Pat , Boston, don't forget to "thank goodness" for NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, MTV, BET, CNN, The washington Post, The New York Times, The LA Times etc...Those evil republicans only have FoxNews and A.M. radio. Thank goodness for that.

MSNBC does some great work. Try concentrating on your own stupid waste of time right wing morons.  Try reaching out to them. They're in short supply on intelligence these days. btw, when are you guys leaving the union? Lol!!!

Okay Gang… Time for the KNOCK OUT!  You know we have the whack jobs on the ropes when they attack Pat in Boston!

Whoooo HOOOOO!! They have officially come unhinged!
I will lose major respect if she backs down on this.  What a crock.  The context of what she said is germane and appropriate and NO different than the context of Alito's own statements.  What a Crock!

In other news, anyone notice how this has completely taken the heat off Pelosi?  President Obama is a political genius when you remember how well he rolled out his endorsements/message last year to the present.

Are you admiring his political manipulations?  Because Bush did the same types of things...did you like him as well?  Or is it only ok when it's somone that you like?  You two party system believers are quite ridiculous.
Ask the King of Saudi Arabia why gas is still over $2.75 a gallon. Barack swore it was because Bush and Cheney were in the pocket of Big Oil? What is the excuse now?
WOW to watch Chuck Todd and Hardball call this breaking news is unbelievable.  They too must support Dick Hitler Cheney and the Nazi Republican Party.

What is it about strong women that the Men in the Media and Men in Politics have a problem with. I thought and expected more from MSNBC but they too must have a problem with women if they are taking their talking points from the bigotry of the repblican party.

Oh great. Are we in for more bowing and butt kissing from the president B. Hussein Obama?
[Nicholas: Minnesota, you remind me of Roman Hruska (R - NE).  During Nixon's pursuit of a strict constructionist, one of Nixon's nominees was decried as mediocre.  Hruska wondered out loud if there wasn't room on the SC for a mediocre judge.  Uh, no, there isn't.

And Tired Of Double Standard PC Democrats, do you have any issues with the descendants of alumni being admitted to elite institutions of higher learning solely on THAT basis?
Auntie Fascist (Sent Friday, May 29, 2009 12:54 PM)]
--To answer your first question, I never asked for a mediocre judge.  I am confused by your statement that you don’t think competent, capable people hail from outside of the Ivy institution.  That, I think, is a flawed view.  Secondly, I said it was both a problem for the right and the left (Republicans and Democrats).  I am merely saying if the court could and should represent our population better (race and sex), maybe we could also do better geographically and gather a wider legal view than that of the Ivy League East coast.  I’m just saying ...

--For your second question, I don’t know enough about institution admission policy.  My guess is that a private institution has the right to admit by whatever standard (though I could understand a government push for 1st generation or underserved students).  The rub is that an institution such as that will also be less-highly thought of on the job market—one would think.  I do think it is appropriate for institutions to consider a student’s relation to alumni status when seeking to admit.

Hope all of you have a GREAT weekend.  I'm off to celebrate my BIRTHDAY today (#43 for me).

I'd just like to leave you righties (without whom this site would be boring as hell) with something to think about.  With all of your rantings about "reverse racism", I bring you the story of Bonnie Sweeten.

I'm sure you've heard of this by now.  She's the mother who claimed that she and her daughter were kidnapped at the scene of an accident in Bucks County, PA and forced in the trunk of a Cadillac.  The story turned out to be a hoax, as she was trying to wisk her daughter away to Florida.  She is currently being extradited back to PA.  Like almost all hoaxes of this kind, her story involved the ever fictional "two BLACK men", playing on the usual fear and stereotyping to sell a story that sounded phony as soon as it parted her lips.

My question to you righties is this.  Where is your outrage?  You're all full of sound and fury at the perceived racism ginned up by conservatives taking a couple of sentences out of context.  Here you have a clear case of racism and racial stereotyping.  Worst of all, it isn't the first such case.  If you're all so racially enlightened, then why aren't you angry at this?  Prove to me that your racial concerns about Sotomayor aren't just phony outrage ginned up by your leader, Lord Limbaugh, or worse, simply a projection of your own racism.

