Obama's $100 billion in savings?

From msnbc.com’s Tom Curry
In Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag’s conference call with reporters late Friday afternoon, he touted the cost savings that the Obama administration would get by forcing hospitals, outpatient clinics, and medical device makers to become more efficient.

He claimed the administration would be able to save $100 billion over 10 years, mostly within Medicare, by requiring medical providers to meet productivity benchmarks set by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Payment reimbursement rates would rise more slowly,” Orszag told reporters.

As chief of the Congressional Budget Office last year, Orszag presided over the writing of a book, issued last December, which detailed 115 options for cutting costs and improving efficiency in medical care. So it was no surprise when on Friday’s conference call, Orszag cited that CBO report and even specified “Option 54” as his authority for the claimed savings of $100 billion.

Quoting from the CBO report, he told reporters that the current system of paying providers “overcompensates” them and doesn’t force them to become efficient. But those on the conference call who had the CBO book open in front of them could see that Orszag was quoting selectively.

Right after the passage he read to reporters was this warning from the CBO: “An argument against this option is that reducing the payment updates might cause some providers to lower the quality of care they provided or to stop serving Medicare beneficiaries altogether. In addition, different types of health care services may be more capable of achieving such productivity increases than others are. If so, this option could cause considerable hardship for providers that are not able to increase their productivity by the amount assumed in the update.”

Talk about sunny day projections. Obama needs to be held accountable for these fantasies he comes up with. Saving a $100 billion? Not a chance. Obama's stimulus bill was supposed to keep unemployment below 8%. We see where that went.

A government solution will be many things, but one of the things it won't be is efficent. Any promises of "savings" by Obama or the nationalized cheerleaders should be discarded as the rubbish they are.
Memo to "Just say NO to public plan":  Hate to break it to you but employers are already dropping or severely restricting the health care plans they offer employees ........ and they/you/we have NO WHERE to go now.  Tried purchasing an individual plan from a private insurer, lately?  Good luck.  Tried adding a spouse to employer-provided insurance?  That'll cost you $500-$800 a month, thank you.  Employer-provided health insurance is going the way of retirement policies ... out the window.  And when we're all reduced to buying individual plans from the insurers, heaven help us!!
--------------------------------------------------
You missed the point.  Obama says if we're happy with our present plans, we don't have to do anything.   He has zero credibility in saying that, though, because our plans are likely to just go away, whether we're happy with them or not.
It's just amazing how these numbers can be plucked out of the sky.  And not a single reporter ever challenges the veracity of them.
We see how the Obama administration takes responsibilites for their failures. Biden yesterday when asked why the stimulus bill hasn't worked said "The economic crisis was worse then we thought." Really? You, Joe Biden, take no responsibility for being wrong about your solutions to the problem? It guess it's easier to point fingers then take responsibility.
Nice job Obama! If you can't dazzle them with facts, baffle them with bs!
The CBO is esstentially telling Obama he's full of it.
Save 100 Million???

Kinda sounds like the promise of Saving millions of jobs?

Just more BS promisses from the BoBo Prez.

The really sad part is, most of the leftist wackos on this blog will believe him.  They still believe he saved millions of jobs.  They still believe he "wont allow Iran to have nukes" until he changed his mind and now its "ok".  Or Gay Marriage.  Or Dont Ask-Dont Tell.   Or wont raise taxes on anyone making less than 250,000.

Why do you leftist wackos believe what he is selling?
Is it because of your extreme hate for Bush?

Obama Climate Czar Accused of Lawbreaking
House Republicans Darrell Issa and James Sensenbrenner are calling for an investigation of whether Obama climate czar Carol Browner’s secrecy in developing Obama’s CAFE standards and EPA’s CO2 endangerment finding was a “deliberate and willful violation” of the Presidential Records Act.

Obama (BoBo) has appointed (created) more Czars in America than Putin did with Russia.  When will he rename the racist "white" house to something more appropiate - like the Citadel (in russia its pronounced "Kremlin")
Did he happen t mention Max Baucus telling the new head of the CBO that they needed to 'fix' their numbers, because the real numbers would not pass muster?

