The BMW vs. the Buick

From NBC's Mark Murray
In the last few days, Republican aides have pounced on the results from three new national polls (NBC/WSJ, CBS/NYT, ABC/WashPo). President Obama's approval rating is down, they cheer. The public is worried about the deficit and the administration's spending, they add. It disapproves of the decision to shut down Guantanamo Bay. And it's not as optimistic about the stimulus.

All observations are true. But buried inside all three polls is this finding: Opinions about the Republican Party are at an all-time low. What's more, according to the ABC/WashPo survey, Americans trust Obama more than congressional Republicans on health care (55%-27%), the economy (55%-31%), the deficit (56%-30%), and combating terrorism (55%-34%).

To put it simply, the GOP's take on Obama's poll numbers is a lot like the owner of a 1987 Buick

pointing out the dents and potential engine trouble of a 2008 BMW sedan.

No doubt that Obama remains the dominant focus in American politics. No doubt that the president's numbers are down. And no doubt that Obama has entered a more challenging phase of his presidency (as he tackles health care, energy, and the stagnant economy).

Video: With the Republican Party still finding its footing in the current political landscape, is it now the time for a third party to triumph? A political panel debates.

But now more than five months since George W. Bush left office, the Republican Party finds itself confronting a more immediate problem with the American public than Obama or the Democratic Party currently faces.

Of course, the political climate can change in the blink of an eye (think of Bush before and after Hurricane Katrina), and Republicans are hoping that Obama's BMW breaks down.

But smart Republicans are asking themselves this question: Does their 80s-era Buick need a fixing first?

Obama's approval coming down to earth is a penthouse level compared to what the GOP is suffering from
Talk about ‘Cash for Clunkers’ I can think of a few the GEENOPEE should trade in… top 3 being:

Boner the Tan Man

Eric Cant nor won’t even try

McBomber

And the list goes on and on…

Nice analogy there Mark! Beemer vs Buick!
Repukes want the president to fail----does that mean they want America to fail as well?  I sure hope not but one could walk away with that in mind!  This is a different period of time and the country is in dire straits-----we need all parties working together but I guess from the actions of the Repukes-----they want the country to FAIL!
But now more than five months since George W. Bush left office, the Republican Party finds itself confronting a more immediate problem with the American public than Obama or the Democratic Party currently faces.

Yeah it's called credibility...they are telling everyone that their credibility is up 300%!!!!

from zero.
Well, it's about time Republicans started looking in the mirror...the first step in the road to recovery.

A word to the not-so-wise - people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
I know a lot of people with older cars that run damn near perfect. My brand new car has been in the shop more in 2 yrs than the neighbors 78 Regal has been in 20 yrs. Everything old is not bad and everything new is not good. New doesn't mean more knowledge. Old doesn't mean stupid.

The Poll is about Obama not republicans. You didnt tell how many Obama supporters were polled as compared to McCain supporters...........Now run tell that.
youtube - Obama Wins! Election Night Montage
__________
This is a stunning video of election night. These are pics of people not only in this country, but around the world once the election was called - look at the emotion on their faces. It is teary-eyed beautiful.

The GOP made this happen. ALL OVER THE WORLD. The Bush/Chene/GOP legacy.

Howard Dean - Bless you. You're right. We worked too hard for this, only to see the jealous republicans try and tear it all down. It's not going to happen.
All these polls are unfair! First off, we are in a recession, to get a good grade from people who are hurting is unheard of!  Second, the poll questions are somewhat manufactured and manipulated.  For ex: are you a conservative, a moderate or a liberal?  Now, Liberal has been sooo vilified that nobody wants to associate themselves with that name.  Nobody really knows what a conservative is, sounds good in a time of recession.  But what if we change conservative to neo-con, and liberal to progresssive.  They mean the same, but the poll percentages would change dramatically.  Just saying, watch these polls, they are probably manipulated to give the press(corruption there?)something to talk about!
The GOP needs to clean up its own mess before chuckling over fake drops ion the polls for the president. Last I checked his approval ratings were still near 70 percent...