While you're pondering, I recommend the book "Black Demons: The Media's Depiction of the African American Male Criminal Stereotype" by Dennis Rome.

Oddly enough 60 minutes did a special on this back in Jan.  Most of the rise in price was because the massive surplus of oil on the market was being bought up by Investment firms like Merrill Lynch that were trying to find ways to recoup their losses.  At one point it could have said that the financials owned more oil than the actually Oil producers...then when they weren't able to hold their house of cards together the market was flooded with cheap oil hence the drop in price.  OPEC countries had become used to the windfall profits from 4.00/gallon prices and have begun to scale back production to increase profits.  Of course they say it's because they explore new crude oil sources without the extra capital, but I wouldn't buy that for a second...they became accustomed to the windfall profits and don't want to cut corp. budgets to match the declining economy.

Funny thing about this is no body realized it and claimed it was from a shortage...enviro friendly folks jumped on this and began shouting that the sky was falling and the oil supplies were almost dry (which they aren't).  Funny how this crisis became politicized w/o any real substantive evidence to back those making the shortage of oil claims.  If the fed hadn't pumped the market with so much undeserved credit the market wouldn't have failed so beautifully and the financials wouldn't have resorted to such shady tactics to try and salvage themselves.  Isn't government intervention in the market just grand!

Does it occur to you that gas was nearly $4.00 a gallon this time last year, or that gas prices ALWAYS rise this time of year due to changes in the blend?

Of course, if it comforts you to cling to your ignorance, who am I to stop you?

I was merely pointing out from a political standpoint, the strategy.  I have stated MANY times on this site that I find him to be an above average politician.  I've also been clear that Dems don't hold moral high ground beyond this particular moment.  I am as tired as the next American that 95% of what comes out of DC is politics and VERY little is governance.  I personally find President Obama's style significantly easier to take.  There was simply nothing about "W's" political skill that I found admirable.  You have found my vantage ridiculous before and no doubt will again.
Thanks for answering my questions, Domenico!

**blush** :)

Happy birthday, jawillie in Philly!  Enjoy your day!

Have a great weekend, everyone!
I hope your weekend sucks, your dog dies and you find out that you were sired by an illicit relationship between Dick Cheney and your mother.

Knock yourself out Feisty.

Anita, go out to a few bars and score some love.

Nashville, I just read where Nashville is 8th in the top 10 of most depressing cities.  No further comment.

Cjake:  I didn't know what comment you referred to earlier today, but I agree that I'm better and I'll try not to let you down, whatever that means.

And next week, I promise to come back and visit the asylum some more.

Signed,

Evil Incarnate Republican and Enjoying Every Minute of It.

Chuck, Domenico and Mark: Thanks for the forum.  You're responsible for more indulgences than the Catholic church.
G. Gordon Liddy on the one hand, Keith Olbermann on the other.

Both bit players looking for attention. Both insignificant except to very small audiences.

Very Poor Analogy, go back to the drawing board because you just fell flat on that one.
Are you all aware that FoxNews' morning show has higher ratings than Keith Olbermans' show? I report, you decide. LOL
PBrown:

OK, how about Keith Olbermann and Michael Savage?

That's the best I can do when it comes to Keith Olbermann.
Domenico and Mark: I have an idea.

Why don't you put in a travel request to go with President Obama next week? It really is a pretty important trip. Besides, you guys deserve an opportunity to hit the road for few days. Chuck T. can hold the fort down here.

Have a wonderful weekend friends and foes alike here on First Read. {Any one signing up for the Love Boat vaca?} Good grief.
What is it with the 'right' that insists on airing our 'dirty laundry' internationally...

Or, what is it with out media that does the same damn thing...

Please, people - get a grip - what is read here is read all over the globe.

