Press corps dunks WH press secretary

It's no secret that White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs is in the tank for President Obama, but this time it's the White House press corps who put him there.

At least three dozen reporters, producers, photographers, and cameramen joined Obama staffers on the South Lawn this afternoon for a chance to plunge Gibbs into a dunk tank set up -- as part of a luau the White House is staging for members of Congress and their families.

The informal event was added to the schedule after reporters pressed Gibbs for the opportunity during the afternoon briefing.

Outside, thatched roof huts and multicolored table spreads decorated the lawn along with a volleyball net and a band shell, while inflatable sharks floated in the fountain.

Gibbs removed his glasses and passed them to an aide as he took his spot in the tank, behind bright red bars. He wore a long sleeved navy shirt and shorts.

Fox Correspondent Mike Emanuel was the first up to pitch, but missed at all three attempts. Second up was AP correspondent Ben Feller.

"Feller did you play college baseball?," Gibbs called out from the tank, joking about the water temperature ."It's warmer than it was when I checked earlier."

Feller sunk Gibbs on his third try and got cheers and high fives from the assembled press and a handshake from the press secretary.

Chicago Sun Times reporter Lynn Sweet also missed at her attempts, but CBS Correspondent Bill Plante hit the lever on his first try.

"Thanks," Gibbs said after Plante dunked him, later adding in response to a question: "We'll be back for members of Congress."

He will be joined at the tank tonight by White House staffers Phil Schiliro and Rahm Emanuel.

The White House expects some 2,000 members of Congress and their families to attend tonight's event. All of them will get plastic leis. Per the first lady's office, there will be Polynesian dancers and fire blowers, a DJ who will play Hawaiian music and favorites like the Beach Boys and Elvis and hula lessons.

Earlier in the day, First Lady Michelle Obama drew laughs from the audience and a smile from her husband when she mentioned the luau and briefly demonstrated a hula dance at a service event the First Family attended.

The president himself seemed pretty excited about the event, telling a bipartisan group of members of Congress at the end of a meeting on immigration: "Oh, and by the way, I hope everybody has got their Hawaiian shirts and their muumuus for our luau tonight."

White House staffers who gathered to witness the event included speechwriter Jon Favreau, West Wing receptionist Darienne Page (AKA ROTUS), and Social Secretary Desiree Rogers.

Love Robert Gibbs, nice guy who is still as tough as he needs to be with the "take no prisoners" press corp!
So when is the media going to critically cover the Obama administration and not have play dates with them?
This would seem one way to build some bipartisan cooperation.
Now that's a funny story to end the day with.  Robert Gibbs is truly a joy to watch and listen to after all those lying buffoons from Clueless George.  That's pretty funny that he went into the dunk tank.  How funny that Mike from fox and freaks couldn't hit the target, just shows what kind of girly men they have at fox and freaks.  Best of all is that luau afterwards hosted by the best hosting couple in the world - the Obamas!

"GWB was very much a liberal... cramming morality down peoples throat... it's government dictating lifestyle... So yeah he cut taxes and then went on a spending spree (Ronny Raygunz started that nonsense Jon) that's not being a republican or conservative that's being an idiot.  I won't dispute George Bush jr. was stupid, but if we're talking policy he was more liberal than conservative...He was a liberal with an eternal streak of stupid."
Jonathan Siglow

Hey Jonathan - You and Clueless George do have one thing in common - you both have an eternal streak of stupid.  Nice try to avoid being responsible for bringing that clueless liar to the White House but Clueless George has been and will always be a repugnant one conservative.  Maybe you missed his dating one of Nixon's daughters back in the 70's right before he went AWOL to work on his political career.  Maybe you missed his worthless President Dad stopping the SEC investigation into how he bankrupted his own oil company by stealing from it.  Sorry but Clueless George is your piece of trash and you must take responsibility for your mistake by confessing to the truth that your party has wrecked our economy and international reputation.  As they say confession is good for the soul, so fess up or face eternal damnation!

In Robert Gibbs We Trust!
Haven't seen Obama since MJ passed on. Hmmmm.
They wouldn't want to put a Republican on the dunk tank seat because they are already all wet.

Seriously, it is good to see they are taking a break from all the work and hassle in DC. I hope they enjoy it and get back to work tomorrow and work all the harder to get the Presidents's agenda through Congress.
I am so jealous!  What fun!  And what great sports for Gibbs and Rahm to do this - felt good huh press corps?
Be glad it isn't the party of no hosting that thing. Instead of a dunk tank they would waterboard. Be water boarded for charity. The Republicans would go broke trying to prove it harmless.
Cool that the President, First Lady and his team have an open style. The WH has never been this friendly a place in my memory.

Kudos for Gibbs and Emanuel for being good sports!
The faux news correspondent missed all three times...theres a shocker
Two words-grow up.
I hope members of both parties attended. I know this sounds like a waste of taxpayer money but I really think that these two sides need to get together in a less formal setting and get to know each other. Then maybe we can start getting good legislation that everyone can agree on.
How prophetic and metaphorical...nothing but a bunch of sharks...feeding on and at the expense of US taxpayers.  God damn them, wrightly speaking.
Nero luaus while the American Economy burns...
I love these guys! I am glad they are trying to find some lighter moments in their day as they work so hard to make our lives better.  Although smiling is hard to do today because of other news items, I always enjoy seeing the administration's amazing ability to balance a tough tough job with a little fun and humor.  Rahm and "Gibby" - all you guys - I love you!  Keep up the good work! You will always be in my thoughts and prayers!
Who paid for it?
Ah, the traditional Konikulahana dunk tank--a staple of every luau.

Also, FR realizes what kinds of proposals it will receive for who goes in the dunk tank and with what the dunk tank might be filled and the like.

And then there's the lei jokes...
This is nice...Fox missed dunking Gibbs...good for them.
What a bunch of horse hockey.  How much is this adolescent stupidity costing taxpayers?  Have the hemorrhoid Obamanoids no shame?
After so many years of dull and boring, it is nice to see a more open and fun-loving White House.  Bi-partisanship begins with socializing.  What a good sport Robert Gibbs is, refreshing personality and pleasant change from the side-stepping Dana Perino which was not her fault, how do you defend her bosses.  These people make huge personal sacrifices to serve any president, democrat or republican, they deserve some fun and family time.  No doubt the whiners will be complaining about a luau forgetting that Bush hosted bar-b-ques frequently on his ranch.
This sounds like fun . . . wish I were there!
It's nice to see an Administration not afraid to have a little fun in such a informal fashion.  It's good to have a First Family with a sense of humor, as well as style.
And how much of this did we pay for?  If this could be taken out of the president's salaries, that would be great as well as members of the press paying $5 just to get in for this party.  Was there any business that done during this event?  This is from someone who likes some of what the president is doing.
Am I the only one who thinks Robert Gibbs must have a bunch of tatoos?  Why else would a man go to a luau in a long sleeve DARK shirt in the middle of HOT summer?

Come on Chuck, as him the tough question about who designs his art?

Inquiring minds and all.  PS.  Chuck, did you get a shot at him?  How'd you fair?