This is one of the better articles I've read.  This clearly illustrates how so many true Americans feel.
"Under Reagan the motto was "Share the Wealth"
Under Obama (BoBO) the motto is "Share the Debt" "
BoBo the Prez

Hey Bozo - Obviously you aren't old enough or smart enough to remember it was Ronny Raygunz and his VooDoo Tinkle Down Economics that started this whole massive Reagan, Bush, Bush National Debt.  Raygunz created false wealth with his massive budget deficits as he transferred massive wealth from We the People to the rich and greddy few.  Get a Clue Clownboy!

It is so gratifying to see President Obama's aproval ratings stay so high while the approval numbers of the dopes of nope in Congress are falling down into the gutter where they belong.  The repugnant ones had better start listening to the majority of the people or they're going to face a big loss in 2010 and another in 2012.  The majority of Mainstream America does not trust the repugnant ones always whining about everything Obama does.

It will be amusing to see how the supporters of the dopes of nope spin this story of their losing party losing even more approval, to them they probably think that down is up.  Yeah been down so long it looks up to them, they're getting the Thomas Wolfe title down pat.  Get used to being the ignored minority for generations to come.

In Obama We Trust!
From Mark Murray, who has gone way out of his way to put this kind of a "spin" on this one.

Tiger advertises Buick and Dylan advertises Cadillac.

Who gives a damn about the BMW?Buick comparison?

Oh, and see the USA in your government runned Chevrolet.

From the First Thoughts thread: "Obama’s timeout: In the game of basketball, after your team commits some errors and after the opposition runs off a couple of easy baskets, you'll routinely see the coach make this move: call a timeout."
------------------------------------------------------

Maybe this doesn't have anything to do with lame sports analogies. Maybe President Obama is having a press conference because he _promised_ to have one a month. You guys are quick to pounce if Obama deviates from his campaign promises even slightly, but when he keeps them, you just ignore it.

As a Chicago pol once said, "Politics ain't bean bag." And it's not basketball either.
Thanks, FR for pointing out the obvious in the polls.  Too much of the media does not look at all the numbers.  The GOP should be concerned about the numbers within the numbers because those tell a very different story and it is not in favor of republicans.

Of course, Guantanamo numbers are down.  The gullible amoung us believed the chatter that a terrorist might move into the house next door.  When Pres Obama gets this mess sorted out and provides a written plan, that number will change.  Ironic that Bush wanted to close Gitmo and McCain campaigned to close it yet McCain and the GOP are out there stoking the fear fire to scare everyone.  No doubt republicans do want the president's car to break down but Obama is an intelligent man who doesn't miss much whereas Bush was smart but didn't pay attention and was incurious.

"Renegade" is a terrific read.  I'm only half through it but it certainly gives one insight into campaigning and the fatigue, grind, and downfalls.
NBC trying to may themselve feel relevant about their lopside polls; sorry aint gonna happen
I like the analogy except, cleary President Obama should be a 2009 Buick Enclave and the Republicans should be 1987 Honda or Toyota . . . now that these foreign cars are manufactured in "red states", the Republicans feel that they are "American" brands, remember?

And no, the Republicans don't need to change a thing. I think what they are doing is working BRILLIANTLY - showing America that they care about THEMSELVES more than anything or anyone else.

From previous post:

For once I agree with you Nashville Fan but please explain where Barack is going to get the $62 BILLION he has promised to spend over the next ten years on foreign aid? Remember the total long term debt of GM is only $47 Billion.

"President Obama’s 2010 budget seeks to double U.S. aid payments to other countries despite a $1.75 trillion deficit and the worst recession in over a quarter of a century."

Charity begins at home.

Not being a budget expert, I don’t know where President Obama is going to get  the money or IF he is going to get it.

But I do know that there are A LOT of things in our budget than can be cut. We can trim the waste and pet projects, stop letting corporations shirk their responsibilities in tax havens, and stop giving all these tax breaks for businesses who just pocket the savings and ship our jobs overseas anyway.

If we can pass REAL MEANINGFUL healthcare reform AND provide much needed   foreign aid, then I say WONDERFUL!

