Aides: 'Latina' remark 'not a big deal'

From NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor
has not been asked directly if her 2001 comment about how a "wise Latina" would make a better decision than a white male was poorly worded as the White House claimed, according to advisors familiar with the Capitol Hill meetings that Sotomayor has completed thus far today.

When asked about the "wise Latina" speech excerpt, the president has responded, "I'm sure she would have restated it."

Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters, "I think she'd say that her word choice in 2001 was poor, that she was simply making the point that personal experience are relevant for the process of the judging."

According to the advisors, the judge has not been asked to re-state or retract what she said in 2001, but has been asked to discuss more broadly what she meant and whether personal background should influence legal opinion.

On the matter of the "wise Latina" comment, aides involved in the confirmation process with Sotomayor lay out an argument say that the judge's critics have focused "on a line from a speech" rather than taking issue with her judicial record.

Aides said the controversial comment "is not a big deal to us" during this process and suggest, "There is no disagreement that diversity is good on the bench."

To mitigate critical reactions to the 2001 quote, advisors expect to highlight instances when Justices Alito, Ginsburg, Thomas and former Justice O'Connor have also described how their life experiences inform their work.

The aides overall, though, said they are "pleased" with the day's meetings. The judge will have another round of courtesy meetings tomorrow.

NOTES: Some light color from the day… aides said Sotomayor "ran into" Sens. Collins, Boxer and Hagan in a ladies room near the Senate floor. There was a light-hearted conversation, they said, that women could also conduct official business in the restroom as men have for years.

Of course. the remark by Sotomayer is "no big deal". "Aides" say so, so it must be true. Make certain the "Aides" (Spinners?) also nedd to talk a lot about context, you know, about how people are taking Sotomayer's remarkds "out of context". The "out of context" statement makes people that say it appear smart, intelligent, and an authority, which usually they are anything but.
Sure, of course, why would a racist statement made by a Supreme Court nominee be anything but No Big Deal?
AIDES: 'LATINA' REMARK 'NOT A BIG DEAL'

I agree completely! I've said things like this that were also misunderstood.
"Some light color from the day… aides said Sotomayor "ran into" Sens. Collins, Boxer and Hagan in a ladies room near the Senate floor. "

Isn't that lines from a song?  "Meet me in the ladies room"?

Sounds right....maybe the ladies struck a deal, just like the men do....out of camera and microphone range!

The nomination is a wrap.  Justice Sotomayor!!
It's only a "big deal" if you know you're a Republican on the wrong side of all real issues. Or a journo willing to fan the fires of any controversy instead of having to do any, you know, actual reporting.

Wingnuts who habitually gripe about MSNBC "bias" must be chuckling about how well you're carrying their water on this.

>>>Republicans have let the Democrats brand them as hostile to minorities and its unfortuante that many really dont understand politics. You have a minority population in the U.S. that is uneducated in politics. The reason is simple, until recently never had anyone in politics to look up to. Politics were never COOL. It was always a "white folks" thing.

The Democrat party has cornered the market by saying the simple "Republicans hate you and will take all of your government programs away"

I suggest you find a clip of the HBO Documentary "Right America - Feeling Wronged".  You'll no doubt find that there are just as many Whites who are ignorant of politics as there are minorities (or even better, read some of the postings here).  Meanwhile, Republicans have cornered the market by saying that Democrats will take your guns away, turn your children into homosexuals, allow terrorist to attack you, turn America into a socialist country, are against Christianity, will kill all of your unborn children, etc., etc., etc.

In addition, they've convinced some of the more ignorant that Obama is a Muslim, a Socialist, a Marxist, a Fascist, a Nazi, not born in this country, the Anti-Christ, etc., etc., etc.

I can go all day with this.

Nashville_fan - You know, I was going to waste my time trying to YET AGAIN explain Judge Sotomayer's "wise Latina" comment,

No one is interested in your explanation, we're only  interested in Sotomayor's explanation. To date, she has only gone through surrogates to have them tell us what she said. She needs to quit hidding behind Pat Leahy's skirt and come out and explain it herself.
Alright guys, you trying to start crap again.  I keep reminding you about the National Enquirer(inquiring minds want to know) reporting you sometimes when you might be alittle bit bored put out there!!!

Good job today Mark, Domenico and all at FR, thanks!
Joe Don - It's only a "big deal" if you know you're a Republican on the wrong side of all real issues.

You don't care that a racist will be sitting on the Supreme Court?
It's not a Big Deal if you have enough votes to shoo them in anyway.

Or unless you are Fuzzy Zoeller.

Alright guys, you trying to start crap again.  I keep reminding you about the National Enquirer(inquiring minds want to know) - cindy, las vegas nv

The National Enquier has been more accurate and more vigliant in it's reporting then the New York Times. Also, the Enquier doesn't spike stories that make the Democrats look bad.

Exactly! Just like the "Party of No". Oh, wait a minute . . .

Ive seen that documentary and it wasnt that great. I was making a point of what I saw growing up. I made a point of what I hear and why minorities vote in lockstep for the Democrat party. what exactly is the explanation for the African American community voting 95% for Obama. That is not free thinking. free thinking would have been 55-45, 60-40 etc. We as a community do not open our minds up to other points of view. We tend to jump at the first thing that sounds good. You know this is sad but true, even if you wont admit it. Ask 20 people in your family why they vote Democrat (the ones that vote) and see what they say. Cant give you a coherent answer. Examples I got: I like Obama because he is going to stop my house note for a year, I like Obama because he is one of us, I like Obama because he is a cool cat, I like Obama because he is fine, I like Obama because I hate Bush, I like Obama because moma nem' do......you see where Im going......sad, sad, sad. Of the 95% that voted for him, 10% probably know the true history of the party....

Some would argue we've had many sit there before.  I guess there are even those who would argue that Scalia is borderline,...
Doe Jon - Oklahoma and Ginny hodge, Iowa - If either of you had taken the time to read the whole speech, you would know that A- she is not a racist, unless your prepared to call Justice Alito one also and B- Ginny, if you would have read it, it's self explanatory! Stop listening to your talking points then posting without the whole story. There is such a thing as google, try it!
Oh, Much Ado.  Americans Gotta Grow Up.

You make a good point. Add to that the fact that many people wouldn't vote for Obama because "he is going to take money from the rich and give it to the people that don't work," or "he is going to give free health care to everyone," or "he is going to take away my guns."

Politics is largely marketing. And both sides do a pretty good job of easily "selling" their brand to people that don't bother to do research and understand what people really stand for.
