Video: TODAY’s Matt Lauer talks with Palin about her ongoing feud with David Letterman.

"David Letterman joked Thursday that things are now fine now between him and Sarah Palin because the Alaska governor called and offered to take him hunting," the New York Daily News reports. "She’d done nothing of the sort, of course, continuing a feud with the CBS late-night host that may wind up being well-timed for Letterman in the second week of his new competition with Conan O’Brien on NBC’s 'Tonight' show."

And Palin was on NBC's TODAY, saying that her daughters wouldn't want to be around Letterman, someone who jokes about "statutory rape."

Just like "lipstick on a pig" Sara you lose.
Out of curiousity, what does Governor Palin hope to gain by taking on David Letterman?

Aren't there bigger battles for her to be fighting?
As I've often said...this woman is an opportunist. She and her husband. For political gain, they will stop at nothing. I don't have any respect for her, because she doesn't respect hersself or her family.
SOMEONE PLEASE GET HER OFF THE AIRWAYS AND OUT OF THE PAPERS AND BACK TO ALASKA WHERE SHE BELONGS.
I am so done with this woman and her BS.  I have to agree with Kathleen Parker who was on Hardball yesterday.  Going from being in the media everyday when campaigning, then back to Alaska to do the job she was hired for, she can't deal with not being in the spot light.  Has to have the attention.  David Letterman is way more popular then she will ever be, so she might want to re-think who she's dealing with.

What Letterman said was not the best comment, although he at least admits he is a comedian, but it pales in comparison to what Palin has said about our president, her campaign tactics and beliefs.  And the media continues to give her the headlines. Am so sick of her.
Sarah I'm sure your daughters wouldn't want to be around Letterman because he thinks for himself. Go back to Alaska where you are only slightly relevant instead of being the butt end of a late night comedians punchline. You could also help your party generate some new policy ideas.
Letterman just doesn't know when to shut up does he?

Some people ask 'Where are the feminists to defend Palin?'

The feminists are Lettermans so-called 'joke' writers.
Just more from the Paris Hilton of politics as Sinner Sartah continues her persecution complex rants against David Letterman.  Letterman properly apologized and the creepy Wasilla Hillbilly family shows it has no class as they keep whining.  Just more of the same from the Wicked Witch of Alaska and it's a pity that the media is wasting so much time on this clueless liar.

I was so happy that we have a new much improved Miss California as creepy prejean got canned for not living up to her obligations to the pageant.  She was too busy tooting her own clueless horn about her evengelical chrisitian lunatic fringe rant tour to actually do the work she was supposed to do as Miss CA and that was why she got fired, not for that clueless opposite marriage comment she made.  Nobody has trampled on her First Amendment rights, she's just using that false excuse for garnering pity.

Impeach Palin Now!
Go Endeavour!
Go Lakers!
Palin put her kids out there in the public eye, when she thought it would benefit her political career; now she is crying because her teen daughter got pregnant & made her look bad, tooo bad. If she wanted to keep them safe and out of comedians reach, she should not of flaunted them in the first place!
The only one screaming rape is Palin.  She is mental.  I'm convinced she believes the garbage that spews from her mouth.  Letterman will be fine.  This may bite her badly.
Dear Governor Palin,
I'm sorry your daughter chose to date absolute trash who decided to knock up your daughter and then couldn't follow through on marrying her so now she has to be a single parent.  Maybe you should have tried teaching something other than "abstinence only" cause...welll, how'd that work out for you?  Had she not gotten pregnant the Letterman joke would have been avoided.
Bottom line...you chose life in the public eye and as a result, you chose all the positives and negatives that come with it.
Govenor Palin and Todd had the sympathy of the country on their side when all this started, but they seem to be screwing it up.  I just don't understand why they keep bringing it up.  When I first heard the joke, Bristol came to mind because she was the pregnant daughter.  No one thought of Willow until the Palins explain it.  That being said an apology from Dave was needed and he gave it in his very own special way.  But the spotlight loving governor wanted more suggesting that Dave may want to be with the 14 year old Willow and then went on the Today show.  Now it just looks like she is profiting from this showdown between her and Dave Letterman.
Does she even know what statutory means?  Yeah ask her about it.
It's interesting that one ObamaNIAC on this blog described Michele Obama and her kids as "breathtaking."
But, when it comes to someone elses kids, extremeist, facist, bed-wetting leftists think it's okay to insult Sarah Palin and HER children.
What if the Obama girls were seen at a Washington Wizards game, and someone made a joke about one, or both of them being impregnated by Antawn Jamison?
Would THAT be funny, or would it be "racist?" (...as
ALL criticism, and humor of/about Obama is alleged to be by his supporters.)
Don Imus lost his job for one single instance in which he did the kind of humor he has always done. He made a joke about the hair-do's of The Rutgers Woman's basketball team. He was accused of "racism" (what else?) and chastized even though Imus is one of the biggest fundraisers for children's healthcare in this country.
But, David Letterman can "joke" about Palin's child being "knocked up by A-Rod" and it's perfectly okay with the african-american community-at-large, and Obama supporters in general.
Why don't Sarah Palin's children get the same courtesy as others, and WHY isn't Letterman held to the same broadcasting standard that Imus was?
I asked Domenico Montenaro similar questions yesterday, and my post didn't even make the board.
Maybe Mark Murray will have the courage, and the decency to answer....no?

