GOP objects to Sotomayor hearing date

From NBC's Michelle Perry, NBC's Katelin Schartz, and Alex Beinstein
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R) told Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC today that Senate Republicans will not go along with the timing of July 13 for Sotomayor's confirmation hearing.

Grassley said he thinks it's too soon, both for Republicans and Democrats, to go through all of Sotomayor's writings. He said the timing of Sotomayor's hearing can not be compared with John Roberts', because she has been on the bench so much longer than he had been -- and thus has a longer paper trail.

The senator, a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, said he would look into what measures could be taken to delay the hearings.

As it turns out, Sotomayor's scheduled hearing is being held earlier than Roberts' and Samuel Alito's were.

For Roberts, 55 days passed between the day he was nominated (July 19, 2005) and the day his confirmation hearing began (Sept. 12, 2005).

For Alito, 70 days passed between the day he was nominated (Oct. 31, 2005) and the day his confirmation hearing began (Jan. 9, 2006).

For Sotomayor, 48 days will have passed between the date she was nominated (May 26, 2009) and the day her confirmation hearing is supposed to begin (July 13).

As more and more information comes out about Sotomayor, we're starting to get the picture she is not up to the job. Harry Reid may even have to read an opinion or two on her, just so he has a chance of making people think he knows what he's talking about.
Of course they object, they object to everything today
The Republicans should just shut up and confirm her.  Obama is President and he has the right to choose anyone he wants for the Supreme Court, assuming that the person is qualified, and does not have ethical issues.

Oh wait, I just remembered.  When Bush was president and Obama was a Senator, he voted no on Roberts and Alito.  He never questioned their intelligence or their qualifications.  He never made any ethics allegations against them.  He just voted no, because he did not agree with their politics.

Never mind.
For crying out loud, what a lame excuse.
The GOP objects to breathing the same air as non-Republicans. Why not this too. The new party of belligerent stupidity. This is great they should start objecting to having to walk up stairs next and having to crawl out of bed. OH WAIT I know they can object to not having Democrats serve them tea. They object to everything. I would have thought that was abundantly clear by now.
Do they have to agree to this?  Looks like the Demo control this.  It should be a shoe in regardless.

Ram it home.  Once you are in, you are always in.
Easy resolution then...why don't we just nominate Judges that have only a couple of rulings under their belt so that the (minority) Senators who have to 'vet' them don't have to be told a timeline on when they have to do their stinkin jobs!

"The senator, a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, said he would look into what measures could be taken to delay the hearings." - You're a senior member and don't already know what "measures" can be taken to delay the hearing!?!?!  What an idiot!

Feisty, I've tried to send you this response for days now. None of my posts are getting through.
Feistmeister: (I just love that name) I would like to sit down with Tim Russert (I miss him terribly). Knowing that isn't going to happen (unless I'm called home or like this would anyway) I'd go with Rahm(bo) for all the obvious reasons.

Perfect!  I too miss Tim terribly… he’s got be spinning in his grave with what David Gregory has done to his show.  I believe we are rapidly approaching the one year anniversary of his untimely passing.  Let all of us take a moment to remember our dear Friend Tim!!!  He was one of a kind!

Of course they object. They love to delay. There is more than ample time to do what needs to be done with some to spare for things that come up unexpectedly. Those skunks are up to no good and that is for sure. I say don't let them get away with it. Hold the hearings as planned.
Give the GOP another 4 weeks and they will want even more time. After all they are very slow [readers].
Sotomayor's confirmation hearings.

The date I have in mind is the 12th of Never.
OH GAWD!!  Can you believe these obstructionists?
It's always so different whenever Obama asks for anything. As in, Bush dogma was sacred, Obama agenda is "racist."

Sean

That's what I say too!
It is amazing to me that they just don't learn--in the rarefied atmosphere of Washington they just forget that in the rest of the country people who are fortunate enough to have jobs work very hard at them and wouldn't complain about how much time it take to do the job--especially before taking a month's additional vacation!

Go Penguins!
OMG - I mean WTF; are they insane!!! Really the GOPs have lost their ever lasting minds.

I am in the belief that the only goal the GOP members of congress have is to delay, delay, and delay.

Then I ask myself - why would they do this?

The answer - to piss people off, to show their muscle or maybe they think it may help them come the 2010 election.

