GOP questions Sebelius on health care

From NBC’s Winston Wilde
Republican members on the House Energy and Commerce Committee wanted Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius

to promise this morning that the president demands his broad health care overhaul will not add to the deficit.

Rep. Joe Barton asked Sebelius: “I want to establish on the record: there'll be no increase in the deficit?”

To which Sebelius assured: “That's what the President has stated: it will be paid for.”

Sebelius echoed that she shared the President's philosophy: “Protect what works, and fix what's broken,” she said. She also said in her testimony that the president has already pinpointed inefficiencies in the current health-care system from which about $950 billion in revenue can be generated over the next decade.

Video: Senate Democrats have reportedly cut about $400 billion off their health care proposal, bringing the $1.6 trillion price tag under $1.2 trillion. Sen. Robert Bennett, R-Utah, discusses how this is still more than most lawmakers are willing to spend.

Many Republican members remained skeptical that these funds could finance the lofty health-care reforms proposed in the House's draft legislation.

Sebelius cautioned that she is still waiting on the Congressional Budget Office score report that would actually put a number on how much the proposed health-care legislation would cost.

When it's something the people actually want, we can't add to the deficit. But it's ok for illegal wars, etc. etc. Way to go GOP.
Back to Diane Feinstein. Feinstein knows what too much government can do to a state. She sees it first hand in the state she is from. That has to give he pause when she sees Obama trying to do the same against the country. Feinstein knows you can't keep giving things away and not expect people to pay for them.

Boxer is another story. She's to stupid to see the forest for the trees.
Kathleen Sebelius GETS this one.  She was the former Executive of the Insurance Commissioners.  If anyone knows how they operate, she does.

Everyone on the board knows that the insurance industry isn't 'regulated' per se, right?  Each state has an Insurance Commissioner and they 'police' themselves.  What could possibly go wrong with that?

Kathleen Sebelius said it on John King this past Sunday; but you know the media is too wrapped up in what the MINORITY party has to say to track the relevance of the party the public elected.  What goes around comes back around, all in due time.
Feinstein sat on her lofty perch and didn't do a single thing to stop the Bush dismanteling of our nation's economy. I don't trust her, she has gotten arrogant. There comes a time when replacement is warrented and her time has come.

HCR will not affect the deficit. Special interest programs in certain States do.

exactly,...And to all the naysayers regarding 'government' run anything:

Are you saying we don't have the BEST military in the World?  When it MATTERS to us, we get it right.  So stop the quivering, fear mongering.  This is TOO important to screw it up.  And to the other whiners about how government will drive out competition - as someone else noted today - Yet, FEDEX and UPS somehow manage a profitable model?  Hmmm?
FR: To which Sebelius assured: “That's what the President has stated: it will be paid for.”

Paid for? By whom? If Sebelius doesn't know, then she should get her little butt out there and find out. And also, will Sebelius's little plan be covering illegals?
Fighting the GOP @ this point is light beating up on a paper tiger.  It is going to take some time to find enought waste to foot this bill, it is there and we will do it.  Don't worry about the "Republican National Guard", they are to busy pulling the trigger, and shooting them self on their foot. They would be wise to shut their mouth, and put a "safety" on their trigger.
She [Sebelius] also said in her testimony that the president has already pinpointed inefficiencies in the current health-care system from which about $950 billion in revenue can be generated over the next decade.

Hahahahahahahahaah!!! Too funny. Tell you what Kathleen, you make those improvements in the efficency of the health care system and come back and show us that you're saving $100 billion a year. After you do that, we can talk about spending more money on health care.

More lies from the Obama administration.
I'm looking forward to the ABC program tonight to tell us more about what is going to happen with health care.

I've seen lots of complaints from the republicans on this site that the GOP isn't getting equal time. I don't think they need equal time, but it would have been nice if ABC would have given the republicans 60 seconds at the end of the show so they could say:

1 - No
2 - "Socialized medicine" will never work
3 - It will destroy our medical system
4 - The deficit is out of control
5 - It will raise your taxes
6 - Our plan is to cut taxes

They could have prepared it before the broadcast because we all know it doesn't matter what President Obama says. They will oppose anything he says or does.
Healthcare is certainly going add to the deficit if we don't do anything so we might as well make it work for the consumer instead of the insurance companies. The Republicans should be quiet about the deficit since they created it, go figure
Suzanne, look closer at those surveys. When ask if they would want everyone to have insurance, the answer is a high positive. But when those same people are asked to foot the bill (aka higher taxes) the approval rating drops fast. People like the ideal, but they do not like the expense. And that poll did not even cover the outragious 1.6 trillion dollar plan. With that overpriced plan, the approval rating is super low.

Please understand. We all want healthcare reform. We all want to protect everyone. But the liberal method is too costly. The Obama plan will not fix the problem and will only make it worse.

