Fighting back tears at a news conference he assembled, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) admitted that he had an affair with a woman living in Argentina. "I have been unfaithful to my wife," he said. "I hurt you all. I hurt my wife. I hurt my boys. And all I can say is I apologize."

Sanford also announced he was resigning his position as chairman of the Republican Governors Association.

The governor's stunning revelation caps a three-day media frenzy, in which it was first reported that the governor was missing; then his staff said he had been hiking the Appalachian Trail; and this morning, the State newspaper discovered he had been in Argentina.

Video: South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford holds a news conference to explain his absence from the state, and admits he's been having an affair with an Argentinean woman.

In the news conference, Sanford revealed that the affair began about a year ago, that he's seen the woman three times since it began, and that his wife and family found out about it five months ago. Sanford said he and the woman exchanged e-mails and the relationship began as a "casual" friendship. He seemed to suggest that his reason for traveling to Argentina was to end the extramarital affair. He said he spent five days "crying" there, so "repeat it when I came back here."

He also said he told his staff that the Appalachian Trail where he was thinking about going.

Sanford apologized to a myriad of people, including his wife, four sons, friends and the state of South Carolina. He asked for forgiveness, but said he understood that would not come easily.

"I'm committed to trying to get my heart right," he said.

There is something seriously wrong with the GOP and their supporters. These are the same people who criticized President Obama for taking his wife to NYC and Paris for dinner.

I’m not kidding. This Republican Party is creepy. The real family man is the one who leads by example, not by bragging and dictating to others how to live their lives like the right wing has been doing for years. We are all just human beings, trying to live as decent a life as possible. Why the republicans can’t get this concept is beyond me. They think they are perfect beings. Well, they’re not. What they are is - out to lunch.

Democrats make mistakes. Independents make mistakes. And  now we know, so do the Republicans. Actually, we’ve always known this. It’s their supporters who “pretend” they are the party of family values and we’re all a bunch of sinners. This is the 21st Century, right? The dumbing down of America is now complete.

I have no problem with the Governor staying in his position. It’s none of  my business. Just like everything else.
"I have been unfaithful to my wife," he said. "I hurt you all. I hurt my wife. I hurt my boys. And all I can say is I apologize."

----------------------------------------------------

Apology accepted, now pack your stuff into a brown box and leave your duties to the Lieutenant Governor.

That would be the honorable choice...take your buddy ensign with you.

P.S.  I said the same thing to Bill Clinton when he did it too...I still blame him for GWB being elected in the first place.
This is just too funny!!

What say the repubs on here to dropping the moniker of "The Party of Family Values?"

Actions speak louder than words, remember??

WOW!  All I  can say is WOW!  Just watched the Sanford Circus and his wife Ginny deserves a GIANT SHOUT OUT for not standing next to the lying cheating scumbag!

He gets the HYPOCRIT of the year award with the bit about we’ve been working on our marriage for 5 months now with the help of some fine Christian group… but the hell with you & the kids on Father’s Day… I’m thinking with my little head and taking me a little junket to go visit my mistress (wonder if it’s possible it’s a transgender male – but that’s a whole nother conversation) in Argentina!!!

Oh and lest we forget LIE to your staff and citizens of your state about your whereabouts! But hey I’m a family values guy and there’s no way there going to find out… right??

Throw in the crocodile tears and his religion and the set-up is complete! These b@stards appear to take PRIDE in humiliating their wives & children – all because they can’t keep it zipped! Family values… my a@@!
Hypocrisy thy name is REPUBLICAN. (Family values, my donkey) Another GOP creep exposed. Who is next?

These are the same people who came unglued because Bill Clinton got a little from a consenting adult gold digging, ambitious floozie. Yes I said floozie.
Wow !!

A SLEAZY, ADULTEROUS SEXUAL AFFARI ON FATHER'S DAY !!

Another 'Family Values' Republican !!

Let me guess......
.... I'll bet the Republicans 'forgive him' like they did 'Family Values' and 'Proimise Keeper' Sen. John Ensign...

And 'Family values' Sen. David Vitter...

And 'Rebuilding America's Civilization' Newt Gingrich..

And Cross Dressing Adulterer Rudy Giuiliani

And Coke Head, Alcoholic George Bush...

