State Dept. on Iran, HRC's elbow

From NBC's Libby Leist

Filling in for injured Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at a press conference with Georgia's foreign minister, Deputy Secretary of State Jim Steinberg reiterated today that the Obama administration believes "all voices should be heard" in Iran and "people should be allowed to express their opinions" about the election outcome. Steinberg dismissed Republican criticism that the administration is pulling its punches in its support for Iran's protestors.

He said this is not a partisan issue, and there are people on both sides of the aisle that agree with President Obama about ensuring this election is about Iran and not the United States.

Video: The New York Times’ David Sanger discusses whether President Barack Obama’s plan to negotiate directly with Iran’s government could be in real jeopardy due to the protests in Tehran.

Also today, Steinberg confirmed that Secretary Clinton will not travel to Trieste, Italy later this week for a meeting with G8 foreign ministers, to be focused on Afghanistan and Pakistan. Instead, the No. 3 official in the State Department, William Burns, will attend in Clinton's place, along with special envoys Richard Holbrooke and George Mitchell.

This G8 meeting at one time was thought to be a chance for Secretary Clinton to encounter Iranian government officials. Italy had invited Iran to participate in the Afghanistan talks. But now, with political unrest in Iran and Clinton's injury, a U.S.-Iran encounter appears unlikely.

Clinton has also canceled a weekend visit to Corfu, Greece. Steinberg will represent her in talks there, he said.

So, how is the patient? "The Secretary is doing better. She successfully came through her surgery. She was able to come by and visit with us in the Department this morning. She was very warmly welcomed in all her meetings, but she does have a road to travel in terms of her recovery and rehabilitation," Steinberg said.

Get well soon Secretary Clinton. You are needed back on the job.
Is anything wrong with her besides the broken elbow? Just seems like a broken arm wouldn't interfere too much with her going to the meeting in Italy.
Probably a good thing that Hillary is leaving the G8 discussions to people with actual foreign policy experience. Not to say that Burns, Holbrooke and Mitchell are much better, but they do have actual experience and know what their talking about.
Rebublicans have no respest of anyones rights. Glad to know that Hillary is better.
Get better soon Hillary.  I do think Holbrooke and Mitchell will do just fine.
It's so funny watching these Republican Politicians pretend they care about the Iranian citizens in the street fighting for the right to let their votes be heard, when we all know what this is really about and that's damage control of who they have finally been exposed to be, the world identify them as not with the people in the street fighting for freedom, the republicans are identified with the fraudulently elected President Ahmadinejad and the Conservative Regime that controls Iran.

We know this, Americans have had to deal with an Ahmadineja and a Conservative Regime for 8 years and in fact, we still have a few in congress who I previously stated are now trying to camouflage themselves as people who are for free elections and who are for fair elections; but people don’t be fooled by this, the Republican Party is more in-line with the current regime in Iran than anything happening in their streets; and it is in the Republicans Party and the Conservative Iranians best interest to keep each other in power, because without the other, they can in no way survive as we are bearing witness to this right now.
We can't be demanding things of other country's internal elections other than that they be free and fair.  We can express our opinion that all people should be able to peaceful express themselves.  The growing violent crack down that the government of Iran is doing will only hurt them in the end.

My gosh the Obama administration is tone deaf. News for Barack: The protests are not about the election results. They are about the anger that has built up from decades of the government telling the people of that country what they can and cannot do. Until you figure that out, anything you or your rookie state department (Hillary and company are anything but diplomats) are not going to make any progress.
Oh, and jeff, westomon IL-'the ivory twer' is a term used to describe the rarafied world of intellectuals who spend their time discussing, and 'solving', the great issues-cmpletely disconnected from the practical consequences of their pie in the sky solutions.

read a book.

The same would be true of hacks that post rassmusen results on a blog board thinking it would have an impact.  People who go out and solve problems get involved and run for office, not shout from an anonymous forum.

Just think of how these GOP Dittoheads would of reacted if Iran would've try to comment about the U.S. after the 2000 election.  Even if there wasn't violence on the same level as Iran, the GOP d-bags would've went nutz
See what happens when you rub elbows with dictators!!!

Sorry, Just couldn't resist.

Actually, Hillary - I wish you the best and good luck!