It's called cooking the books, something with which the Obama administration is very familiar.  Remember how if we did not pass the stimulus bill TODAY,unemployment would hit 8%?  They've spend $43billion of over $700billion,and unemployment is 9.4% and rising.  Clueless joe said that no one understod how deep the recession was-although most eonomists could have told them, had they asked anyone other than their syncophants.

The government taking over healthcare would be a total and complete disaster.  We have to stop it by contacting our elected representatives, and letting them know that they will need to be finding jobs in a really bad market if they vote for this disaster.
So he is going to spend 3 trillion to save 100 billion.

Sounds like the same math the California is using.

How about not spend 3 trillion to save 3 trillion.

Obama's Lies just keep mounting.
Question to those who oppose:  Why is it not right to have health coverage for all Americans but it is ok to have health coverage for life for members of Congress and their families? Terry, Disabled Vet, Des Moines, IA (Sent Monday, June 15, 2009 9:45 AM)

Yet all the dittoheads scream socialist whenever someone tries to get a job with the govt. so they can have the same type of benefits.

Ain't that rich??
Hey Sierra,
I just heard your mayor newsom,if you really live in S.F., as he was discussing his S.F. health plan WOW! are these figures accurate? you can cover a family of 4 making 110,000 a year for a little under a hundred bucks a month. We have been raped by the insurance companies for decades. come on obama, America needs this plan. I make a hell of a lot less that 110,000 grand a year. We need this plan and an executive order reinstating the pre bush anti middle class bankruptcy law back to where it was before 2005.

My only question is why the hell is biden our v.p.? it should have been this newsom guy. biden is in the pocket of discover and visa. I wouldn't need a stimulus check if my family could have health care for 100 a month.

can America say price gouging by big insurance, big medical(12000 for a pet scan), big pharma and big oil.  WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!!!!

When LBJ was in office he inacted the Medicare program. It faced opposition as well and now seniors are praising that program. Imagine how many years that's been. Other presidents that proceeded him has done nothing to retool the program since but have benefited.

Physicians and medical facilities have benefited to the tune of wasteful misuse of the system. The HCR act is suffering the same political bantering as Medicare did. Hine sight should be 20/20. HCR will work for our Nation and that's the bottom line.
This is a real joke. The US Government, the most inefficient entity in the country, is going to show private enterprise how to save money! Lets see..... should we model health care on the Post Office? How about AMTRAK? How about the DOT? Here's a real winner...HUD. Come on! If this administration weren't so dangerous their statements would be laughable. And while on the subject of health care I have some questions I would like answered. If we have national health care will the government bigwigs (pres,vp, congress) have the same level of care that little ol' John Doe will have? Will the privileged classes (government workers, teachers, academia, certain influential unions) have the same level of care that Joe sixpack will have? The answers are obvious. Why of course not! National health care is for the little people not the privileged classes. They deserve better because after all they are special. Can't you just see the pigs sitting around the farmhouse table while the "little animals" look on wondering about their rationed health care?
Most of us are clueless about how much waste is imbedded in our healthcare system.  It has to be a lot. Certainly President Obama is correct that we cannot keep going on this current track.  There is, or will be consensus that all Americans should be eligible for healthcare.  Republicans can run for office and say that the are trying to reduce costs, but they cannot run and say they are willing to deny Americans healthcare.

Some rightwingers say Obama can only give a good speech, but beyond his speeches we are seeing change we can believe in. Healthcare legislation will be approved by labor day.
The Republican Party talks about “the government” like it is some other worldly entity whose sole purpose is to seek and destroy.

Why all the hysterics?

Republicans have often laid claim to “family values” and enjoy mentioning that the government should run its finances like a “family”.

How can the government simultaneously be “just like our family” and be inept and useless?