I think the Letterman joke was in poor taste.  Then again, I also think that using it as political capital by insinuating that Letterman was joking about the rape of your teenage daughter is about a thousand times more disgusting.

"Knocked up" does not mean "rape", lady, and it was pretty darn clear that Letterman was talking about your ADULT, national-spokeswoman-for-abstinence daughter.  It is grossly selfish and self-serving for Sarah Palin to hype the issue by introducing her younger daughter into the debate.

This woman cannot fade into obscurity fast enough for me.  The intellectual dishonesty she peddles is just hideous.
For God's sake Sarah; you of all people should recognize a joke when you hear one, you've been a joke for months and months now.  Get over it; David Letterman is a comedian (look it up in the dictionary if you don't know the meaning of the word).  You say David Letterman is perverted?  You're the one that brought Willow into it...he was (and I am sure all right thinking people know this) referring to Bristol.  Not that the joke was funny; but you have put your children out into the public forum and you MUST know that people are going to take pot shots at them.  Get over yourself; climb back into your helicoptor and shoot some defenseless wolves.  You are one of the most ridiculous people walking around today.
"...Out of curiousity, what does Governor Palin hope to gain by taking on David Letterman?
Aren't there bigger battles for her to be fighting?..."
Pete - Albany, NY (Sent Friday, June 12, 2009 9:15 AM)

Perhaps she wants the same thing Al Sharpton wanted when he took Imus on two years ago.
Now let me ask YOU a couple questions Pete;.....how would you feel if it was YOUR children that Letterman was talking about? Why are Sarah Palin's children anymore precious than the Obama kids, and WHY isn't David Letterman held to the same standard that Imus was?

Palin is not smart enough to be president.  She needs something like. . . a cooking show.  That said, I don't see how any of you can defend Letterman's remarks, even if he "really meant Bristol."  Let's nurture our young women and not throw them to the hyenas. And she's right about the double standard.  If the remarks had been aimed at Obama's kids, there would be hell to pay.
The sad thing about this is that for a brief moment most of us (liberal and conservative) were in her corner.  Now she comes off as an opportunist trying to play victim.  I've always been taught that once you apologize for offending someone, the incident is squashed.  It's clear that she is once again using her children and her family to her political advantage.  The truth is, she is the one who uses her family as props for her political career.  At some point, she's going to have to accept the jabs thrown her way from commedians and others as a consequence of public office.

But then again, she believes that the "evil liberal media" hates her anyway, so this is just another day in the Sarah Palin Pity Party.

<Just keep telling yourself, Sarah, "Keith Olbermann is EVIL!  Keith Olbermann is EVIL!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zkTZe9-ATo>

