Cantor keeps up Iran criticism

Posted: Thursday, June 18, 2009 2:42 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
House Minority Whip Eric Cantor

has fired off another tough statement criticizing President Obama's measured response to the protests and violence after Iran's disputed presidential election.

The human tragedy continues in Iran. Around the world, people are inspired by the courage of the Iranian people fighting for free elections, using new media tools like Twitter to ensure their voices are heard by all of us. America has a moral responsibility to stand up for these brave people, to defend human rights, and to condemn the violence and abuses by the regime in Tehran.

The Administration’s position that what’s going on in Iran is a "vigorous debate" is absurd. People are being brutalized and murdered by the regime in Tehran. We have no idea exactly how many have died or have been seriously injured, since the regime has restricted journalists. In no way do these actions constitute a "vigorous debate."

In fact, Obama has spoken out about the violence in Iran, albeit carefully. As he told CNBC's John Harwood earlier this week, "When you've got 100,000 people who are out on the streets peacefully protesting, and they're having to be scattered through violence and gunshots, what that tells me is the Iranian people are not convinced of the legitimacy of the election. And my hope is that the regime responds not with violence, but with recognition that the universal principles of peaceful expression and democracy are ones that should be affirmed."

Mr. Cantor, I have a series of questions for you:

1. What course of action do you suggest we take?
2. What is the desired outcome of the aforementioned actions?
3. Do you remember Operation Ajax?
4. Do you honestly believe the Middle East will view any actions taken by the US at this time as something other than a continuation of Operation Ajax?

The view must be pretty good from the cheap seats!
No wonder Iraq was such disaster, the republicans are clueless in understanding the Middle East.  Even Scarborough and Buchanan believe the President is exactly right on this matter.  Apparently, Cantor and his fellow GOP critics have paid no attention or bothered to read anything by the experts who also are saying that Pres Obama is absolutely correct in maintaining a neutral position.  It would be dangerous for the protestors if it appears the U.S. is backing Mousavi.  The American people deserve better than GOP rhetoric purely for the purpose of criticising the president.  Chris Matthews had it right the other night, they seem to be hitting the idiot button on this instead of thinking.  I trust Pres Obama on this one and the republican talking machine would do well to pipe down for awhile.
"America has a moral responsibility to stand up for these brave people, to defend human rights, and to condemn the violence and abuses by the regime in Tehran".
<><><><>><><>><
Those universal values President Obama spoke have everything to do with the people of Iran's self-determination. It's Iran’s nation. Don't forget  gotten John (bomb, bomb, Iran) McCain talking just as much nonsense.
The ironic part of this Meddlesome situation is Iran is now accusing America of Meddling and it's quite obvious President Obama is right.
The only standing Up America needs is for idiots like Cantor is to stand up for the American people a choice of public health or private insurance plan.

Perhaps, the best support US can give is abstinence. Iran may feel threatened because of the fake invasion of Iraq. I prefer abstinence any day over a “bomb, bomb, Iran" bravado. Go away greedy money and Body Snatchers.

So Eric Cant Nor Won’t Even Try… what do you suggest the President do about the situation? Oh… that’s right you have NOTHING… no ideas… no suggestions… no CLUE!

Just another reason for you to get that smug little pinched up pasty face of yours in front of a camera and parrot your daily whack job talking points!

Freedom will ring in Iran by there own doing & not our meddling!

To the good people of VA – PLEASE…PLEASE vote this joke out of a job next time around!
Those dumb republicans and their willingness to butt in where they aren't wanted or needed...didn't cantor also want us to butt into the terri schiavo travesty? They should call him eric buttinski...

