Sotomayor: The GOP's fine line

"Senate Republicans on Tuesday unveiled a new narrative ahead of Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation hearings, questioning her commitment to constitutional guarantees on the right to keep and bear arms and equal treatment under the law regardless of race or gender," the AP writes.
"The senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee even questioned whether Sotomayor sufficiently opposes terrorism, citing what he said was the 'extensive work' she had done for a group formerly named the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund. 'This is a group that has taken some very shocking positions with respect to terrorism,' Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama said."

Roll Call: "In a series of Senate floor speeches, Republicans leveled their harshest criticism of Sotomayor to date, accusing the federal judge and President Barack Obama of espousing a view of the judiciary based on empathy that is little more than racial or gender prejudice."

More from Jeff Sessions:
“When there is empathy toward one, is it not prejudice toward the other? There are always litigants on the other side, and they deserve to have their cases decided on the law. ... What I’ve seen thus far in Judge Sotomayor’s record -- and presumably some of her views are the reason President Obama selected her -- cause me concern that the nominee will look outside the law and the evidence in judging and that her policy preferences could influence her decision-making."

Mitch McConnell
“"called Sotomayor’s empathy 'troubling.' "Judge Sotomayor’s writings offer a window into what she believes having empathy for certain groups means when it comes to judging. And I believe that once Americans come to appreciate the real-world consequences of this view, they’ll find the empathy standard extremely troubling as a criterion for selecting men and women for the federal bench,” he said.

Doesn't matter what Jeff Sessions says, I believe he's a racist.  Taking the word empathy and tearing it apart is ridiculous. These A**holes better be careful with their attacks on Sotomayor, it'll come back to bite them hard.
What fine line?

The G-NO-P has made it clear...they want more time to consider the writings and rulings of Judge Sotomayor and yet they still have already determined that she is not qualified.

It's magic!

He is nothing more than a reed blowing in the wind...just confirm her. What good is all of the BS they are attempting anyway? They need to be doing their jobs.
So now "empathy" is the new "racism".  Give me a freakin' break.  It's like they're not even trying to hide their prejudice anymore...oh, I'm sorry, I meant "empathy".

When the going gets tough the evil elephants always resort to whining about someone trying to take away their guns.  What a bunch of limpwristed conservative crybabies who aren't brave enough to walk around our national parts without a loaded gun.  We have seen no evidence of her stance on guns, but that won't stop the irrelevant elephants from lying about it and making up their own pack of lies about Sotomayor's stance.  More fear and smear with no truth to back up the wild lies.

The party of white supremacist male chauvinist pigs doesn't want a woman of color on the bench, they only want an activist conservative judge who's willing to legislate from the bench to overturn Roe vs Wade.

Confirm Sotomayor Now!
Republicans worried about someone following the Constitution? Now that is a really funny one. We had 8 long years of just the opposite and they were in the majority at the time.

They'll huff and puff and posture. They'll grandstand and try a few gotcha questions but when all is said and done Sonya Sotomayor WILL be approved as the next Supreme Court Justice.
The Republicans are again showing the entire country that they have a problem living in today's world.  First they wanted more time to examine Judge Sotomayor's body of work -- now, without having looked at it, they have decided to mount an attack against her because President Obama mentioned the word "empathy" when discussing potential nominees to the Supreme Court.  If one is "empathetic," one has the ability to understand from within what another being is experiencing.  If one were empathetic, that understanding would extend to both sides presenting an argument in court and would not automatically extend to only one side of it.
Sotomayor is a big mistake, only because she was chosen by Obama, who is the bigger mistake.