But MY priority is getting healthcare reform . . . and the whole “we can’t afford it” meme is a bunch of baloney - there are MANY things that we pay for every year that are not as important as healthcare.

============================================
Just because you say something doesn't make it true.
Health care reform WILL save money in the long run, and everyone knows it.

How?

By saving the administrative costs of billing and hunting down the uninsured who can't pay their medical bills.

By preventing many of the bankruptcies caused by people who can't pay their medical bills.

By saving hospitals and doctors the costs of caring for those who can't pay.

By giving millions access to preventative care that will save money on the treatment of the chronic conditons that develop as a result of no preventive care.

By preventing insurance companies from taking OUR MONEY on the front end, and not providing care on the back end.

And the list goes on and on. And I've only scratched the surface.

So the President IS NOT lying - you can disagree over whether the size of these savings will equal the cost of the program, but you CANNOT argue that the cost savings are a lie.

You have become something of a sad case because you don't use facts and your insults are baseless.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Republicans want the president to fail----
Terry, Disabled Vet, Des Moines, IA

No. We just know he will.
Houston: Maybe this doesn't have anything to do with lame sports analogies. Maybe President Obama is having a press conference because he _promised_ to have one a month.

Obama also promised to put large spending bills on the internet so common people would have time to examine and respond to them. That never happened.

Obama also promised 3-4 million jobs to be produced from the $800 billion stimulus bill. That never happened.

Obama also said his health care proposal would save the country money in the long run. The CBO said Obama's numbers are pure fantasy.

Now, about those promises Obama keeps making to us . . . .
The Democrats and Obama are a BMW? Laughable. They are more like a Yugo.
Of course the Republicans should be in the desert. We got our butts whooped 8 months ago. We are in "pragmatic mode". Chris Matthews posted a similar poll of Dems back in early 2001. We are right where the Dems were 8 years ago.

However, the Republicans were united in opposing the $787B, and the $3.5T budget. Obama did not get 1 Repub vote on those. The GOP is more united than many may think.

Obama is helping the GOP find it's "mojo". Voters know that the GOP is the one thing that can slow down the "big governement power grab" of Reid/Pelosi/Obama. What we need now are for good libertarian Republicans to run for local offices. Even if they don't win, they can shift the debate.

And Republicans need to be bold on budget cutting. A great way to get some press coverage now would be for the House GOP to announce plans to privatize Amtrack. With Biden as VP being a train rider, what better way to get Dolberman to spend a half hour on that? They should again call for eliminating the Dept. of Education within 5 years. This can be accomplished with providng block grants to states for 3 years to allow the states the time to figure out how to fund it themselves. States will then be the laboratory for education. I personally envision a dynamic, for-profit education system. And they can propse privatizing NASA. The GOP needs to call for the elimination of Depts.

What you want is a poll of Texans so you can feel good about your point of view.  Unfortunately, Texas does not represent the majority opinion so you're not going to change these numbers.  The GOP would like to be the '87 Buick but they're acting more like Studebakers!
So the message from First Read is that the Democrats and Obama suck, but the Republicans suck too?

And yet liberals want more and more government, from the very same people that suck at it. Interesting.
Totally off subject, but when is Ed going to get his web site or podcast up and running? I am missing all the good stuff because you are "bundling" all the videos together and it's hard to decifer which is Ed's videos on the web. Tired of loading Morning Joe videos, don't wanna see his face.  Please do something soon...Thanks!
First Read: (NBC/WSJ, CBS/NYT, ABC/WashPo) polls.

Gee, why not throw in polls from Huffington, DailyKos and Media Matters? If we're going to the left with these polls, lets go all the way.

Btw, DailyKos has Obama with a 120% approval rating.

You would think the way the republicans have been declining in popularity they would realize that the American people do not want or accept the negativity, obstruction, hypocrasy, party first and desire to destroy our country. But it all seems to go over their heads, never admitting to any responsibility, mistakes or having any desire to help our country or us. They have become a disgrace and a horrible example of what a politician should be.
There have to be some intelligent, decent republicans out there, but they are not speaking up, so all we have are  the dispicable party they have become.
"Of course, the political climate can change in the blink of an eye (think of Bush before and after Hurricane Katrina), and Republicans are hoping that Obama's BMW breaks down."

