First thoughts: Ramping up the rhetoric

*** Ramping up the rhetoric: As the violence and protests escalated in Iran on Saturday, President Obama stepped up his criticism about what’s happening there. “The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching,” he said in a statement. “We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost. We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights.” But the toughest domestic political rhetoric on Iran is coming from Republicans. This is one of those cases where Democrats and the White House are wondering what the reaction would be if the roles were reversed -- i.e., Democrats criticizing a GOP administration’s response on foreign policy. Indeed, Republicans regularly beat up Democrats for supposedly politicizing international issues (do remember that the establishment Democratic Party didn’t start truly criticizing the situation in Iraq until two-plus years after the war began). But who’s politicizing now? Also, it's worth noting that the criticism from Republicans is NOT universal. In fact, the GOP establishment on this issue is more divided than the coverage is suggesting.

Video: Former foreign policy adviser to President George W. Bush, Dan Senor, discusses whether President Obama's statements to the Iranian government have been delivered with enough strength to convince the Iranian people that America supports them.

*** With friends like these…: So let's get this straight: Barack Obama won last year’s presidential election by seven percentage points (53%-46%) campaigning, in part, for some form of universal health care; his party is about to have 60 votes in the Senate; polls show the country is receptive to overhauling health care; and the president's approval rating is between 56-60%. But Senate Democrats, like Dianne Feinstein, now say that Obama might not have the votes to pass health care? "I think there's a lot of concern in the Democratic caucus," she said on Sunday, per the AP. The New Republic’s Jonathan Chait may very well have been right a couple of months ago, when he wrote that Dem-controlled Congresses (during Carter and Clinton) have tended to handcuff Democratic presidents, and that may be happening now. Does anyone think that if a Republican president wanted health-care reform and had a GOP-controlled Congress and 60 Republicans in the Senate, that the reform wouldn’t pass?

*** Good news for Dems on health care? After a week of mostly bad news, advocates for a public/government option got some good news on Sunday, when the aforementioned CBS/NYT poll showed 72% backing a government-administered health insurance plan, mirroring what our recent NBC/WSJ poll found. The CBS/NYT survey also “found that most Americans would be willing to pay higher taxes so everyone could have health insurance and that they said the government could do a better job of holding down health-care costs than the private sector.” Yet a GOP Resurgent Republic poll is out pushing back a bit. According to the poll, more than eight in 10 respondents are very or somewhat satisfied with their care, and 52% say they prefer that their taxes not be increased, even if it means that NOT all Americans get health insurance. One thing to keep in mind on health care polling is that you can always get a result to back up your position on the overall issue. Of course no one wants their taxes increased; of course no one wants to see the best parts of their health insurance changed. So what's the right answer? As one Republican aide put it in an email over the weekend: Everyone likes ice cream, but not everyone likes rum-raisin ice cream. So it’s figuring out the flavor that's difficult. One thing adding to the pressure for Democrats is history and the need to show the country a change. A public/government option may be the only way voters touch and feel "change" in health care.

Video: The very latest on the crisis in Iran with NBC's Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel. Then, an analysis of President Obama's on-going domestic challenges with the economy and health care reform.

*** Prescription drugs and tobacco: Sticking with health care, the Obama administration and key Senate Dems seemed pretty fired up over PhRMA's decision to lower the cost of prescription drugs. "After weeks of secret talks, the pharmaceutical industry trade group voted Friday to dedicate $80 billion to lowering the price of medicines sold to seniors and the government. The unusual offer by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) is part of its effort to convince skeptical lawmakers that it backs major health-care legislation.” The president will tout this announcement today at noon ET at the White House. Also today, at 2:00 pm ET, Obama signs into the law the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.

*** Stimulus politics: By the way, today’s piece in the Washington Post about the economy and the stimulus will be a boon to Republican press secretaries today. “The likelihood of severe unemployment extending into the 2010 midterm elections and beyond poses a significant political hurdle to President Obama and congressional Democrats, who are already under fire for what critics label profligate spending,” the paper writes. “Continuing high unemployment rates would undercut the fundamental argument behind much of that spending: the promise that it will create new jobs and improve the prospects of working Americans, which Obama has called the ultimate measure of a healthy economy.”

