GOP: Dem energy plan is C.R.A.P.

From NBC's Luke Russert

In a news conference today on Capitol Hill, House Republicans led by Mike Pence (R-IN) released their response to the Democrats’ energy bill.

The Republican bill, titled “The American Energy Act,” would bring down the costs by using various forms of renewable energy such as nuclear power and by building new refineries in order to up production of gasoline within the United States, according to GOP leaders.

Video: MSNBC's Joe Scarborough discusses the GOP's proposed energy plan with Republican Indiana Rep. Mike Pence.

The bill also sets a goal of constructing 100 nuclear power plants within the United States in the next 20 years “by streamlining a burdensome regulatory process and ensuring the recycling and safe storage of spent nuclear fuel,” according to a press release sent out by Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH).

While promoting their own plan, House Republicans vigorously attacked Democrats for their support of a cap-and-trade system to regulated carbon emissions, calling the legislation a “job killer.”

Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) said that a cap-and-trade law would cost Americans “over $846 billion" in the coming years. He went on to call the Democratic energy plan C.R.A.P., or “Continue Ruining America’s Prosperity.”

Minority Leader Boehner said the Democratic plan would amount to a national energy tax and claimed, “The Democrats’ national energy tax will be paid by anyone who drives a car, buys an American-made product, or flips on a light switch. That means a yearly average of $3,100 in higher energy costs for middle-class families -- and fewer jobs for American workers.”

At its core the “The American Energy Act” is based on increasing domestic production by exploring American oil shale and drilling in the Artic Coastal Plain and by building nuclear power plants.

When asked how 100 new nuclear plants would be built in the next 20 years, the GOP leaders said through competitive “private investment” brought on by contracts offered by the U.S. government and individual states.

On the issue of what would happen to nuclear waste, Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) said that reprocessing as well as further construction of nuclear waste dumping sites such as Yucca Mountain would be needed.

“If an American used nuclear power their entire life, they would produce enough nuclear waste to fill a soda can," Upton asserted. "If we reprocesses that it would be enough waste to fill a 50-cent piece.”

Look for the GOP to continue calling the Democratic energy plan “cap and tax” and make the case that it is too costly in the midst of a severe economic recession.

DC's out-of-control acronyms
From NBC's Domenico Montanaro

DC is known for its lame attempts at wittiness through acronyms.

CRAP is just the latest in the past couple of days. See also:
The Energy and Commerce Committee's hearing tomorrow on the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act, or CALM.

Or the Cash for Clunkers initiative, formally called, the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act, or, you guessed it -- CARS.

Come on.

So, have some fun with this. What are your best/favorite real (or fake/funny) legislative acronyms?

The Dem energy plan is CRAP. So what else is new?

I still think Todd Palin should kick Letterman's butt. Even Sarah could do it.
It apparent that the Democrats can't come with any plan for anything to SAVE the American taxpayer any money.
The Committee to Reelect the President.  CREEP.
Would we have expected anything less from the PARTY OF NO?
We're just going to have to wait for the mid-term elections and hope the Democrats and the ultra-leftwing nuts like Obama don't destroy the entire country before then.
When asked how 100 new nuclear plants would be built in the next 20 years, the GOP leaders said through competitive “private investment” brought on by contracts offered by the U.S. government and individual states.

Yes....sliding money to friends to line their pockets with. Sorry can't help but feel suspect of any ideas from them that has to do with money and contracts.

They need to redeem themselves with the American public before we trust you all with important things such as energy.
FR Here's one for ya how about using FUBAR to describe the current lot of Repukes?
How many rejected ideas can the party of no, the grand obstructionist party, incorporate into their proposal (artic drilling, nuclear storage at Yucca Mt, hundreds of nuke plants)?  How can they complain that the Dem plan impacts those who buy American when they are advocating a boycott of GM and are bound and determined to eliminate tens of thousands of American job advocating for the failure of American auto brands?  Why bother listening to these people?  They are irrelevant and out of touch
Just learned the security guard died from his injuries, thoughts and prayers to his family.

“by streamlining a burdensome regulatory process and ensuring the recycling and safe storage of spent nuclear fuel,” according to a press release sent out by Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH).

Did anyone else read this and think, "streamline it by getting rid of that pesky competitive bid process, those nuisance regulations, etc."

You know, the usual suspects?  HA

Acronyms, real or imagined:

Taxed Enough Already - Teabagging for short, that one never quite gets old for me

I've become quite fond of G"NO"P and the Grand Obstructionist Party.

