Panetta's conditional criticism of Cheney?

Posted: Monday, June 15, 2009 1:51 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

From NBC’s Andrea Mitchell

A spokesman for CIA Director Leon Panetta says Panetta's comments to The New Yorker were made to make it absolutely clear that he "profoundly" disagrees with former Vice President Dick Cheney's contention (made on the day of Panetta's interview with journalist Jane Mayer) that President Obama's policies have made the U.S. less safe.

Panetta's spokesman says that was what motivated Panetta's response.

Video: CIA Director Leon Panetta claims former Vice President Dick Cheney’s criticism of the Obama administration’s approach terrorism almost suggests he wishes the U.S. would be attacked again to make his point. Rep. Jane Harman, D-Calif., discusses.

He says Panetta was not saying that Cheney is hoping for another attack on the homeland, pointing to the words he used: "When you read it, it's ALMOST (emphasis added) as if he's wishing this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point. I think that's dangerous politics."

In other words, Panetta was conditional -- not directly accusing Cheney, is his spokesman's point.

*** UPDATE *** More context on Panetta: As is clear from the article itself, Panetta spoke to Jane Mayer of The New Yorker after returning from Obama's speech on detention policy and interrogation -- and being briefed on Cheney's speech earlier that day. So the comments were off the cuff -- his raw reaction to Cheney's criticism.

PS

What ever happened to those Weapons of Mass Destruction ??

Did Bush and Cheney LIE ABOUT THEM ???

Were WMDs George Bush's 'Reichtag Fire' ??

OH !!
How about that 'Yellowcake' Letter ?
Did we find out who FAKED IT ??
Why Not ?
Was it the CIA that faked the 'Yellowcake Letter' ??
No need for Panetta to hold back. Everyone knows that Cheney wants another attack. Heck, he'll probably make a direct plea to Osama himself.

http://www.political-buzz.com/
Panetta said that a truth commission should have been established. That way, when Obama got pounded with questions are his (in)actions, the administration could say that's being done being handled by the truth commission.

Here's what Panetta said: The appeal was that Obama could delegate to others the legal problems stemming from Bush Administration actions, allowing him to focus on his ambitious political agenda. “In the discussion phase”—early in the spring, before Obama decided the issue—“I was for it,” Panetta said. “Because every time a question came up, you could basically say, ‘The commission, hopefully, is looking at this.’

So Panetta is for the truth commiswion to preserve Obama's "ambitious political agenda". From Panetta's point of view, tt's nothing but a political ploy. He's not interested in finding out any truths, he's interested in giving Obama political cover. Shameful!
No matter direct or conditional - Panetta was absolutely correct.

Dick Cheney is not immune to people dying so he can make a point - I.E. the Iraq War.

Nothing bad said here or new quite frankly.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
If you accuse the former VP of hoping for another attack, then you better have the proof. And don't give us this "ALMOST" bs. What Panetta is doing is nothing short of an in the gutter character assassination, something you expect from Chris Matthews, or Olbermann.
cheney is a delusional and pathetic old man. sure he wishes this country will get attacked again, anything to save his own a$$ and make himself look good. he is a war monger, he never served in the military, but boy it was easy for him & bush to sent our young men & women to war.
From First Thoughts, but related closely to this ...

Why does anyone, including First Read, apparently, think it's okay for Mr. Cheney and other rightwingers to question whether President Obama is anti-American, and even imply that he's a terrorist sympathizer, or to accuse him of not doing his best to keep us safe; and yet, somehow it's not okay for Secretary Panetta to question Mr. Cheney's motives.  Even though Mr. Cheney's motives and his value for truth, justice, and civil liberties have long since been discredited.

Given all the context we know, I don't think this has anything much to do with Mr. Cheney's legacy or his concern for the safety of you and me.  Mr. Cheney's behavior has to do with money and ... contracts.  Or do you REALLY think he hasn't talked to Halliburton recently?  Or that he doesn't have his own vested financial interest in fear- and war-mongering?

Hello?!

From this little liberal's perspective, it's unpatriotic NOT to question Mr. Cheney's motives.

--------------------------------------------------
I don't require anyone to be my common sense and neither does millions of Americans either. Clarification of what is ovious doesn't need a rubber stamp of the CIA.

Cheney is advocating Terrorist attacks by taunting America is less safe under President Obama's policies. He has all but given certain fractions approval for attacks. Domestic terrorist attacks are far worse that foreign and he is using the I-Told_You-So method to prove his point.