*** You gotta know when to hold’em, know when to fold’em: Back in April, we wrote that Norm Coleman -- by taking his appeal to the Minnesota Supreme Court and delaying what seems to be the inevitable -- lost his chance to bow out gracefully. Now with the state Supreme Court’s ruling perhaps days away, Matt Bai made an interesting observation in the New York Times magazine. “It used to be that when a candidate lost by a few suspect votes, the first question that arose was whether he would seek a rematch… Now, it seems, the first question anyone asks — at least since the 2000 presidential quagmire — is for how long you intend to fight the results in court.” Bai then makes this conclusion about American society in general: Fewer and fewer people are good losers. “Being fired from a job becomes the beginning of a negotiation, while a routine school suspension instantly goes to appeal. In part, this is probably the inevitable reckoning for a culture that gives trophies to every Little Leaguer because, as the saying goes, we’re all winners.”

*** Kennedy goes to bat for Dodd: In Connecticut, Ted Kennedy has cut a TV ad for vulnerable Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd, who’s up for re-election next year. “Quality health care as a fundamental right for all Americans has been the cause of my life, and Chris Dodd has been my closest ally in this fight,” Kennedy says to the camera in the ad. “Today more than ever, we have a real opportunity to bring healthcare reform to Connecticut and all across America, and I believe that with Chris Dodd’s leadership, our families will finally have accessible, affordable health care.” It's rare to see any glimpse of Kennedy on camera, so no doubt this was the ultimate favor for Dodd to ask. Follow this 2009 push carefully by Dodd. One gets the sense he's pulling out all the stops this year to see if he can improve his changes significantly this year. If he can't, he's got plenty of time to change his mind about re-election, right?

Good Morning Everybody… hope you had a Great Weekend!

I know I’m FIRED UP & ready to go!

Nice shout out from the Prez there Friday night Chuck!  How awesome is it that we have a President who is not only extremely intelligent but also has an amazing sense of humor!  Whew… sure is refreshing after the last 8 years of CLOWNS who weren’t very FUNNY at all!

Over the weekend I kept thinking about this ‘cage match’ that’s been set up on the healthcare issue.  Many of you on here have shared your ‘health care horror stories’ and lord knows I have my share but the one thing I haven’t seen come up is this:

A couple of years ago I had minor foot surgery and my insurance was BCBS  - PPO.  I was in the hospital for all of 5 ½ hours – not days! And when I received my bill it was $12K – Following along so far? I’m trying to make it as easy as possible for the Party of NO to comprehend… so the rest of you please bear with me  ;0)

Well here’s the rub – since I had BCBS which is considered a ‘preferred provider’ by this particular hospital they reduced the bill to 4K!  Which is the amount that BCBS paid them.  Case closed! Yo Righties… you still following along here?

Now stop & think for a minute… had I NOT had insurance – I would have been on the hook for the ENTIRE 12k! Got it there Party of NO?

Now can someone please explain to me how this is FAIR?  I’m waiting…. ***yawn***

If providers will settle for a 1/3 from big insurance why the hell won’t they accept it from Clara the Citizen??

Healthcare MUST no longer be for PROFIT – PERIOD!

And if it means my taxes go up to help out my fellow citizens I DON’T CARE!

What I do care about is making sure every citizen of this country has access to affordable quality health care!

Like I told you ‘fiscal conservatives’… definition being = selfish - self centered - greedy b@stards last week…

Money can’t buy you happiness and BOY don’t you prove that to be TRUE everyday around here…

As my late grandmother used to say… people like you cry you’re starving with a loaf of bread under each arm!!!

*** Well, we guess that’s settled then: In Iran today, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told a gathering at the Tehran University that the presidential election was fair and transparent and that all four candidates stand firmly behind the Islamic Republic, NBC’s Ali Arouzi reports.

