Fighting back tears at a news conference he assembled, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) admitted that he had an affair with a woman living in Argentina. "I have been unfaithful to my wife," he said. "I hurt you all. I hurt my wife. I hurt my boys. And all I can say is I apologize."

Sanford also announced he was resigning his position as chairman of the Republican Governors Association.

The governor's stunning revelation caps a three-day media frenzy, in which it was first reported that the governor was missing; then his staff said he had been hiking the Appalachian Trail; and this morning, the State newspaper discovered he had been in Argentina.

Video: South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford holds a news conference to explain his absence from the state, and admits he's been having an affair with an Argentinean woman.

In the news conference, Sanford revealed that the affair began about a year ago, that he's seen the woman three times since it began, and that his wife and family found out about it five months ago. Sanford said he and the woman exchanged e-mails and the relationship began as a "casual" friendship. He seemed to suggest that his reason for traveling to Argentina was to end the extramarital affair. He said he spent five days "crying" there, so "repeat it when I came back here."

He also said he told his staff that the Appalachian Trail where he was thinking about going.

Sanford apologized to a myriad of people, including his wife, four sons, friends and the state of South Carolina. He asked for forgiveness, but said he understood that would not come easily.

"I'm committed to trying to get my heart right," he said.

It is just a sad day for America when a person we elect screws up in front of all America.  His wife and children must feel so much shame.
So much for 2012, Mark. PS: Thanks for making way for Palin.

It is just a sad day for America when a person we elect screws up in front of all America.  His wife and children must feel so much shame.  Maybe the lady needed a green card???
I don't know what is worse; the fact that he cheated on his wife or the fact that he didn't tell anyone where he was going.  Looking solely at the governmental actions, then I would be willing to vote him out because he failed to do his job.  This is one of those 24/7 jobs.  Okay, he can take a few days off and have the Lt. governor take over, but with some warning.

I have to feel sorry for his wife who knew nothing and didn't know where he was.  I tell my wife where I am if I need to do something out of the ordinary.  Does he still love his wife?  How can he say that he loves her when he can't be there for her and their kids.

The world is coming to an end since the Democrats are have finicial corruption and the Republicans are getting caught with their pants down.
Hold up, all you claimers that the Dem's have examples of politicians who cheat... The difference is a DECLARATION of FAMILY FALUES as your party's calling card.  When the GOP get all sanctimonious and judgemental, then pull these repeated stunts.  Dem's should be ashamed, yes, but the GOP uses FV as its big party differentiator.

So sorry to those trying to dismiss this and look to those issues more important. Face it, this was a bad day for the Thuglicans.  To trivialize it is to show your own trivialization of such a bad & chronic act.
I'm sorry, so sorry
Please accept my hypocrisy ....
To all those pointing fingers at Dems who have high profile affairs--it's the GOP that make a huge deal about being about "Family Values" and "Sanctity of Marriage"--that's the difference.
Anyway, Sanford is a good representative for the Party of Business--he offshored his affair!
Repub family values = Hypocrisy
Well, I always knew this was a repugnant problem (one the Democrats unfortunatley tried as well - hopefully they won't again), this started being ok when we as a nation threw out a faithful husband who was a Baptist Sunday school teacher for a whoremonger with two living spouses - yep ronnie and nancy had a hot and heavy way before he left his first wife (my mom actually remembers this scandel and claims it is one of the reasons ronnie was never more than a "b" grade actor).
Both parties do it, both are wrong, but at least now the repugnants are being exposed too - as they should be.
Wonder if Ms. Sanford will actually stand up and do the right thing - remember that guy from Lousiana who said she would have done all kinds of things to her husband if he behaved like Bill Clinton?  Well, she didn't did she?  and we know that makes her just as guilty as he is.
Right-wing outrage about alleged media failure to report National Enquirer's story about John Edwards in...3...2...1...
Pete - Albany, NY

You appear to be the first, and last to mention Mr. Edwards. Here's wishing good health to both him and his wife.

Republican Gal
===================================
I will tack on to this. There was nothing "alleged" about it. The media had very good tipoffs that this was happening and they refused to cover it until after the Iowa primary which was politically motivated.

So far as this is concerned I personally am not concerned with it as I'm not with any poltician. I expect it and as long as they are not lying in public about it it is not an issue.

Social conservatives are hypocrites a lot of the time. I am fiscally conservative but socially moderate. However the left telling people how to live is just as bad as the right telling people how to live. The left and the right have power and control as common bonds with their social policies.

Open up another CAN of Republicans!
I lived through the public embarassment of a "cheating lying dog". My ex-husband only suffered the loss of a marriage, a home, and the respect of his children....What I can't understand is that this man forfeited all that, and his career, his public respect, and made a mockery of his moral values.  for what????  Makes one question his mental health...
