GOP watch: Palins vs. Letterman

Here’s one rule to usually live by -- never pick a fight with a comedian, because it’s rarely a fight you’re going to win.

Indeed, David Letterman last night couldn't help but throw out a few new zingers regarding the controversy he's created with jokes involving Palin and her family, NBC’s Dax Tejera reports. In his opening monologue, the late-night host admitted to being depressed about angering Palin -- so he went out and spent $150,000 on clothes.

Video: Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says “Late Night” host David Letterman’s jokes about one of her daughters were “sexually perverted” and “disgusting.” Now Letterman is responding to her comments. NBC’s Norah O’Donnell reports.

After the show's first block and, Tejera adds, Letterman addressed the issue head on by reading a statement from the governor’s husband, Todd, and then a response from Gov. Palin herself. Letterman repeated the jokes that the Palins are upset about, cautioning beforehand this could "very well be my last show." Letterman then said he was not necessarily proud of the jokes and that they were just that -- jokes to get a laugh. "I recognize these are ugly, these are actually ugly, these are borderline, but again, in an act of desperation to get cheap laughs, what I've been doing in the last 30 years." Letterman insisted these were not jokes about Gov. Palin's 14-year-old daughter, citing his record over the years.

"Yes, maybe these are questionable because the girl who actually, uh, excuse me, but was knocked up, is now 18-years-old.  So the difference there is 14-years-old and of legal age, okay, now I can't really defend the joke, I agree, unpleasant, ugly, but I would never, never think that it was funny to use a 14-year-old girl as joke like this for God's sake."

Per MSNBC’s Norah O’Donnell, Todd Palin released this statement: "Nice attempt by Letterman to draw the heat away from himself; however, Willow was the only one at the Yankees game and the only Palin child included in the photo opportunities with the Giulianis, as was obvious. Regardless of which Palin daughter it was, Bristol, Willow or Piper, these sexually-perverted comments are outside the acceptance of mainstream America."

David Letterman really needs to let this go.  It doesn't reflect well on him.

The liberals constantly trying to find something wrong with Palin just proves how intimidated they are by her.  I love it.
Hey Todd, did you tell you wife her comments were outside the acceptance of mainstream America when she was trying to incite riots during the campaigning?  She threw out a whole bunch of stuff myself and a whole lot of Americans thought were unacceptable.  I'm not saying with Letterman said was right.  Both parties need to take responsibility for their mouths!
What a crass old man Letterman has become. And then he stands there last night trying to do a little/lot of CYA. To apology, no remorse. "Here's what I meant to say", Letterman said, and then goes on to be the same creepy mess he's been for years.

The man is ugly, both in heart and in mind.
FR: Here’s one rule to usually live by -- never pick a fight with a comedian, because it’s rarely a fight you’re going to win.

Then you can pick a fight with Letterman, because he's not a comedian. He looks to be aman with a serious problem though. He should go and get some professional help,
I'm not surprised that Sinner Sarah is twisting Letterman's jokes about her 18 year old abstinence defying daughter as a joke on her 14 year old one.  She's always been a liar and it's not surprising that she's twisting the truth to fit her own pathetic petty partisan needs.  Letterman is a real man who can apologize for being over the top, when will the Wasilla Hillbilly apologize for twisting his words for her benefit?  Never is the answer because this Wicked Witch of Alaska has no class and no morals.

The Wasilla Hillbilly cares only about herself and no one else.  Time for Alaskans to give her the heave ho before she bankrupts the whole state.  Rest assured we Liberals will never let down on dogging this lying politician for her nefarious perfidy.

In Letterman We Trust!
Impeach Palin Now!
Go Lakers!

Letterman issue them an apology and invited Palin to appear on his show--these people are playing this for all is't worth....publicity.
Why in the world do liberal men, liberal activist men, hate Sarah Palin so much. Is it because she's pro-life? Pro-gun? Pro-family? A successful woman that didn't rely on a man to be successful? Just what is the problem with these people?
come on, the Palin need to stop, every body knew who he was talking about, but they want to start something about Nothening. good greef,
why would any body say any thing about a 14 year old child getting pregant, please this is a non story. but the joke about getting depressed and spending 150,000.00 on clothes was funny. if the palins want to stop people from talking about them, then stop acting like trailer trash!!!!
Where were the Palins when SNL was making jokes about 14 year old Chelsea (or when John McCain was making jokes at her expense). Even before "Monica", jokes about the inner workings of the Clinton marriage were exploited by the right and by comedians.
Obviously it's not "outside the mainstream" if the audience laughed...