It is unfair to criticize Domenico about his lead-in when the rest of us can not predict what will happen in Iran.  But it is fair to say that it is not settled.  Sunday the streets were reportedly quiet, but that is not to say that it is over.  Perhaps both sides are having strategy meetings or maybe back-door negotiations. Both sides have too much to lose to let this continue as it has for the past week.  The Ayatollah has the military.  The reformers have the support of a large number of the people.  More violence is being reported this morning.  It’s time to pray for the freedom fighters in Iran.

The Persian culture is very different from the Chinese culture.  I suspect the Iranians will move to an economic struggle with strikes in the oil industry and sanitation industry.  That is much harder for the government to fight.  But it is clear to me…It ain’t settled yet.

Stupid Pills

Stupid pills are pills you take and lose 10 I.Q. points.  Conservatives are taking them by the hand full.  Case in point: Senator Lindsey Graham thinks our President is too timid.  Does the Senator not realize that Obama will need to negotiate with Iran, regardless of the outcome?  My only explanation is that Lindsey Graham has been taking too many stupid pills and is now…stupid.

Ugly Pills

They work a lot like stupid pills.  Pat Buchanan has been taking a stupid and an ugly pill for years…and they are working!
A few words of wisdom from one of my favorite historical figures, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. -

"I believe in the supreme worth of the individual and in his right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I believe that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obligation; every possession, a duty. I believe that the law was made for man and not man for the law; that government is the servant of the people and not their master. I believe in the dignity of labor, whether with head or hand; that the world owes no man a living but that it owes every man an opportunity to make a living. I believe that thrift is essential to well ordered living and that economy is a prime requisite of a sound financial structure, whether in government, business or personal affairs. I believe that truth and justice are fundamental to an enduring social order. I believe in the sacredness of a promise, that a man's word should be as good as his bond; that character — not wealth or power or position — is of supreme worth."

For A Moment Like This, Some People Wait A Lifetime

President Obama has a fight on his hands with healthcare. His fight will be with the democrats. But he's going to win this fight. With our help. You just wait & see. Send money, protest, call your reps.
Does McCain and his fellow neo-cons want Obama to order some sort of nuclear strike? Do they realize this would kill the mullahs as well as the almighty protestors?

Just Thinking…

Watched Meet The Press again on yesterday morning…I don’t know why I keep torturing myself, but yesterday will be the last time that I watch it. David Gregory is a lousy host and he is certainly trying to look out for his party.  Nina Easton and Chuck Todd’s interview was not as good as it could have been.

David had old information regarding the President’s poll numbers; they are now favorable on health Care Reform of 73%. He discussed old poll numbers. It was rather shoddy. Nina Easton and fortune probably needed a little publicity.

Her opinions on what the president needs to do are amazing. Hell I never knew who she was. Many straw bosses and none that was qualified to run for the office of CIC, but now qualify to give advice.

There are many. Many Americans that happen to think that the president is doing the right thing in the handling of Iran. Many that continue to voice their opinions can do so but leave the “what the president should be saying or doing” BS out of it. This isn’t a campaign for re-election that’s happening, there are thousands of lives at stake.

The republicans and some Democrats don’t give a tinker’s damn about those people over there, voting rights,  if it was so then the election of 2000 in this country wouldn’t have stood. Both Democrats and Republicans are nothing more than a bunch of charlatans.

There was so much voter suppression going on in this country that the last election had to have Federal Marshals available, human rights attorneys and you name it to ensure that “voter” irregularities wasn’t happening at the polls.

How soon do we forget? The republicans that are speaking out should be ashamed. They don’t give a damn about human lives, The Bush administration branded Iran as the “axis of evil” and John McCain’s little tune on the campaign trail actually speaks volumes.

Megan McCain appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher this weekend. There was one comment made by her that really stood out and it was relating to the disapproval of us blaming Bush. She got straighten out about making that statement but I have something to add to the cluster f*** he left this country in. Megan you may as well get use to hearing about what George Bush did. What do you expect us to do? Blame the Obama Administration?