I can't understand the rationale - then again I am talking about Republicans.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

Well, at least now the GOP can't argue that Judge Sotomayor isn't qualified for the position...

What a bunch of nonsense.  Chuck Grassley and Co. have had their little flunkies going over Sotomayor's record for a while.  Remember the pre-formulated arguments against the unnamed candidate, when Sotomayor was simply a front-runner on the short list?

Learn from the Coleman debacle, Chuck.  The American people know stalling when they see it.  Or, maybe Senator Grassley would prefer to hear this message in his new favored language(tween-Twitterese)- so here goes:

Dear Chuck:  u r n idiot.  kthxbai.
Yawnnnnn. Same old story, I  object, NO, NO, NO...
What I don't understand is why the Stimulus is SO SMALL. Aren't there 14 million lost jobs since the recession began? And Obama's Stimulus creates 3 million or 4 million- depending on the day you ask him. Let's go with the 3 million.

To get 14 million jobs, then we should just do a 5X Stimulus ($787B X 5), just about $4 Trillion would do the trick.

And if we want to completely wipe out unemployment, taking it all the way to 0%, then Obama just needs to do a 11X Stimulus of about $8 Trillion. Then every unemployed person will have an Obama job.

The Chinese are ready, willing, able and eager to lend us all the money we need. We need not worry about repaying the 5X Stimulus or 11X Stimulus any more than we worry about how we'd ever pay for the $787Billion one. Let's do it!
These stimulus plans take time. These things take time. First you have to get the people in Brazil to cut down the rain forest to make shovel handels. Then forge the steel for the shovels in China, then assemble the Shovels in Bengladesh, then load the shovels on a Liberian freighter to ship to the United States. Then you are shovel ready!
This confirmation is going to be a complete waste of taxpayer money.   Just confirm her and move on.   The press is going to focus on what a monumental day it is for Hispanic Americans and we're all going to sing koombayah.   Maybe Brian Williams can go back for another 2 hour special to give us a close up of the decision making process behind the Sotomayor confirmation.
No matter how you try to forget it, no matter how you try to deny it, no matter how you try to minimize it, 911 DID in fact happen and we must protect our people and our homeland adequately in order that it never happens again.
.....other than that I see Nashville_Fan is spreading her fertilizer around again this morning.
I have honestly never seen anyone as full of crap as she is. (I think she's an Obama employee who is paid to propogandize for him)

J. Merle Stanley in Da' HOUSE! (Sent Tuesday, June 09, 2009 10:52 AM)

No matter how we try and forget it? I don't spend a day without thinking about it.I was 8 blocks away. Did you lose your best friend in the world and nearly lose your sister? Did you hear the screams and thuds on the pavement as body parts fell like rain? No you didnt. I am so sick and tired of conservatives (especially from the south)reminding us that 9/11 happened. IT HAPPENED ON YOUR WATCH! And then what did you do to protect us further? You attacked Iraq and let Bin Laden go. You Republicans blew it. You dropped the ball. You let my beautiful home town be attacked and my wonderful friend be slaughtered. And Bin Laden still laughs. I have an idea how to keep America safe.....KEEP REPUBLICANS OUT OF POWER
Boy this sure is a surprise, NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's nt like the Dems actually need to read through any of her rulings,is it?  I mean, Obama nominated her, so enough said.

I just read smething very interesting on PAYGO, by the way.  It seems that discretionary spending, (40 of the budget) is EXEMPT from this.  In addition, the 'offsets' can take TEN YEARS to pay out.  So, in other words, $1.00 in spending increases, or tax cuts, can be paid for by cuttingten cents a year.

Kind of like paying the minimum on your credit card.

Great reporting there, First Read!
"As more and more information comes out about Sotomayor, we're starting to get the picture she is not up to the job."

ST Clute, some specifics would be nice, here.  What EXACTLY is this "information" that is coming out, that may disqualify Judge Sotomayor- in your opinion?  In my opinion, a judge that has issued rulings that have at times raised eyebrows on both the Left and the Right is most welcome.