PS: I'll bet he still doesn't volunteeer to serve...typical tough talking rightwingnut chickenhawk coward
The Republicans are just talking to hear their own voices
As usual, they offer NO CONSTRUCTIVE IDEAS
Just Demagougery

It's the IRanians country
Let them work it out

The last time we interfered in Iran, we overthrew the Democratic government of Mossedegh
We installed the illegitimate regime of the Shah

We also helped create the most barbaric secret service in the world, SAVAK
Thise was the Shah's torture police

HANDS OFF IRAN
Cantor, McCain and the rest of those folls wanted to bomb Iran a few months ago
They were supporting Israeli threats to bomb Iran

Obama is doing a surprisingly good job on Iran
But, WE WON'T DECIDE OR AFFECT THE OUTCOME
It's THEIR COUNTRY !
Hopefully, the reformers will win, but nothings guaranteed

Jody, Iowa: '...Interesting, more Americans trust pharmaceuticals and insurance companies on health care than they do congressional republicans...'

Tha makes sense, why talk to the Monkey when the organ grinder is standing right there ??

The Republicans are making themselves less credibale with their constant attacks and negativity
GO FOR IT !!
Cantor, Boner, McConnell, McCain and Gingrich...
Who's really listening besides Fix Newz ?
Obama is such a light weight. Newsflash Obama, Iran is already making statements that we are meddling, when you told them that we're not. Might as well take a stand. We have a Hitler junior in Iran building nuclear weapons. Its time to support the people of Iran's attempt to oust this dictator.

Would we still have a cold war if Reagan didn't tell Russia to "tear down that all?"

Get a spine Obama.
McCain was making a joke playing off the lyrics of a parody song that came out in the 70s during the Iranian hostage crisis. Remember that? The song was set to the tune of "Barbara Ann" by the Beach Boys. John McCain was not saying that this was his foreign policy. He was making a joke about the old song parody. I don't know what's more pathetic; the fact that I have to EXPLAIN this to people or the fact that the people who always bring this up probably think our foreign policy should be based on John Lennon songs.
What an ass...HOW STUPID CAN THE GOP GET...? This is your answer: Just what Ahmadinejad wanted.

It's the Iranian people STUPID...

It's a good thing the President doesn't take advice from folks like John McCain, Eric Cantor, Mike Pence and the like when they're blasting the President for not coming out more forcefully and supporting the opposition more vocally.

What a stupid cowboy mentality they have... this thing isn't just black and white where you make a statement like they have done; it would be irresponsible. The Iranian government is already criticizing the America for being too heavily involved right now—though we aren’t. This is something the Iranian people have to fight on their own for the most part at least for the time being. As we’ve seen from the oppositions peaceful protests, what they are doing is working… And America doesn't have to get involved in everything all the time like a bully stumping through the playground...

Remember the world is watching and many of the GOP should just shut their mouths... Or as Mike & Mike [of ESPN radio] would say, "Just SHUT-UP..."
Cantor needs to watch The Rachel Maddow show and then maybe he could learn something.  The republicans are truly stupid people that are not going to get by with their unfounded criticisms anymore.

If Cantor only knew how stupid he sounds he would hide in shame for 3 weeks!  It really is sad because he is nice looking, but the stupidity is a major turn off!
This is an Iranian problem for Iranians to sort out. They are hyper-sensitive about foreign intervenion, especially from us. It would make the moderates seem  western-backed. Anything we could do would undermine the process.
Obama is above the fray

Wouldn't it be nice to have a Senate Democrat who's not part of the Administration to call these guys IDIOTS ?

To have someone call the Republicans on their lies
(see Willard Romney on This Week with George Stephanopolus: Obama said Iran had a right to nuclear weapons)
Someone should stand up and 'Bitch Slap' Willard and tell him he's lying

Someone should stand up and tell Cantor he's an idiot
(He may not know that)

I don't think DNC Chair Tim Kaine is the one
We should have kept Howard Dean !!1
The President is right when he is not doing anything about the Iran uprising over their election.
I actually think Obama is taking the right track as of now. But when the clerics still give it to the madman how is Obama going to handle it then? When it is clear that this is not only the Iranian Pres but the ruling clerics that are behind his actions and statements? We all know he can take the appeasement path but what about the hard line path that is needed with Iran if the results stay the same?
So what would Cantor do....bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran? President Obama is doing what most of the leaders of the rest of the world are doing, waiting and seeing what happens and least of all interfering, or butting in.