Your going to need it - having to follow the direction of BoBo the Clown -

Hillary - I wish you were leading and he (BoBo) was organizing some rigged election somewere still!
Hillary's elbow is fine and my knee is fine.

Aren't we good? Now let's play tennis.
Get better soon Hillary.  I do think Holbrooke and Mitchell will do just fine.

I imagine you base this on hope rather then on any accomplishments these two have ever had.
get well soon, Hillary1

Kinda like OUR last election, maybe?
No one has yet reported that the Iranians have asked the US or any international government or body to step in, so it is only right that no one do so.   On the other hand, there are African nations that have asked for international help (Somalia, for example) and no one responds to that.  Why?  If the Iranian opposition did ask the world to intervene, whom would they ask, and what kind of help could anyone provide?
"Is anything wrong with her besides the broken elbow? Just seems like a broken arm wouldn't interfere too much with her going to the meeting in Italy"

It's probably not the broken elbow that is slowing her down, but the surgery to repair the elbow.
It sounds to me like Mrs. Clinton saw an opportunity to beg off meeting with the bloodthirsty dictators in Iran and ran with it.  Good for her.

Jimmy Carter brought back the 'holy man, almost a saint' Ayatollah Khomeini from France, and the results were devestating for the U.S. and the Iranian people.  He acted out of a sincere, naive belief that all religous people were inherently good.

Obama means to stay out of Iran right now, despite the leadership being shown by European leaders, because he is ego driven to bring about a 'new understanding' with the Ayatollah Khameini-and Ahmedinjad.  He sees himself as the one human being on earth that can bring people together, united in their overwhelming awe of-Barack Obama.  He thinks he is the idol of the world's fan club-and he's wrong, and dangerous to the health of the western world.

The Obama worshippers on this site and in the press don't get out much.  they did not notice the European elections, held just after Obama spoke in Germany and France, which swept out the leftists and elected right wing politicans in their place.  They notice not at all the contempt in which Germany's Merkel and France's Sarkozy hold Obama.  And they are blind to the view of the people of Europe, who agree with Sarkozy that Obama is 'dangerously naive'.

So, Americans see him as disastrous on domestic policy; the rest of the world sees him as ineffectual on world matters, and those who worship him continue to give him credit for the sun rising in the east.

You people live in an alternate universe.

Great Point!
It's so funny watching these Republican Politicians pretend they care about the Iranian citizens

go joe go bo, Main Street U.S.A

Another Lib without a clue. Republicans and good Americans care about their country first and foremost. Iran is soon to be a nuclear power. With the current leadership in Iran, Iran would be a a serious threat and problem to the US. A new regime would be a game changer for that relationship. A new leadership in Iran may be more interested in joining the world community and behave is a positive fashion towards the US and the West. If that new leadership is also better for the people of Iran, terrific.

You libs have got to remember what's important in global affairs. Because from these writings of yours, you don't have a clue.

I don't think there would have been any great uprising from the Left if McCain won. Mostly because they were too stoned.
Anita, Birmingham, Alabama

another racist klansperson fromt he south.

she refers to any person of color that dares disagree with her as "house boy" the only way a minority deserves the respect of not being assaulted with racist slurs is if they agree with her.

Anita, your hood is ready.

welcome to changeville
A broken elbow holds Hillary back?  She probably broke it fighting her way to the front of the line.  It's not the sort of thing that would keep her from important business.  If it were an important meeting with the Chinese, Hillary would go with a cast on her arm.  So who is she snubbing?  Italy's favorite sexual compulsive perhaps?  Berlusconi makes Bill look like prince charming.

Maybe the G8 just doesn't have a lot of relevance right now.  Too many divisions?  Too many agendas?  Maybe more important events elsewhere deserving her attention?
Wow! Even conservative commentator Pat Buchanan stated that Obama is handling this one perfectly. His comment that the GOP's thirst for more criticism (both for Obama and Iran) is typical of the brain-drain that has happened to the GOP..As is, this is Iranian's time, their rebellion.  If we elevate the confrontation, it becomes the US, not the Iranians who are propagating this "revolution"...how can the GOP continue to be so stupid?
Updated Information  -- Thanks to President Obama. The National Iranian American Council republishes a letter from an "ordinary Tehrani."

