First thoughts: On the road again

*** On the road again: So far in his young presidency, every time President Obama has wanted to sell a legislative priority to the public (and to Congress) he has hit the road. In February, when campaigning for his stimulus, he held town halls in Indiana and Florida. In March, when pushing for his budget, he traveled to California. And now, as health care has become the administration’s top priority for the rest of the year, Obama is hitting the road again by holding a town hall in Green Bay, WI at 1:10 pm ET. Political writer Matt Bai recently observed that Team Obama learned from its experience with the stimulus that it had to take a more active role in the legislative process -- even by holding town halls and giving speeches. ”The lesson Obama’s team took from this experience, and one that will no doubt inform its approach to health care, is that it’s fine for a president to stand back from the process -- but not so far back that Congress thinks he’s trying to duck the consequences… If Obama is going to sign a transformative health care law this year, it will, at some point soon, have to become his plan, no matter how much autonomy he wants to confer on his allies in Congress.” And why is Obama in Green Bay? The Washington Post says the president wants to highlight the city’s “strategy for squeezing out waste without hurting quality."

*** Straddling the fence: Yet also note this: The White House wants the president to be the face of health care reform, but it doesn’t want him involved in the congressional back-and-forth. It's a tough fence to straddle. But yesterday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs somewhat stunningly said he wouldn't be addressing the details of the president's position on various pieces of the health-care reform debate. We'll see if the White House can truly keep that up.

*** Doctor(s) No? Obama also will hit the road on Monday, when he heads to Chicago to speak about health care to the American Medical Association. But that audience might not be a welcoming one. Per the New York Times, the AMA now formally opposes any public/government insurance plan that would compete with private ones. “[I]n comments submitted to the Senate Finance Committee, the American Medical Association said: ‘The A.M.A. does not believe that creating a public health insurance option for non-disabled individuals under age 65 is the best way to expand health insurance coverage and lower costs. The introduction of a new public plan threatens to restrict patient choice by driving out private insurers, which currently provide coverage for nearly 70 percent of Americans.’” Meanwhile, Sen. Kent Conrad (D) has been trying to find a compromise on the public insurance option. His idea of creating non-profit co-ops (a la utilities) seems to be gathering media momentum. And for what it’s worth, we're hearing positive things about it inside the White House. Also today, House Republicans will hold a press conference on health care at 11:45 am ET, and Mitch McConnell will address the topic on the Senate floor at 10:00 am.

*** Questions about bipartisanship: Sticking with the health-care debate, the president yesterday hosted key congressional leaders from both sides of the aisle to talk about health reform. The suggestion, of course, is that the White House wants to show it’s searching for a bipartisan compromise. But the question many observers on this issue have: How long will the White House pursue bipartisanship here? Do they NEED it, or do they need to do it publicly so they can keep more conservative Dems (like Ben Nelson and Mary Landrieu) in the fold? Or is the attempt at bipartisanship is enough to keep those folks happy? Also, what is bipartisanship these days when it comes to this issue -- the White House finding two GOP votes in the Senate (Collins and Snowe) or about 10 GOPers in the House? That's probably the most realistic bipartisan result.

*** Was the Department of Homeland Security right?

Video: Northeastern University criminologist Jack Levin discusses the warning of right-wing extremist violence issued by the Homeland Security Department in April, and what the government needs to do to prevent it from continuing.

Yesterday’s tragic shootings at the Holocaust Musuem, as well as the recent murder of abortion doctor George Tiller, have raised this question in the political community: Was the much-criticized Department of Homeland Security report correct when it warned that the current economic and political climate in the U.S. might increase the activities and recruitment of right-wing extremists? The Washington Times has quotes from experts saying that these groups pose a threat. Said Maria Haberfeld, a professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice: "I am more concerned with the threat from the Christian-identity groups than the homegrown Islamic terrorists." Added Ken Piernick, a retired FBI agent who worked on terrorism cases: "I would expect based on their sentiments that [President] Obama's election would probably contribute to a bit of that," he said. "These people are not rational; they don't think of the consequences of what they do. They're not particularly smart people." Whether they’re right or not, it's clear that there’s going to be a discussion about what appears to be a rise in domestic political violence in this country and whether political demagoguery is playing a role.

*** Conservatives vs. FOX? By the way, don’t miss that some conservatives (like WorldNetDaily) are now going after FOX’s Shepard Smith, after he criticized the emails he’s receiving from conservatives, including those who believe that Obama doesn’t have a birth certificate and isn’t a natural-born citizen -- an opinion that yesterday’s gunman at the Holocaust Museum shared.

*** Iran’s election: It’s one day until tomorrow’s presidential election in Iran. According to the BBC, “Iranians will head to the polls on Friday to choose between the incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and three rivals. They are Mohsen Razai, Mehdi Karroubi and the man seen by most observers as main challenger, Mir Hossein Mousavi… If one candidate fails to win a 50% majority in Friday's vote there will be a run-off between the two front-runners a week later.” The Boston Globe also previews tomorrow's election.