The press has turned positive poll numbers into negative poll numbers because the people who have money see that they may be asked to kick in their fare share for a change, who owns the media?
People like Joe Scarbourlgh that have free healthcare for life see no need for anyone else to have an opportunity to see a doctor, they may need that taxpayer money to bailout their financial portfolio again, the working stiff out in the real world is slowly starving to death because the good Republicans sent all the jobs out of the country so a handful of corporate types could get filthy rich then used all the taxpayer money to prevent all their wealthy financial buddies from losing a few bucks, now the money is all gone for healthcare reform, how long do you think it will be before folks in Iran are watching Americans out in the street throwing rocks?

Why is there a photo of David Bowie in this article?
The country will be tired of the Democrats before the next election. The Republcians will be a welcome replacement. Remember all those races the Democrats throught they has sewn up for 2010 - now many are becoming competitive. The Republicans have a very good chance to retake the House in 2010 and whittle down the Democrats numbers in the Senate.
Mark,, hit the nail again, the torture party has a real problem with polls that don't have favorable numbers in thwere favor. But they sure whine about Obama, all day every day,and what to show, there numbers are in the tank, the public has woken to the fact that the republiklans are about themself's.The big tent party is now a pup for two, while the numbers are telling, the torture party is spinning out of control, the water is getting close, and no one at the stick to pull them out.Crash and burn is whats left, and as long as the torture party keeps sending half wits like Lindsey and the Bomber, and dead Eye Dick to do there talking, the tail spin will continue, but I'm sure they will still be slamming Obama as the Plane hits the water. That Obama,,,,Bubbles,Bubbles.

You truly are a piece of work!!!! Funny how you hide behind a screen name and can not tell anyone your real name!!!!!!  Your party is done with get over it!!  Obama will not fail!!  He will succeed because he is a very intelligent<!!!!!  Your parties grotesque thoughts of wanting him to fail is enough to make a normal person sick to their stomach!!!! Which i can tell you that the way society feels about the republican now is not a good thing!!!! The disgust against the republican is only getting worse as each day passes, trust me on this one there is no sort of comeback at all for the republican party!!!

That's it. Obama should drag out the torture garabage again. He needs a distraction, and that one has worked before, and it will work again!

jesse, pure genius on your part!
Keep drinking the Kool-aid Republican University. I actually have more faith that The GOP will be a minority for some time to come. It's been their done that. What part of 25% approval dont you get. Democraphics and abysmal record of GOP and pandering to a shrinking whilte and regional base is not a winning formula.

I don't think the repukes even deserve to be classified as Buicks - maybe just the greasey sludge underneath.
Obama also promised 3-4 million jobs to be produced from the $800 billion stimulus bill. That never happened. - N. Fox.
-------

Yes he promised 3 million jobs in 3 months from a 787billion stimulus of which only $40 has been spent. I see we need the math and education part of the stimulus to kick off more aggressively. So we'll have a more aware electorate that doesnt always fight and argue against their own good after they spent decades electing and watching things going down the drain.
I know that Morning Joe is sponsored by Starbucks but are you guys working on a deal with BMW for First Read?
I have owned Buicks all my life and Buicks from the 80's were good cars, the 1990 Buick LeSabre was the TOP rated car on J.D. Powers initial quality survey.

BMW would still be making aircraft engines for the Third Reich if their plants were not smashed by American B-24 Liberators powered by Buick-built engines and M-18 Hellcat tank destroyers built by Buick!

