Bill Clinton’s encouraging words

From NBC's Alex Beinstein
Former President Bill Clinton and President Obama have had their tense moments, but Clinton is confident about Obama’s chances of succeeding at health care.

Per Peter Baker of the New York Times, Clinton finally thinks the stars have aligned to pass a bill. “He’s got a better Congress, a more receptive climate,” Clinton said. “He also has, frankly, a better -- at least more politically saleable -- set of proposals.”

A senior fellow at the Brookings Institute concludes, “Obama’s approach can almost be characterized as the un-Clinton approach. He laid out broad principles and encouraged Congress to come up with a plan or plans consistent with those proposals."

*** UPDATE *** Bill Clinton also said this to Greg Sargent back in February: "It’s gonna be much harder to get the doctors and the business community to come out against reform than it was 14 years ago… The only way they can beat it this time is if they can convince public opinion and enough members of Congress that reforming health care now will cost more jobs than it will save. And I think that’s gonna be a pretty hard sell."

And: "[Obama's] gonna be on strong ground… The last election showed a cultural shift in America which had been building for a decade, and a rejection of the economic and social policies of not just the eight years of President Bush but the 12 years before me. There’s a willingness to take a fresh look at all this. I believe he should try, I’m glad he’s going to, and I think it’s a better than 50-50 chance he’ll succeed."

Historically and philosophically the AMA's opposition is hardly newsworthy.
Despite a lofty reputation and purported commitment to universal coverage the AMA has fought almost every major effort at health care reform of the past 70 years.
The group's reputation on this matter is so notorious that historians pinpoint it with creating the ominous sounding phrase "socialized medicine" in the early decades of the 1900s.
Well with Clinton behind it I'm sure it'll succeed.  The man carries so much clout.  After all, look how much he helped Terry McAuliffe, campaigning throughout Virginia the last month!
I'm glad that Bill Clinton is coming around to enjoy having Barack Obama as President.  He is correct that Barack has some advantages now that he didn't enjoy when he and Hillary tried to fix health care over 15 years ago.  Barack has been smart to not lay out only one plan and is allowing Congress to do it's job of coming up with the specifics.  Makes it harder for the repugnant ones to attack a plan when there isn't one yet that as being touted as The Plan.

I'm not surprised that the AMA is whining about reforming health care.  They're only interested in their Hypocritic Oath of Profits before Patients.  It's not the doctors and nurses who are overpaid and are making our health care too expensive, it's the corporate crowd of profit pushers who only care about how much they can steal from us with their freemarket freeloader ripoff scams.  Plus we've got way too many new doctors coming into the scene who are more interested in how much they can make doing cosmetic surgery rather than doing real medicine for real people who really need good medical care for real ailments.

Single Payer Health Care Now!
Go Lakers!
So let me get this straight.  The AMA supports the requirement for people to buy insurance, but does not support the public option, which would (presumably) drive prices down to a more affordable level. Sound pretty self-serving to me.

I recall how badly the republicans bashed Hillary Clinton when Bill was in office. They called her a lesbian and made fun of Chelsey Clinto, a child.

I really don't think that Bill Clinton has a problem with President Obama's HCRA proposals. I really do think that we have a much greater chance at getting this through in this administration as well. For one thing, we have no choice.

We live in the richest country in the world and yet we have more BS to contend with from people that seek to continue to bring this nation to it's knees with their out dated selfish ideas.

They were the very people responsible for dismanteling the middle class...wasn't it their administration that said, "there are only two callses of people, the rich and the poor, there is no middle'.

John McCain even said it during his campaign...you aren't a Millionaire don't have at least 5 million dollars".

HCR Now!
Past is Prologue. In the sense that, if not for the Clinton's honorable goal but bungled process, no valuable and essential lesson learned?

I see First Read has been attacked by the profesional bloggers again. The health care reform debate is coming and the pro bloggers want to dominate the discussion.
"Here, there, everwhere"
Whether you like former Pres Clinton or not, he is intelligent, knows the mistakes his administration made on health care, and admits it.