I found this posting another site and thought it was perfect; "I don't get how conservatives can be vilifying Obama when he has only been President for five months, it's clear you are basing your opinions not on facts but on the idea of a liberal in office. BTW if anyone had spoken about Bush or Cheney the way conservatives do about Obama they would have been seen as unAmerican".

Guys, I'll just stay locked up in the Oval Office. I really don't want to meddle.
"Mr. Gorbachev-tear down this wall!"

And the liberal screamed.  they insisted that Reagan was 'provoking' the Soviet Union; accused him of cowboy diplomacy; said he increased the threat of a Soviet attack.

They were dead wrong.

We were also secretly supplying printing presses to Lech Walensa's union in Poland-there was no internet at the time.  When that leaked, the liberals screamed that we were provoking the Soviet Union; accused Reagan of Cowboy diplomacy; made it more likely that we would be subject to Soviet attack.

They were dead wrong.

When the Chinese students were fired on by the 'People's Army', there were those who screamed that Bush,(41), had done nothing to support them.  No printing presses; no strong condemnation of the regime.  He was accused of almost being complicit in the slaughter.

The same people now give Obama credit for being 'soft spoken', 'not meddling', etc.  (By the way, the person who runs twitter gave the lie that they delayed their maintenance shut-down due to any action by the State Department.  No phone call, no e-mail, not even a tweet.  They did it on their own.)

So, which is it?  Was Reagan's 'cowboy diplomacy', where he would not give an inch to the Soviet Union, and worked with Margaret Thatcher and Pope John Paul II to destroy "the evil empire" the wrong thing to do?  Or was Bush 41's hand's off attitude about Tiennemin Square the wrong thing to do?

All I KNOW, is that Obama obviously has some admiration for the former 'evilempire', as he is proposing command and control economics for the health care and energy industries.  These are not my words; they are the words of the CBO.

At least the American people are waking up to his disastrous economic policies.  As for his foreign policy, I am as at sea as anyone else.  I know that Reagan was right; I don't know if Bush 41 should have done more-whether it would have had any effect at all-and it remains to be seen if Obama is right in this instance.

Unfortunately, we seem to be living an ancient Chinese curse: may you live in interesting times.
Cantor, you are a fool. Do you want to invade another country, one that is trying to practive (albeit flawed) democracy?  The one thing we know about recent history in Iran is that they have many internal factions competing for control, but the one thing that always brings them together is their extreme nationalism.  They may not agree on much, but they agree on their dislike of us.  And if Obama takes sides, and the other side prevails, how far back does that set our attempts to have reign in their extremism?  Cantor, you are a fool.
Endorsing freednm is not part of the job description of being president. At least not for Obama. For every other president it has been, but Obama is now the exception.
FR - We understand exactly what President Obama said and thanks for writing his quote.

Unfortunately, President Obama's statement went over Eric Candor's head and he was unable to comprehend such an intelligent and eloquent statement.

You see the GOPs are still use to the "old" cowboy  1st grade talk given by George Bush and so when President Obama begins to speak - the GOP are immediately dumb struck – so their only recourse is to come out ranting and raving like a bunch of loons.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Eric Can'tOr is a hapless, whiny little wingnut teabagger.  He's the head of the Party of No, a.k.a. the American Taliban.
Cantor is as sly as a "Fox".  What Cantor want's our President to do is for him to fail.  What most Iran people living here say is that what the President is doing is right, and to be moderate in his statement's and remark's. Everyone praise's the President, except for those that would like nothing more than to have him fail.
Cantor is as annoying as that fly that kept bothering President Obama the other day.
Even if it could be argued that some kind of U.S. intervention would help the situation, that option has been precluded from both a practical point of view (due to overextended armed forces), financial (we're broke) and a moral point of view (we lost the high ground by invading Iraq under false pretenses).  Note that all these things happened under Republican leadership.
Pete Albany, Jody Iowa and Bev Chitown, all make very valid points.

Apparently Idiot Eric Cantor does not understand what happened in 1953 when the US helped oust a democracitally elected govt in Iran to re-install the Sha over an OIL matter. That seemed to work until 1979 when the Islamic Revolution came to power and took the US Embassy hostages.