Where's the cry for outrage from A-Rod?  Hip Hip Hypocrites cry foul like a soccer player from the 70's.  It was a joke.  I laughed.  I couldn't give a rat's backside if you laughed.  Palin's a joke.  She makes me laugh.
To all women slamming Palin - you are all ridiculous.  If she was a whacko leftist like all of you, you would be up in arms.  She is an accomplished person, both in the workplace and at home, and she gets trashed by the obama-run media, and you women don't defend her.  To the contrary, you slam her.  So much for womens' rights.  You don't care about womens' rights, just leftist whacko womens rights.  You all are a sham!!!
You people are SICK!!!!
It was letterman who brought Palin back into the spotlight with his own personal fantsy about a 14 yr old child.
Whats more SICK!! is that you people find this behavior acceptable.I am a 47 yr old man from Little Rock Arkansas with children of my own, whom has serverd and work for the Democrat party here in Arkansas but enough is enough, with every day I watch my party become more and more sick.I do not like palin but I will NOT be a part of this SICK behavior.
You should ask yourself what is the person thinking that would even suggest such behavior from an adult.
And if you back this behavior or pass it off as just a joke you are SICK!!!!
Poor taste jokes are O.K. Poor taste politicians who exploit their own family are bogus.
"...Palin put her kids out there in the public eye, when she thought it would benefit her political career; now she is crying because her teen daughter got pregnant & made her look bad, tooo bad. gepa (Sent Friday, June 12, 2009 9:25 AM)

Wrong.
Palin did no more, or less than any politician does during an election. Her kids, and her spouse were shown on TV sitting in the audience when she gave her acceptance speech at the convention.
The Obama's did the same thing with their kids, perhaps even a little more during the election, because they actually took the stage with their father during/after speeches he gave while campaigning.
In light of that would it be okay to call them hootchie-mamas?
No, it would not.....so why is it okay for Letterman to make disgusting references to/about Palin's younger daughter
Furthermore, I'm sure the Palin's would rather their daughter have waited to give birth.
But, they are taking responsibility as a family, and taking care of their own.
In this case, it isn't the pregnancy that upsets them. But rather David Letterman's reference to A-rod "knocking up" their younger daughter.
That isn't a "joke."
It's a filthy, disgusting thing to say about a little girl who has done no harm to anyone.
The question I ask is.....why the double standard? Why did Imus lose HIS job for the remarks HE made....but Letterman gets to keep his in spite of saying something that invokes images of statutory rape, and pedophilia?
"...Now let me ask YOU a couple questions Pete;.....how would you feel if it was YOUR children that Letterman was talking about? Why are Sarah Palin's children anymore precious than the Obama kids, and WHY isn't David Letterman held to the same standard that Imus was? ..."
J. Merle Stanley, Westchester, NY (Sent Friday, June 12, 2009 9:44 AM)

I have to correct myself here. I meant to say..."why are Obama's children anymore precious than Sarah Palin's?"
...and I would STILL like an answer to that question.

J. Merle Stanley...

Maybe if Sarah and Todd had kept quite about this they would have seen the backlash against Letterman that would have been deserved.  Instead they went ahead and made stupid comments that created a further build up of the issue. Remember Merle this is the same woman that is inciting people and organizations to commit atrocities against the government, and minorities.  The end result is incidents like what happened in Washington, DC and Kansas.  It really makes it hard for anyone to feel sympathetic to her or Todd.
a) Bringing in Don Imus is relevant for some, although a red herring for me.  I *totally disagreed* with the outrage against Imus and thus *totally disagree* with the outrage against Letterman here.

So if you found Imus' joke funny but feel like Letterman needs to apologize here...you're a hypocrite accusing others of being hypocrites.

It does raise a valid point about the selective standards in terms of outrage, and on that point, I completely agree.  But the selective standards aren't Letterman's fault so don't put that on him.

b) Jokes about the Obama daughters?  Well, we really don't know much about them yet.  Over time, those jokes may come.  If we don't learn much about them, guess what?  That's not Letterman's fault.  The jokes played off of news events (Bristol being pregnant out of wedlock, the Spitzer controversy, A-Rod's infidelities) and juxtaposes them for humorous effect.

That's how comedy works.  If he did jokes about the Obama daughters today...well, it's not that it'd be offensive, it just really wouldn't be all that funny.

Comedy is about making people laugh, not going "well, let's see I need to tell a joke to the Conservatives to balance out the liberal joke I just told...."  His audience laughed at it when he told it, they laughed at it again when he re-told it and they'll probably laugh again when he tells it yet again.

c) Anyone that thinks the joke was intended for Willow doesn't know comedy...I mean, really stop and THINK about it...would anyone laugh at it if they thought it was Willow?  Does the joke work at that point?  Of course not.  Some people love playing the victim.
Typical double standards and hypocrisy from the left.  Imus is fired and scorned and condemned when he makes a joke about a basketball team.  Letterman and Sykes are praised and defended when they make a joke about conservative whites.