Remember BMW's top of the line cars are powered by overhead valve engines. The overhead valve engine was invented by the Scottish born American engineer David Dunbar Buick!
PRESIDENT OBAMA IS DOING THE JOB HE WAS ELECTED TO DO AND DON'T LISTEN TO THE CHAT CABLE CLOWNS ANY MORE THEY ARE LOSRLOSERS AND HATERS THEY DON'T WANT OBAMA TO DO ANY THING POSITIVES ALL NEGATIVE ALL THE TIME. I READ ON LINE DICK MORRIS AND HANNITY HAS LOST THEIR MINDS THESE  DUMBBAHOES ARE REALLY TRAITORS TO THE COUNTRY AND  I WOULDN'T STOP THEM FROM TALKING LET THE PEOPLE SEE HOW INSANE THEY ARE. MY FRIEND SAID THEY WERE  CHAT UP ALL KINDS OF OUT  OF THIS WORLD SLAM ON THE PRESIDENT SHE SAID IT WAS SO OF TOUCH WITH THE PEOPLE WHO TOLD THEM NO ON NOV 8, 2008 AND JAN 20,2009 WHICH IS MY DAUGTHER 30th 2009 . THE PEOPLE HAS SPOKEN WE WANT YOU 2 LOSERS GONE AND DONE
The republicans and their tactics are insulting all of our intelligence.  If you honestly believe they're looking out for the best for their constituents or country, I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you.  Ask yourself, why aren't we all entitled to the same golden health care they receive?  Why would they consistently side with lobbyists instead of the american public?  Obama's numbers may be sliding a bit, but the only demographic group they haven't insulted or belittled has been middle aged white men - and that's just not going to cut it in national elections.

I'd vote for a cat turd before I'd vote for a republican - they have no intentions of moving this country forward, they're looking out for their best interests alone.

They've earned every bit of that 25% approval rating.
If Obama passes Compreshensive Healthcare Reform and there is even a HINT the jobs come back by next year, or at least some of the lost jobs, there is no stopping this President.  However, on the other hand, the party out of power in this country.....always seems to have the public's ear more than the party in power.  Obama needs to shout over all that noise and I agree he should keep going outside of Washington to do this.

If this is your idea of being constructively united, boy are you ever delusional.
Cicero (Sent Tuesday, June 23, 2009 11:32 AM)

While we're at it, why don't we privatize the military, social security, the interstate highway system, the FAA, the FDA, and every other government organization.

You criticize Amtrak (but you don't know how it is spelled) and say we should privatize it. Yet EVERY developed country in the world has a nationalized public railroad system. But where is your outrage over the socialized FAA and Federal Highway Administation? We will spend approximately $35B on highways, $14B on the FAA, and $900M on Amtrak.

Trains are the most fuel efficient method of transportation and are very time effective for short and medium distances. That is why corridors like the DC to Boston, Chicago to Milwaukee, San Diego to San Francisco, and Portland to Washington are so popular.

There are some responsibilities that our government has that are best left in the government - not as private industry!

Make no mistake, it will be a great day when GM is back in the private sector. And it will be a great day when AIG and the banks are all bank on their feet and totally back in the private sector, too. It makes sense to "boost" these organizations because of the huge roles they play in our economy, but then we need to get them back to the private sector. I don't think that makes sense for Amtrak as it will never make money, just like the FAA and Federal Highway Administration will never make money.
Thanks FR for putting proper perspective on these new numbers.  The President is down to a mere supermajority in his popularity numbers...this is a bad thing?  It's still 2 to 2.5 times the number his predecessor registered for over 2 years solid!  These numbers are only bad news in the up is down, day is night world of Conservative spin.

Setting the bar fairly low, aren't you?

Well, health care has all but failed. Just need to leave the Obama administration and the media put the blame on the Republicans, and that one is done.

Unemploymment will hit 15% soon. 20% in Michigan and Oregon. So maybe you should set the bar a little lower, like on the ground.
Well i wouldnt get to excited your polls are so low i have to find a pair of tweezers to find them....Fed up with both parties....Repub no mattter if thing were going good they would find fault, democrats wheres the change if your a big money supporter you get lucrative possession while americans with a vast amount of donations even if the were small is what got you the election, but what did we get, umemployement, no health care, shelter, jobs, food etc,  if i new big money would have got me a lucrative job i would have borrowed it....The way you guys spend money i would have gotten it back in no time....yep politics at its best and washington continue to take care of there own....you know the congressmen from NY, pelosi, and the list goes on....Change there is none...