Enough with comedy being the only "art" in this country that is subject to censoring. It is entertainment; Letterman is not a news show. Was it borderline? Maybe, but that's what Letterman is paid to do - take jokes right up to the line.
Give me a break! Everyone knows the joke was aimed at Bristol, and given that she has paraded all over the country talking about abstinence, and given that she didn't subscribe to that and had a very public pregnancy and birth, shes fair game.

As Letterman says, even with the subject being an 18 year old, it is questionable. But Palin needs to get over it and move on.

She pretends to be offended and pretends that jokes about sex with her older daughter are offensive. But it is pretty clear she's just looking for some more PR and looking to fire up the prudish right wing base that supports her.
Palin, the new definition for white trash, has this coming.  She dragged her children into the public spotlight in the campaign, raising the stakes for President Obama with dangerous rhetoric in front of right wing nutjobs, and then she whines when it comes back to haunt her.  Tough you know what, Palins.
Palin knew who Letterman was talking about, "her 18 year old    pregnant unwed daughter", not the 14 year old. Palin spun that to change the subject.  Everything Letterman said was true; if her daughter is old enough to act like a slut, he can call her one.  Palin is quick to talk about everybody else & she's got no room to talk.
You mean people actually stay up and watch late night shows.  As a graduate student, don't have that luxury.
Like that Todd dude cares about America, what was his original party.  Those 2 are outside of mainstream America.  Sorry but comedians & David Letterman have been a part of mainstream America for decades.  Shows you how out of touch those 2 clowns are.
Is this what Letterman has to stoop to to beat Conan O'Brien?
Letterman is great.  He was also doing the job he was paid to do.  As more and more press releases come out of the Palin camp it just seems like this joke gets more funny by the minute.  It doesn't reflect bad on Letterman at all.  It reflects bad on the Palin's who seem hell bent on everyone thinking of their daughters as household names.  Who the hell is piper?  Why would I give a rip?  Thanks manservant Todd I soooooooooo needed to know you have a 14 year old daughter in the first place.  Lemme see oh right no one cares about you.

I think the Palins are making themselves look bad.  They do this a lot for attention.
Why in the world do liberal men, liberal activist men, hate Sarah Palin so much. Is it because she's pro-life? Pro-gun? Pro-family? A successful woman that didn't rely on a man to be successful? Just what is the problem with these people?

The answer is simple...it's because she is pro-stupidity.
Don't forget that Imus was fired and ridiculed for "being funny."  Now, when Letterman does it, he is praised and defended.
Leave it to the morally bankrupt liberals on this blog to defend Letterman, only because his target was Sarah Palin, in New York for an autism event.
Why in the world do liberal men, liberal activist men, hate Sarah Palin so much. Is it because she's pro-life? Pro-gun? Pro-family? A successful woman that didn't rely on a man to be successful? Just what is the problem with these people?

We liberal men don't hate Sarah Palin, nor do we fear her. We think she is incompetent!

Then I'm sure you'd find a similar joke about the Obama daughters funny, right?  Because after all, it's not a news show.
Rush Limbaugh isn't a news show either, but you all seem to take great offense to things he says.
I wouldn't even know about this if not for the Palin's keeping it in the news.  Letterman is a comedian, the Palins need to just laugh it off the way Obama does (as in his ears).
Many celebrities have taken on the National Enquirer, etc., and won. It's time someone took on Letterman.
Funny that Palin's first reaction was to be pissed about Letterman's comment out the way she dresses.  It wasn't until later that she suddenly seemed to have concern regarding the comments made about her daughter.
Apparently, with some of the respondents on this board, it's much more okay to make appauling racist, sexist and evil, degenerate commentary or songs but how dare anyone make a comment about Bristol Palin...and the fact that, even after the rescinding of such a joke, Letterman calling it "ugly" but then verifying whom he meant and underscoring that it is his job to poke fun and make jokes...the Palins wouldn't let it rest...It's stupid...And I see many of the people on this board are just as whacky in their thinking and illogical as she is...Remember Palin's famous anti intellectual, extreme right wing authoritarian "us vs. them" speeches where she openly attacked Obama for "not being like we are" citing that the only "real" Americans were in her crowd, listening to her speeches...that anyone else with another idea was the "enemy" and also allowed and incited her crowds to attack the media...Such venom and evil and you guys are making a big deal over a bad joke, get over it...I can think of much worse things in the world than a bad joke being the end of the world as we know it...Maybe Letterman might refrain next time, but he's a comedian..What's Palin's excuse?!!
Sarah Palin and the First Dude did nothing to stop cries of " Kill HIm" at her rallies, no rebuttal of prejudice as did John McCain.  Perhaps Sarah think jokes about sexuality that are obviously jokes, be they bad or good , are more serious than racial and religious prejudice and hatred.  THAT TELLS ALL WE HAVE TO KNOW ABOUT SARAH PALIN. . And in case Sarah and the Dude have forgotten , their older daughter did get " knocked up " while living in their home and being taught their values.
To: Frank, Mechanicsburg,PA and to Hey, you asked! Thank you both!!! I first laughed at both the comments/answers because they are so true; and then I realized that these people are just as dull as Sarah. They keep complaining about people who bash Sarah Palin, yet, they never defend her around the issue of brains.  What is it that they say about not doing battle with an unarmed opponent?
Letterman is no comedian....that requires one to actually be funny.  Letterman hasn't been funny since 1986.
Funny that Palin's first reaction was outrage about Letterman's "pathetic" comment about her and the way she dresses.  She wasn't outraged about the comments made about her daughter until much later.
All women with children should consider how they would like it if a failed weatherman, (who stopped being funny in 1989) said these comments about YOUR daughter, regardless of her age....that includes you bitter lib and dem women defending David Littleman here.
This is why Palin never made it far in the political race.