Appreciate the historical info on the AMA Sub Sailor, thanks, I did not know that.

BTW, Clinton did not have an impact on McAuliffe's campaign because Virginia voters saw Terry as an outsider with no ties to their state.  It doesn't matter how terrific the speaker or the stature of the person who is promoting someone if the voters don't trust or like the candidate for whatever reason--just ask Hillary.
OMG, has Pres. Clinton finally gotten over the big snit?
He is SO much more attractive (and statesman-like) this way. He and Secy. Clinton are invaluable to this admin. on healthcare, as they made ALL the mistakes. They CAN take credit for being one of those
paving the way and falling in all the potholes first. Maybe as a result, now there's a good map to follow to the destination. All the explorers and researchers have to 'fail' before success.
As Kennedy said, we do it (worthwhile endeavors) because they are easy, but also because they are hard.
Well, if it's in the stars, then it must be so.
Looks like Billy took some time to chime in -- wonderful (stop the headlines, Jack, Willy C has something to say).  So, Obama’s "...got a better Congress, a more receptive climate,” -- really, Billy?  American wanna-haves have wanted universal healthcare for several decades.  You had a majority in both houses (yes, just like Obama does now) during your first TWO YEARS on the job -- and you STILL couldn't do it -- even with Capitol Hillary leading the parade.

Things really aren't better now, Bill -- in fact, with the economy being what it is today versus then -- it's even worse.  Fact is, most non-liberal dems know this lame horse is too messed up to run -- just take your public appearance cash and go back to the tree house.

By the way, if I were a liberal congressmember that served during those two "progressive" years ('93-'95), I'd be a little irked that you seem to think today's Congress is "better" than it was then for getting this healthcare thing done.  Liberal dems had the majority to do it then, too -- it just so happens that keeping democrats united on this issue is darn near impossible.  Party of a "large tent" -- nah, just a party with a number of small tents (just like the repubs) -- and each tent has its own leader and agenda.  Good luck running the country.
The evidence agaisnt nationalized government run health care is mounting. Once again the Obama zeolets try to dismiss everyone that disgrees with them. They call the plan by different names trying to cover up what it really is. They are critical of known experts in the field that know it won't work.

No one that knows anything about heath care likes the idea of the government running the health care industry. They know is will be a complete disaster for the country.
The AMA issues a statement about the best way to change health care. Mmmmm. At one time cigarette companies proclaimed that cigarettes were good for you, chemical companies produce studies to support that their chemicals are non toxic, butter companies release research that butter is better than margarine etc, etc.
When will the scare adds start? When with the AMA begin calling the president names?
Please include preventive care!! My policy will not cover it. Why not?
Billy Boy sounds like a betting man.  50-50 odds, according to the stars.  Real intelligent reasoning.
We take as much stock of anything coming from Clinton just like we do Carter and Obama.
NONE!!!

Does your statement make any sense? You are right "NO ONE" and this definately includes you, know anything about health care, should speak without knowledge. Now get back into your corner.
Greg in WA.  While you made a couple good points in your comment, you missed one critical point about Clinton's health care problem--the American people and businesses were NOT ready for it.  Insurance companies and the GOP succeeded in scaring the American people and business.  Businesses today realize that the cost of health care is making them less profitable and less competitive world wide.  Today even congressional GOP members recognize that our economy is greatly impacted by health care.  The GOP dances around it but have on occasional admitted that long-term economic growth is contingent upon fixing health care; otherwise, they would not be deligently working with democrats to create a plan.  Clinton's biggest mistake was not including congress, both parties, in the process.  Bob Dole and other republicans plus democrats who agreed that health care was needed turned against the concept because they were excluded.
"Plus we've got way too many new doctors coming into the scene who are more interested in how much they can make doing cosmetic surgery rather than doing real medicine for real people who really need good medical care for real ailments."
Eric is right, there is a shortage of family doctors in the US, but the to many specialist
Public Option MUST become part of the reform package.  If the public plan is worse and more expensive than private plans as critics claim it will quickly become extinct.  If the public plan is better and less expensive the myth of superiority of private insurance will become obvious.