TARP Troubled Asset Relief Program - for whom exactly was the relief?  Socialized losses,...
----------

I'm gonna' need to marinate on some imagined ones.
Japan and France can have nukes, manage the plants safely, and store spent fuel safely. But apparently the US can't do that. I guess we'll depend on windpower to power our steel mills. Oh wait, we don't have any steel mills, those jobs are gone overseas.
-----------------------------------------------------
Now THAT is a great idea.

It was very successful when we "streamlined regulation" for the financial industry and it only resulted in the largest banks requiring government intervention to prevent them from going belly up.

What harm could possibly come from deregulating nuclear power plant construction? It isn't like there are any inherent dangers to nuclear energy or anything (aside from Three Mile Island and Chernobyl that is).

So what they are looking at is more nuclear plants, more refineries, and more drilling. Sounds like a great way to end our dependence on oil and slow global warming!
The energy issue brings me back to the election when VP candidate Biden told the nation that Obama/Biden didn't support Clean coal....Later Obama said that was wrong and said they did--after all he didn't want to lose the Pennsyslvania and West Virginia coal voters.  Then there was the GOP "drill, baby, drill" movement (to drill oil off-shore).  Obama, who had balked at that, changed his lingo once polls started turning against him and the Dems and he included "off-shore" drilling in his list of items he would do.  These are just more examples of how this man changes with the polling winds.  Now what will he do with Cap and trade--wait to see what the polls say first and then decide?  This from a man who promised "You'll ALWAYS know where I stand on an issue..."   Will we?
Oh my I’m impressed… who would of thought those silly Republicant’s could be so ‘WITTY’!

That one’s a real ‘knee slapper’! snark-o-meter set at 98%

Can’t get any work done but my my those awesome acronyms… well now that’s putting their brains to work!
Cap and Trade, another ball and chain on every American. All the while the rest of the world belches out more pollution in one year then the US does in a 100 years.

It's getting harder and harder to take Obama seriously. The man has an agenda that is nothing but socialism, purely centalized control of every aspect of every Americans life. The taxes we'll pay for Cap and Trade and for his healthcare plan will literally kill off the country.
Using republican math, their plan will cost us over $64 quadrillion dollars over the next 10 years. These costs are attributed toward the inevitable lawsuits over the death and permanent disability that will be caused by the nuclear plants when they melt down. And then add another $300 quadrillion dollars over the next 50 years for relocating everyone in the US currently living near a shoreline that is less than 50 feet above sea level.

I got to those numbers using the same types of calculations the GOP uses to prove how bad Democratic plans are.
Cash for Clunkers - another great Democrat idea, that isn't funded.

H.C.R.A.-Heal Care Reform Act, or HCRA
If they'd just put all the right wing blow hards in the vicinity of Boone Pickens wind farms we'd have plenty of energy.
All these programs the Democrats keep legislating, it's starting to add up to some serious coin. Just who is going to pay for all this?
The GOPers are forever looking backward. Drilling or mining for more fossil fuels is not a long term solution AND it simply continues to make the same old techno companies more profitable for the SHORT TERM. Their power clogs the system and they seek to stiffle innovation. The Oil and Coal industries must really love the GOPer Nopers!

Nuclear energy is almost a 3rd rail issue. Would Boehner and McConnell like some nice cooling ponds in their neightborhoods? I think not. The 1/2 life of some of the used nuclear fuel components is measureed in 100s or even 1000s of years. Unless we find a better way to store the spent fuel permamnently, there will not be another 100 reactors in the next 20 years, no way!

As the President has said we need new green technology. Tom Friedman from NYT makes this point in his book "Hot, Flat and Crowded".

What we really need is a paradigm shift, folks. Remember in the early 90s when the internet was a gleam in Al Gore's eye? In the last 15 years the net has given us several paradigm shifts.

I recall a time in the mid 90s when Visa and MC were fighting tooth and nail against online credit/debit processing. Not secure enough they said. Now I write one check a month for rent and pay for almost everything else online.

What will the new green tech be? Geothermal, Solar, Wind, Fusion, Hydrogen cars. The verdict is still out on the future as we have not yet invented it, YET!

The powers that be always resist change! That is how they conspire to keep their power. GM killed the electric car that would have saved them from bankruptsy.

The paradigm shift will come, the new tech will emerge. Right now in someone's garage the next Edison is inventing the solution. We have to provide for a climate that rewards innovation, not one that worships the past. Reagan and his ideas are dead!