And Draft Dodging 'Patriot' Dick Cheney....

WHAT A JOKE !!!

Have a good cry, Governor
What did your wife say ??
No Problem:

WELCOMEEEE To The CLUBBBBB.
The irony is that these are the people who are opposed to stable, nurturing relationships between gay men and women in the interest of "family values". give me a break.
This is what I stated early this morning.

What kind of man just takes off and doesn't tell his family where he is going? An American politician thats who! There is more to this story than we are hearing now. Its amazing the kind of persons you Americans put in office. Just like Edward Kennedy years ago leaves his secretary, he is doing, to drown, but saves his own neck. But he lives on as a national hero. No wonder this country is going to the dogs.
Don't cry for me Argentina!
Wow.  Two in one month?  And it's not over yet.

Face it, Repubs, with this rate of attrition, Pawlenty's gonna be the only guy left by 2012, and only if he's very lucky.

LOL, lol, lol! I'll collect my bets now! Is this the season for affairs? WTF?!?. I guess he feels that all he has to do is join the ranks of the rest of the "special luncheon" crowd apologize and be done with it?

Each one of them need to resign. Didn't they hold impeachment hearings on Clinton? Didn't they hold him in "high" moral standards? Better yet...I'll take it back...they are being exposed and it's their own doing.

There will be more to come just wait. I'll bet there will be more to come. lol, lol, lol, lol...
Love you Mark (Murray) thatis, but I don't think starting the article with his valiant effort to fight back the tears was the correct way to frame the article.

In this all to familiar and almost predicatable outcome, it was not the 'softer' things of Gov. Sanford that landed him here, but rather the 'harder' things. {crass I know, but couldn't resist)
I don't get it, the moral, family values, GOP seems to have a lot more trouble remaining faithful to their marriage vows that the Dems do.  It seems like being a Republican is the real threat to the sanctity of marriage, not same sex marriages.
Well, here we go again.  Another santimonious/holier- than-thou REPUBLICAN who has lost his so-called "FAMILY VALUES".  Funny, how they can try to tell us what's right and wrong, but I guess these same "VIRTUES" don't apply to them.  What a bunch of conflicted and hypocritical jerks they are.
GzeroP, you live by the bible-thumper, so shall you perish.  While a certain amount of (hetero)sexual impropriety might be forgiven, the sanctimony of the supporters you have been courting since Reagan will not allow you to escape the political hypocrisy.  You've left yourselves no escape, and now you're going to have no end of trouble getting rid of the girl you brung to the dance.

Might as well start a new party, and cede this one to the theocrats.
What is wrong with these people?  Why do we elect them?
And these are the same yahoo's telling me I've no right to marry my same sex partner, because of the so called sanctity of marriage.

The hypocracy of this is utterly amazing!
What a nice little distraction for the Democrats. They get to point their fingers at Sanford and say what a terrible person he is.

This while: 1) Barney the Frank wants to loosen regulations on Fannie and Freddie Mac 2) Warren Buffet says the economy is in shambles with little hope of any recovery soon 3) NKorea is talking about shooting a missile at Hawaii 4) Suicide bombers have returned to Iraq 5) Protests continue, and the killing of protestors, continues in Iran 6) Barack's hometown is running out of blood to give to shooting victims 7) Prostitutions are accepting bags of chips as payment in Oklahoma City.
Right-wing outrage about alleged media failure to report National Enquirer's story about John Edwards in...3...2...1...
Argentina women are hot!
Feisty Redhead Roselle,IL

There's more to come I am sure! What do you make of this? I just posted holding bets that something else was going on. This is too creepy.
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!! The Republican Holier then thou party has been shown once again for the hypocrites that they are. Why is it the more up tight and conservative people tend to be the freakier their lives are. They need to SHUT THE F&%$ UP when it comes to speaking about their moral superiority. I feel sorry for his wife a kids for what they are about to be put through.
Happy Father's Day Governor Sanford!

Hey Feisty, I'm not defending Sanford, but as I recall John Edwards and Elliot Spitzer are Democrats.  This is not a Republican problem.  This is a problem with politicians in general.  Their egos are unchecked, and they think they can get away with anything.

