Obama agenda: Mr. Roboto, health care

Mister -- er, President -- Roboto? At the DSCC, DCCC fundraiser last night, President Obama "blasted Republicans who have criticized his administration's efforts on healthcare reform, stimulus spending and financial regulatory reforms," The Hill reports. "The president dismissed those who say he is not changing the way Washington works, laughing at critics who question whether or not change is possible. 'Can't do it. System overload. Circuits breaking down,' Obama said, mimicking a robot. 'It's so predictable. So this is exactly the moment when we need to fight the hardest. This is the moment when we need to band together."

Roll Call has more: "President Barack Obama praised Congressional Democrats on Thursday evening for their 'tenacity and fierce urgency' in helping him bring about sweeping change during his first six months in office. But, he said, much more remains to be done… ‘We can see some light along the horizon but we’ve got a much longer journey to travel,' he said, according to pool reports. 'And this is when it gets hard. Ironically, in part because the economy has stabilized somewhat.'"

Video: GOP Sen. Lamar Alexander tells MSNBC the emphasis needs to be on getting individuals private health coverage.

Pegged to last night’s fundraiser, the New York Times notes that while Obama doesn’t accept lobbyist contributions, the DSCC and DCCC accept them -- so long as Obama isn’t in the room. “The practicality of Mr. Obama’s pledge to change the ways of Washington is colliding once more with the reality of how money, influence and governance interact here. He repeatedly declared while campaigning last year that he would “not take a dime” from lobbyists or political action committees. So to follow through with that promise, Mr. Obama is simply leaving the room.”

Meanwhile, there are several reports noting the concerns about passing health-care reform. The Washington Post: “President Obama's hopes for quick action on comprehensive health-care reform ran headlong this week into the realities of Congress, as lawmakers searching for the money to pay for a broad expansion of coverage discovered that it wasn't easy to find and descended into partisan -- and intraparty -- bickering.”

"The high cost of securing health insurance for all Americans, the top domestic priority of President Obama, has Congressional Democrats scrambling to scale back their proposals or find ways to trim tens of billions of dollars a year from existing health programs."

Politico: "President Obama's campaign for health care reform by this fall, once considered highly likely to succeed, suddenly appears in real jeopardy."

Regardless of anything, I think that the Congress should voluntarily give up their government healthcare now - how much money will that save?

If our goverment refuses to provide us relief from our oppresive healthcare system, WE THE PEOPLE will relieve them of their jobs.

These folks need to decide who they are actually representing - the people suffering in their districts or the people who line their pockets.

What a bitter man Obama is. He has thinner skin then a babies bottom. The man just cannot accpet that some people disagree wtih him.

This is serious stuff Obama. And every move you make is to have the federal government have more and more money and more and more control. Obama needs to accept that people will disagree with him and they have legitimate concerns about his direction.

I don't think so..
Good way to make friends Obama, by mocking people you don't like.
only 30 of 256 Democrats stood against $100 billion for more war...wow...whta "tenacity" and "fierce urgency"

This insinuation of impropriety in this paragraph is ridiculous.

Are we really supposed to believe that President Obama is being hurried out of rooms so lobbyists can give checks to the DSCC and DCCCC?

Last time I checked, both of these organizations spend the majority of their time AWAY from the President, so why in the hell couldn't they just get the money then?

The attempt to link the President to the fundraising practices of these groups is another desperate attempt by the media to make a scandal where there is none.

Pretty pathetic.

Very well said Nash, I'm almost at the point where maybe what the people need to do is just like Iran, take to the streets, let the government know how we really feel.  I don't think they are listening to their constituents.  We need Health Care Reform now.  Their playing politics is getting old.
I wouldn't call President Obama's changes sweeping, more piddling little changes that won't really do teh trick they're supposed to.  Barack really needs to show some leadership and kick some behinds into line so that we do get sweeping change we can believe in.