He is in line with the Limbaugh, Newt and none responsive Republican Senators teachings. He and his daughter needs to sit their asses down. Why is is out on the media circut? What other reasons other than his attempts at frightening American's into submission to their teachings.

Those people do give a tinkers damn about us. They are only concerned with hoping that America fails under this administration--with hopes of returning to power that they once had but proved to be poor stewards of the taxpayers dollars.
Panetta needs to resign. The man is in charge of US spying? With the thought process he's showing by making this statement, the man isn't fit for his office. Maybe he should get a job on msnbc though, he'd fit right in over there.
The passage from The New Yorker reads:

“I think he smells some blood in the water on the national-security issue,” he told me. “It’s almost, a little bit, gallows politics. When you read behind it, it’s almost as if he’s wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point. I think that’s dangerous politics.”

This, of course, will not stop the G-NO-P from howling!
Don't side step this, Panetta.  You said it, you meant it - many of us believe Cheney is indeed protracting an 'in kind' dare, if you will.

Yes, to whoever posted earlier - Liz Cheney looks a LOT like Nelly.  Inside and Out.

Way to Go Lakers!  And how about those Red Sox?  What a season so far,...
First Read; In other words, Panetta was conditional -- not directly accusing Cheney, is his spokesman's point.

Talk about wordsmithing. Do you actually believe the stuff you write?

Should we next debate what the meaning of the word "is" is?
[[Panetta's spokesman says that was what motivated Panetta's response.]]

And black is white, up is down, left is right. Everything is so different in Obama Land.
Leon Panetta is so correct to point out that President Obama is not making us less safe, he's done many things to reverse the illegal, immoral torture club that Marquis de Sade Cheney set up for his personal jollies.  Let's not forget that Tyrants Bush and Cheney were asleep at the wheel when Osama bin Laden struck on 9/11, even though they had multiple warnings from Richard Clark.  Let's not forget that these two incompetent Keystone Kops never got bin Laden in over 7 years because they were too interested in ripping off Iraqi oil by Halliburton.

The only thing that Liar Cheney is interested in is his pathetic legacy of incompetence at keeping us safe on 9/11 and never getting Osama with that idiotic 3 sided box at Tora Bora.  He would love to see more Americans die just so he could assert he was right when he's always been wrong and a liar to boot.

In Obama We Trust!
Lakers are Champs! Yes They Did!
I agree and so does everyone else that Cheney is wishing that America is once again attacked.

And there is just not other way to spin this.
Andrea,,,,,,We can all read what Leon said,he said Cheney had stuck his booger holder into places it didn't belong.He called the Old shooter out on his torture sales tour he and child have been on.Of coarse a crack reporter like Andy would call dead eye out on his lies, wouldn't you?What Cheney has done is make the country more of a target,almost begging them to attack us.Dead eye gets wood when War is brought up.he lives it,he is a typical Chickenhawk,only shoots friends,not the enemy.Andrea,you can stop the knee knocking now,Dead eye won't be upset you wrote about the shooters big mouth and his in abilty to keep it shut.The creep needs to stop the war monger BS and crawl back to the tar pits.
I'm glad Panetta said it.  Cheney is intentionally positioning himself for a 2012 presidential run, should there be another terrorist attack on US soil.  Cheney is betting against our safety in hopes of furthering his own political agenda.
Amazing.  The O Administration is loaded with the consummate politicians who know what to say in order to be sure others are blamed for their incompetencies.  Blaming Cheney in any way for an attack on us is a win-win for the Administration.  If we are attacked, it's because of Cheney.  If not, it's because of Obama.  I can see MSNBC transcribing what the Administration tells them what to report on this issue.
Obama and his administration have made some weak statements, but this one regarding Panetta's comments about the former VP tops them all.
Cheney & Co. are acting as if it is outrageous for Panetta to wonder whether Cheney actually wants another attack.  Its not outrageous at all for Panetta to wonder this.  I have wondered it.  Friends of mine have wondered it.  MANY other people have wondered it, independently of each other, before Panetta said anything about it.  If so many people are wondering whether Cheney actually wants another attack, perhaps Cheney needs to examine what it is about his words, attitudes, demeanor, and history that are causing people to wonder whether he wants to see another attack on American soil.

This is what happens when you put a political operative in charge of the CIA. Can anyone imagine if someone like former CIA chief Porter Gass said something like this regarding the Democrats? The howling protests from the media would be endless.
Its "almost" as if he said what he didn't say before he said it!