Move on!
Would we have expected anything less from the PARTY OF NO?

Are you insane. The Republcians have a plan that will produce clean energy and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. And the Democrats have . . . . , nothing, except this cap and trade garbage, which is nothing more then more taxes on Americans for no value in return.
surprise surprise... republicans don't like the Dem's energy proposals.  it would be different if this was a change, but this isn't news.  its the status quo.

yeah, this 'Christian' nation really turned the other cheek after 9/11 (and i'm sure the dead in Iraq and Afghanistan will appreciate all the cheek turning thats been done since).  and in the 8 years since then i've seen a whole lot of cheek turning from the Israelis toward their Palestinian neighbors... (i mean aside from their settlements and bombs and whatnot)

give me a break.  all monotheistic religions claim theirs is the only true path to salvation, the only true religion, The only TRUE GOD.

the fact of the matter is that all religions are founded by men.  men.  not god, not anything else.  men.

you are trying to say that Jews and Christians are the 'honorable', peaceful monotheistic faiths, and that Islam is the bastion of extremism.  The Pro-life movement and their tactics show the truth that extremism is found in all religion, and from my observations it is religion that promotes extremism by preaching that their way, ideology, or beliefs are the only 'true' beliefs, and anyone disagreeing with those views is an infidel, therefore they 'don't really think like you and i do', or 'they don't see things the way you and i do', and therefore they aren't really people anyway... (recognize where i got these quotes from?).  This is the first step in dehumanization, and the basis of justification for murder performed by all monotheistic faiths.

so spare us the slander of Muslims because 'christians and jews turn the other cheek', when its been shown that each group has its allotment of radical extremists giving a bad name to the whole.

my sympathies to all the families and friends of the individuals who have been killed by religious extremists of any faith, for whatever reason.

Freedom of Speech for $600 Alex?

Although there is an obvious connection between the rhetoric of propaganda artists and the extremists who act on their divisive speech, it would violate their constitutional rights to free speech to close them down, and were the Administration to follow your advice they would become the facists that Rush & co. are calling them.

What needs to be done is a change in our society from the 'me first, my ideology is always right and you can't change my mind' philosophy to a more tolerant, compromising, moderate society. The blame does not belong to entertainers who are just an outlet for opinion, but on each and every one of us who live in this nation.

It is our responsibility because nations can do nothing without their people, and we are the ones who have let our moral values decay, have let our suns and daughters be raised in single parent homes questioning if they are loved and feeling alone and ignored for whatever reason, because we value hypocrisy and allow lies and spin to be used as wedges against our unity, we cling to our ideology in spite of the facts that compromise and moderation were the cornerstones of this republic being formed, because we will pass by someone on the street in need of help because it isn't our problem, because we place blame instead of finding solutions, and because we have allowed political and social apathy to turn our republic into a machine dominated by the power elite and special interest groups that use the populace and have expanded upon the negative aspects of capitalism by moving to the extreme end of no oversight and no responsibility.

look in the mirror and we all will find why our country is in this state, and until we pony up and affect change in our immediate communities, we will continue down the path of decadance, decay, and decline.

i'll leave you with a Quote from Terry Goodkind:
Wizard's First Rule: People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People’s heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool."

======================================
If more refineries were needed should't the gas companies build them?
Sounds like more contributions being paid back.
If the government funds the building does it get the profits they generate? Or will the GOP just blame Obama for getting involved in the private sector?

Dear GOP which way do you want it?
Oh! That's right, it's whatever way is the opposite from the democrats.
Obama Does Socialism!!
[So, have some fun with this. What are your best/favorite real (or fake/funny) legislative acronyms?]
--I don't like the legislative acronyms (strongly despise?).  From the makers of the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. act.  Let them sell the bills on their merits.  While the prop. system of CA is crazy, the numbering system is good and should be enacted federally.  These acronyms more often tend to mask what a piece of legislation really does.  Another example would be (and I don't remember the name) something like the tax simplification act, which really mean the Accountant Job Security Act.  You know, I will break my policy against stupid computer/teenage jingo and say WFT?!?!

Sorry to suck the fun out.  It just pisses me off.

Keith Wilson, Houston (Sent Wednesday, June 10, 2009 5:28 PM)

You are way off base and highly misinformed! No doubt you've been brainwashed by big oil in the Houston area!

