Obama agenda: Merkel, health, Iraq

The AP previews today’s Obama-Merkel meeting. "President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel probably will hold to their disparate views on the Afghanistan war and economic policy in the midst of worldwide financial problems during a meeting Friday."

Speaking of negotiating and bending and lobbying moderate Dems, the AP looks at how some liberals in the party are worried the president will bend too much.

Is there a bigger story in the world that no one is covering than the U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq's major cities next week? "Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki has taken to calling the withdrawal of American combat troops from Iraq’s cities by next Tuesday a ‘great victory,’ a repulsion of foreign occupiers he compares to the rebellion against British troops in 1920… American commanders have hewed far more closely to the June 30 deadline for withdrawing combat forces from Iraq’s cities than expected only a few weeks ago, according to American and Iraqi officials. ... The day itself has been declared a national holiday, though it is not yet clear whether Iraq will hold the “feast and festivals” he recently promised. American and Iraqi officials acknowledge the risks -- to Mr. Maliki’s political position and to Iraqis’ safety."
Video: A massive bombing that left scores of people dead in Baghdad Wednesday has raised new fears that the U.S. is entering a bad phase in Iraq just days ahead of a troop pullout. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Per the New York Times, John McCain was making demands for his support of any immigration bill. “President Obama told a bipartisan group of lawmakers on Thursday that Congress should begin debating a comprehensive immigration plan by year’s end or early next year, but Republicans said they would support a measure only if it included an expansion of guest worker programs. Leading the call for that provision was Senator John McCain of Arizona, who told Mr. Obama he would have to take his ‘political lumps’ and stand up to labor unions that oppose the idea. The president praised Mr. McCain for paying ‘a significant political cost for doing the right thing.’”

"Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said Thursday the administration will send legislative language to Congress in the next few days to create a consumer financial products agency, one of the key parts of its overhaul plan. ... But he refused to answer a question on whether he had been informed ahead of time by Citigroup Inc. of its plans to modify its salary arrangements for many bank employees."

"Seeking to avoid the legislative minutia that has consumed some of his predecessors, President Barack Obama is pushing his agenda through Congress by outlining a broad vision of his policy goals and then letting lawmakers fill in the blanks. Republicans would like to make him pay for that. GOP leaders on Capitol Hill see in Obama’s approach a chance to paint the young president as disengaged from the work required to address the country’s ills. 'It’s the perpetual campaign,' said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. 'It’s photo-ops; it doesn’t happen to include doing the hard work it takes to solve big problems that he talks about but I don’t ever see him doing.'"

(You can call Obama a lot of things, but is “disengaged” one of them?)

As we reported yesterday, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry's former-brother-in law -- who remains a close friend -- and two more Obama top fundraisers were handed plum jobs as ambassadors to Italy, Austria and Finland.

"Straw huts, hula dancers and kids playing with hula hoops were all on display Thursday evening in the White House's backyard - not the typical congressional picnic," AP writes. "President Barack Obama wanted it this way for the annual picnic for members of Congress and their families. 'I just want to say to all the members of Congress, you've been working hard. I wish I could give you all trips to Hawaii,' Obama said in his brief remarks. 'But I figured since, given our budget crunch we can't do that, that we'd at least bring Hawaii to you.'" Andrea Merkel is unimpressed with Obama.  So is Sarkozy.

His rock star image doesn't play too well with actuao leaders.

I know where the Republicans are coming from and I realize that this is a tired political stunt BUT it still breaks my heart to see Barack Obama working SO HARD and being so disrepected.

When is someone in real power going to speak up and stop this bad and immoral behavior?

It's so good to have a president who doesn't rub Angela the wrong way.  Way too much has been made of the tiff between Barack and Angela regarding their disagreement over how to do economic stimulus.  We have to use more government spending to lift our bushwhacked economy than Germany does theirs.

I think that al Maliki's recent remarks about how having US troops leave Iraqi cities as a victory for Iraq tells us all we need to know about how well we are thanked for all that blood and money we wasted in Iraq.  Yeah so much for being greeted with open arms as liberators.  And we're going to keep over 130,000 troops in a country of ingrates until next January why?  It was time to pull out of that worthless country of ingrates years ago but no War Criminal Bush just had to keep us there so he could keep pouring billions of taxpayer dollars down the Halliburton, KBR, Blackwater drain so his crooked conservative business pals could rip off us taxpyers real good.  We should pull all of our troops out of Iraq now and let the Iraqis handle their own internal affairs.

In Obama We Trust!
In Iraq We Bust!
We need a guest worker program in this country.  While I can understand the position of those who followed the rules and gained entry into this country legally, we cannot be so idealogical as to believe that we will deport 12 million people-it will not be done.

therefore, a guest worker program makes sense.  However, taking seriously the objections of those wh are against a 'path to citizenship', 'amnesty', etc., I propose that we give those who are here illegally, but working, productive people, a card other than a green card.  Make it orange, purple, - whatever suits you.  Holders of these cards will be afforded the protection of labor laws, will not fear to call the police if they are victims of crimes-and will be precluded from seeking citizenship.  Of curse, they should be allowed to do so if they go back to their home countries for the specified time and return legally, so it would not be a permanent bar to citizenship.