Just plain disgusting.
Poor David Letterman. He's too big of a coward to take on Obama and his administration (other than the low hanging fruit Biden) because he knows his own kind and how badly they'd react. Don't think Matt will be getting any now meaningless journalism awards for this interview. He wasn't able to trip her up or keep her in the New York designed box. FAIL

Make the left coast and north east the regional party again.
Interesting... if it wouldve been a joke about an Obama daughter how different this thread would be... lets hope none of your daughters are on the receiving end of jokes like these by there peers or public celebrity figures.
When anyone uses their children for political gain, which Palin did during the election, it opens the door for this kid of stuff.  Children should be off limits and in Palin's case they would have been had she not touted her family as "without sin".  This has nothing to do with the "liberal" media or the "precious" Obama children.  When you respect and protect your family from the beginning the media tends to tread lightly in that arena.  And by the way, name calling never resolves anything; honest dialogue does. Adults should always conduct themselves as such without acting worse than the most ill-behaved child.
WTF is wrong with this woman - my goodness.  Picking on David Letterman? Are you serious!!!

Give it a rest will you - Palin need to apologize to her Alaskan citizens for being such an embarrassment to them.

Utter non-sense, why won't this lady just go away and leave U.S. alone.

She's way out of her league and it's showing big time.

This could be one of the biggest mistakes John McCain has made in his life - bringing a small time, mind less, wannabe famous, unintelligent, bimbo to the national stage.

She is waaaaaay over her head, the best thing she can do he go back to Alaska and disappear, stay out of the spot light.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
So here's the deal, Beauty is only skin deep, ugly goes to the bone (Bad Chi).
Sara is going to be important in the conservative movement, yet I don't believe she has the thick skin necessary for national public office. There is also a certain uneasiness when she gives speeches.

The sooner we can get some new voices speaking for conservatives, the better. The future voices are stil laying low, however.

It has only been 6 months since Bo's inaguration, and it takes time for political movements to work out what they want to stand for.

This is a zero-sum game, and David is going to play it to the hilt.
Hey, Merle,
Here's the reason - this would not even BE a story, but for the fact that Bristol got pregnant without the benefit of marriage, and then preached abstinence, only to later recant her position. Her mother paraded her AND her boyfriend before us all, attempting to make us believe that they will soon marry and that this will all end wonderfully. Nothing like trying to push the obvious under the rug! We all know how THAT one turned out.
This was such a big issue at the hands of Sarah herself - THAT'S why the joke is relevant and THAT's why it doesn't play with the Obama girls - or wih any other girls who can keep their legs closed!!
Grow up, Merle!
".....J. Merle Stanley...
Maybe if Sarah and Todd had kept quite about this they would have seen the backlash against Letterman that would have been deserved. ....."
No sympathy (Sent Friday, June 12, 2009 10:09 AM)

To "No Sympathy".....did Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson keep quiet about Imus' remarks?

No, they didn't, and as a result Imus was fired.

Why is it okay for Sharpton and Jackson to speak out in a situation where it wasn't even someone in either one of their families who was joked-about.

But on the other hand, you expect the Palin's to "keep quiet" after something filthy and disgusting is said about their younger daughter?

That's a complete double-standard, and I suspect it is the produst of reverese racism, and mysogeny, especially toward white woman.

Then again, that is EXACTLY what Obama and his supporters demonstrated in the last election, isn't it?

....By the way, I am a liberal Democrat who happens to have a wife and two daughters. How ANYONE could defend or excuse this sort of thing being said about a little girl is beyond anything that is reasonable.
Go back to high school, you drama queen!!  We are done with your pompus outrage.
Now let me ask YOU a couple questions Pete;.....how would you feel if it was YOUR children that Letterman was talking about? Why are Sarah Palin's children anymore precious than the Obama kids, and WHY isn't David Letterman held to the same standard that Imus was?

J. Merle Stanley, Westchester, NY (Sent Friday, June 12, 2009 9:44 AM)

-------------------------------------------

What would I do if Letterman made jokes about my kids?  Ignore him.

