South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford hasn't been seen since Thursday. His staff says he's just taking some time to clear his mind and gather thoughts since the stimulus fight and that he was been known to travel without his security.

But when he left, he didn't even tell his wife where he was headed and authorities went so far as to track his cell phone.

Video: After being out of contact for four days, aides now say South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford was just out hiking on the Appalachian Trail. NBC’s Mike Viqueira reports.

"Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session, and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside,"  Sanford's spokesman Joel Sawyer said in a statement. "We are not going to discuss the specifics of his travel arrangements or his security arrangements."

South Carolina newspaper The State: "The whereabouts of Gov. Mark Sanford was unknown for nearly four days, and some state leaders question who was in charge of the executive office. But Sanford’s office told the lieutenant governor’s office Monday afternoon that Sanford has been reached and he is fine, said Frank Adams, head of Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer’s office on aging. Neither the governor’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division, which provides security for governors, had been able to reach Sanford after he left the mansion Thursday in a black SLED Suburban SUV, said Sen. Jake Knotts and three others familiar with the situation but declined to be identified. Sanford’s last known whereabouts had been near Atlanta because a mobile telephone tower picked up a signal from his phone, authorities said. His office now knows where he is, Adams said. First lady Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press earlier Monday her husband has been gone for several days and she did not know where. She said she was not concerned."

AP: "First lady Jenny Sanford tells The Associated Press her husband said he needed time away from their children to write something. She says she's not concerned."

*** UPDATE *** Sanford found. Well, on Twitter anyway... Wherever he is, he's Twittering -- and reading the local papers:

*** UPDATE II *** In an email to NBC News, spokesman to Gov. Mark Sanford, Joel Sawyer, elaborates a bit on the where-is-Mark-Sanford story. He says Sanford is winding down and clearing his head.

"The governor put in a lot of time during this last legislative session, and after the session winds down it's not uncommon for him to go out of pocket for a few days at a time to clear his head. Obviously, that's going to be somewhat out of the question this time given the attention this particular absence has gotten. Before leaving last week, he let staff know his whereabouts and that he'd be difficult to reach. Should any emergencies arise between the times in which he checks in, our staff would obviously be in contact with other state officials as the situation warrants before making any decisions."

Gov. Sanford is a shining symbol of complete responsibility with taxpayer dollars, no?

He left on Father's Day Weekend, is it me or does that sound very strange.
I wonder if any female 'aids' are MIA, too?  I smell a scandal.  It doesn't even have to be true,...
Sounds fishy!!!!!! Anyone want to bet he might have a mistress?
He's visiting his other wife and family.
Senator Jake Knotts, a long time Sanford critic, stirred this tempest in a teapot for his own purposes.  the governor was seen on television by satellite on Thursday evening, by the way,(if you read the full story on politico, you get more details).

The only thing surprising about this is that Knotts is a republican, and can still be taken seriously by the media-althoug, since it IS Sanford, they'd believe the nut who said he was an illegal alien-from mars.
Maybe Obama can do something like this. A curse on anyone that attempts to find him.
Well, all the haters of Sanford will have posted by now. It must be really difficult for you folks to live in a diverse society where different ideas can be presented and discussed. You're more the "My way or the highway" types, and you get frustrated and threatened when someone doesn't play by your rules.
Sanford is probably leading a team of ninjas to overthrow the Iranian leadership. It looks like he's been fairly effective.
OHHHH Boyyyy:
I Hope he is not having an affair.
The way things are going, every other day one or the other of these men getting cought in and out of the sack with one woman or the other. I hope he is clearing his head alone.
"First lady Jenny Sanford tells The Associated Press her husband said he needed time away from their children to write something. She says she's not concerned." - Am I the only one that finds this fishy?
Yeah, what we do without our political leadership being in constant contact with us? Live our lives without them I guess. Doesn't seem to be a problem with Barack "Hollywood" Obama though.
maybe taxes are lower in atlanta. hopefully he won't come back.

I am sure this is more than likely not real story.  But will say if my husband was gone for a couple of days and I did not know where he was it be a big deal at home!! Plus time away from his children sounds really odd-I would think he has an office....
== HAVE YOU SEE THIS MAN? SC GOV, MIA ==

I think he came in 4th at the US Open. Not the best guy with a driver, but the man can putt.
There are a few flaky Democrats here and there, but it seems that the Republican party has nothing but flakes, from Sarah Palin to Newt Gingrich. Now it's obvious that Sanford is a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
Hard for me to believe that his spouse was not concerned after being gone for several days and she had no idea of his whereabouts!
Maybe he's partying with Vitter? Or Ensign? Or Mark Foley? Or Larry Craig? Or maybe he's on one of those viagra junkets to the DR with Rush? But let's hope he went hunting with Deferrment Dick, shall we.
OK, right wing, you're always criticizing Pres Obama for taking days off, for his date nights with First Lady, and even for his lunch trips but at least we know where he is!!  Seriously, everybody deserves down time at undisclosed locations.  Maybe he's with Cheney.
Finally SC ranks at the top of something - #1 in missing governors. This is truly a great benefit that the Stimulus has brought us.
Anita,

I never said I liked the guy.  I simply said he follows the constitution to the letter, and that I am glad he is on the court.  I am fully aware of his past transgressions, and its not as if I approve them or anything.  Now while you may not agree with his method the fact that he is a strict constitutionalist is a good thing.  There are nine justices and each of them has a different way of viewing their job.  As a result the court is kind of a balancing act these days when it should be impartial to everything but its fidelity to the constitution.  So you'll have to forgive me for appreciating his strict constitutional stances when everyone else has a kind of politicized way of deciding.