Video: In Iran's watershed presidential election campaign, tens of thousands of students, intellectuals and business owners have openly protested against hardline incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in favor of his reformist challenger.

*** Biden Touting The Stimulus: The president isn’t the only one hitting the road today. Vice President Biden has events in Carlisle, PA (with Gov. Ed Rendell and Sen. Arlen Specter) and Overland Park, KS (with Gov. Mark Parkinson) to tout new road/construction projects that are being funded by the stimulus. Biden heads to another groundbreaking event in Michigan on Friday.

OMG Clara… I was listening to Doris on the drive to work this morning (thank god for V-Cast) and thought the EXACT same thing!
Pat is like our own personal Doris here @ FR!
First Read: 'So far in his young presidency' . . . Obama has destroyed a few million jobs, run a trillion dollar deficit with a lot more to follow, apologized to every Arab and Muslim he can find, nationalized the banks, car makers and insurance companies, and is now trying to do the same wtih health care and energy.

Didn't take long to destroy all of the American dreams now does it?

Sounds like you listened to and watched both Fox and Limbaugh yesterday, what a lemming, ditto head or both.
It makes sense to take the issue direct to the people in places like Green Bay.  I appreciate the interaction at town hall style meetings. People have questions and it makes sense not to limit these types of meetings to election campaigning.  When I receive e-mails from the White House, there's a sense of connection.  Whether republican or democrat, there's a greater sense of being in this together.

Kent Conrad's co-op health care sounds interesting.  New ideas in solving this problem can only make the solution better.  Must have missed some news but I was under the impression that AMA and medical professionals were supportive of reform and even single-payer.  Guess those expressing that view were not the AMA spokespeople.

Speaking of healthcare, a couple days ago there were some informative posts from Canada and ?.  My comment didn't make the window but it was a thought about how much could be gained if the republicans using those countries plans as a negative, were able to hear testimony from actual participants.  The problem with some is their ideology has them focused on their rigid beliefs instead of looking at the good in foreign country health care coverage.

How pathetic that some conservative groups would go after Shepard Smith or any other media host BECAUSE they spoke their individual opinion regarding the misguided and untrue rumors about Pres Obama's birth certificate.  Republicans, including Palin recently, talk about freedoms and express paranoia that the Government wants to own the media, yet when someone who disagrees within their conservative ranks, the hate is turned on that person.  Where does it end and when do the extreme groups, both right and left, stop fanning the flames which have so damaged our politics and ultimately our country?  We can disagree but not hate the other.  It is sick and those media hosts who continue to promote untruth and bigotry are using their listeners as pawns to promote extremism.  Daily we see some of that extreme rhetoric posted here by a few and when I read them, it is easy to know where those words came from.  I watch Ed, Olbermann and Rachel Maddow because they do indepth coverage and discussions of an issue. Yes, they have their more liberal opinions but they do not make up their own facts; when they go after Limbaugh or Hannity, they go after untruthful or hateful comments made by them.  They also apologize if their information is wrong or the comment unfair.  That's the difference between what is often spewed by Limbaugh and certain FOX hosts and those on MSNBC.

Iran's election should be something to watch tomorrow.  Seeing protesters in the streets and the young people participating, regardless of the outcome, gives a bit of hope for a more moderate Iran.
The FBI needs to investigate Rupert Merdock's ole a**. He looks one of those Grand (KKK) Wizard people. Any and every person that don't like the rules of MSNBC or CNN, Murdock recruites them to the Fox hate channel to broadcast more hate into America's homes.
Again - economically we will never function well unless we reform health care. Also - many who have good health care, like I do, do not mind helping others who don't. Isn't the basis of all religions to take care of each other?

It always strikes me funny when people deny that government health care can't work. Have they studied Denmark? Sweden? Canada?

And I am sick of hearing about the thousands of people coming across the border from Canada because they hate their health care.

Check the statistics. People in countries with gov. health care do better than people in the U. S.

Change is comin' - deal with it!

You wished....you are talking about losted jobs and the sorry state of an economy that your "president" caused...you people are good at irresponsibility, typical...you drop your piles of S*** and keep moving. Very responsible lot you are.
I have yet to hear how a public option will not destroy employer based benefits.  It stands to reason that if there is a cheaper insurance option (and how low must it be to be truly afforable) that employers will drop coverage and tell their employees to sign-up for the public option.  They may offer some supplemental options if the coverage of the public system is bare.

1) This means that Obama's statement that you can keep you current insurance is meaningless.  (and he knows it - he's very smart)

2) The medical profession's income will drop (not all the cost in the system are insurance profits).  Will they stay in the system?  In the UK doctors are employed by NHS, in the US will Doctors go private and you have to pay the difference?

