WH: Sotomayor used poor word choice

Posted: Friday, May 29, 2009 3:57 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Chuck Todd
Just now at the press briefing, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that Judge Sonia Sotomayor used a "poor" choice of words in 2001, when she suggested a Latina would reach a better conclusion than a white male.

Asked how he knew she would say she chose her words poorly, Gibbs simply said that he's talked to people who have talked to her. He would not elaborate.

But clearly, we should expect Sotomayor to -- at some point -- say this herself, perhaps to members of the Senate next week and later at her confirmation hearing.

DON"T BACK OFF Sonia.  You did NOT use a poor choice of words, the idiots trying to use those words against you are using a poor choice of . . . well, intelligence.  What you said was right on the money and should be repeated at your confirmation hearings.  Not just what the idiots are using but the entire statement within context.
context, context, context, context. does no one understand the need to discuss any "quote" in its CONTEXT !!!!!!!! Without context Jefferson and Lincoln can be made to sound like racists.
It's 'BITTER' all over again.

President Obama's words were parsed, and taken out of context then, and so are Judge Sotomayor's.

Didn't work then.... won't work now.

Keep on alienating minorities you dummies.
People have to got stop taking the quote out of context...or better yet...stop misquoting her.
I guess when it comes down to it, was it the best way to phrase it??  No

People are going to stop reading when you put "better" before "than a white male" even thought the rest of the sentence basically says "taking A. B. & C. into consideration.

It's like a guy getting offended when a woman says "you have no idea what it's like to go through child labor"

So could she have phrased it more delicately...Yes.

Are people absolutely moronic for not reading the whole meaning behind it?  Yes.

Was she truthful in what she said??  Yes.

We get it.  We get the game rush and newt is playing... The Graba$$ is over now guys, time to get back to work and put america together...time to stop pushing books and airtime for your radio talk shows and roll up your sleeves.

I will lose major respect if she backs down on this.  What a crock.  The context of what she said is germane and appropriate and NO different than the context of Alito's own statements.  What a Crock!

--------

In other news, anyone notice how this has completely taken the heat off Pelosi?  President Obama is a political genius when you remember how well he rolled out his endorsements/message last year to the present.
I will be anxious to hear her comment although having read the entire statement, I do not see a problem with it; Justice Alito and probably others have made similar remarks.  When a person is at those types of functions, words are used which can easily be misinterpreted when taken out of context as they have been by so many.

Stephen Howell, Belle Vista Arkansas.  Your remarks on an earlier post were appreciated by this democrat.  An intelligent post and obviously you are concerned about your party and our country.  You are exactly right, it is time for both parties to stop the bickering and work together to fix this mess and for change.  Thanks for taking time to tell us your thoughts.
Let's just see republicans take her to task for her poor word choice.  Then we'll trot out a few oldies but goodies from the Bush administration, like those 16 poorly chosen words that underpinned the war in Iraq, or the part about being greeted as liberators, or the part about 6 days, 6 weeks, doubt 6 months.

Or, the United States doesn't torture.  (That one is sort of like saying guns don't kill.)

Let he (or she) who is without poorly chosen words cast the first vowel.
Perhaps her word choice could have been better. But, I must say that I don't think there's anything wrong with stating that your background is quite different from the norm.

Seriously...Newt Gingrich is only angry because he's a charter member of the "rich, old and selfish, white guy association"...I mean, was it just ME or did anyone ELSE notice that the Republican Convention looked like a VIAGRA advertisement.

I went to four Obama rallies (lived in Denver at the time), and I saw people there of every size, age, color and gender. It was certainly a far cry from the cigar smokin' good ol' boy club.

After all of the name-calling, mud-slinging and even attempting to "rename" the Democratic Party the Republicans have engaged in over the past year...NOW they want to stand up for politically correct terminology?

Sheesh, these people need to sit in the corner for a while.
What I would like to see from the media or the white house is a list of her Accomplishments or landmark cases where she has made the tough (but legal) decision instead of the popular one.  Somebody should make the case for her.  The overwhelming amount of information america has been given is racially charged spun negatively by the right and then the left is forced to come to her defense.

Would someone just make the case for her?  If she truly is the best choice for our nations highest court then it shouldn't be that difficult.  The folks who support her need to dispense with vaugue compliments and make an effort to paint her in a very specific and very positive light.

You can't expect people just to go along with the nomination because Obama said she is great.  He has an agenda just every other person in Washington.  Any one with any substance between their ears should be able recognize that and has any right to question that agenda.

While I agree with your sentiment you should probably choose two different Former presidents since both Jefferson and Lincoln were most certainly racists (at least in part).
Stephen Howell, Belle Vista Arkansas - I second Jody, Iowa's words.