You accuse of the right-wing of opposing the will of the people. But we see the left-side taking a good ideal, ruining it, overcharging for it, and then trying to ram their twisted version down the collect throats of america.

Tell me, is 1.6 trillion dollars a fair price tag for providing insurance for just 1/3 of the uninsured? It is not full medical expenses, it is not universal coverage, and it does not solve any of the issues in the medical field. It is merely lots of money wasted.

A vote against the Obama plan is not a vote against healthcare reform. It is a vote against the ruin that the Obama plan would cause.
Kind of like bush's wars...they will be paid for
Congratulations to Secretary Sebelius.  She handled herself with dignity and calm intellegence today.  It was a nice thing to watch.
Actually what we see from Ca. is the people asking for services and then refusing to pay for them - it puts the state government in a bit of awkward position. Way to live by referendum.
You know, at this point who cares or gives any creditibility to anything the republicans say.
They have sold the American people down the river
for big business and that will never change.
The American people overwhelmingly support health care reform and the public option.
Costs can and will be cut, one example is when we do away with the republican stipulation in the prescription program that competitive pricing was not allowed.
However, we cannot sacrifice the American people in looking for cuts and cannot let big business, lobbyists and special interests continue to run us and our country.
So, Sebelius actually did not tell us her own opinion, or her own evaluation. All she said was "That's what the President said."

Isn't she qualified to answer the question? Shouldn't she be able to say that she believes it is true? Why isn't she answering the question with her evaluation?

"That's what the President said" will be a small comfort when the costs start rolling in. With this large of a cost, it likely will be both--deficit and huge taxes.
Why can't people understand that fixing a broken health care system is not a liability but an investment in the future. The health care industry is now the health doesn't care industry. They have enjoyed record profits over the past several decades and don't want to give up their gravy train. This is their doing and too bad if they complain and cry about being regulated.

Feisty gave an informative explanation about a five hour procedure she had done and was billed (which her provider paid for) considerably less than someone with no insurance would be billed. The providers guarantee a number of such procedures (quota) and are billed at a reduced rate for the higher volume, kind of like the lower cost per pound for family size in the supermarket. What she left out is if the quota goes over the target by a large amount, shoddy workmanship may result.

As example, a few years ago a blood test showed my prostate (psa) level was well above (22) my normal reading of 2.3 to 2.5. My doctor called me immediately and hooked me up with a referral for an urologist. At a preliminary appointment, he set up a biopsy procedure. He said "a few" bites would be taken out of my prostate (actually 24, by my teeth clenching count.) At a third visit I was informed that no cancer was found, to my great relief, and another blood test was taken. At my fourth visit (I have a $30 co-pay) I was told my number was back down to my normal 2.5. When I questioned the accuracy of the original test, the urologist told me that when a large underestimation of the quota occurs, the tests are often hurried and mistakes more often occur. Several months later, that urologist called me to fire me as a patient because he said my insurance refused to pay the levels his practice demanded. This is a great example of the for profit deficiencies of health care.

The Scripts care for children that was passed by the Obama administration is a sound financial investment. By granting preventative care for the young, the chances decline significantly that more costly illness will occur. I don't care if a child has insurance or not, no child in this great country is going to be denied care for a lack of funds and that includes illegal immigrants.

Those without health care, crowd the emergency rooms of our hospitals across the entire country. These people are not denied care, but their costs are passed on to the system, much like stolen items at the supermarket cause the mark up to increase, causing a higher purchase price for the rest of us to pay. The same analogy is true in medical procedures. Those unpaid bills are passed on to the system and part is paid by you and me. By giving care to everyone, preventative measures will help stop serious illness, making the total cost go down. Again, universal health care is a sound investment in our future...
A new report shows that the public plan will SAVE lots of bucks. The GOPers have been lying and parsing again as usual

Public health plan could save money faster: policy group
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090624/hl_nm/us_insurance_options_3

It is clear that the special interest are aligned to stop or slow this down, but folks HEALTH CARE IS BROKEN!

I forget where I read this yesterday but if Medicare is so bad the why do Seniors like it?

Sec Sebelius is working hard to support the President. I am happy that she is on point as Tom Dashle showed where his bread was buttered by asking the Dems to drop the public option.

Public option will SAVE plenty of $$!

Also let's put this into perspective. 1 Trillion for 10 years is 100 Billion/year. Now how much have we spent in Iraq on a "war of choice" in the last 6 years.

Give me a break GOPers! Where were you when Dubya-Darth wanted to play cowboy liberators in a part of the world they knew virtually nothing about?
Pat: If you are doing research on Romney, you may want to save stuff on Huckabee.  Romney has the money, Huck has the right wing.  Really early prediction: Huck will beat Romney.

Latest on Stanford.  He has had an eight year affair with...some female.  It was announced on CNN earlier this PM.

Here we go again.  Republican support a preemptive war, but not health care for Americans.  Republicans look at money.  Dems look at people needing health coverage.  What a shame.