I am sure it would be convenient, after all this is what you people are accustomed to doing. Blaming the other party for your messes. Speak to your father; ask him to keep his mouth shut. Remind him about the song of bomb, Bomb, Iran to the tune of Barbara Ann the Republicans are so shameful to me.

Feisty is right! David Gregory has got to go or you all will lose the ratings you do have on Meet the Press, he is a terrible anchor.

I can’t think of any better Birthday present… then WHEN President Obama signs the health care bill this October!  Happy B-day to me…

Cause it's GOING to HAPPEN!
FR:  “The likelihood of severe unemployment extending into the 2010 midterm elections and beyond poses a significant political hurdle to President Obama and congressional Democrats, who are already under fire for what critics label profligate spending,”

And this from David Broder's column yesterday: "Obama regularly reminds the public...of all the problems he inherited from his predecessor.  But to reporters covering the White House, those reminders have become boilerplate. And...they rarely get much coverage."

Finally, the press corps stops cutting Obama slack on this point.  Sorry Mr President, YOU own this economy and YOU better fix by 2010.  No more whining allowed.

The rock band U2 said it best: with or without you.

If the political "establishment" and the health insurance companies think that this is all just going to go away because of their "scary" rhetoric and circular arguments, they are sadly mistaken.

I place this issue above almost all others . . . this is not a partisan issue . . . it is a health issue, an economic issue, and above all else a common sense issue.

Those members of Congress who sit on their cozy perches with their government run health plans and try to explain to us how they can't "afford" to do the same for us will be replaced. Period.

Riddle me this . . .

If a foreign country attacked us today, would we not retaliate because we can't afford it?

So why is it any different just because those attacking are for profit corporate health care rationing firms? The American people are under ATTACK - and we will not sit idly by and watch Congress surrender.

The Senate Democrats that were elected on the coat tail of President Obama had better contact the special interest groups and remind them "who" elected them into office.

If Health Crae Reform fails, we will reqiure their seats. I am not beging them for s****. We elected them and I refuse to beg for something that is our right to have. They are both in the pockets of drug companies and insurance companies. It's time to let them go. We elected you all...not them.

Why, instead of debating facts - you resort to name calling?

Resorting to name calling is a true sign that you know you dont have the facts to back up a weak position.  In debate class its called the "WEAK POSITION"

But, it appears that is what BoBo is doing also.  Going after Fox and any other person that does not agree with his far left ideas!

Maybe you could investigate why men dont like to use condoms and get paid hearly a half of a million dollars also.  BoBo is paying one of his "friends" to do this???  Why not you???
WHERE ARE THE JOBS, OBAMA????  I need a job now.  You said unemployment wouldn't go over 8%.
The Repudiated Republican Party of No is solely focused on hopefully putting President Obama in no-win situations thinking that doing so is a win-win for them when the reality is they self-creating their own lose-lose scenario for the next 16 years.
And still missing from all the I want I want is how to pay for it.  Medicare, which seems the nearest current program on which a public option will be based, already pays less than private insurance and is basically bust.  If you want higher taxes that is fine.  I've been saying that some sort of tax is required if this is going fly.  It was a lie that it would cost nothing, or we can tax those that earn over 250,000 for everything.  Now we are getting to some honesty.  Tell me how much and what I'll be getting for it.
>>  Dianne Feinstein, now say that Obama might not have the votes to pass health care? " <<

Some people, even some Democrats, see what a disaster the health care plan is for America. Overa trillion dollars, and that only covers a third of the uninsured? Even a liberal Democrat or two can get sticker shock of what is turning out to be nothing but a power play for Obama and black hole that sucks money out of American pockets.