Of course, if you are operating on the inaccurate talking point that Judge Sotomayor is a left-wing radical, then I could see how you might be confused.
Judge Sotomayor has been confirmed by the Senate twice, I believe (once under Pres.  George H.W. Bush and once under Pres. Bill Clinton).  If the Republicans are short of time, perhaps they could refer to the previous hearings and then look at her record since then.  All this does is make the Republicans look ridiculous -- they can't think, they can't work quickly, and they have no faith in their own institution (government).
Showmanship and posturing for their party's base.    Since we tax payers provide their staff's salary, there's no reason those folks aren't already reading the documents.  They won't find anything because from unbiased sources, every indication is that she is moderate, no red flags.

How funny though, to actually state that Sotomayor has more judicial experience than Roberts.  The GOP is certainly good at making their case while putting foot in mouth at same time.
Wouldn't it save you lots of words, by just telling us what the GOP approves of?

Oh yea, right...  They don't approve of anything...

My belly chuckle of the day?  That Scarborough is the NEW FACE of the GOP that can lead them out of the wilderness...  ROFLMAO....
Here's an idea . . .

Let the Republicans push it off for a few more months or a year. Then have Souter retire while congress is on vacation and use the powers of recess appointment to put Sotomayor in the court until she can be confirmed.

And when looking at number of days between nomination and the hearings, shouldn't we consider that the Senate typically adjourns for most of August, most of October, and all of November and December?

So wasn't Alito's hearing pretty much the first or second week the Senate was in session after he was nominated?
Well since all they do is block appointments and vote no I would think they have plenty of time on their hands.  I just think they can't read! They are the party of no education afterall.
S Justice...how about when bush came in with a huge surplus and left with a $1.2 Trillion deficit.  Now that was some mighty fine pay as you go by the republicans wasn't it? Who gave them this money?

FR....are you ever going to post any of my comments??
What do you know, obstruct, delay, obsctruct, delay...who is going to be in charge of this hearing, Norm Coleman?  Then again, he'll need a new job soon enough.

And, remember, ladies and gentleman (and chihuauhas), the GOP is the party that wanted to do away with filibusters for judicial appointments because they didn't like the way the Democrat minority was getting in the way of Bush's nominees.

SOSOTMAYOR ENCOURAGES THE DIVIDE IN THIS COUNTRY.

IF YOU READ HER "LATINA WOMEN SUPERIORITY" STATEMENTS CAREFULLY YOU CANNOT MISS THE FACT THAT SHE IS FURTHERING THE IDEA OF "RACE, GENDER AND CLASS" SUPERIORITY.

SOTOMAYOR HAS OPENED UP A CAN OF WORMS, ACTUALLY SNAKES, WHICH WILL CAUSE MORE DIVISION AND HARM IN OUR COUNTRY.

IF SOTOMAYOR CAN PUBLICLY & REPEATEDLY EXPRESS HER "BIASED" OPINIONS ABOUT "RACE, GENDER AND CLASS" SUPERIORITY --- DO WE NOT EXPECT OTHERS, WITH DIFFERING VIEWS, TO ALSO EXPRESS THEIR BIGOTED OPINIONS?
Wow, seven whole days earlier. I am shocked. Hey, they have their aides who do the real prep and underline the important passages and prepare their talking points. These guys just want more time to prepare their terribly long and wasteful and self-centered speeches they give to garner a few votes, and then toss in their question. Get the vote started.
These guys have had to work hard these few months. They are not used to that. After 8 years of sloth, something and someone is working.
GOP to Dems .. BLOW .. and rightfully so.
Many of her rulings were reviewed supposedly last time she was up for her current job.  The Republicans should only need to review her work since last nominated....when they voted FOR her.

The Republicans are SO transparent - vote yes every time Bush suggested something, vote no every time Obama does.  It takes no thought.  OK Repubs - just vote no, let the Democrats vote yes, she will be approved and we can all move on...

OK - all Republicans - this is how you spell yes -
Y-E-S.  You seem to have forgotten the word exists.
I wonder if the Republicans know how dumb they look -

PS - Boehner - lose the tanner.  Your face is getting too orange....
Everyone here seems to have a really good handle on why Republicans would do whatever it is they're doing with regard to this nomination.

With that expertise in mind, maybe someone can explain why the Democrats have played the exact same games every time they have been in the minority over the past couple of decades?

And who learned from who?  Maybe expound on the observation that all "leading" Senators and congress persons, regardless of party, seem to have attended the same basic education classes in politics?

This what they do, folks!  Especially the ones who are in "leadership".  Both parties, equally and equally conscienceless.

And their biggest enablers are their constituencies.
