TRUTH ABOUT OBAMA (Sent Friday, May 22, 2009 2:24 PM)

I always enjoy reading posts from Mr. Caps Lock Guy.  Makes me wonder what he does for a living, and where he comes up with this stuff.  Hilarious!
OK, now Steeless in Officially a member of the RepubliKLAN Party.....race baiting, the highest form of hypocricy...and Michael, how does this help you get the RepubliKLAN Non-Party back on track.  You do indeed have a distinguished position as being a Black leader of the RepubliKLANs!

While you're at it Michael, please remove me from whatever list your Non-Party is working.  First, the letter soliticing donation (I returned it sans $, but with a few suggestions), and then a Robocall from Rep Lamar Smith to join in some Teletown Hall!

STOP IT!

Michael, please STFU!
Michael Steele got to where he is today because of President Obama. He does not have much to say at all! If he was not elected he would not be known or recognized as a candidate for the position he occupies now! Mr. Steele you need to be quiet and be grateful for the foundation President Obama has laid for the black people.
At least Michael won't have to apologize to Rush again. Now excuse me but I have to get in my limosine and drive out to the arugala festival.

And no, I didn't vote for Barack to assuage my white guilt. I just don't like bigots.
Is this guy for real?  Seriously, is he secretly in the employ the Democrats?  The man is a joke.  The fact he is the head of the Republican Party, on paper anyway, is sad.  Really sad.
It's so nice of Mr. Steele and the other Racists on this thread to suggest that I, a white woman, only voted for Obama because he's black and to "assuage my limousine liberal guilt."  Yup.  I don't have a thought in my head and I don't take my vote seriously.  I only voted the way I did because I'm stupid and feel guilty or think it'd be cool to have a black President.

Do you guys project much or what?  Do you have any idea how INCREDIBLY racist you are, not to mention insulting as hell to everyone who doesn't think and act like you?  I really wish you lunatics would disappear.  Move to the Libertarian paradise of Somalia.  I'm sure you'll be much happier there.
So, then, Mr. Steele ... are you saying that republicans didn't vet YOU, either, because of YOUR skin color?

And if no one "vets" African Americans, then what's YOUR problem?

More disgusting, racist rhetoric from Michael Steele. (The fact that Steele is a black man doesn't excuse his race-baiting remarks.) Is ugly characterization and fear mongering the best the RNC chairman can come up with? Digging up Reverend Wright? Recently, Steele stated that, although his loose talk may seem like gaffes, they are actually part of a larger strategy. If Steele's strategy is to prove that he is not so black as to disrespect and diminish the election of the first black President of the United States, the polls show that his strategy is failing.

The RNC Chairman is the poster child for the failure of the Republican Party. The party of mostly old, white, southern men who dream of restoring America to days gone by has become irrelevent. The party that cleverly chose a black RNC chairman has wound up with a embarrassment, atoken, and an incompetent. Michael Steele is further isolating hard core conservatives by reducing the appeal of the Republican Party to moderates or right leaning Democrats.

Keep talking, Mr. Steele, your making a fool of yourself and you are doing the work of the Democratic Party for them.
What level will Steele stoop to next? He and the GOP have totally lost it. Not vetted?? He was drug through the coals by the republicans.
Everyday the republicans continue to prove their stupidity, arrogance and total lack of leadership.
And, everyday the media gives these idiots the headlines. But that is good as don't believe they realize that they are aiding in the destruction of the republican party. So media, republicans, keep it up. We will just sit back and wait until you are no more.
Palin was investigated more in two weeks by the MSM than Obama was in 6 months.
I think that Michael Steele was himself not vetted property by the RNS but rather elected to his chairmanship because HE Is BLACK!

This man is not capable of doing what the GOPers need to do, reorganize and more more to the middle. His idea of a winning ticket is probably Romney-Palinl,lol

Keep up the good sabatage Mr, Steele!
Mr.Steele look in a mirror and tell me what color the person you see in that mirror is? Was that person vetted because of the color of his skin or idealogy?

I am white, male and Catholic. In some areas I am conservative and in others liberal. I lean more liberal on most issues. I can tell you that I DID NOT vote for President Obama because of his race nor would I have voted against him because of it. I am past that kind of crap and believe most Americans are. If you believe your party is not racist look around. Have you ever heard the term "token black". Look in the mirror, sir, and that is what you might see. Of course it is everybody's fault but the Republicans that they lost and continue to lose elections. They just can't admit that people want change, voted for change, and are getting what we wanted. In the past I voted for Republicans because I didn't like my party's candidate and will in the future if it happens again. I believe most people do the same thing.

Because I like you and want you to succeed I suggest you move your party toward the center and stop listenig to jerks like Limbaugh and Cheney. If you don't your party will remain small and irrelevant.
Yes, the Jeremiah Wright story had some traction but ONLY because the Hillary crowd brought it up.  BUT, the important detail which the media and everyone allowed to pass was Obama's blatant lie that he didn't know about Wright's radical ideas until then.  That takes a ridiculous amount of gulliblity to believe--that a man who Obama "could no more disassociate from than the black community itsefl", and who was a father figure to Obama...and yet we're to believe that Obama had never heard her talk about or preach about Wright's anti-American or anti-Jewish venom????????  Where was media investigative reporting for that lie???   If Palin had made such a statement, the media would've been to Anchorage in 2 seconds.  It's kind of like Obama's statement that "Bill Ayers is just a guy in my neighborhood".  Those are the things that make many feel he wasn't properly vetted (by todays' vetting standards).

come out of the fishbowl bub...

Palin and Obama were under the same scrutiny.

Palin for about 3 months, Obama for 2 years and counting.

Mr. Steele, I guess you can now stop calling Obama's policies socialistic since you don't know what he stands for or what he believes in.
I did NOT vote for Pres Obama because he was black, I voted for him because of his concept for America's future and because he is intelligent; I read both his books which impressed me with his scope of thought and knowledge.  I voted for him because I felt he was the best person to be president. EEOC,

Does JFK ring a bell.

Now you have to ask yourself seriously, are you a bigot?
---------------------------------------------------
JFK had three terms  in the House and had been a Senator for eight years before he ran for President.  He also commanded a Navy ship; he had leadership experience, something the President did not.   So the JFK/Obama experience parallel doesn't really fly.

Perhaps Eric Holder was right.  We must be a nation of cowards, because one can't even ask a reasonable question without being accused of being a bigot.  I voted for Obama, but I'm certainly not blind to the fact that his race was a neutralizer to his inexperience.  Pretty interesting that most of you think Obama's election had NOTHING to do with the color of his skin but Steele's election had EVERYTHING to do with the color of his skin.
Jus wait till he says he s sorry like he did to Rush & any other fat balding whit man he stands before.  I can only imagine that every black man in America thinks Steele is the ultimate Uncle Tom. Surely they have no repsect for him.  It's okay to have political differences, but this guy is just plain jealous of Obama or he just wants to be white.
So I guess the two years between when he stated he was going to run for the nomination and the time he actually took office don't count for squat? These republican talking points are so outdated and overused; just like of the stale ideas you guys offer and the tactics you use; fear and hate.

We’re American and we’re not buying…
I'd say however that Obama was vetted much more thoroughly in his marathon run against Hillary than Steele was before being elected chair of the RNC

Uh...well....duh, Chip, it's a little bit more significant of a job.
WTF??? Oh, I get it....Nipsy Russell wasn't available. So Bro' Steele was the best the GOP could do? It's clear enuff now!
