Ensign admits affair, claims extortion

Republicans on Capitol Hill have been told that Nevada Sen. John Ensign will admit to an extramarital affair at his news conference at 6:30 pm ET in Nevada, according to Capitol Hill sources.

NBC News has confirmed that Ensign told other senators earlier today that the reason he decided to go public about the affair is that his ex-mistress was indeed trying to extort money out of him.

It's not clear if Ensign will make mention of this at the presser but it is what he's privately telling senators, according to Capitol Hill sources.

Per the Washington Post's Cillizza, who first reported the news, Ensign said in a statement: "I deeply regret and am very sorry for my actions."

Video: Rachel Maddow reports on Sen. John Ensign’s, R-NV, admission that he had an extra-marital affair with a female campaign staffer.

Cillizza also reports that the affair "was with a woman who worked for both Ensign's re-election campaign and his Battle Born leadership political action committee," that it "began in December 2007 and ended in August 2008. Ensign's wife, Darlene, said that the couple's 'marriage has become stronger' and added: 'I love my husband.'"

Politico reported, per a Nevada political insider "that Ensign began an affair with a staffer several months after he separated from his wife. When Ensign reconciled with his wife, the source said, he gave the aide a severance package and parted ways. Sometime later, the source said, Ensign met with the husband of the woman involved and had what this source described as a positive encounter. But the source said that the man subsequently asked Ensign for a substantial sum of money -- at which point Ensign decided to make the affair public."

Let's all congradulate Mr. Ensign for doing the right thing.  And to think it only took bribery and threats.  Only if all politicians could be led so easily.  Oh wait they can!!
This is news because?  Good lord, didn't the Lewinsky garbage teach you people ANYTHING?

We Don't Care about people's personal problems.  Not Barney Frank's, Not Newt Gingrich's, not even,(and please, lord, deliver us from THAT) if it involves the President.

Tell you what:  go back to the way things were done in the '60's.  Nobody wanted or needed to know about JFK's personal life.

Report some news. There's plenty of it.
Apparently the husband didn't get his severance package when senator enswine and the girlfriend parted ways. So can I do the same thing? You know, carry on with an employee, fire her but send her away with a goodie bag and be scot free too?
Why am I not shocked? Yet another self-important, loud conservative voice caught with his pants down. Do I hear another hammer being nailed in the elephant's coffin?
What is it with these guys? If there not misrepresenting us they're having an affair. I cannot trust anyone who's own spouse cannot trust them. I hope no one forgives this latest member of the "Me First" croud.
Was she hot?
Lets see now, as I remember it the repukes impeached Bill Clinton for the same thing with their fake outrage. Now that another repugnant one gets caught with his pants down I'm sure they will all rally around him with their fake sympathy. How do you spell hyocrite.
Hey cidy - las vegas, what do you think about this? maybe this will do him in.
otherwise he would have just continue to be bold faced 2 sided hypocrit
Sloppy reporting. First you say she was trying to extort money from Ensign the Hypocrite, then you say it was her husband who asked for money. Which? Both? Neither?

And should we assume the truth only started to matter to the senator when he learned he might use it to save a buck?
I'm not the least bit surprised he had an affair.  I am surprised that he had an affair with a woman.  I wasn't aware of his marital situation, but from the little bit I've seen of him on cspan and cable, I would have sworn he was gay.  Either way it's sleazy, if you don't want to be married anymore, get a divorce. I have no respect for liars and cheats.
WHAT?!  BUT I THOUGHT REPUBLICANS WERE SO PURE AND INNOCENT AND WERE ALL ABOUT THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE!

And yet he was for DOMA and DADT, wanted Clinton to resign over the Lewinsky affair, and called Larry Craig a "disgrace".  I guess debauchery is only ok when you're a hetrosexual Republican.

Overturn DOMA and DADT NOW!

Monica?
Who's surprised that another GOP politician is caught having an affair; I'm not.  Now this begs the question, "Why does this man deserve the right of marriage?"  My wife and I have friends who've been in a committed relationship for 23 years, but because they're both women, they do not have the same rights as Senator Ensign.  Is he an example of the sanctity of marriage?  Let me guess; he's asked and received forgiveness from his God...How convenient.
What humors me is that prior to the alleged extortion, Ensign had no problem leaving his dinky doo time nice and tidy-quiet. But now makes the decision to make it public to bring shame and exposure to the Husband (not the boyfriend), but the Husband of the woman you had an affair with.

So which is it Mr Ensign..are you upset that someone is squeezing and forcing you to face your failure or upset that there was something you created that allowed someone to put the squeeze on you forcing you to face your failure?
Ah, there's nothing like the smell of hypocrisy during election season ... (to paraphrase Marlon).

What is it about politicians that they cannot keep their pants zipped?

Inquiring minds want to know ...
I guess it's okay for the Repubs as long as they say I'm sorry.  it would not be so simple if it is a Dem (see John Edwards), the Repubs continue to show that they have no real morals only a desire to be the party in power.
It really seems as the political lines are being blurred.  Republicans are being involved in sex scandals while Democrats are being caught in money corruption issues is getting a little weird.  I would hope that this is all we hear about this until Ensign resigns claiming it interferes with his work.
I think this is to bad.  Ensign doesn't have a chance now for Pres or VP.  I wouldn't of voted for him, but have to commend him for admitting his screw up. Problem I have with this, would he of admitted this if the extortion didn't happen????
Wouldn't this be a case of Sexual Harassment and Hostile Work Enviroment if your boss is having an affair with your wife.  Extortion? Wouldn't this be ripe for a damages in a law suit and the Senator be in violation of the law?h