Socialised medicine works poorly in small and less diverse coutnries like Canada, France, and England. It would be a total failure in a country as big as the United States.
I am sad to say that I quit watching MTP after giving Gregory a sufficient chance to improve.  He just isn't up to the job.  Need someone far more erudite in that position.  As to the MN. election.  The recount was triggered by MN state law, so I am not sure that Bai's comments are completely relevant.  Having said that, Coleman must know that he has lost this, and probably should have gracefully removed himself so that MN's could have the representation they are entitled to.  He has destroyed any reasonable possibility of being considered for any other elective office in MN.  He is the new poster boy for sore loser.
So Fiesty

Was your foot surgery elective?  Wonder how long you would wait for that surgery under a public health system?
President Obama is playing the situation in Iran correctly, staying above the fray and supporting the protesters carefully.  The idiot repugnant ones want to talk all belligerent as always and all that hot air does is make the situation worse.  I'm just glad we have President Obama in charge instead of McNasty and the Wasilla Hillbilly, those two idiots would shoot their arrogant ignorant mouths off and make matters far worse for the brave Liberal and Moderate protesters.

Sore Loser Coleman will find out his worthless losing appeal will cost him dearly in voter approval.  This creep has ruined his career being a dope of nope and refusing to recognize the reality he lost.  We still remember how he pressed Senator Al Franken to concede on the day after the election in order to start the healing process and then ignored his own advice when the recount clearly showed he lost.  Hopefully the Minnesota SC ruling will come down very soon and confirm that Senator Al Franken won the election.

I'm glad that Ted Kennedy made a good supportive ad for Chris Dodd.  Chris got the stuck with the blame for those bailout bonuses when he has made a career of protecting us real Americans from the predations of the rich and greedy, when the blame was really the fault of Clueless George and Munster Paulson.

In Obama We Trust!
Seat Senator Al Franken Now! Ha Ha!
Perhaps Obama should offer republicans a cap on non-economic medical malpractice awards [i.e., caps on pain and suffering awards], in exchange for support on the public health care option?
Ramp up the rhetoric?

Obama has said everything he can 400 times over. It's the same old song and dance and more and more Americans aren't buying it.

How can anyone in their right mind trust the mindset of the weak and getter weaker Barack Obama?
Poll: " . . . . and 52% say they prefer that their taxes not be increased, even if it means that NOT all Americans get health insurance. "

So take the 73% that want a public option and subtract the 52% that don't want to pay for it, and you get 21% that both want government run health care and are willing to pay for it.

Face it liberals. Health care reform for univiersal coverage is dead.
David Gregory has got to go or you all will lose the ratings you do have on Meet the Press, he is a terrible anchor.

Anita,

Don’t torture yourself… I made the mistake and tuned the weekend before last for the Joe Biden interview and Gotcha Gregory was as disgusting as EVER!

Seems Jeff Zucker doesn’t care that MTP’s rating are tanking faster than Titanic!  Now they’ve given Dr. Nancy Schneiderman her own show starting next week!  I mean COME ON I like Dr. Nancy but what qualifies her for a daily hour show!

David Gregory has GOT TO GO…
Replace him NOW with Lawrence O’….
Good news for Dems on health care? After a week of mostly bad news, advocates for a public/government option got some good news on Sunday, when the aforementioned CBS/NYT poll showed 72% backing a government-administered health insurance plan,

==============================================

It's all over the web how the lying liberals in New York stacked that useless poll.
There they go again, meaning the warmongers. I supposed they want us to liberate Iran from their dictator just as we did in Iraq. Oh, by the way the liberation in Iraq is still ongoing with no end in sight. If you must criticize the Prez, let it be on ligitimate issues. The critics of the Prez on Iran sounds like sour grape from the last election.
FR: And this from David Broder's column yesterday: "Obama regularly reminds the public...of all the problems he inherited from his predecessor.  But to reporters covering the White House, those reminders have become boilerplate. And...they rarely get much coverage."

The problems Obama inherited will pale compared to the ones the next President inherits from Obama.
*** You gotta know when to hold’em, know when to fold’em: Back in April, we wrote that Norm Coleman -- by taking his appeal to the Minnesota Supreme Court and delaying what seems to be the inevitable -- lost his chance to bow out gracefully.