What's really sickening is how the Democrats are caving in on health care reform.  If it costs a lot of money then it's time to raise taxes on the rich and greedy by replacing the top tax brackets that Raygunz got rid of, plus returning capital gains tax rates back to regular income tax rates.  Cutting capital tax rates for the rich and greedy was the dumbest thing ever done.

I liked how Ed Schultz was on fire yesterday about Tom Daschle caving in on the public option for health care.  The Democrats are going to have to grow a pair and just push through the public health care option regardless of cost, take it out of the hides of the deadbeat rich and greedy.  Plus I don't see them talking about those covered by the public plan paying into it to help cover those big costs.  Still if we don't have meaningful health care reform then it's better to have none at all.  That way the problem will get worse and then people will get more behind the public option fix.

Great to see President Obama right now on MSNBC tv.

In Obama We Trust!
Courtney believes that government should basically bud out.So I presume he/ she wants the status quo where corp greed continues to line their pockets, have unaffordable hlthcare, forget using medicare when you reach 65, tax cuts for the wlthiest only, lay-offs for teachers, police and firemen, crumbling infrastructure and so forth but Courtney thinks how our dare our POTUS speak out against the less than 30% who will never see the damage the party of NO caused this country. You and others are the enablers of past failures. Obama is just cleaning up their mess.
Good for our CIC, stepping up to the plate, cracking jobs.  Give me a break, after all the crap Repukes fling his way, this was well deserved.

So now Iran is  blaming the US for their problems?  This is a corrupt government, has been forever, and I hope the people will stay strong in their beliefs, fight for their rights.  All indications are these people have had ENOUGH!  Just like we did here in our country.
Paul Wolfowitz Ple-e-e-e-ease a criminal from the world bank and mass murder in accordance with Bush Cheney  Right wing dings please stop eulogizing
Ronald Reagan, a President who started this whole devolution of US going into a country stand on the corner with a basket
No money for closing the Guantanamo detainee prison and sets tough restrictions on the transfer of its inmates. What a bunch of cowards you wing dings are. Yet. want to “meddle” in Iran. STUF
Like Perot said… "We have to go around the world with a tambourine and a tin cup." That is ridiculous

Courtney Watkins, NY - So, it's ok for them to blast any idea the President has, with no back up plan or new idea, but if he calls them on it, he's thin skinned? President Obama has said on many occasions, he knows some will not agree with him and that's ok, but at least come up with an idea, a plan, something! To sit and criticize with no solution of your own speaks volumes! (oh, and the same old, same old tax cut isn't a plan)
Domo arigato, Pres. Roboto.
I am amazed at how little information the loud mouthed critics have about everything. I spot outright lies and inconsistencies daily.

Criticism has become a SPORT among critics and pundits.

Where is the team playing attitude that we need in today's times.

Also the President is right in his approach to Iran. Trust him. He has a pulse on how to treat foreign nations.

The McCains and Pences of the world do not have the intelligence,  empathy or understanding to deal with the Mid-east.

Get that list to us Anita!!...we need to know who goes against single payer or universal health and post it on every sensible board out there...

Let's take it to the people so they can take it to the polls and weed out the hypocrites.

If the republicans and those in the pockets of the insurance companies rape this plan President Obama
should veto it.
It is too important for these politicians to play their games.
Why doesn't he tell the republicans who have become our most dangerous domestic terrorists, to go fly
a kite (am putting it mildly)
NO MORE TAXES.

'NO MORE TAXES' TO PROVIDE FREE HEALTHCARE TO SOME TWELVE MILLION ILLEGAL-IMMIGRANTS ALREADY IN THIS COUNTRY.

'NO MORE TAXES' TO ATTRACT MILLIONS MORE ILLEGAL-IMMIGRANTS TO COME HERE FOR FREE HEALTHCARE.