Is that a politician or what?

Besides - THIS COUNTRY WAS ATTACHED AGAIN - how quickly we forget - Did the CIA forget about the last one?  They did say they were "watching" him!

Maybe we were attached again "because" of Cheney "almost" acting like he "wished" we were?

Wow - this back and forth non-words "quoting" could be fun - but, It gives me a "headache"
I think he his hoping for an attack.  I think a lot of neocons are.  And they are really hoping that they would be able to pin it on Iran so we could start yet a third war.
See, Jane Harman can answer questions about the CIA. Why can't Nancy "Bunker" Pelosi do the same?
Why does Leon Panetta have to explain what he said?  It is perfectly clear what he meant.  I'm glad someone finally articulated what a lot of us think.
Panetta should just leave the words hanging out there and let people draw their own conclusions.

Cheney certainly doesn't come back later and qualify his comments to anyone, why should Panetta?

Furthermore, if any American has the gall to question what Cheney thinks, he just says "So what?"  He deserves to be called out, repeatedly and often.
CONSERVATIVE CHENEY IS CORRECT AND LIBERAL PANETTA IS WRONG.

“Conservatives” Are Single-Largest Ideological Group.

by Lydia Saad
PRINCETON, NJ -- Thus far in 2009, 40% of Americans interviewed in national Gallup Poll surveys describe their political views as conservative, 35% as moderate, and 21% as liberal. This represents a slight increase for conservatism in the U.S. since 2008, returning it to a level last seen in 2004.
What's all the righteous indignation about? 9/11 allowed the neo-cons to push through all manner of legislation that would otherwise have languished in Congress. Debate was squelched entirely.
Another attack and the "I told you so's" would rank right up there with the Amens and Hosannas.
Cheney's loose lips serve to embolden our enemies, and he few know it better than the former VP. Mr. Panetta is in charge of the agency tasked to respond to national threats. This isn't about one's lasting legacy; questioning Mr. Cheney's motives is fair game.
Just remember who started this p*ssing match. It was Obama that selectively released CIA documents as a political move to make the Republicans look bad. Obama didn't think he'd get the response back from Cheney that he did though. Now it's all starting to fall apart for Obama. Panetta looks like the political hack he is/was. And this man is in charge of the CIA? He needs to go.
I think he his hoping for an attack.  I think a lot of neocons are.  And they are really hoping that they would be able to pin it on Iran so we could start yet a third war.
Julie, Palm Desert, CA

Sweety, the first war hasn't ended yet. Small world view you have.
Dick Cheney is right about Obama's policies making the country less safe.  Obama is living in a dream world that exists only in his mind.  I am positive that the former vice president is hopeful that our enemies will not attack again.  However, he has one essential quality that the current president lacks.  Dick Cheney is a realist---not a dreamer living in a utopia that never was and never will be.
It is sickening to have to listen to Cheney on any show talking about any subject. Yes, it seems that he wants an attack. Sadly, he has the connections to make one happen, and then blame it on Obama. We want him to go away, and count his money from Haliburton, and let us who voted take our turn to change America

CHENEY IS RIGHT --- PANETTA IS WRONG ///

Damn, I wasn't aware that you people were so heavily involved in Mental telepathy. I can think and reason for myself and I don't require a friggin article written by a know nothing nut to say how I think. You people need help.
Gail, TN - Why does Leon Panetta have to explain what he said?

probably because he said it, and he has no proof to back it up.

Being the head of the CIA is an apolitical position. The person in that position has to have the temperment to not play the political games Panetta apparently is playing. The man is not fit for the job.
I agree and so does everyone else that Cheney is wishing that America is once again attacked.

Speak for yourself.  I don't agree.  And this is the sort of comment that would have the left up in arms if the accusation was made of one of them.  That goober Olbermann's head would probably blow off in indigation.
What ever happened to those Weapons of Mass Destruction ??

Did Bush and Cheney LIE ABOUT THEM ???

MSierra, SF

Google WMD in Iraq and READ

There were thousands of WMD's found in Iraq and that doesn't include the ones used to KILL the Kurds.

But you are OK with the killing of the Kurds - right?

MSierra, you keep spouting errors in your statements - by accident or intent?