What the hell did he care? The republicans paid 750,000 to assist with the delay. Yea, yea, yea, we know that the 2000 election stench is still hanging around...good...least we forget...perhaps the repubs will shut up about the "what a pity/shame BS they are talking and don't mean about Iran.
Since when have the Rethuglicans ever been right about much of anything, particularly Foreign Policy! They got it wrong on both wars, the countries that used to hate us, now despise us for our bullying ways, and now Lindsey Graham and John McCain are criticizing the President on his handling of the Iranian Crisis. These two jokers are laughable and should shut the heck up before they lose any more credibility.

Re:Heathcare Reform, the Dems need to grow a backbone and stick to their principles. They have tucked their tails between their legs for too long regarding healthcare and they need to man/woman up, that means you, too Ms. Feinstein!
Also, it's worth noting that the criticism from Republicans is NOT universal. In fact, the GOP establishment on this issue is more divided than the coverage is suggesting.

----------------------------------------------

Apparently the name Henry Kissinger still means something to some members of the GOP.  Kissinger has sided with President Obama's response to what is happening in Iran.

Take that, Chickenhawks!
There are things wrong with our health care sysytem but they will not compare to the government takeover that Obama has in mind. Barack, keep your hands out of my pocket. It's MY money, not yours. Thief.
In Connecticut, Ted Kennedy has cut a TV ad for vulnerable Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd, who’s up for re-election next year. “

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Apparently crap attacts flys.
Dear BoBo the Prez:

Please spare us the sactimonious "don't call names" post when you don't even cal the President of the United States by his name.

Stop wasting our time.
On youtube you can find a Countdown w/Keith Olbermann segment from last November entitled - "Final Campaign Comment Keith Olbermann". This was done I believe a few nights after the election was over.

It is beautifully done and reminds us all why we voted for President Obama. Who could ever forget the poignancy in Keith's voice when he announced the winner of the 2008 presidential election.

Try and take a moment to watch it.
On North Korea....

Obama needs to say more...like, we will shoot down any long range missle from North Korea that comes within 500 miles of the international water line of Hawaii.

Sorry, but I will not give Obama any ounce of support, and will actively campaign against him, if he allows a long range missle from North Korea to come within any distance of the great state of Hawaii!  If he allows such a missle to come within striking distance, or to fly over American Soil, and doesn't shoot it down, than he will have proven himself to be weaker than Carter!
Stop North Korea's ship and BOARD the damn thing. If there's trouble, there's trouble.

I wish Obama would learn to rise to the occasion instead of having the occasion manipulate him.
Congress people are well paid - by us and the lobbyists.

Repeal Congressional healthcare now.

We can't afford it anymore, right?
Feisty,

Cindy the Citizen is better alliteration,...

At any rate, one of the ways BCBS 'pays' hospitals is per capita.  I don't think the average citizen understands that many plans pool a per capita fee of their ppo enrollees and their hmo enrollees and then spread that to the participating providers.  So the providers are agreeing to reduced fees PLUS a per capita rate.  I agree though, to cover those who are seeking healthcare that are NOT covered, the fees to those who are covered are grossly 'exaggerated'.  I was speaking to a radiologist this weekend and he was telling me that he voted for Obama, not because he is liberal; but because he felt certain that continuing the Republican mindset on this topic was certain failure for his children's future.  AND he admitted that the uninsured often receive tests "to rule out" illnesses that the INSURED do not receive if their insurance says they won't pay.  THAT IS FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG.  We cannot sustain this existing model of healthcare.

I watched Bill Maher this weekend and Paul Begala was totally worth the price of admission.  I am a longtime fan and he didn't disappoint.  I think he was direct in his point to Meghan McCain.  I found her flippant, "...I'm just the blond at the table" hard to stomach since the other blond at the table was incredibly smart, studied and informed.  Her name is Katty Kay.

At any rate, Meghan has a valid contribution to make to the Republican party; but she really shouldn't attempt to wage a battle of wits with such an unprepared arsenal.

