Letterman apologizes to Palin family

From NBC's Mark Murray
On tonight's "Late Show with David Letterman," comedian David Letterman offers a full apology to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her family for the joke he told last week -- when he said that Yankees slugger had knocked up Palin's daughter.

"I told a bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception," he says, according to a partial transcript of tonight's taped broadcast. "And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke."

Letterman continues, "So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I'm sorry about it and I'll try to do better in the future. Thank you very much."

Below are Letterman's full remarks...

Letterman:  "All right, here - I've been thinking about this situation with Governor Palin and her family now for about a week - it was a week ago tonight, and maybe you know about it, maybe you don't know about it.  But there was a joke that I told, and I thought I was telling it about the older daughter being at Yankee Stadium.  And it was kind of a coarse joke.  There's no getting around it, but I never thought it was anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure in fact that she is of legal age, 18.  Yeah.   But the joke really, in and of itself, can't be defended.  The next day, people are outraged.  They're angry at me because they said, 'How could you make a lousy joke like that about the 14-year-old girl who was at the ball game?'  And I had, honestly, no idea that the 14-year-old girl, I had no idea that anybody was at the ball game except the Governor and I was told at the time she was there with Rudy Giuliani…And I really should have made the joke about Rudy…" (audience applauds) "But I didn't, and now people are getting angry and they're saying, 'Well, how can you say something like that about a 14-year-old girl, and does that make you feel good to make those horrible jokes about a kid who's completely innocent, minding her own business,' and, turns out, she was at the ball game.  I had no idea she was there.  So she's now at the ball game and people think that I made the joke about her.  And, but still, I'm wondering, 'Well, what can I do to help people understand that I would never make a joke like this?'  I've never made jokes like this as long as we've been on the air, 30 long years, and you can't really be doing jokes like that.  And I understand, of course, why people are upset.  I would be upset myself.

Video: MSNBC’s Ed Schultz is joined by CNBC’s Donny Deutsch and former Republican Congresswoman Susan Molinari to discuss whether Gov. Sarah Palin is going too far in her reaction to David Letterman’s jokes about her family.

"And then I was watching the Jim Lehrer 'Newshour' - this commentator, the columnist Mark Shields, was talking about how I had made this indefensible joke about the 14-year-old girl, and I thought, 'Oh, boy, now I'm beginning to understand what the problem is here.  It's the perception rather than the intent.'  It doesn't make any difference what my intent was, it's the perception.  And, as they say about jokes, if you have to explain the joke, it's not a very good joke.  And I'm certainly - " (audience applause) "- thank you.  Well, my responsibility - I take full blame for that.  I told a bad joke.  I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception.  And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke.  It's not your fault that it was misunderstood, it's my fault.  That it was misunderstood." (audience applauds)  "Thank you.  So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke.  I'm sorry about it and I'll try to do better in the future.  Thank you very much."  (audience applause)

Letterman owed that family an apology, and I am no Palin fan.  Each one of us is responsible for contributing to a civil society.  How we talk about each other, even in jest, is a "family value" as far as I'm concerned.
Geez, Letterman!  There is no need to apologize to these hillbillies.  Do you remember the chants at that idiot's rallies about Obama?  Haven't heard pathetic Palin apologize for those, have you?
Nuff said.
Dave has fallen into the same old trap attributed to people of emotion only thinking and because of this he has forgotten some time ago what decent behavior really is.  It's too bad really.  I kind of like the guy but he should have picked up on the courseness of the joke and I believe he in fact knew the situation and told the joke anyway.  He's a bitter old man who has no business behaving the way he does.  Your too old Dave to be told to grow up.  He needs to go the way of Dan Rather and Michael Richards.
Good for Dave. This should be the end. I doubt that Ms Palin will allow it to be the end, as she has grown this far past criticizing Dave. She was right to complain - loudly - but now it's time to move on. Unless Palin wants to do the very thing she says she abhors, that is: using her children for personal political gain.
Don Imus apologized too but he still got the boot.
How nice.
Why ?