THANK YOU, Stephen, for sharing your heartfelt thoughts.  I wish the Republicans in leadership positions would take your concerns to heart.  But, if and when you just can't take their arrogance any more, there's always room for you here under the Big Tent.
Feisty:

I am so proud of our President and love him too. At least we have smart logical reasoning in the white house now. Not to worry I will be out here whenever time permits me to do so. Sometime I have to leave, but always come back.

How do you like this smut and insulting sick S.O.B. donor letter. This is the exact problem that the party has already and he's just sealed their fate.

I am going to keep a copy of this one for future references. You keep on kicking their asses, we've got your back!
Why does MSM continue to cover and employ (Pat Buchanan) the Bigotry of the Republican Party? Referring to a woman's menstral

Next these Bastards will talk about having concentration camps for the following:

Democrats
Blacks
Women (unless you work for Fox News, Pretend to be dumb  or your name is Michelle Bachman)
Hispanics/Latinos
Gays

Depends on which "Republican" convention you saw.  If you were at Ron Paul's counter-convention in Minneapolis it most certainly did not look like a Viagra commcercial.  It did look several thousand young, educated, and liberty loving activists.  Folks need to stop painting republicanism with the brush of the neo-con...conservatism isn't dead it just needs new blood.
Sheesh, these people need to sit in the corner for a while.

Is racial identity for a judge a value added quality or a form of racism?

I hope you realize that Bill Clinton and his Secretary of State Madeline Albright put sanctions on Iraq that directly contributed to the deaths of an Estimated 500,000 Iraqi's.  Not mention the bloodshed (and genocide) they sponsored in the Balkans, and Kosovo.  In each case both insisted they made right the right decision, and the benfits of each campaign outwieghed the cost in human life...which is easy to say because of the human life being spent weren't American Voters.

America needs to wake up and realize that at the core Bush was just another Clinton and Obama is just another Bush   Jonathan Flint, MI (Sent Friday, May 29, 2009 12:35 PM)

Actually that was U.N. Resolution 661 adopted during Bush seniors years and the first Gulf War.  Resolution 667 strengthened those sanctions and caused most of the damage starting in early 1991.

The Sanctions weren't totally lifted until right before we invaded in 2003.

BTW, who was majorly responsible for these sanctions and the drafting of tougher sanctions of Iraq?

Secretary of Defense at the time ~ Dick Cheney

Nice try, thanks for playing.

Poor choice but she meant it.
I read the quote in it's entire context, and still the statement would be considered racist in today's society. I say this simply in the sense that if a white person spoke about his white background giving leading him to better decisions on the bench, well, we all know what would happen to that person.

Personally, I have no real problems with what she said. I have a problem with our hyper-racial political correctness that at time would condemn one race and applaud another race for saying the exact same thing. That's not the type of color blind society that Martin Luther King called for.

I'm certain that Scalia's italian background leads him a conservative nature on social issues. I believe that Sotomayor's hispanic background leads her to be conservative on social issues, and more strident in ending discrimination of minorities.
Michelle, military wife in Germany---VIAGRA advertisement would have been a step up for the Repuke Convention!  To me, it looked like an upscale Klan meeting....no pointed hoods! LOL

The cameras had a hard time trying to find any faces of color to focus on....  maybe 10 or less! GHEEZE

"Let's hope that the key conferences aren't when she's menstruating or something, or just before she's going to menstruate."

From Washington Monthly:

'...LEAVE IT TO LIDDY....
And here I thought Tom Tancredo, Newt Gingrich, and Rush Limbaugh would be the most offensive conservative critics of Sonia Sotomayor. How could I forget this clown?

Yesterday on his radio show, conservative host G. Gordon Liddy continued the right wing's all-out assault on Judge Sonia Sotomayor. [...]

"I understand that they found out today that Miss Sotomayor is a member of La Raza, which means in illegal alien, 'the race.' And that should not surprise anyone because she's already on record with a number of racist comments." [...]

"Let's hope that the key conferences aren't when she's menstruating or something, or just before she's going to menstruate. That would really be bad. Lord knows what we would get then."

So, according to this prominent conservative media personality, the Spanish language is synonymous with "illegal alien," and women are, by nature, poorly suited to serving as justices.

I'm not sure what I expected, exactly, from the right during this confirmation process. It was easy to imagine them attacking Sotomayor, but I more or less assumed they'd be subtle. The racist and misogynistic attitudes would be there, I assumed, but they would be vague, indirect, and phrased in a way to make deniability plausible.