The truth is, just as the roles played by men and women in the family have changed dramatically in recent years, so must our government’s role.

The Republican rhetoric on “government” seems antiquated  and irrationally fearful. It is not enough to just criticize “the government” – either think of ways to IMPROVE government or pursue another line of work.

I hear there is a booming anarchist movement in Europe – perhaps you folks would fit in there.

While I am not what you would consider a Republican (at least not by today's neo-con standard of the party)  A healthy distrust of government is not a bad thing.  Barry Goldwater used to refer to the price of Government as the "Beurocracy Fee."  If you pay the government to do something it's going to cost more than a private company because accountability is almost non-existent, and since they can just print money capital for funding is always available.  It might be sold as this great program but it will never cost what we are told it's going to cost.  This is not to say that your general sentiment of republicans being hypocrites in regards to government is wrong, because they are definatly hypocrites .  Still just because a political party says one thing and does the other doesn't mean the philosophy is entirely flawed.  You mentioned anarchy, and frankly I would prefer it to the facist statism we looking are looking toward.

You have to realize many of the current democrats and republicans like to identify with the Progressive movement of early 20th century. Guys like Woodrow Wilson, Teddy Roosevelt, and eventually Franklin Roosevelt are their hero's.  What we fail to realize is progressivism in this regard is simply a watered down American version of the Facist ideals of guys like Mussolini.  In fact if you take the time to look (because your public government run school would never have taught it to you) Roosevelt and Wilson both admired Mussolini.  FDR also was a fan of Stalin's Russia during the 20's.  Whether it's simple politicking on the part of our modern day democrats and republicans or they really do ascribe to these "progrssive" ideals is still to be seen.  If you step back and look at the rhetoric and policy stances they are very similar in justification to that of the progressive movement.

There is a book called the politics of robert taft in it you can read some of his speeches where he calls out communist sympithizers in the senate (this would have been during the 30's)...The stigma of total statism being bad didn't really surface with the public until the 50's and 60's. Because of this there is this period where collectivistic ideals being more or less untested were considered viable solutions to political problems by our prominent leaders.  So now we have democrats and republicans who like to identify with these people because they are still attached to the idea that collectivism (i.e. socialism, communism, Statism, facism, take your pick) can work.

This worries me.
Key word in there, "forcing".
Theres 600 billion dollars in NEW Taxes in Obamas health care plan. Hope the middle class and poor like that....Obamas fireing of the IG that caught his friend dipping into the money needs to be investigated by a special prosecuter.. Obama and his Wife are "dirty" on this, and it is an impeachable offense
I'm one of those employers headed towards dumping the benefits altogether...its expensive...the employees still complain...if I cut it out it would save my little company over 100K a year which would end up in my pocket instead of some health insurer or the employees...dump all employer coverages and make people choose  between a house car food or health insurance.
It's funny to see some of the responses.  Bush had 8 years to screw us over and get us in the mess we are in now.  Obama has been in office 6 months and you talk because he hasn't pulled a rabbit out of his hat and fixed health care and the economy.  When was the last time the DOW was over 8K.  Gas was $5 this time last year.  My point is, get a grip and let him do his thing.  Give him the same time to fix things that you gave Bush to screw it up.
Anita,  Medicare faced opposition because of the costs. While highly touted, it is about to go broke. Cost redeuctions benefit everyone. Starting another entitlement program when we can't pay for the ones we have is just plain stupid. Funny that you are the only one trying to defend the indefensible. In BoBo I trust and will follow him blindly without question seems to be your creedo.
To Jonathan Flint, MI:

Thanks for your response. I am all for a healthy distrust of the government - who wouldn't be skeptical after what has gone on in the Bush Administration (and yes, the Clinton administration too).

I'm not saying that governement is the answer to all our problems . . . I'm saying that government is just an organization just like any other organization - neither inherently good or evil.

You say that government is not accountable - but isn't it OUR JOB to hold them accountable? That is something that can be changed and improved, not a fact that must be accepted.