Really does dress like a 'slutty flight attendant'

Maybe she should stop pallin' around with right wing whacks
I'm glad he did the right thing.  What bothered me most about this is how notoriously thin skinned Letterman is when it comes to his little boy, and his wife.
Now it is Sarah's turn to accept the apology and graciously make her for her own remarks about Letterman. Will she?
The age of the daughter is really not relevant. And the fact that Letterman thinks it is, only makes it clear that he just really doesn't get it. The boycott will continue (a sponsor has already withdrawn) and the will be more pain for poor little Davy.
These people who are complaining should get a life. Aren't there more important things to froth at the mouth about. Don't you guys have another abortion doctor to kill? I will be happy when the Palin Nazi Loonies find a new radical subject to distort and howl about. Go back to Fatty Rush I am sure he will have something new to whip ya into a frenzy. I have not been watching David but I will now.
Last September, a skit on Saturday Night Live suggested incest in the Palin family. "What about the husband?" asked a mock Times reporter. "You know he's doing those daughters. I mean, come on. It's Alaska!" No outrage. Sarah Palin appeared on the show one month later in late October.

Days after the announcement of Bristol's pregnancy, Conan O'Brien joked, "It's true, John McCain's running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, has revealed that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. Palin said, 'We should never have introduced her to John Edwards.'" Where was the outrage? Was Conan promoting infidelity with an underage girl?

From two different Tonight Shows: "Governor Palin announced over the weekend that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant. Oh, boy, you thought John Edwards was in trouble before, now he's really done it!" AND..."All the Republicans are heaping praise on Governor Palin. Fred Thompson said, as an actor, he could see them making a movie about Sarah Palin and her family. Didn't they already make that movie? I think it was called 'Knocked Up!'"--Jay Leno

Craig Ferguson's skit of "Larry King vs Levi Johnston" asks about "kinky sex" with the drapes open. Craig Ferguson's honorary Alaska citizenship, granted by Governor Palin wasn't rescinded.

"According to expense reports, Sarah Palin charged the state of Alaska over $21,000 for her children to travel with her on official business. In fairness to Gov. Palin, when she leaves them home alone they get pregnant." --Seth Meyers (SNL). Sarah Palin was in a sketch with Meyers a week earlier.

October 8, 2008, Sarah Palin walked out on the ice with six year old Piper and 13 year old Willow, before the game, Conan O'Brien said, "Saturday night, Sarah Palin is going to drop the first puck at the Philadelphia Flyers' hockey game. Then Palin will spend the rest of the game trying to keep the hockey players out of her daughter's penalty box."
Oh, yes he did. You get the outrage...but not a peep then. According to the new "logic", O'Brien was advocating for some really sick stuff.
Its pretty sad that Palin has effectively turned this issue upside- best summarizes her whole platform - a lot of fluff on 'social issues' but no substance on anything real.  Amazing that she cites the family as being 'off-limits' yet has her knocked up, high school graduating daughter on the cover of People Magazine
Absolutely shameless on their part -
Far right vitriol to continue in...3...2...1...

I still contend that Governor Palin would have been better served by not picking a fight with Letterman and leaving him to the G-NO-P Chattering Class!
Hey, compare this apology to Rusty DePass as reported this morning:

DePass - "I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone."

Letterman - "And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke.  It's not your fault that it was misunderstood, it's my fault.  That it was misunderstood.  Thank you.  So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke.  I'm sorry about it and I'll try to do better in the future.  Thank you very much."
Too bad!  It doesn't matter that there was no apology needed; only the weak of mind missed this jokes intended target. The Governor's worthless politics continue to drive this NON-STORY.
No fauxpology here - clear, accountable - NOW whatever will the right be pissed about this week?
Dave did the right thing here.  Sarah did right, too, defending her family.  I'm a Palin fan, happy to see this put to rest.  I like them both.
I understand why Letterman felt the need to apologize given the circumstances.  I do not understand Governor Palin's constant need to be in the spotlight and drag her children everywhere she goes.  Most people would not have heard about this situation had she not insisted on bringing it to our attention.  She blew out of proportion a bad joke told by a comedian.  He should not have told the joke.  Given that, she was totally out of line to call Letterman a pedofile.  Sarah Palin, by her own actions, is proving everyday that she is not fit to be president.
Ah Dave, my boy, I knew that you would finally see the light and do the right thing.  Good for you!
How cares about the BIMBO for Alaska any way? Old news, milking the media. Leave Dave a lone.
hmmmm...let's see....

Make comments that place the lives of the first family in jeopardy during and after the election, THEN complain when you (Palin) get's a taste of her own medicine after p__mping your poor children, then gin up right wing extremists AGAIN (stating people should rise up on the Today Show).  Where's YOUR apology Sarah?  Read this NY Times article....