If we instituted term limits, we could get these people out of office, before their egos grow to mountainous size, and we could always have public servants who serve the people, instead of themselves.  The longer these people stay in office, the more corrupt and immoral they get.

Love means never having to say yuou're sorry

Schadenfreude:  the enjoyment taken from the misfortune of someone else

I'm feeling a WHOLE LOT OF SCHADENFREUDE !!!
These are the same people who came unglued because Bill Clinton got a little from a consenting adult gold digging, ambitious floozie. Yes I said floozie.
eagle1776

Nah. It was the lying under oath thing, but thanks for trying.
wow.  I'm stunned.  What the heck is going on with the GOP?  Is there anyone out there isn't fooling around?  As a Republican, I'd switch parties but I cannot stand the thought of being a Democrat with people like Pelosi, Franks, Edwards, ...
Well, at least the Congressional Pages are safe, for now.
"I'm committed to trying to get my heart right," he said.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's not his heart that got him in trouble in the first place! Blech what a CREEP!
This is a big disappointment for the conservatives. He'll have a tough time living it down, BUT, oh hell, Bill Clinton screwed over Hillary for years and was impeached for it and he's back, after all those lies, even the Bush Family likes him and obviously doesn't care.
John Edwards, the little priss and darling of the Dems until he cheated on his cancer-ridden wife. The Dems haven't accepted him back into the fold, at least not completely.
Will the conservatives accept Sanford back? Let's just say you can cross his name off the presidential ticket and he'll lose the next election.
That's what the tea-baggers are out there for today.
A flat tax and getting rid of anyone, Dem or Repub, who is out of bounds with their own ideology, keeping it fair. Most are not Obama friendly but the issue is tax and spend, whether liberal or conservative.
There is something seriously wrong with the GOP and their supporters. These are the same people who criticized President Obama for taking his wife to NYC and Paris for dinner.
-------------------
On the taxpayer dime. During a recession. When having a job for most Americans is a luxury. Kind of cold of Obama, don't you think?
He pulled an old Jim Baker! This is a sad day. I feel sorry for his wife and children...all jokes aside, he is shameful and he should resign.
His wife had enough...she actually started everyone else to looking and questioning...good for you Mrs. Sanford!
The party of family values is at it again. The truth is gays aren’t ruining the sanctity of marriage the creeps in the Republican Party are. These fools cannot be trusted to keep their D***s in their pants long enough to run anything let along the government.
I guess all those who thought nothing about this issue need to re-evaluate themselves.  The affair is bad enough as a supposed family values man, the bigger and more serious problem is: HE WENT AWOL as Governor for the citiizens of S.C. and he also knows that from his military background as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!Another self righteous Repuke going down in burning flames!
He should be kicked out as Governor, and kicked out of his home by his wife and children. He isn't sorry - and his apology is just another "word" with no real feeling or meaning in it. He's been caught and that's the reason for the "apology." How can he apologize to his wife and children, and his constiuents in his state and actually believe they are going to forgive him! Clinton did the same thing - and his wife stayed with him only because she wanted to continue to be "First Lady," she didn't give a damn about what Clinton did, as she knew he'd been doing it for years.
What a disgraceful position these men, Dems and Reps put America in, no wonder we have no value to anyone in the world. Disgusted and fed up with these men who think they can do anything they want to their country, their wives, their children. What an example he has set for the rest of the nation. He smells like three day old fish - wrap him in a newspaper and get rid of him. Who can ever believe him again. This kind of behavior doesn't stop, it goes on and on and on, and men keep saying, "I'm sorry. I apologize," and expect that is forgiveness from his family and his state and nation.
So what does that make the Dems? Larry Flint looks like St. Peter compared to some of the Democrats.
Democrats- the Party of Infidelity, Abortion Doctors but we do care about the Enviromment!
Ok wait a minute, bill clinton had affairs, john edwards had a affair (maybe more) john mccain had a affair, sarah palin had a affair. to me this does not take away from there ability to hold office. this was there business, for god sake JFK and RFK had affairs as well as there father, but we did not hold it against them. as much as i do not like the republicans of this day, please lets not hold this against this governer, lets leave it up to the people of his state to decide if they want him to be relected.