With almost all thinking conservatives, saying the President is taking the correct tone, one wonders what are the GOPer congressional "leaders" smokin or drinkin?

It frankly amazed me that as Jody notes
"Even Scarborough and Buchanan believe the President is exactly right on this matter"

Blanket, knee jerk responses to foreign policy matters are NOT in the interests of anyone, regardless of party. Get a clue, GOPers! you are making yourselves even more stupid looking each time, Bohener and Cantor trot out to dump their s**t on the media.
Pete  -Albany ny

Mr. Cantor, I have a series of questions for you:

1. What course of action do you suggest we take?

======================

Standing up for freedom is one thing Obama can do. Freedom of not just the Iranians, but everyon.e Everyone to be able to peacefully demonstrate. Freedom to express themselves. Freedom to cast a ballot and have it count. Freedom to peacefully assemble with getting their heads whacked.

Obama can endorse all these things in a very general way. Obama can also, if he chooses, condemn the governments violence towards it citizens. Yet on each, Obama is silent.
The Republicans know everyone identifies them with Ahmadinejad coalition; and the attempts to camouflage as anything else is laughable; they want people to believe they are on the side of the Mousavi Supporters but we all know their kindred spirit is with Ahmadinejad, who is filled with h8, who is mean spirited and spouts off reckless and dangerous rhetoric; the Republican Ahmadinejad Party only think of destruction and h8.

There is no fooling the world, these republicans are not fighting for freedom for the Iranian people but they know freedom is on its way so now they are trying to steal the success of what’s happening in an attempt to claim they were behind it all along. But let’s be clear, they were rooting for Ahmadinejad to win because they didn’t want the president to be given credit; Mitt Romney just Sunday said this was an apology tour that wasn’t working but where is Mitt now, I suspect, probably somewhere studying up on his foreign policy.

The bottom line is Ahmadinejad and the Al Qaeda Republican Party needs each other to succeed in order to keep others oppressed.
What a dumba$$!!  He and Rush want to see America fail.
How would they feel if another country interfered in our elections?  We need to be neutral in order to be able to have any possibility of working with whatever the government ends up being.  Sometimes I wonder about the intelligence level of the Republican leadership.  Do they think anything through?
Maybe the republicans who are complaining should go back to history class.  I don't think they were paying attention the first time around.  Or maybe they should just listen to the experts who are stating that Obama is playing it exactly right.  MOG!  Are they totally clueless?  Could you imagine if Obama started blasted the Iranian government?  Then they could turn around and say it was the U.S. that inspired and started all this to overthrow the government.  (In fact, I believe they are already trying to say that!)
As for the President of the United States, that position is seen throughout the world as the spokeperson for freedom and democracy. What the POTUS says carries a lot weight in the world. It is the presidents duty to encourage freedom and democracy where there is none. Iran is a place trying to gain those freedoms today. And Obama says nothing.
Cantor's comment simply validate the observation that he Republican Party has become the party of NO.

Keep it up Eric.  Your attitude makes the Democrat's case.
People are being brutalized and murdered by the regime in Tehran. We have no idea exactly how many have died or have been seriously injured...
--------------------------------------------------
Oh the outrage Cantor must feel for those poor Iranian people...if it were ONLY Iraq, then we still wouldn't know how many have died or been seriously injured...but it would be ok.
Eric Cantor is an idiot!!!  I think he suffers from a "Napoleonic" complex.  Little thought process for a "little" man.  the Iranians are already accusing the US of meddling.  Probably heard about Cantor, Boehner & Mc Cain.  Do they not see that coming out broadly for the progressive crowds in Tehran will only make the "powers that be" equate them with us which would be detrimental & counter-productive to their cause?  How did these men ever get voted in to be lawmakers?  I think they are all self serving cretins with no original thought to anything.  I just wish they would SHUT UP!
Cantor is from  that new school of what we call punks from my gneration.  Two bit little snobby nosed brat, got beat up during his shcool days.  Now he thinks he is important.  Another dimwit from the old white guy party.  Just shoot your mouth off, never back it up with facts or truths, just spout off, & when the tough decisions come up, don't have any answers or better yet just disappears.  Sad type of individual this man is.
perhaps Obama should let madam secretary off her leash (it seems she was straining so hard against it she injured herself!) and she can go ahead and "ANNIHILATE IRAN!" as she said she would.  Let's not forget that "Bomb, bomb, bomb iran" was not the only Iran comment from the campaign AND it was a joke, hilsy was deadly serious about total genocide of ALL persians.  the SERIOUS stupid was, once again, with the liberals on this issue.