If you're Governor of Alaska, don't you have more important things to do than pick a fight with a late night host?  All she had to do was ignore the joke and it doesn't become a story...and people like me never would have heard about it.  Instead, she's made the joke an issue and...depending on your point of view...raised Letterman to her level or dropped herself to his level.

Remember when Rush Limbaugh challenged President Obama to a debate back during the campaign?  Obama refused not because he was not up to the task but because if he agrees to debate Limbaugh then Limbaugh becomes something more than just a radio talk host.

If Governor Palin ignores Letterman then Letterman simply remains a late night host in search of cheap laughs but instead she makes him a legitimate political issue when there are bigger issues out there.

President Obama's children are not more or less precious.  The difference here is that while President Obama's children, for the overwhelming majority of the campaign, were home Governor Palin chose to campaign with her children in tow.

People who enter the field of politics, pro sports, entertainment choose to live a certain amount of their lives in the public eye.  We can argue until we're both blue in the face about whether it's right or wrong for the media to treat them this way but that's the way it is right now as news networks run around like the proverbial chicken to fill a 24-hour news cycle.

Celebrities (musicians, actors, athletes, politicians) do have the ability to maintain some control over how much of that life is covered by the media.  Governor Palin chose to campaign with her kids.  Now, I get that she chose to portray herself as able to balance job and family and that's the positive but the negative is that the children became part of the narrative.  This was magnified by the apparent lack of vetting done by the McCain campaign with their selection of Governor Palin as the running mate (a Governor who advocates "abstinence-only" sex education but has a daughter who has not 18 and is pregnant out of wedlock might not have been the best choice).

Why is this different than Imus?  Governor Palin chose this fight.  Had it not been for her I would have never heard or read about the joke.  Imus had a different target in the Rutgers' womens basketball team.  The reason that blew up was ESPN...as a sports-only network, once they caught wind of the comments, game over.

Me personally?  I didn't see a reason for the all-out firing of Imus.  Apparently, though, once the advertisers had their say and the network saw the drop in ad buys it was game over.  Maybe the same will happen to Letterman, but I don't know.  Morning show hosts are a dime a dozen.  Late night hosts are a little more hit or miss (see also: Chevy Chase and Magic Johnson).
Well, dont you all get it now: It's all a publicity stunt. And he was talking about the daughter who actually got knocked up. He crossed the line though, but now she has to screaming rape.
When I first heard about the Letterman joke, I thought: 1) it was very poor judgment by Letterman, and 2) I felt bad for Bristol Palin- since she was OBVIOUSLY the daughter being mentioned- in that this young lady has had enough unpleasantness directed at her over the past year .  Like others here noted, I felt that Sarah and Todd were right to be upset, and to demand an apology for their daughter- Bristol.

Then Sarah had to go and drag poor Willow into it...
And my brief moment of sympathy for Sarah was over.

Motherly instinct should have kicked in at that point- get Letterman to apologize, then let the issue fade away.  That would have been best for Bristol- but alas, that wouldn't keep Sarah in the spotlight now, would it?  Manufacturing a controversy by dragging her 14 year-old into a discussion of adult sexual activity?  This woman makes me sick.  Like others here have noted, she had many of us on her side for once- because she had a legitimate issue.  Once she made it clear that that wasn't enough for her- and decided to go all in on manufactured outrage- she lost me.  For good.
J. Merle, Letterman's joke was tasteless.   But what has caused the anti-Palin backlash is that woman's obsessive drive to be the center of attention, combined with her inability to string together more than two thoughts.   What drives so much of the passion against her is people's residual memories of having lived under the village idiot for 8 years and the remarkable fact that we came so close to having that again for 4 more years.    I would respect Palin a whole lot more if she put her head down & learned fifth-grade grammar and how to speak (call that "elitist" if you will but I'd like to think America DESERVES that from our leader).
Some people ask 'Where are the feminists to defend Palin?'
The feminists are Lettermans so-called 'joke' writers.
Cydee Franks, NY (Sent Friday, June 12, 2009 9:23 AM)
--------
Why would feminists defend Palin? She is the antithesis of feminism. The fact that she's female does not make her someone feminists would defend. She has her guns & the first dude for that.

What I don't understand at all is why the dumba$$ & her husband would start a war of words with David Letterman, an exttemely intelligent & witty comedian, when they have so little ammunition/wits with which to conduct the war.