Letterman is a brilliant entertainer. Period.  He is at the top of his game, having been awarded countless Emmys for his work.

If we continue to be a nation that is so sensitive, we will all become even more drab, humdrum and boring than our lives are already becoming.

No one will be able to say anything outside of a monotonic tone, for fear it might be misinterpreted.

Josh
The joke was in extremely poor taste. David Letterman should apologize unconditionally on his show.

-A long time David Letterman fan.
what would the media and cbs have done if this was said about hillary and chelsia???????
Yeah.  Let it go, Dave.  You are just giving Palin more time to be self-righteous.
The real joke IS Letterman
This has brought Sarah into the spotlight once again.  It's working so well for her, you'd think her handlers planned the whole thing.  Though, Sarah should be careful in throwing stones at perverted white men... they are the backbone of her political party.
Letterman should leave the Palins alone because all they are looking for is some free publicity; whether it is good or bad.
Where is their anger at the outlandish, ridiculous statements Limbaugh and wannabes, Fix news etc make?
At least Letterman admits to being a comedian.
Their "private family life" disappeared when Palin
constantly dragged them into the limelight during her campaign in hopes of getting more votes. And, her campaign of hate, anger, fear and divsion of our country made her fair game for any thinking individual.
They say that there's a lot of anger behind comedy.  In Dave's case I see the anger, but not the comedy.  I do have a pretty good idea of who he dislikes....but what's the fun in that?  Conan can easily win in the ratings if he avoids the hostility and makes his show a fun place to visit.  Worked for Johnny, worked for Jay.
Letterman needs to give it up or get some worthy jokes.  It is difficult growing up be it 14 or 18, yet we got a 60+ year old man public poking fun and insulting the mistakes of young girls like some bully on the playground.   Your rebelious youth has nothing on these girls.  GROW UP LETTERMAN and stop attacking children.
Dear Mrs Palin.
You are a Governor, and you ran for Vice President. That means you are a public figure. That means people are going to make fun of you. Deal with it.
Sarah Palin scares the hell out of Letterman and all of you libs.

You all allow her to intimidate you just by her mere presence. Obie has too sweat out a fake speech to work his intimidation, which now is waning.
Letterman is just a pathetic, bitter man.  He stopped being funny a long time ago.
In the absence of “W” comedians need a village idiot to make fun of, so enter Miss Wasilla.

As a liberal man, I do not fear or hate Sarah Palin.

I simply think she is living proof of the Quayle Principal, a principal that states that republican vice presidential running mates will brought into that position as impeachment insurance and not because of any level of skill or competency they may have.

She is Governor of a state with the population the size of Memphis, it took her 6 years to get a 4 year degree, she is a former beauty contestant (that must require some enlightenment).

I really thought her 15 minutes were up.  Hopefully they are now.
So he offended half a dozen nut jobs, who cares? It was still hilarious.
You know, Hillary Clinton endured years of verbal abuse that makes this look like child's play.  And yet I don't recall ever Hillary playing professional victim in the media.
I'd be curious to see the liberal reaction if Letterman made fun of Obama's daughters. I garauntee the libs here wouldn't be saying "Get over it."
republicans have been famous for having no sense of humor. keep it up!!! i hope they never win another major election. The US experiment with fascism is hopefully over.
