South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford hasn't been seen since Thursday. His staff says he's just taking some time to clear his mind and gather thoughts since the stimulus fight and that he was been known to travel without his security.

But when he left, he didn't even tell his wife where he was headed and authorities went so far as to track his cell phone.

Video: After being out of contact for four days, aides now say South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford was just out hiking on the Appalachian Trail. NBC’s Mike Viqueira reports.

"Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session, and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside,"  Sanford's spokesman Joel Sawyer said in a statement. "We are not going to discuss the specifics of his travel arrangements or his security arrangements."

South Carolina newspaper The State: "The whereabouts of Gov. Mark Sanford was unknown for nearly four days, and some state leaders question who was in charge of the executive office. But Sanford’s office told the lieutenant governor’s office Monday afternoon that Sanford has been reached and he is fine, said Frank Adams, head of Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer’s office on aging. Neither the governor’s office nor the State Law Enforcement Division, which provides security for governors, had been able to reach Sanford after he left the mansion Thursday in a black SLED Suburban SUV, said Sen. Jake Knotts and three others familiar with the situation but declined to be identified. Sanford’s last known whereabouts had been near Atlanta because a mobile telephone tower picked up a signal from his phone, authorities said. His office now knows where he is, Adams said. First lady Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press earlier Monday her husband has been gone for several days and she did not know where. She said she was not concerned."

AP: "First lady Jenny Sanford tells The Associated Press her husband said he needed time away from their children to write something. She says she's not concerned."

*** UPDATE *** Sanford found. Well, on Twitter anyway... Wherever he is, he's Twittering -- and reading the local papers:

*** UPDATE II *** In an email to NBC News, spokesman to Gov. Mark Sanford, Joel Sawyer, elaborates a bit on the where-is-Mark-Sanford story. He says Sanford is winding down and clearing his head.

"The governor put in a lot of time during this last legislative session, and after the session winds down it's not uncommon for him to go out of pocket for a few days at a time to clear his head. Obviously, that's going to be somewhat out of the question this time given the attention this particular absence has gotten. Before leaving last week, he let staff know his whereabouts and that he'd be difficult to reach. Should any emergencies arise between the times in which he checks in, our staff would obviously be in contact with other state officials as the situation warrants before making any decisions."

Sanford, don't bother coming back PLEASE...even the Republicans in the state legislature can't abide this horses backside called "Governor". The man is a self promoting, self agrandizing pompous ass. And those are his GOOD qualities.
Her husband is gone, She has no idea, needed time away from the kids,he needs to write something? Things have been neglected...  Sounds like the wife has been neglected and he got caught cheating... she is not worried because she knows he better write up a good divorce decree granting her everything she wants or she is going to shout from the mountain tops and end his career... my hubby could never, pull that stunt...
Here is some crazy speculation for you all! His wife is just saying that she doesn't know where he is because saying "He wanted to get away from it all by going to our cabin," defeats the purpose of getting away from it.

You're right, that is crazy talk. He MUST be banging his interns.
it sounds like he cracked and his twets sound like he want to overthrow his state goverment
I don't believe the Governor's office's story. The man just should not leave the state, or his office without letting his family and his office know he will be gone. They did not know where he was. They may now, but the real question is what if there is a real situation that needs his attention. Is this the way to behave as Gov.? We know the answer. Anyway, stress is a part of the job. No big deal there, but you do not run away. What about being away from the kids? On Father's Day? I do not buy it.
Fathers Day no show from a leader of the party of family values? Does any republican actually do what they say anymore?
Seems odd leaving around Father's Day - this, together with some of his other views/statements makes you wonder if he's competent to consider running for president.
Wherever he goes i hope he stays there
Sounds like he is about to come out of the closet and announce that he has a male lover.
If he can not handle the pressure as Governor, what would he do as President.
I lived in the lovely state of SC for many a year.  This is the state the everyone knew about Strom Thurmond's illigitimate black child but no one would talk about it (until it was made public after his death).  Nothing amazes me any more out of SC.
As a resident, tax-payer, and registered voter of South Carolina, I find Sanford's behavior to be strange, childish, and reckless on behalf of the state of SC.  Is he suffering from depression?  Or is he licking his wounds?  Why must he leave his family?  Is he a sociopath?  I have one thing to say, you'd never see ED RENDELL leave PENNSYLVANIA to weep!
I hope he's at least with a WOMAN...  It might break the GOP spell of 'male fondness'...
Some ET took him away in a UFO. That is appropriate because he doesn't seem to live on this planet as he is so out of touch with reality he might as well be on a UFO.
It just occurred to me that he is in Alaska strategerizing with Palin.  It's SO obvious!
May be in treatment?

Sounds very fishy to me.. He has to get away from the kids to write something.  What the heck does that  mesn.
This will be used against him in his next run for office.... any office
Maybe he had to check into a hospital or respite for a rest.
All this hate sickens me. We are ALL Americans and we ALL need to remember that. By the way, where he is and what he's doing is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. This is a free country, remember?
Everyone deserves a vacation. Hell, George W. Bush took the entire month of August off in 2001. But to sneak off in a government car, be tracked down to Atlanta, not tell your staff or  your wife (and to not calll the family on Father's Day) there is  indeed some wacy stuff going on with Sanford.

Even if you take the cover story at face value, Joel Sawyer just told everyone that the goovernor of South Carolina had to get away for a few days (checkin in "infrequently") because he was a sore loser.
Check out his twitter page. He's linking to two editorials he just wrote. His wife's statement checks out in that regard.
I smell a minority mistress about to go public. These Southern Republicans always secretly deal with people they publicly profess to dislike (using code words of course). Like Thomas Jefferson.
"MIA?" Missing, yes – action, not so much.
Maybe he won't come back! Maybe a few more governors will join him! Secede!
yeah...i like the cheney thing!.lets hope he went hunting with cheney.
Wow, talk about making a big deal out of nothing.
It's a tough call: a man in a high-profile leadership position like that STILL needs a little private time to clear his head. Yes, he should have at least cleared it with his security detail (unless, of course, he already distrusted them to NOT be respectful of his privacy!) and YES, he should have made arrangements with is Lt. Governor for "just in case" and YES, he should've communicated his wishes with his family.

A simple apology should suffice! I'd forgive him with understanding.
What happened to a government that just wants to do right by the citizens it is supposed to be representing?

Too many people seem to be stuck on democrat vs republican. Politics is not about picking a team and rooting for them to win, it's about supporting those politicians whose platforms you agree with.

Root for your values/issues to win, to result in a better future for you and your loved ones.
Not surprising that he needed to ditch his children on Fathers Day.  He ditched thousands of South Carolinians out of work and on hard times as a result of the recession by refusing to take the stimulus dollars to help them.  He literally needed the courts to show him that people are hungry and losing their homes and dying NOW. Maybe I'm nuts, but I think it is more important to save lives NOW -at whatever the cost - then work diligently to bring down the cost over the next many months.  What good will it do future generations by not acting NOW?  Heck, they could all starve to death by the time Sanford and the NOPHERS react. The republic party is permeated with hate and it is catching up to them.
Even governors are human.. the need to de-stress. If his wife says she is not concerned, maybe it is because she knows where he is, just isn't saying? OMG!!! Is that common sense I hear?
For all you who care and think this is an issue... get a life.
Am having 1000 bumper stickers printed: 'MARK SANFORD MISSING?? (...who cares!)
Do we the taxpayers have to pay his sorry a$$ for those days he just did'nt come to work?