And no he doesn't represent my community or my race or my demographic, and he shouldn't that what a representative is for (they give you clues in their names as to what their function is) a Justice is supposed to be impartial.
maybe he is at bohemian grove?!

Some people don't celebrate Hallmark manufactured holidays, like MLK day for example.

Houston

Please. the Dims have Barney. Barney wins the flake contest all by himself.
We can only hope he stays away.  It can only help the state.  Its shocking that someone who is suucchh a crusader for the family would be away from his family on Fathers Day.  He must really have worn itself out trying to ruin our state.  It is amazing that a person who puts his own political ambitions ahead of the welfare of his state is still somewhat possible.  As governor he is chsrged for acting in the best interest of his state, shame he can't be impeached, maybe his off with Spitzers Pal.
Nervous Breakdown?
Often times fathers take off on their families during fathers day weekend...ok...seems shady. Maybe he was at an Indian casino trying to get back the difference on the stimulus package??
This is the best thing he's done during his tenure. Hopefully he'll need until 2010 to "clear his head".

Seriously? Sanford needs time away to recharge after a political fight over the stimulus package?  In addition to needing time away from his children?  What a drama queen, and a wuss.
Check Scarborough's house.
I think he's with Susan Boyle in the hospital for a "few days of rest."
i got a hundred bucks that say he's with his gay lover!!....not that there's anything wrong with that!
Oh man - it was FATHER'S DAY on Sunday. If he really just took off like they said - what kind of father is that?? I would be a lot concerned if it was me.

And even though I am a democrat - I hope everything is all right with Sanford and that this will end up being a none story.
This guy is the the leader of a State and he goes missing and the right blames it on the stimulus. Looks like the wheels are coming off.
As with any employee, Mark Sanford's pay should be docked for unexcused absences. If his excuse proves unacceptable, he should be terminated.

Politicians should be reminded that THEY WORK FOR US.
Who cares? Only his enemies and rumor mongers.
He must be out there searching for all those jobs that Obama promised!!
"First lady Jenny Sanford tells The Associated Press her husband said he needed time away from their children to write something. She says she's not concerned."
---------
That's that oddest quote I've heard in some time, especially since the statements from him office say nothing of children but rather the extensive time he allegedly put into the past legislative session.

Sweet Lord, what an endearing sentiment to lay at the feet of your children.  'I can't stand your @asses...I'm outta here!  You can't find me...go find your mother...I need to go write something and you b@astards are so loud and annoying, I can't get anything done!"

(real activity) Mark and his political team are brainstorming on different campaign slogans for a run in 2012 to really hit home the 'values' message!

If he were the leader of the free world, would he plan to wander off for a few days at a time?  This is not normal behavior.  First he is said to be "clearing his head."  Then he's writing a book.  If his head is stuffy, he should take a benadryl. If he wants to write a book, he can sit down anywhere with a computer and type away.  No need to disappear either way.
Oh no! He didn't go for a ride with Teddy kennedy on Martha's Vineyard, did he?
Nice diversionary article covering up for His Royal Heiness' unemployment rate stated to be 10% but in actuality greater than 16%...  You s.o.b.'s at FR must work at a circus shell game for your day job.
Gee, sounds like the governor of SC cannot "take the heat" after working hard and losing his case against the stimulous (education) package, that he needs to get away to get his thoughts together and chill out!!  Not telling his wife of his whereabouts sounds awfully strange.  He has to get away from the kids during fathers' day weekend?  Yep, he sounds like a truly responsible dad and govenor!  Perhaps it is RECALL TIME!!  It is obvious this guy is not up to the job and obviously not up to being a dad!!
Another "Gross Odd Person" (GOP) doing something either illegal or immoral. Again!! This party of no smells so bad. That even the swamp frogs of South Carolina are even barfing. Remember America. When you go to vote next time. Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! The party of no has got to go!!

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.  Or as Barney Frank would say, "What happens in San Francisco stays in San Francisco".
Wife, LT. Gov doesn't know where's he's been for over 4 days.  Didn't spend Father's Day with his kids.  Yep, he's shining example of Rethug family values.  And wow - great idea taking off after putting in so much time obstructing financial aid for your state!

Well done!
Well, if he was just "clearing his head" (which we all DO have a right to do every now and again) he should have no problem telling people where he was and what he was doing.  A weekend trip to a golf resort, or fishing trip, or a retreat is nothing to hide.

That only reason to be evasive would be because he was doing something that only a Republican would find tasteful.  Anyone know where Senator Vitter was during the weekend?!?
Has the world gone crazy?

I don't like this guy's politics but what's wrong with a person just getting way from all the second guessing as a way to just take it easy, knock down a few and clear his or her  head?
Lets put his picture on a Milk Carton and offer some kind of reward. I think the aliens have gotten him because he was due for another anal probing. They will drop him back off at the Gov. Mansion as soon as they get the I.Q. test results back.