In 2002 (latest year I could easily find data showing emissions by country), the US was the largest source of CO2. Here are some stats (in million tons per year):

US - 5,773
China - 3,783
Russian - 1,534
Japan - 1,213
India - 1,106

Even factoring in the growth of China (I believe China has passed us) and India, your statement is completely without basis.

On a per capita basis, the US is even worse. We emit almost 7 times more per capita than China and almost 20 times more per capita than India.
It is refreshing to see the GOP come up with some new ideas! Drilling, refining, and privatizing and deregulating the nuclear industry. How were they able to get so creative and come up with some innovative ways of solving our energy problems and reducing global warming?

Oh yeah, that's right, this is the same thing they've been saying since Reagan!
I thought it was nucular...

How about C.A.R.D = Chihuahuas Are Retarded Dogs
How is this for an acronym - DOFO.

Dependence on Foreign Oil.

Tell them to get the "f" out of there.

Dependence on Oil.

Ah, thats better. Now we can focus on the real problem.
France and Japan have proven that nuclear power can be done, and safely. If you think that dependence on oil and coal is safe, maybe you should move to the coast and wait for the ice to melt. Granted - it isn't "green", meaning renewable, but it is a lot cleaner and may provide the bridge that we need to get off the oil before renewable technology is cost effective. The sun's energy equals about one kilowatt per square meter - more than enough to power the country. However, we can only harvest about 4% of that affordably. Not going to work. However, there are solar cells that can harvest up to 26% of that, but they are too expensive right now. The good side of the dem's plan is that it encourages the development of non-carbon technology. The bad side is that it is, like many of Obama's projects, a good example of not living within the country's means. Our kids will be footing that bill, and they have a huge tab already. I think that the answer is in the middle, with carbon credits and nuclear tech and solar and wind and... You get the picture. We should have learned the folly of dependence on a single energy source already.
Chris, IL

If the second 100 don't melt the earth any more than the first 104, I'd be willing to take the chance and double the current 20% of our electricity that is generated safely by nuclear plants.  My guess is that more modern plants would have increased generating capacity, so a mere doubling might be selling it a bit short.

It would also be a truly stimulative long term project involving a lot of good paying jobs in the development and construction phase as well as the long term operating phase.

And it would be reasonable, based on our geographic size and our population, compared to France which operates 69 nuclear power plants that generate 75% of its electricity needs.

If France can do it, why can't we?

My guess is that if Obama proposed constructing 100 nuclear plants over the next 20 years, it would be, in the eyes of the Obama faithful, tatamount to Kennedy landing a man on the moon and an eminently worthy project.

But this is a Republican idea so the kneejerk reaction is to effectively remove it from Obama's repetoire no matter how good it might be for the country, and placate the left wing environmental faction of the Democrat party.

Political self-interest wins the day, a too frequent occurrence.

by streamlining a burdensome regulatory process and ensuring the recycling and safe storage of spent nuclear fuel,”

The media must have screwed up again.  After all, we must have discovered a way to dispose of or at the very least, keep safe the nuclear waste all those plants will generate.   And I know every republican on this board will immediately say to put those facilities in their neighborhood.  After all, it must be safe, correct?

Or Politicize the Justice Department
Or Wire Tap Americans indiscriminately
Or Start Violating the Geneva Convention b TORTURING people
Or 'Fiddle' while a major American city is flooded
Or let Terrorists attack the World Trade Center and the Pentagon under HIS Watch !!

Build 100 nuclear power plants, ease restrictions on regulating them and come up with some vague, unspecified plan with what to do with nuclear waste...why do I want to cry?

PS:  The Obama haters are out in full force---Obama haters: Some Thoughtless Unimaginative People In Denial (STUPID)
Let's see, the minority party doesn't like health care for all citizens; financial reform to fix the damage done to our economy; closing a prision camp where torture exisited; rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure; a multi-ethnic supreme court.  But it does it like nuclear power and no taxes for the wealthy!
We are going to be an oil consuming world for at least the next several decades. Get used to it. No amount of throwing around pixie dust is going to change that. Why? Becuase other forms of energy cost too much to get. Oil is cheap. And don't get me started on how much energy is used to build a Prius or the Insight just so some Birkenstock wearing lefty can feel good about himself.

Bear in mind, the progressive goal here is to artificially raise the price of commodities beyond where they normally would be under normal market conditions. Liberals/Progressives recognize that low commodity prices are the fuel (no pun intended) of capitalism.