Lastly, while I enjoy reading the history of forms of goverment, I am not so hung up on names and labels like "fascism" and "collectivism". I'm hung up on what WORKS.

Perhaps it is time for our leaders to break free from the "boogeymen" of their youth and CREATE good government instead of just running from old bad governments.
Like claiming how many jobs he has "saved" which is unproveable either pro or con, saving $100M over 10 years is a joke even if its true. Its also a prediction that not even the CBO believes.  But some will be impressed and think this is justification for approving his health care plan. You can fool some of the people all of the time.

Some of us were critical of Bush also, and since Obama's domestic policies seem no better than Bush's foreign policy I think the Critical behavior is justified.  It's the office of the President not little league baseball...there isn't really a learning curve.
Nashville Fan-so happy you are only hooked on what 'works'.

As they said abiout Mussolini-he made the trains run on time. if you've ever been to Italy, that was a huge big deal and has yet to be repeated.

so I guess we should all be behind fascism. . .
President Obama has been in office 6 months!  He is doing everything he promised in his campaign and that the people of this country elected him to do.

I always loathed George Bush from the time he stole the 2000 Election to present.  However, I never, ever, hoped he would fail because by him failing the country failed.

Some of the people who blog against President Obama make me wonder just what kind of Americans they really are, or are they just the same warped kind of human beings that Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, and Newt Gingrich are?  You know the heads of the Rupublican Party!  LOL
Jim, et al......

When we are talking about Billions and Trillions and you are so stupid as to think that we are only discussing millions of dollars in spending and savings you defeat your own arguments. Why can't you people and the folks in the so-called-media keep straight in their heads and writings the difference between millions, Billions, and TRILLIONS ???????
One problem I have with all of the talk about anytime the government gets involved, things will get worse or the government can't run a company, etc...........

My question is then why do we vote these bozos in every year in government jobs that has free health care FOR LIFE. If they can't run a company or if they screw things up so badly - then why are these people running the government??? They don't even believe in themselves.

We need term limits for all politicians and stop the free health care for life. Otherwise I'm going to run for some position so I can join the gravy train.
You know the cost of that new car and you can compare prices online.

You know the cost of that new dress and the cost of your home owners insurance and auto insurance and can price compare.

You can get compare prices for hotels and airline tickets.

Do you know how much a routine physical would cost you? How about a two day stay to have a baby? Anybody?

When you don't know the cost, how is this free market enterprise? Publish the costs for hospital services online and do not make it up depending on my insurance. Until then this is not a free market system.
My mistake.  $100B over ten years is still a joke and is still unproveable and highly suspect. I do understand the difference.  Anytime someone in government says they are saving you money, hold on to your wallet.  BTW I was no fan of Bush's financial management either.  It just appears Obama's is no better regardless of the naive beliefs of his supporters in his infallibility.
Either we radically change the way we think about and provide health care in this country, or access to health care will become restricted to a few wealthy people. That is not a false dichotomy. A public plan isn't the only way, but there have been no viable alternatives provided by the GOP or the private sector and time is running perilously short. If no one can come up with anything better than Obama's plan, then that isn't Obama's fault - it just goes to show that he and his supporters are way ahead of their opposition on this subject.
MEMO TO OBAMA:  PROVE IT, FIRST, THEN WE'LL TALK ABOUT THE NEXT STEP.

WE'VE HAD ENOUGH OF OBAMA'S "RUSH-IT-THRU-BEFORE-ANYONE CAN-READ-IT" LEGISLATION

OBAMA KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT TRANSPARENCY.
Some of the people who blog against President Obama make me wonder just what kind of Americans they really are, or are they just the same warped kind of human beings that Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, and Newt Gingrich are?  You know the heads of the Rupublican Party!  LOL Kate,Saratoga Springs, New York (Sent Monday, June 15, 2009 12:22

We don't want to see our states screwed up by "I can always get more from someone" liberal children like New York and California. Besides Liberals with money need some place to run away to once reality crashes in on them.