Dear friend, if you have any contacts within the American Administration, please send them this message on behalf of us, ordinary Iranians in Iran (whose interests and concerns are very different from those of the exiled Iranians in the United States and in Europe who do not yet understand the mentality here and who have been cut off from the Iranian society for too long). Tell your contacts in the Administration that their point of view regarding Iran is by far the best position that an American Government has ever taken. We appreciate this and thank the President.

During the last two or three decades not one American president had "understood" Iran. All of them got caught in the traps of the mollahs, despite themselves having to play the bad cop .. but this time the intelligent president has decided not to join in their game, bravo.

It is normal that he is criticized vividly by most of the Los Angeles Iranians (and by most Republicans): since a long time they have been asking for just one thing : that America attack Iran and change the regime so that they get their possessions and their former jobs and privileges back, without wanting to know what today's young Iranian wants here and now. It makes me think of the Cubans in Florida ... they don't consider the interests of their country but only what is due to them.
Someone disagreeing with Obama is not a racist, like Anita from Alabama, unless they choose to couch their criticism in racist terms.  No matter who or what a person is they are given more dignity by GOD than to be minimized by racist slurs.  Mike Tyson is a convicted rapist, though I think he was innocent, regardless any criticism of him, based on his race is unacceptable, and insult to ALL members of ALL races.  I often disagree with Obama, for instance, he needs to stand up to insurance and deliver a REAL SINGLE PAYER HEALTH SOLUTION.  Notice I felt no need to resort to slurs upon his ethnicity?  Perhaps it is becasue MY criticism is valid and substantive, unlike racist anita's.  When you find yourself ABLE to descend to criticizing ANYONE, even Justice Thomas, on their race as racists like anita do, it simply exposes the underlying racism in their soul.  By the way, he like all the justices, are NOT there to "represent" any community, they are ALL there to represent the constitution, as it is written, not as they imagine it should be.  And as far as a symbol of rising above roots, Justice Thomas is head & shoulders above the story of ANY liberal RACIST like anita the Alabama klansperson.

welcome to post-racial changeville

anita's hood is ready.  and all you other liberals who decide that if you disagree with an african-american then it is A-OK to slur their race.  There are MANY of you on here.  YOUR hoods are all ready too.  The hood-maker maybe the only company hiring in this economy!
Speedy recovery, Secretary Clinton.  Anyone who has surgery knows you do not feel great for awhile.  For one thing, your body suffers shock plus the anethesia leaves you pretty drained.  You have staff for emergency situations like this and both men are well qualified to handle the G8.  To the doubters, yes, she does have a road to travel with her arm.  I know from experience.

Typical GOP response to Iran (insert any country)--let's do something, maybe send troops.  Still waiting for one of those armchair quarterbacks to tell us their plan for Iran, maybe say something smart or maybe just shut up.
Sometimes a poster helps to show us what time it really is. Thanks justwaitandsee!

Yesterday on Zakaria's GPS Z. Bresinsky gave a very good analysis of the current situation in Iran. He labeled the Supreme leader and President M.A. as "neocons". Now read this repost and take note!

"...the Republican Party is more in-line with the current regime in Iran than anything happening in their streets; and it is in the Republicans Party and the Conservative Iranians best interest to keep each other in power, because without the other, they can in no way survive as we are bearing witness to this right now."

Very enlightening! So Bomber John and Ahmadinejad are birds of a feather. One wants to bomb Iran, the other Israel. Strange bedfellows, eh?

John Maccain talking about identifying with the iranians on the street is like the cat saying that it will solidarise with the mouse. Is it not this same Maccain who was calling for the Iranians to be bombed. Remember the infamouse bomb, bomb, bomb, Iran song that he was singing during one of his campaign stops. And now he is talking as if he LOVES the Iranians, when in his heart of hearts he knows he does not give a rip about them.  Hypocrisy, where art thou?
Take care  of yourself Hillary. You'll be missed in these meetings. I'm sure the peoples of Italy and Greece will be very disappointed you won't be there. As for Mitchell and Holbrooke doing fine, I'm sure they'll do okay, afterall, it was Hillary's idea to have these two envoys appointed. It was never BO's idea, contrary to what some who haven't done their research think, however, they certainly don't have Hillary's star power.  Hillary is the toughest politician I know, and the hardest working politician I've ever seen, so hopefully, she'll take proper care of herself with this injury, and come back better than ever!  You're doing fabulous as SOS Madame Secretary!!