Too bad Letterman didn't just make the joke about Sarah. It would be funny watching her defend herself, since she too was knocked up. Sarah has so much baggage, she should be the poster child for Samsonite !
Whatever...does this mean that she will begin to wear PROFESSIONAL LENGTH SKIRTS worn by real women leaders (Check out the Charlie Gibson interview)?  Conditional Feminist

Where's the outrage over the "Our VEEP is HOT" signs at the GOP convention?

Conditional feminist...
David, Thanks for stepping up to the plate and apologizing for your bad joke and the unintended consequences. The next time I make a stupid mistake I will try to make it better by following your example.
In these trying times we need laughter...so keep us laughing. Best wishes, Mike
Thanks David.  Maybe we can move on now.
See Dave, was that soooo hard!!!!!!!!!11
Cue... Rush also apologizes....and I'm holding my breath...gag! gag!
This is really going to disappoint Feisty, Eric and Anita.
Which just goes to prove that David Letterman is the "bigger person" in this contratemps.

Governor Palin had every right to be upset, but at this point, she's completely conceded the "high road" to David Letterman.

It's too bad that Governor Palin cannot keep her children out of the spotlight -- even after President Obama defended her children from media abuse and declared her children off limits -- she still thrusts them forward in the public eye.

Just my two cents worth
Gov. Palin received what she wanted; an apology to herself and the rest of the world that listens to David Letterman. Case closed. Can we end this now.
Gov. Palin the balls are in your court
It is not Mr. Lettermans fault that the entire palin clan is a joke. They all lack class, and they may have gone to school but they lack intelligence.

The following copied from Wikipedia ....
Intelligence is an umbrella term used to describe a property of the mind that encompasses many related abilities, such as the capacities to reason, to plan, to solve problems, to think abstractly, to comprehend ideas, to use language, and to learn.

That does NOT describe the palins
What new way will Sarah use to get some publicity. She should be left to the tabloids.
This makes me sick!  I cannot believe that he and NBC have caved in to this relentless self-victimization by  passel of right-wingers for political gain when legitimate political or intellectual victory seem unreachable.  Truth be told, Palin and her fear-mongering tactician sty-mates who, continuously behave as if they are missing their corpus callosum, have said worse things with a straight look on their faces than what Dave has said.  Take for example the It matters little though; if political points can be scored by dragging your little children into a purposely protracted public battle, the rule of the desperate is to shoot first and ask questions later.  How pathetic!!!
Good job Dave. Now if you'll just admit that never in a million years would you or any other late-night comedian make a statutory rape joke about one of the Obama girls.

And for all you people here who will call Palin and her family "trashy" for having a teenage daughter with a baby, be careful. I don't even have to look at the stats to know that single, unwed mothers voted for Obama in DROVES.
David Letterman's apology is hollow compared to the hatred that he shows toward the Palin family. If it has taken him this long to understand the offense that he has perpetrated he's only apologizing because of upstairs pressure. His hatred is still apparent, he still made a filthy joke about a 14 year old child and his claims of ignorance about her presence at the game insults common sense. He's a bully and only deserves what a bully deserves; the disrespect of all that are decent and respectable. If he wouldn't treat the children of our President and the First Lady like that he has no right to treat a Governor and the Governor's family like that.
Letterman is several days late in his pathetic apology and a lifetime late in being a professional.  Was it his own f-upped family that spawned this personality deviant, or was he merely a baby kitten killer, smart-mouthed school yard bully?  Yes, he has an edge...an edge without any saving grace or refinement.  Being smug, arrogant, crude, and vacuous as to his own shortcomings just isn't funny. The jerk from Ball State University has dropped the ball where it hurts--on his declining reputation.  Had he dropped it on his head, there would have been no noticeable diminution in mentation.
I wish Sarah would apologize to her family for using them in all ways possible in the political campaign. She used every bit of their personal story to bond with anyone who gave a nod and a wink and a few dollars to keep her politically going. NOW she wants the family out of the spotlight...but keeps at it just the same. Next she will likely appear on the Nat. Enq. front page with some story linked with aliens (from outer space) being sent to attack here home and of course, her family. Of course. the woman loves it all.
David Letterman is a better man than any of the Wasilla hillbillies, conservative talk show hosts, or FOX News blowhards.