OK Anne, get behind Public Option for the ultimate proof.  Speaking of which, would you care the "mounting evidence" of which you speak?  Thirty six nations with lower cost AND better health speaks pretty loudly to me.
Odds are that we WILL have a healthcare reform bill passed and signed this year. What the final product will be is still a mystery. I like Kent Conrad's proposal of the coop system. Whatever comes out we MUST have AFFORDABLE healthcare for everyone not just a few wealthy individuals or public servants.
The evidence against Anne from Tulsa Oklahoma is mounting.  Once again the right-wing zealots try to dismiss everyone that disagrees with them.  They call the plan by different names trying to cover up what it really is.  They are critical of known experts in the field that know it will work.  No one who knows anything about healthcare opposes the the idea of government (We the People) running the health care industry.  They know it will be a success for the country.  THERE!  IT'S JUST THAT SIMPLE! JUST TRUMPET THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF ANYTHING A RIGHT-WINGER TRIES TO SAY.
In an effort to save money for the american people, Bill Clinton is volunteering to perform all of the OBGYN exams in his office for a reduced price (or a cigar)

Where is Hillary again -

BoBo has her off on some worthless endevor -

The only people now talking about a nationalized (socialized) health care system are the right wing nut jobs trying to scare everyone out of supporting any kind of health care reform.

Read and listen, and you will understand that a public option is NOT socialized/nationalized medicine. And the co-op program now being talked about isn't either. You might be able to call a single payer system nationalized, but no one is talking about it.

Based on the real FACTS about the Canadian and British health care system, and knowing and having talked to quite a few Canadians and Brits, I don't think "socialized" medicine would be a bad thing at all. But the right wing nuts have done a very effective job of backing the insurance industry and scaring a good percentage of people off that idea.
Hey Clinton, what are the odds that Obama's climate change agenda will pass? Because I know the climate changed today.  Yesterday it was 70 degrees.  And today it is 65 degrees.  Almost 30 days straight of BELOW average temperatures.
I think the Health Care plan will help millions of people. But, the republicans are going to distort it so bad, people won't understand that their lies don't describe the plan as it is going to be. I'm glad Obama is out there explaining the goals of the plan to the PEOPLE who need it most. The government is not going to tell you what doctor to go to as the repubs are already saying. If the G-NO-P would put up or shut up, this country may actually rebound from the last 8yrs of the Bush administration's mess ups.
Please include preventive care!! My policy will not cover it. Why not?

Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme!!

Who pays? The other guy!

"The evidence agaisnt nationalized government run health care is mounting."

How about following the debate? On the referenced article:

"And to achieve universal coverage, instead of Mr. Clinton’s plan to require employers to provide it, Mr. Obama envisions creating a government-run health plan that would compete with private insurers."

And today BAucus proposal sees the option being run by cooperatives and private individuals rather than even government -run. All options are still being examined and all ways to pay for it as well. What is wrong with close-minded conservatives (I suppose that's what the word means anyway - naysayers, and pessimists)? Right now insurance companies determine accepted treatment paths rather than doctors - or the feared government - at nearly five times the costs in other countries and to the detriment of small businesses, economic growth, and increasing our deficits, while raising premiums for those covered who have to pay for the unibsured in emergency rooms.
When I stayed in the hospital last year for two days, I got a bill charging me $2000 per night. Seriously. Just room rent. And there were $400 for the five min a doctor spent with me and $50 for one motrin and the list goes on.

My insurance covered 75% of the bill and I fought to try to reduce my share. Trust me, it is not easy. The billing dept has no clue about the services and want you to call the doctors and nurses. Try getting them on line to check your bill.

Insurance companies are not the only place to reform. Hospitals should start posting their charges for each service and let the patients pick based on that. That would be a free market enterprise.

I hope health care reform is passed in the near term. Even people with insurance cannot afford health care if they get sick.