But here we are, just a few days after Sotomayor's introduction, and some corners of the right just can't seem to help themselves. They know it's hateful, they know it's offensive, they even know it's likely to do long-term damage to their party.

And yet, they do it anyway. It's like a sickness...'

You're missing the point...
Clinton very much Endorsed these sanctions while people in Iraq were being most effected during his presidency (under his world police watch) and furthermore his SOS claimed they were good and beneficial...So I guess i could revise the statement that each president has copied the others Interventionist Foreign Policy without fail since Truman (With the possible exception of Jimmy Carter).  Clinton was just another Bush Sr. and Bush Jr. was no better than Clinton and Obama is no better than Bush Jr...so and so forth.

Government is expanding and Liberties are shrinking and I don't care if the letter by the Pres. name is a "d" or an "r" or if he can or can't string three words together eloquently, or if you think he is or isn't acting logically we have had nothing but criminals in the White House since Calvin Coolidge.

Get your nose out the Liberal/Neo-Con Information Super Highway and read some history books.

Love watching the WH stumble all over themselves with this. What a bunch of amateurs.
It would certainly help if the press didn't make such a big deal out of words taken out of context.  They know better, but just love the controversy it stirs up.  A little more honestly on the part of the MSM would be appreciated.
Jonathan Flint, MI ---
Agree with you 100%. I am not republican, but love the Ron Paul movement. If libertarians can get the right messenger i think we will be a strong presence in 2012! We may be the viable third party option.
Obviously Justice Sotomayor would have used different wording to explain the obvious reality that everyone brings their own life experiences to any job.  What amuses me though is that the Republican hacks are still engaged in their "circular firing squad" over this.  She will easily explain the context of her prior comments.

The radical right is proving to be racist, masogenist, . . . and two days of NOT explaining or limiting the 2001 statement should be enough to prove that to every fair minded person in the country.  The GOP ought to realize that Rush is getting rich while their party vaporizes.  It is almost funny to hear rich white guys complain about discrimination.

It is on the air because it has listeners and sponsors, unlike lefty Air America which went bankrupt (at least three times!!!)
Maybe Soros can cut them a check or NBC can buy them.
GE is waiting for their big payday from Barack. They will have the money soon.
If it were only her quote, maybe your complaints would be justified.  But coupled with the case of the qualified white firemen being denied promotions because of minority quotas not being met.....makes this all the more pertinent.
Wake up you fools, read her past writings and judgements, she is in fact not qualified to be on the highest court period. there are so many more people with level heads that still believe justus should be blind as it was intended. she is just another attempt to gain voters at a cost to the rest of the people of america.
Wow, I only have to go to the FR forum to find out that Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with the sanctions on his country!

Thanks for the info GP! Extremely enlightening.
Just watched David Shuster on Hardball. WTF? Why do you even give air time to someone like Tocredo?

The main stream media, by having this person spewing his hate and false statements, is just as bad.

Hardball and MSNBC you are a disgrace today. You may find Tecredo amusing, but there are actually people out there he may influence. You give him the soap box to distribute this crap.

Are there any real journalists left?
"Young Asian males are nine times as likely as white youth to belong to a gang and Hispanic youth are 19 times more likely. A disproportionate share of Hispanic young and poor are thus assimilating into a misogynistic, rebellious, youth sub-culture of drugs, gangs, crime, contempt for formal education, and hostility to police.

Clara Kansas - You are so right!! Can't you see all the Presidents men together saying we have to get the heat off of Pelosi.  Obama - hey how about I announce the SC choice? That should tie up the Republicans for awhile. You Betcha!!!!

Relax people. Your beloved Sonia will be confirmed. Gingrich and the others are just making sure America knows that the Dems under Obama are every bit the anti-white/male/hetero party they have been for years...if not more now. 2010 should be a Newt...er, I mean, a hoot.
I'm dissapointed because minorities shouldn't have to appologize for discussing their experiences or views in relation to their race and place in this world. I know Obama has done this before but if this was done to placate the Conservatives, I object.
Everyone, I repeat EVERYONE has used a poor choice of words at least once in their life. I don't care what their position or the circumstances we've all done it. So to get on Sotomayor for it is hypocritical.
Reading her full statement does not indicate a poor choice of words.  She was correct in her thought process and Mr. Gibbs should do his homework.
How about taking the rest of the comment out of context: someone with life experience would bring more to the position than one without! I can't believe Gibbs didn't quote the entire thing. He's part of the problem in THIS case.
I understood excatly what she meant by her statement.  For centuries White Men in this country have always asummed that they were the better judges when it came to making decisions for their women, their slaves etc.  We are now in the 21st century and we are seeing the error of their judgement.