thill out folks, affairs happen every day, there are more important issues to be discussed,
health care
high employment
2 wars
deficets
iran
iraq
as long as he is not a priest who cares.
Right-wing outrage about alleged media failure to report National Enquirer's story about John Edwards in...3...2...1...
Pete - Albany, NY
You appear to be the first, and last to mention Mr. Edwards. Here's wishing good health to both him and his wife.
More republican family values, go figure.
Holy Hannah!!  What in the world was he thinking???  I don't understand how so many in the public eye think they can possibly get away with having their cake and eating it too.  I don't feel the least bit sorry for him but I'm deeply sorry and painfully embarrassed for his family.
You guys are so funny.  Only when it's a Republican is it ok to berate them for having an extramarital affair.  I get the whole hypocrisy element you all love to spout off about.  However, you guys really think that it's ok for Democrats to have extramarital affairs because, hey, at least they're not hypocritical about it?  Please.  Every single one of those politicians (whether there's a "D" or an "R" behind their name) uses their families (i.e., their wives/husbands and children) as assets on the campaign trail, and in doing so, they're sending the message that they are a normal, everyday family man/woman.  And besides, why are we berating people for promoting family values in the first place?  What's wrong with family values?  Right is right, and wrong is wrong...that's really all there is to it.  Regardless of what the comments here tend to say and the media tends to press, this is certainly NOT a partisan issue...but it's comical watching you all turn it into one.  It just solidifies my belief that some people in this country can be so completely ridiculous at times...
On a side note, I love it how liberals are all about open dialogue and open-mindedness, but in reality, they are only open-minded when the person shares their views.  If someone dares to speak a different viewpoint from theirs, they are persecuted.  Case in point (however trivial): the now former Miss California.  She gave her perspective on the gay marriage issue, and because it wasn't in line with the liberal viewpoint, she was criticized and called many despicable names.  Why can't you liberals be open to what someone like her has to say, if you are actually about free speech and open dialogue?  Just a thought...
Just for the record, I consider myself a left-leaning moderate...I grow less and less liberal with age and experience, but I have always seen the middle as ideal.
His wife had enough...she actually started everyone else to looking and questioning...good for you Mrs. Sanford!   -- Good answer!   Go Mrs. Sanford.  Kick him to the curb. I don't think adultery should make him resign the governorship, though  My bigger problem is that he left the state unattended.   For that, he should resign.   If he wants to be with this woman in Argentina, then let Mrs. Sanford take him for everything, force him to resign and move to Buenos Aires.
What a nice little distraction for the Democrats. They get to point their fingers at Sanford and say what a terrible person he is. - Tammy Mayes - Kansas
-----------------------------
It would probably be more meaningful if it was a nice little distraction for Republicans.  Sanford is not a terrible person for what he did.  Reality is, he is flesh and the flesh is weak.  The propensity to do what he did is within each of us to do, so in that regard he is no different than I.
What is different is the continual political and moral posturing that this party seems so found of doing.  It was/is the words of the GOP that continue to from the noose...it is their ridiculous actions that continue to land their heads in it.
Perhaps those who are painting this only as a problem of infidelity should ponder how appropriate it is for a state Governor to be out of contact with his constituents and representatives for 5+ days while he visits his mistress in another country on the bottom half of the planet.
Sanford - Palin 2012!!!!
It will be like a VH1 reality show.
My bet would be on Charlie Crist.  Yes he is a moderte republican and so I do not wish him ill.  But I am betting he has something hidden in his closet.
Feisty,
you are a hoot Fertile Myrtle, lol, lol I like it! No she hasn't has she. She didn't produce her medical records either.
The press conference and apology - What a stinking steaming pile of hooey.  Spare me your phony dramatics.  He's an adult, he knew what he was doing was wrong when he did it.
Those who scream the loudest about family values etc. typically are those with something to hide.  Maybe the retreads will go for a three-fer - think another cheater will be exposed this week?  Disgusting.  Do as they say, not as they do.
wow.  I'm stunned.  What the heck is going on with the GOP?  Is there anyone out there isn't fooling around?  As a Republican, I'd switch parties but I cannot stand the thought of being a Democrat with people like Pelosi, Franks, Edwards, ...
