Boys of Summer: Dems win, celebrate

From NBC’s Mike Viqueira
Anybody out there in the market for cheap metaphors or metaphysical omens, let it be known that for the first time since 2000, Democrats defeated Republicans in the annual Roll Call baseball game last night.

The score was 15-10. This afternoon on the House floor, the manager for the victorious Democrats, Rep. Mike Doyle, brandished the sizable trophy.

"They played like Republicans," said a good-natured Rep. Joe Barton, who was at the helm of the losing Republican squad.

There was much hooting and mirth.

The game was played down the street at Nationals Park (only a slight drop off in the usual quality of play to be found there), and benefited the Washington area Boys and Girls Clubs and the Washington Literacy Council.

One other thing, the Republican staff ace in recent years has been Sen. John Ensign. He did not play last night.

NBC’s Katelin Schartz was there and had this game recap:
The Dems took an early lead in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs. But the Republicans quickly countered back with six runs of their own in the top half of the fourth.

The Dems tacked on nine more runs in the next half and held the lead -- despite a few more runs put up by the Republicans.

There were several missed catches and some short-ended throws, but there wasn’t much else that happened outside of those two innings.

The players kept it civil and were good sports, but partisanship reigned in the crowd and was distinctly divided. Dems were along the third baseline (the left – if you will), and Republicans were along the first baseline (the right).

Why he's laying low behind his outing.
There you go First Read . . . printing positive stories about Democrats again - the nerve!

lol
why did not John Ensign play last night?  was his hypocrisy tooo heavy for him to carry.
Defeat the Party of No and Tom Daschle talking about taking the public option plan off to the table. Those are the points that matter.
Enswign must have had another date...oh well
"They played like Republicans" -- now that's funny!  Who knew Republicans had a sense of humor?  I thought all they could do was say "no."

Now if only the Dems could do the same thing in Congress....

I saw that game and I can confirm that they played like Republicans:

- The pitcher kept shaking off signals from the catcher.
- They said they needed more time to study previous games the umpire had called but were still convinced that he was not qualified to call balls and strikes.
- When at bat, they threatened to fillibuster which would require the Democrats to get 60 votes before they could throw a pitch.
"They played liked republicans".  Ha! at least they were good sports and could poke fun at themselves for a change, instead of NO and here's our plan which is tax cuts.  Nice to see some good natured fun on both sides; wish they could carry a little of that bi-partisan spirit with them to the Hill.
My Own Personal Field of Dreams –

When are we going to start making trades in this country? There are a few players I’d like to see let go in exchange for more progressive, intelligent players. The first to go should be G. Gordon Liddy & Pat Buchanan. It’s time to bring up a new generation of players, since we’ve completely changed management. These two guys totally belong in the dead ball era. Along with many many others who continue to talk as if they have something progressive to offer this country. Times change. Time to clean house. Wolf Blitzer, and so many others are way out in left field as far as "reading" this country and where it's headed.

Need new faces. New voices. It is afterall the 21st Century.
No steroids involved,Just ego make their heads bigger.
FR you might have more bloggers if you would leave posts open and post responses, especially more from the left instead of the babble the right provides.
JUST A THOUGHT!
The Repubs took a cue from the Dems behavior during the 2000 election and announced that they should be awarded the win becaue, after all, they MEANT to win AND actually stranded more men on base by the end of the game. The umpire told them that, if they want the rules changed, they should do it BEFORE the game starts.
Perhaps if they did more things like this they'd learn to work together and get things done for the betterment of the country.
This pathetic bunch of Pubs are so lame they can't even win a ball game where they have been favored since 2000? The tide is turning in Washington in every sense.
They played like Republicans with no plan of action, a lot of offence but no defense, scared to death of someone not like them, lied, cheated and cut everything in sight? If you are going to defeat an opponent use his own tactics against him, that is how Patton defeated Rommel in North Africa.
The Republican's could of won this one if Sen. John Ensign did not lose his Patriotism, or drop his flag pin down the "toilet".  I hate when that happen's. The empire threw a flag on that one.
No switch-hitters for the GOP?  The pup-tent needs elbow room, I guess.