==================================================

Alan,

1. Under our current system, employers are ALREADY dropping coverage. At my current job, we have changed health insurance companies for the past 3 years, and each time we are getting less insurance for the same price. Where could I go under the current system to get a better deal?

There is currently NO COMPETIITION in health care, we are forced to accept whatever option our employers select. How is that capitalism? Sounds more like a captive audience to me.

2. Basically, the entire premise of your question is an admission that the current products being offered by private health insurance company's are not affordable.

Are you really saying that I personally should be more concerned about insurance company and medical professional outcomes than my family's outcome?

Why should I have to suffer so they can survive?

How is this logical?

If they are offering a great product at an affordable price, then what is the problem?

It seems to me that you are saying that the insurance industry needs "protecting" . . . and my question is "From who?"

Does anyone remember a few years back when there were massive shortages of flu vaccines and they had to be rationed out to only the seniors and young children?

That happened because of government involvement.  The government dictated what the medical industry could charge for the vaccine.  The allowance proved to be a loss for the medical industry.  So they stopped making the vaccine since it wasn't profitable.  Soon, the government had to buy the vaccine overseas and the vaccine had to be rationed.
Give it Some Thought (Sent Thursday, June 11, 2009 10:03 AM)

Actually, "Give it Some Thought," the shortage was due to a couple of things: (1) the medical industry produced a lot of vaccines for the wrong strain of flu; and (2) a lot of the vaccines that were produced turned out to be contaminated.

But don't let the facts get in the way of your opinion.
Posts like "God Help US" are the perfect example of the far right's potential to morph into right-wing extremism. They bemoan that the racist killer was in the news, and end's their comment with an overtly hostile condemnation of Obama(what has he done to any of these people?). The disconnect with reality is astounding and exactly the type of extremism that FoxNews, Malkin's, and cohorts feed and promote.
*** Conservatives vs. FOX? =====================================================

You forgot to mention he was national SOCIALIST, anti Christian, a 9-11 troother, hated Bush and McCain too, and that those rumors about Obmama's birth certificate were born in the Hillary camp. Oh did I mention he was a north east piece of trash, and I hope he burns in hell for killing that guard?
Obama promotes coddling of Muslim terrorists and goes overboard with punishing Americans. They should be equally punished and have equal condemnation in the media.
God Help US - Obama Won't! (Sent Thursday, June 11, 2009 9:44 AM)

Please provide one instance in which Obama coddled a Muslim terrorist and one instance in which he went overboard in punishing an American.  Thanks
Cjake - We're not sorry if "God Help Us" offends you.

It's your destiny, not ours.
I was brought up in a Republican Party family, but my opposition to the war in Viet Nam changed that as I supported Robert Kennedy, Gene McCarthy and George McGovern, and have considered myself a liberal ever since. Now I am a member of a golf club and ride a motorcycle with friends of a right wing orientation. Although in a minority with both my golf buddies and the Harley guys, they have always tolerated my liberal tendencies.
All of this changed with the election of President Obama. The toleration is down and the polarization of right and left is getting dangerous. My friends on the right are drifting away and I must admit I am in part to blame. I just can't accept the bigotry and racism that is becoming more rampant.
Yesterday's killing of a guard at the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC and last week's killing of Dr. Tiller is indicative of how far we are splitting apart as a nation.
It saddens me that I am falling apart from my former friends and I wonder how wide the chasm will become. I rarely agreed with Reagan's actions, but we were only in disagreement, not violent opposition.
I don't have any answers on how to stop this divide, but I fear for our great country if we can't learn to live with one another again.
I will end with a silent prayer for that gunman yesterday, an intelligent man who was overwhelmed with uncontrollable hate. Only with understanding can we overcome our differences with each other.
Steve Graff "Conservatives can duck the issues all they want, but there are connections and thru-lines between conservative pundits like Limbaugh, Beck, and Hannity (with all their vitriol against Obama) and this resurgence of homegrown right wing terrorists."
----------------------------------------------------

Only a few days ago I saw a video clip of Limbaugh shouting that "Obama hates white people." It's one thing to criticize Obama's policies, or even how much politics plays into his decisions, but accusing the President of the United States of evil motives like hating white people is itself hate speech that is totally beyond the pale.

Limbaugh and his fellow hate talkers share the blame in these attacks, just as much Islamic clerics preaching hate from their mosques are to blame for Islamic extremist violence.
So they stopped making the vaccine since it wasn't profitable.  Soon, the government had to buy the vaccine overseas and the vaccine had to be rationed.

Nice try but your facts are way wrong.
There were 2 problems, as often happens with vaccines, 1-Made the wrong type, it is always a guess and 2-Some had to be destroyed due to contamination.