I believe that this solution takes all issues into consideration, and is fair to everyone.
The American people are still waiting for mission accomplished in Iraq. I never saw it and now when U.S. troops are leaving Iraq cities the violence is getting worse. Its become the Pandora's box that  progressive thinkers w/ a grasp of history warned against and the neo-cons, meglomaniac/war mongers who used 911 for their own nefarious political, monetary ie., Darth Vador's Halliburtin, and geopolitical gains. Its called hubris for you the enablers(gop) and kool-aid drinkers.

Oh, so NOW we care about what Europe thinks?  I must've missed the e-mail.

Do you have any proof of this or did you need to wash your hands after you pulled this out?
If anything Obama is not disengaged. The Congress makes the laws and the President executes them. He lets Congress know what laws he would like to execute and let them do their job. Funny how the Constitution, when followed, works so well isn't it?

As for disengaged Presidents we need look only to the last one. He was to inept to know and really didn't care and then there was Reagan who was too old and mind going to be engaged in the workings of the gov'ment. They'd brief him before his nap and after his nap and he was good with that. It was called a "hands off" style of management. Hands off is fine but when one listens and is briefed by the likes of Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld and John  Ashcroft he is being given the worst information possible.

Living in a border state Senator McCain understands the need for a guest worker program. Paying union wages for picking fruits and veggies would increase the cost of food exponentially to the point of unafordability. If the unions want good inexpensive food on the tables of their workers and the working poor they need not push for higher wages. Caesar Chavez was more about safety and about breaks etc than for pay and so that was fine. Keeping track of who is where among immigrant guest workers is also a good idea. I believe this is one of the few things I would have to agree with Sen. McCain about.
McCain is in no position to dictate that the President stand and 'take his lumps.' In contrast, I see McCain doing nothing that makes him break a sweat with his party or working for anything that 'crosses the aisle' as he nauseatingly stated a million times when a candidate. He needs to stand and deliver...
Eric and the people of his ilk will never be happy unless we lose Iraq. They will then proceed to blame every problem on Bush.Dont call yourself a patriot Eric, there is only one word that describes you.        MORON!!
OBAMA DESPISES OUR EUROPEAN ALLIES.

OBAMA ONLY BOWS TO MIDEASTERM TYRANTS.
I suppose Sarkozy calling Obama 'dangerously naive' was simply a poor choice of words?  Or that his statements that he wuld not send a boat for Obama at the D-Day commemoration, so that he could have the opportunity to prove that he could walk on water, was the kind of thing you say about someone you respect?

It is obvioous that you do not travel.  I do.  The French and the Germans laugh at us-they, who elected accomplished adults to positions of leadership cannot believe that we elected-this is a quote- a rock star.

You really should get out more.  Your opinion of Obama, the successor to elvis, is not shared by the rest of the world.
U believe the spelling of wearable floral wreaths from Hawaii is leis.
President Obama is working hard, but don't forget what has happened in our country the past several years:

Looks like Bush was right, Obie.

Pulling out of Iraq now will only mean chaos.
It's all on you. And don't throw up at the thought of that. Stand tall, dammit.
Enlightened, selfless public servants will do a much better job deciding to whom and how much treatment will be administered.

Don't worry, since there is no talk whatsoever of tort reform or liability caps, there will always be a Trial Lawyer right there to sue Uncle Sam and get you the treatment and the money (the lawyer) deserves! It is Win-Win.

You can sue the government for much more than you can sue Blue Cross, J&J, Aetna or Merck (or GE Healthcare)!
Wow! I can't believe it.  I actally agree with NO JOE, NO BO on his immigration idea. Never thought I'd ever agree with him on anything. Keep up the good ideas.

WARREN BUFFET SAYS CAP-N-TRADE IS A MONSTROUS PROGRESSIVE TAX ---

Fact:  WE KNOW THAT OBAMA'S HEALTHCARE PLAN WILL RESULT IN A LARGE TAX INCREASE.

WHERE IS OBAMA GOING WITH "TAX INCREASES" ON THE WORKING, MIDDLE CLASS?

WE ARE HEADING FOR A EUROPEAN STYLE 50% TAX RATE !

When your boy Bush and Cheney were in power every thing the French and Germans sad was a bunch of crap according to you and the neo-cons. And now their the smartest countries in the world. Just goes to show how hypocritical you neo-cons really are.

no jo, no bo  I totally agree with you.  This would account for people who have not entered this country legally and take away the reward of amnesty.  Also children of "purple card" workers would not be allowed citizenship if born in this country.  They would be citizens of their parents home country and have to apply for citizenship here.

An idea worth investigating.