welcome to changeville

biden = Quayle
Protectionism and isolationism is not what the United States stands for and not what has made the United States great. Reagan said it best: "Tear down this wall". Barack Obama, tear down the wall of liberalism around you and tell the world and Iran to let freedom ring!
I guess the Republicans want to BOMB Iran, because they hate anyone that is different or has different beliefs. It is up to the people in Iran to oust the dicators and bring about change. They are very brave and I am Praying for them. It means more to the people of Iran to decide their leaders. We need to get out of the business of picking leaders for other countries. We don't want other countries telling us who our President should be.
And where were the Republicans during the Genocide in Rawanda and other countries. I am really tired of the Sore Loser Republicans including John McCain.
Shouldn't he be looking for Brittany Spears tickets or something.

Seriously, Cantor.  Do your party a favor and STFU!

NEW BLOG ENTRIES TODAY!
http://jawillie.blog.com
Soooo, why don't you send ol' Mitt and Jeb over there to talk some sense into them then.  They can form another one of those listening tours in Iran like they did here Stateside.

It had such an impressive impact here for the GOP...it's bound to be the central catalyst in changing the entire structure of the Iranian goverment!

Hell, the former President has some free time now...send him over there and let him shout "Axis of Evil" in the midst of the protesters and see how that is welcomed?

Less Pee Wee Hermon, I've never heard a male voice sound so damn whiny everytime I hear it!
Cantor...isn't he one of the hypocritical republicans that voted against funding the troops yesterday?
I am just curious; have nashville fan and mfsierra ever had a job or have they been slurping at the federal hog trough free for all for so long they forgot how to get things like health care and food any way other than taking it from a person (probably a repub) who has a job or even two?
I don't agree with Obama on much of anything, but I do agree we should leave the Iranians to their own struggles.  My prediction (not that's its worth anything too many of you) is that the longer the revolt continues the less popular his position will be.  I hope he doesn't bend to public critics on this one.  More middle east involement is the last thing we need right now.
President Obama, and members of Congress can show their support for the people of Iran, by wearing something green on Friday Just like the Iranian Soccer team did.
Cantor and his GOP party. . . .CLUELESS !!!!!
Is it any wonder our country was in such bad shape. . .these guys are only interested in Power; Money; Control; and apparently War, War, War !!!!
Do they even CARE about  American citizens ????
Mr. Cantor. . just STFU !!  That's the best thing you can do.
The 3 comments above are correct. Cantor is showing that he knows absolutely nothing about Iran's history or the Middle East in general. Obama is exactly right in his measured reaction to the events in Iran.

No Thank you. Iranian people saw how American Government encouraged, helped and supported Saddam Hussein in invading Iran right at the start of their 1979 revolution. They (Iranian people) paid dearly for it.  On one side Saddam was bombing and killing civilians and on the other side the mullahs took advantage of the war and were executing the intellectuals.

What Obama is doing correct. Let the ordinary American people support the Iranian people.

All governments of world:   Hands Off Iran!

More devisive and intemperate stupidity from Eric Cantor.  Truly, we can thank God that the Republicans are no longer in power.
We will be gauged as the stupidest people on earth if we stick our noses into Iran.  Any appearance to supporting either side could backkfire in an instant depending on the final outcome.  A good thing is happening on its own.  Mr. Cantor, why do you think free markets are best left alone by governemnt yet our same government is all so-knowing on the global front?  again, keeping a low profile is currently the best course of action.  Cantor can go back under his rock.
Hey, I give him a lot of credit. At least, for once, he didn't suggest a tax cut to solve the Iranian problem!