To all the regulars, we've got a lot of work to do locally to bring healthcare to the foreground.  Please pick up the phone and make some calls.  This is an important issue that MUST be resolved in this session of congress.  Good week to you!
'...Dem-controlled Congresses (during Carter and Clinton) have tended to handcuff Democratic presidents, and that may be happening now...'

Well it really depends on the Democratic President, doesn't it ?
LBJ pushed through MUCH TOUGHER legislation, Civil Rights, Medicare
LBJ was TOUGH, Carter was soft and Clinton was scattered (and pushing the corporate agenda)

Obama demonstrated softness during the campaign
It was ANNOYING and FRUSTRATING
What ever happened to Rahm Emmanuel ?
I thought HE was the steel in this Administration
The Administration has to get tough !!

Does Obama have that in him ?
He got tough with Hillary (finally)

My Senator, Feinstein is REALLY wavering on the public option.
Obama HAS TO BE TOUGH !
He seems diffident and stan offish
GET INVOLVED OBAMA !!

Feinstein was on TV this week end
She seemed VERY EVASIVE about what American is (and has been) doing in Iran
She makes me feel we HAVE BEEN INTERFERING in IRAN !!
So how far THAT goes !!

Especially under Bush, we seem to have been conducting a covert war against Iran
Wonder why they go their own way on nukes ??

You reap what you sow
The Democrats need to grow a pair and start dealing realistically with the huge popularity that the public health care option has with Mainstream America.  They need to act forcefully and together to cram good health care reform down the throats of the repugnant ones.  If the Democrats waffle on this issue then they had better expect the voters to waffle voting for them next election cycle.  Time for the Democrats to ignore the dopes of nope and just do it by passing the public option for health care to ensure their large leads in Congress.  Let the repugnant ones just say no and watch them disappear next election cycle.

Wow we're lucky to have Michelle Obama in our great state of California today, she'll be meeing with the wife of our deadbeat governor.  Too bad we didn't have Maria Schriver as our governor with her musclebound apeman as her first hubby.  Our state would be far better with her as governor.

Let's not forget that it was the bushwhacker and his repugnant one cronies who are responsible for gutting our economy and putting so many Americans out of work and on the dole.  I just laugh at the repugnant ones who are whining that us Democrats have to stop blaming everything that went wrong on Clueless George and his clueless band of psycophant supporters.  The repugnant ones have never stopped blaming all the ills of the bushwhacker on Bill Clinton so why should Democrats stop blaming the repugnant ones for screwing up our country?  The repougnant ones are still trying to backtime the 2001 recession to blame it on Clinton when it was started on 9/11 by a couple of cowards in the White House who grounded our airlines for over a week.

Blame the Repugnant Ones!
Nashville
If a foreign country attacked us today, would we not retaliate because we can't afford it?

Would this be a one-off expenditure or a continuing annual expense?  Are you comparing WW2 which was over in 3 - 4 years or a lifetime entitlement?  If we cover everybody for the next 3 years and then stiop would you be happy?
Bill, Fairfax, VA

Stop all government run health care for all government workers.

Stop all governement assistance to states after natural disasters.

Stop all subsidies to all corporations/business entities of any kind.

We can't afford it, right?
On Iran, Obama is more naieve than he is on health care.  This is not an Ivory Tower, academic discussion-it is reality.

Germany and France have each issued stronger statements than Obama's, as has that twit in Great Britain, P.M.Brown.  It has been speculated that Obama wants to keep his powder dry so that he does not run his chances of having diplomatic relations with the reining authorities-so much for his beliefs in a 'greater world'.

is anyone in this country really going to stand for his lending legitimacy to the powers that be in Iran?  No One is advocating going to war with them, as the libs on this site continually raise as the epitome of the straw man argument.  The statement relaesed by both houses of congress hit the right note on Friday-but the wordsmith in chief chokes on strong words that do not have ambivalent meaning.