Is this really the face you want to paint the USA as?
Here we have a judge that has worked very hard to be a nominee for a position to highest court in the land.
To think even in casual passing that she can and has the right to seperate those above and below or "better" than
anyone else shows a pure lack of consideration of the struggles of others and a self centerness of her own struggles.
I believe that her future judgments will be tainted by only the small perspective of her own  life, not the intent of the "Law".
Americans can not risk the future of Courts and Laws by having some one that is self absorbed with a unequaled bias
of civil rights and bigotry. The "Law" and those interpretation of those "Laws" should never be secured with individual bias of
character but should be biased for the good of all equally. The acceptance of any "better" equivocation returns no equity to those processes of "Law".
We live by civil rights not "better" civil duty..
Keith Olbermann is not insignificant.  Olbermann provides facts unlike many such as Liddy, Limbaugh and Hannity who speak half truths and use bigotry and prejudice to juice up their base listeners with fear.  You may not like Olbermann because he leans left but he also goes after democrats when he disagrees.  You most certainly cannot compare him to criminal G. Gordon Liddy who represents the continued bias toward race and gender touted through the Nixon and Reagan administrations and still spoken by its spawn, Pat Buchanan and others.  The Ed Show, Hardball, Countdown and Rachel Maddow all provide factual information and when they report something incorrectly, they have the decency to correct it on air unlike FOX and others who continue to repeat the incorrect info.  You can tell that Ed, Keith, and Rachel do their homework before their shows air.  Countdown helped me keep maintain a positive attitude through the last 5 years of Bush & Company.
We live by civil rights not "better" civil duty..

And what does that have to do with a
"More Perfect Union"

Keith Reports the facts and considering you are a republican it's no wonder you are having a hard time comprehending what that is and that just makes you a sad person.

I would advise you to seek help but I would probably have to explain to you extactly what help means and I simply do not have that much time.
What about the weekend?

GM is going bankrupt, (goodbye, taxpayer dollars!  The unions get protected, the stock and bondholders get some protection, but we, who pumped all that money into this enterprise, get the shaft);

North Korea is testing a long range rocket that can reach the United States.  There is some bluster from Robert Gates, the UN will not invite North Korea to the next wine and cheese party, and....

Obama jets to New York to take his wife to dinner and a show!!!!!

PLEASE spare me the 'multitasking' excuse.  Last week, his response to the North Korea crisis was to attend two fundraisers.  THIS week, his response is a very expensive, (to the taxpayers-all that secret service protection and Air Force one, plus back-up plane and imposter plane-dwe pay for that.  I get that he paid his dinner bill and show tickets) date night.

He's in over his head, folks.  He hasn't go a clue.

How soon some forget that George Walker Bush kissed and held hands with the Saudi King. Is it okay for Bush but not for Obama just because? Hypocrit!
Lol pat, boston ma its funny how you think republicans are leaving the union Lol!!!! cause like, Lol!!! in 1860/1861 im pretty sure the radical democrats in the south seceded and left the union. Lol!!! and remember how most of them left because a republican (lincoln) won the presidency? Lol!!! lame show at republicans because not only was it an epic fail but you just made fun of democrats
The most important story is not the likely new justice no is it radio talk. It is GM and then entire history of automaking in this country. How is it that the great capitalist country was out performed by "socialist" Europe and Japan with better products, future thinking, and simply better management? What in the world has been going on in this "free market" capitalist nation? Apparently what ever we did for the last 30 years didn't work. This is not something that began 3 months ago.
Second point: CIA meltdown? Articles about the infighting in the CIA are curious. I always find it so interesting that the CIA is capable of leaking all kinds of information about their internal affairs at times like these when they are threatened. It doesn't help my faith in their methods. The CIA is and will remain a difficult agency to work with. Its very purpose and nature make it partially puppet to each new government, and yet it fights to maintain some independance and privacy. Panetta is walking the tightrope that is created at intervals when some correction is needed in the balance beween the executive, judicial, and legislative branches. The CIA just can't be left alone to do its business - it is a dangerous agency. Yet, it still must somehow do its business. It is the servant of democracy yet its nature is not easily adaptable to a a democracy.
The CIA fate should be a greater story than the court nomination.