You know BoBo has defended and continued "warrentless" wiretaps and yet you spout how terrible Bush was for them!
This just in from the Dick…

"I hope my old friend Leon was misquoted," said Cheney in a terse statement. "The important thing is whether or not the Obama administration will continue the policies that have kept us safe for the last eight years."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Or what Dead Eye Dick… you gonna shoot Leon in the face too?  We all know how well you treat ‘old’ friends… More ‘terse’ bluster from Dickhead!
Go away Dick and take Lizzy Borden Cheney with you!
Truth hurts doesn't it shoot you in the face cheney! shoot you in the face is advocating he wants another attack just to prove himself.  He also is advocating that only HIS PARTY can keep this country safe.  He did acknowledged he was for torture and the administration ordered it to be done even when this country PRIDED itself on not doing so and lied to the American people that we were not doing so while in fact it was being done!  What more of the lies do people believe from that self righteous pile of garbage!
It is sickening to have to listen to Cheney on any show talking about any subject.
Marlea Evans, Los Angeles CA
So who is forcing you to do so? Just turn the channel. Try Msnbc, I bet you'll like them.
Also, Clinton and Carter ran around all during the Bush administration(s) giving their opinions. Cheney has the right to do so too, especailly if he's being openly attacked by the Obama administration.
"Being the head of the CIA is an apolitical position. The person in that position has to have the temperment to not play the political games Panetta apparently is playing. The man is not fit for the job."  LT- Ga
Maybe Panetta is not playing a political game.  Maybe he was just saying what he honestly thought, and I have no problem with that.  Just as Dick Cheney was saying what he honestly thought (as much as I disagree with him.)
I do think, however, that both sets of comments were made out of frustration and anger - never a good time to open one's mouth.
It would take more than this comment for me to conclude that Panetta is not fit for the job.
Eric, Salinas, CA (Sent Monday, June 15, 2009 2:19 PM)
"He [Cheney] would love to see more Americans die just so he could assert he was right..."
Those are pretty strong words mister, even from a sleazebag like you. Would you care to share your proof to support this character assasination? Or is it easier to just sit back and spew your hatred from the comfortable anonymity of the interenet and thereby avoid any accountability for your slander?
Cheney is and always has been speaking in terms of prudence and caution, not fearmongering.  He's been a prickly burr under Obama's saddle and he's been effective.  Deal with it.
"Google WMD in Iraq and READ"
Hurm...I did just that and here are the first articles I found:
http://english.aljazeera.net/news/europe/2009/06/2009615145559870996.html
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2009/06/11/DI2009061102558.html
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article6504108.ece
You are, of course, referring to the degraded remains of sarin and mustard gas, which was described as "degraded" and no longer viable as a weapon.  Nice try, though.
It is truly scarey that he thinks only the Republicans can keep us safe. Fear mongering at its best. He needs to go back to his undisclosed location like he did for the past 8 years. They wouldn't get you there Dick!
How many of our soldiers are dead now? How many of us will no longer see our husbands, wives, dads, moms brothers, sisters, you know OUR FAMILY? Where was Dick during the Vietnam War when we lost so many of OUR FAMILY. How did he get 5 deferrments? Why did most of my family have to go to these wars and died.
Dick Cheney has a lot of explaining to do for the Iraq war and I want to be first in line to watch it. Sorry - grief will do that to you.
Dicky knows that his legacy would be full of shame in the eyes of many Americans, especially very bad in the eyes of the historians.  He had to do something to change that by outspoken more but it was a bit too late already.  He has less credibility since the truth came out.
It's becoming increasingly obvious that Panetta is woefully ill-equipped to run the CIA. If Cheney had made a remark like that, the media would be screaming for his head.
Are you kidding me?  This is what MSNBC claims is journalism these days?  Making sure your audience understands the context of why the director of the CIA is playing politics?  Read the comments here.  They are sickening.  The entire left, in chorus, claimed Bush's policies were making us less safe.  Including Obama.  And when Cheney makes that same claim about Obama's policies, he is wishing for an attack.  If you can get from here to there with Cheney's remarks, then it stands to reason that the left, including Obama, wished for an attack to prove they were right about Bush's policies.
Not just Cheney, most of the GOP feel the same. It's their only hope to come back into power, besides wishing for our economy to fail. With the Republicans its party first, country last.
Sue (Sent Monday, June 15, 2009 4:02 PM)
We didn't have to 'wish' for an attack, we WERE attacked under "W".  This is some pretzel logic for you.
To believe VP Cheney would want another attack is nuts, No one, would want another attach. Lets base this on what is going on,the facts, whether you like VP Cheney or not he is not the type of person who relishes having americans killed in battle, Come On.