Many of the liberal bloggers on this site also raise the issue of overthrowing the government in Iran in the early 1950's, neatly forgetting that the last time we 'interferred' in that country's leadership was in the late 1970's.  That would be when Jimmy Carter, in his infinite wisdome, undermined the Shah, and made it possible, through strong arm tactics, for the Ayatollah Khomeini to return to Tehren.  Carter though him a 'holy man, almost a saint'.  We see what that saint wrought.

Obama is as dangerously naive as Carter.  On North Korea, on Iran, on the Palestinians-he is proof that those who voted for him should have heeded the old adage-"those who can, do.  those who can't, teach".
It seems the GOP has learned nothing from their 8 years, their answers to everything from diplocmacy to the  economy is more of the same failed policies of the Cheney/Bush  years.  It is bad enough not to learm from  your mistakes , but to propose them as answers to current problems. It also seems the main stream media has learned nothing as well,  with their timid unquestioning of the GOP leaders.   We should be thankful that John McCain and Scary Palin are not around . Every utterance they make proves how disastrous they would be. Perhasps they should be sent to the same primary school where Condi was finally asked the questions the MSM should have
Looks like the lobbyist money from the insurance and pharmaceutical companies is beginning to work it's evil magic in our greed riddled congress, a healthcare reform plan without a public option is no reform at all, we all know it, the congress knows we know it, we will see if they give the American citizen the finger again.
Socialised medicine works poorly in small and less diverse coutnries like Canada, France, and England. It would be a total failure in a country as big as the United States.
T Scailes, San Diego

Be gone with your BS. We know that your talking points have failed across America. Socialized medicine my ass. What is Medicare???? New material please.
I believe President Obama is taking exactly the right course with Iran. He is not getting involved in the election, but he is speaking up against their violence toward peaceful protesters. The Iranian protesters are using tactics that worked for Ghandi and Martin Luther King. Change didn't happen overnight in either case, but change DID happen.

As for Chuck Grassley saying, "If America stands for democracy and all of these demonstrations are going on in Tehran and other cities over there, and people don't think that we really care, then obviously they're going to question, do we really believe in our principles?"

Mr Grassley might want to review our great nation's history before he goes making statements like that. We were NOT supporting democracy when we helped overthrow the elected government in Iran and put the Shah back in power. We were NOT supporting democracy in South Vietnam when we backed a brutal regimes of Diem, Mihn, and Thieu. We were NOT backing democracy when we supported the oppressive dictators in Central and South America. Even as recently as 2007 we supported Nazarbayev, a dictator in Kazakhstan that put himself in power for life.

The Iranian government and the rest of the world are not so naive to think that the US stands for democracy. We are only for democracy when it benefits us!

So we are right to stay out of it and let it run its course.

And for those drawing parallels to WWII and talking about Chamberlin, Churchill, and FDR, this situation is not even remotely similar to Hitler and WWII! The Republican of Iran has not invaded anyone and is not looking to take over the world.
Ramping up the rhetoric? The rhertoric doesn't pay the bill. Hard working American taxpayers have had enough. They are already overtaxed trying to service an ever expanding federal government. Percentages are given that say health care costs exceed inflation. What about the federal government costs though? Those costs exceed the rate of increase of health care!

Americans will just say no to the bloated federal government becoming more obese with the attempted take over of nearly 20% of the economy, the health care system, by the government.
Was your foot surgery elective?  Wonder how long you would wait for that surgery under a public health system?

So Alan…

What does whether my surgery was elective or not have to do with COSTS??? Because that was my question…

Want to try again to address the cost issue?
The Republicans need to really take a step back and think about getting into the Iranian's business. Look, if they think the U.S. are "meddling" it's gonna be even harder in the future to work with them to get problems solved. I am sure this is why the Obama administration has taken the necessary steps to not approach the situation so aggresively. Calm down repubs, you may get your turn to reak havok, with other countries, in the future.

As for Ensign: So, he knew about the mistresses husband about to "tattle on him" to a certain "news" outlet and this is why he went ahead and made his public statment? If that had not been the case he would not have said anything at all about the affiar? Boy I tell you, hypocricy is a b*#@%!