'NO MORE TAXES' FOR OBAMA'S HEALTHCARE SCAM.
I would love to see a private sector only health care system. Unfortunately their past performance of irrisponsible and greedy behavior makes me wonder if a public option isn't necessary to force the private companies to do what they should be willing to do on their own. I dislike regulation and the govt. into things as much as anyone else but I realize that when entities are irresponsible to the people's good that regulation or some public control may be necessary.
that would be the Democrats AND the Republicans
Regarding the Prez's "reform" of the financials. I'm sorry, Mr. President, but I disagree.

What his plan really does is say to intitutions, "Don't worry, we got your back. We'll bail you out the next time it happens". And these companies will have lower funding costs so they can get even bigger. What this will mean is the large "too big to fail" institutions getting even bigger, and the smaller community institutions not able to compete. Hmm, <sniff, sniff> smells like monopoly to me. The way to fight a monopoly is competiton.

And his plan does nothing to address the crux of the problem, Fannie and Freddie.

To some out there, Bo took a mighty swing and the ball is in the outfield stands, to me, Bo took a mighty swing, and the ball is in the catchers mitt.
I have to cringe at the comments of some on this board-I WANT FREE HEALTH CARE.  I DON'T CARE WHAT IT COSTS!!!
Get real-we can't afford it.  Even if we could, there is no guarantee that it would be a good idea.

Look, folks, the problem with anything 'free' is that it is not-free, that is. why in the world should your neighbor be able to bang on your door and demand that you pay their doctor bills?  Or watch their children, or pay their mortgages, for that matter?

I'll pay mine, you pay yours.
GM --- Government Motors.

WILL CHEVY CHANGE ITS TRADEMARK SYMBOL TO A RED STAR?

Fascism is us!
The president should forget about bipartianship. If he has enough Democratic votes & perhaps 1-2 Repubs pass the damn bill for a public option for health care.  He has a mandate and this will be the ONLY time to do this.  the "NO" party will always say just that.  I pray the Democrats will show some guts and vote for this plan.

How about "No More CAPS lock Postings by anyone"...that's change we can all believe in!

The tired fannie and freddy angle again eh?  if you want the crux of the problem, it was the credit default swaps and derivitaves that companies like FM FM AIG were able to buy that couldn't be regulated that were the issue.  Some genius figured that by moving this pile of paper into this document we can make more money, and then sold their new document to the highest bidder with no regard to financial stability or integrity.

lack of regulation or lack of knowledge how to regulate this market was the crux of the financial meltdown.  not FM/FM/AIG/citi/any company.  it was the new tool on the table that wasn't tested and true...

You are so silly, critical of a plan you havn't even seen and won't see for a while since it is in discussion stages with several proposals in both the House and Senate.
Obama has asked for a Health Care bill by the end of the year.
If you are serious about getting certin thing in or out of the bill ... direct your comments to your repersentavies in the House and Senate. They are wrighting the bill, not Obama.
Let's take it to the people so they can take it to the polls and weed out the hypocrites.

There goes all those non-communist democrats Rahm rounded up so democrats could control both houses. Oh well....
Amazing that BoBo applauds the "vigerous debate" among the violence and protesting in Iran, but will not accept any debate here at home. Questions on  policy is the American way. BoBo is so thinned skinned that he can't take any critism even within his own party. Shows you how really arrogent and out of touch he is. Yet you lemmings posting here will blindly follow him off a cliff. Eventually he will find out that he can't take his ball and go home when he doesn't get his way. Democracy does not mean do as I say or I will bash you like BoBo seems to belive. Time for him to grow up.
reality of how money, influence and governance interact here
---------------------------------------------------
Money and influence - frankly that is how our government works. If you have money, dole it out, you have influence. Downright scary. So for the majority without money or influence, they will never get the government to help them out. And this is what you are seeing right now.

Health care - forget it the insurance and drug lobbyists will never let this happen. Money and influence.

Energy - forget it the oil lobbyists will never let it happen. Money and influence.

Nothing will improve, nothing will happen because of money and influence.

We need government for the people - support term limits and no lobbyists. And then get some stuff done. We need government for the people.
